- thehappysymptom, on 09/20/2008, -10/+62PC gaming will always have its place, as long as console setups don't start including a mouse and keyboard. FPS and RTS games can be _very_ annoying on consoles.
The worst part of PC gaming: having to play on - and subsequently use Windows. - musters, on 10/10/2007, -11/+35Was there ever a dispute, Console gaming has always been playing catchup, and always will.
- johnkyoungoh, on 10/10/2007, -5/+28In my personal opinion, WoW had alot to do with killing PC gaming.
It's monstrous success has taken over such a huge chunk of the PC gaming market that other games just can't break into the audience that WoW has captivated. - omnithought, on 10/10/2007, -6/+27There is one main reason the PC will remain strong in gaming: ***** of free, user-created mods. On consoles you only get what the console manufacturer decides to provide.
- caddyalan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Depends on what people want from gaming. Complex strategy games and online-only games definitely thrive on PCs, followed slightly by the FPS, complex RPG, and RTS genres. Unfortunately, I only like one of those five types, so I don't purchase many PC games.
From the day I discovered Super Mario Bros, I've enjoyed platform action games, which work well on consoles. From the day I discovered Dragon Warrior, I've liked simple RPGs, which work well on consoles. And I often like cute, offbeat games, which are rare on PCs. So that's why I've focused on consoles. - jlewicki, on 10/10/2007, -13/+29I side with PC gaming because of the precision control and for the most part, pc games are always 1 step ahead in technological respects (excluding peripheral attachments). The thought of replacing a mouse and keyboard for a sloppy joystick controller, is not my idea of fun.
It's my biased opinion. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Counter strike was at one point a free downloaded mod for half-life, which is why this man is correct. Mods ftw.
- reed311, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Piracy has killed PC gaming. Which is the reason why MMO's have taken over, as they are virtually impossible to pirate (if at all). I know you folks don't like to hear that piracy actually hurts the industry, but it does and it has put a lot of good people out of business. Yes, piracy happens on gaming consoles but not nearly as often. Everyone I have ever known has pirated some type of PC software, whether its a game or office. I don't care what system has the games, as long as they are good. But, honestly, I do prefer PC gaming.
- Lapdog1123, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Im a PC gamer my self, and what I have noticed is most PC games that have released recently kinda suck.... So I have reverted back to console gaming. Im still a PC gamer at heart, but nothing has come out recently that I can sit an play for hours on end.
- LocalDocal, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16"The worst part of PC gaming: having to play on - and subsequently use Windows."
And all this time, I had thought that the constant upgrading was the worst part of PC gaming. - Cyberbladewolf, on 10/10/2007, -7/+20With console games, I know that EVERY single game made for the system will play the way it is intended to be played. With PC games, it's hit or miss. You might have to spend hundreds of dollars just to upgrade your graphics card to play the latest greatest game, and in a year that graphics card will be useless for the newest games again. Consoles have at least a 5 year life, so I know I won't spend hundreds of dollars a year just upgrading my system. That's the only problem I have with PC gaming. Give me a graphics card that will play all the games for 5 years with no problem at a decent (Less then $300) price point and I'll gladly go with PC gaming, until then I'll enjoy consoles.
- waterdrop, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Counter Strike, World of Warcraft, Half Life 2 and all its mods (Garry's Mod, etc.), SimCity, the Sims, BF2, etc.
It's games like these that just don't seem right on anything but a PC. - waterdrop, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14I have no problem running games in Windows XP. Vista though brings my fps down a bit.
- volacide, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10All they're doing is catching up to turning in PCs themselves. In the end, consoles will just be a PC and Microsoft will have their own Console OS and Sony will have their own Console OS and they're all going to be basically PCs.
- TheMeatball, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Most people play games for *FUN*, not to develop their career.
Sheesh. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+15PC games should work by booting to the game CD instead of Windows.
- azAZ09, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14More like the younger dumber brother. Computers have been around longer.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDP-10
"Will Crowther created Adventure, the prototypical computer adventure game, for a PDP-10. Don Daglow created the first computer baseball game (1971) and Dungeon (1975), the first computer role playing game (RPG) on a PDP-10. Walter Bright originally created Empire for the PDP-10. Roy Trubshaw and Richard Bartle created the first MUD on a PDP-10. In addition, Zork was written on the PDP-10, and Infocom used several PDP-10s for game development and testing." - autocrawler, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10We had articles like this one since 1999 or so.
Looking forward to articles with the exact same content in 2008.
And 2009.
And 2010.
And 2011.
And so on. :) - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12Only if graphics are all that matters, which the Wii proves is not the case.
- enforcerpsu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8They both fit a market! PC gaming isn't on the way out. Not in the least bit. Console gaming is just coming up big right now because consoles finally have the horse power and the community to back a lot more development.
PC gaming will always be preferred choice for tech heads, RTS, MMORPGs, and usually FPS. The first person market is doing very well on the console right now, but only for a few select games. The main market is still on PC and probably will be for years.
Console gaming is really hitting its mark with 3rd person, platformers, and sports games...because truth be told they are much easier to play on a console. The FPS market has a strong select showing on the console as well. Computers add a lot of clutter too and console gaming is sometimes just simpler and hassle free.
But both serve a market. A lot of gamers like me don't see a competition here. Why would we? We play both. - mtrip, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Oooh, some nerd just called you a noob! Take that!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+13That's because you're a newb.
- LordSkywalker, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9I definitely agree. Dealing with installs, downloading patches, unregulated online experience, troubleshooting errors, messing with drivers, etc.
PC gaming can have a ton of hassles that consoles just don't. I think implementing Steam-style, integrated content delivery and management distribution makes the experience much smoother. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Exactly. I bought my PC 5 to 6 years ago and I can still play everything I want (and every game you mentioned) and tons of ***** I don't want. With consoles you can't play every good game on the same console, so if you like this game AND that game you have to buy two ***** consoles which nowadays is the price of a decent PC (which can still play every game that waterdrop mentioned).
- zangief, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I think in the whole "console vs pc gaming" discussion people drag too much peronal preferece into it without looking at how most people game. Most people are noobs meaning they want the easiest way to play games. That means consoles. Like enforcerpsu said, there is a market for both and the reason we are having this discussion right now is because consoles have made huge progression lately.
You think mom and dad are going to buy their 8 and 10 year old kids kick ass new gaming PC's? No, they are getting them Wii's right now, and it makes perfect sense. - Pake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7CS 1.6 is still played more than CS:S.
- dougsnell, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Keyboards and mice on every console won't rid the world of PC gaming, either. The TV resolution will have to be a lot better, the whole issue of what to use the mouse on (not to mention the distance you have to move it), and so forth.
Hard to believe, but some people can't afford both a console AND a PC ... and consoles don't do much other than gaming ... ... not well, anyway. - frsrblch, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9PC gaming is too hard? That's a new one. You press 'Next' a bunch of times, followed by a 'Finish,' then you run the game. If you don't like the defaults settings you can change them.
It's analogous to driving a standard versus driving an automatic. While the automatic is simpler, the standard is still easy enough to use that you'd have to be an idiot to not be able to drive one.
Allow me to simplify this for you: you fail at gaming. - UtopiaInTheSky, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9You forgot the part about saving $60+ per game.
- Havs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6This debate pops up every time a next generation console comes out. What happens is that the new console offers graphics that are just as good (if not better) than a top end PC, so everyone flocks toward consoles. A few years later, when the console platform has been stretched to its limits, and the graphics aren't so pretty, PC gaming starts looking good again and this whole "PC gaming is dead" debate dies down.
- Shaflugi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Why would you want to gimp your PC like that? You'd have to reboot the damn thing every time you want to switch from playing a game to using the OS. It's not like Windows interferes with the game THAT MUCH.
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Even beyond a keyboard and mouse is access to play around with the environment that the game runs in. Show me a list of 10 free, independent quality games on a console? Show me the list of fan made console mods? The biggest mis-conception is that PC games are good because they push graphical limitations, and allow a mouse/keyboard input. One of my favorite games is Angband (a roguelike), I remember in college when I reprogrammed some simple variables (before I knew anything about programming) and made it into a futuristic with fast replicating nano-bots, mechs, cyber-thugs etc. Do that on a console. And let's not forget Counter Strike. PCs gaming is awesome because of the freedom the user has, console gaming (while fun) will never have this sort of feature in the foreseeable future
- Cerebral, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6The REAL problem is that with the PC there is quite a bit of extra code that goes into the installation of the game for things like driver support. The fact that all PCs are not made equal is the reason you cannot have a boot from CD/DVD type of console with a PC... which in turn is what consoles are: PCs that are all identical.
- Cerebral, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I agree, PC gaming will never go away. Espeically since all the hardware is generally more advanced (peripherals) on the PC (higher DPI mice etc.) By the time consoles support keyboards/mice they will only support basic stuff.
Not to mention that consoles are made to play on TVs that only recently can do 1920x1080. Whereas PCs have supported 1600x1200 for a while. - Sirocco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The only problem there is that in five years your CPU will be the bottleneck and you'll have to upgrade that as well. What I do is alternate upgrades every 2 years or so.
- jedikv, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6There are more to gaming than RTS, FPS and RPGs you know. Not all games are great with keyboard and mouse.
- BobsYourUncle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You haven't seen the prices on the latest consoles, have you? And if you can't spell graphics, I can't take anything you say seriously.
- KniteWulf, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Thats not what he was talking about.....n00b.
- mike81890, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9or you're a newb
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Maybe graphically, but not innovation in terms of gameplay, AI, content, etc.
- meltingrobot, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8I just ditched Windows completely after no Diablo 3 announcement from Blizzard. Picked up Quake4 last night. Looking forward to Quake Wars next month too. Thank you ID Software for caring about the Linux people. I'll definitely continue to show my appreciation with purchases.
- Terr01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Exactly! "Boot to a game" is stupid.
And what if you want to pause you game and do something else? What if you want to run third-party voice chat? What if you want a web page handy so that you can look up some item specs or hints? None of those are feasible. - mike81890, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4agreed totally. Steam is going on the right track lately, especially with their improved friend system (which still needs a lot of work, but it is getting there)
- azAZ09, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Spore.
- SaxxonPike, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7PC gaming is more expensive, yeah. But I'd have to disagree with your statement a bit. Hardware now is designed to be much more powerful than the games that will run them up through 2 years later (and beyond.). You probably don't realize how much they have to scale DOWN to get the PC games to work well on consoles with a decent frame rate. On the crappy TVs that the majority of gamers play on nowadays, you can afford to lose a little here or there anyway.
- COLDshiver, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Long Live PC Gaming!
- XxXoldsaltXxX, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9PC gaming will never die, keyboard/mouse are just too precise
*Insert comment about getting buried, it'll make me look less stupid. oh wait i still look stupid* - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4PCs have multiple GENERAL PURPOSE processors, you uninformed moron.
Please, continue to comment on things you have NO idea about. It amuses me. - mike81890, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I agree with your statement because BF2, Counterstrike and Half-Life 2 were all more enjoyable on PC than they were on their console counterpart.
- lacronicus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4yes, because we all know 3d gaming originated on consoles. as well as online play (heres to you, Carmack)
