- Aleman360, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27Thanks goes to DOGG on ps3forums.com for discovering this.
- sam10685, on 10/12/2007, -57/+8if apple and sony have nothing goin, apple should sue for millions.
- flobee, on 10/12/2007, -14/+48It's a fake. Here's the background: http://web.mac.com/mouseh/streamvideo14.swf
- flernk, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4WTF? Somthing's fishy. This is either a genius viral marketing campaign or a bad mistake by a Flash designer. Either way, something is amiss. Interesting, but I'll wait for confirmation.
- AggieTales, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10@flobee
that still kinda begs the question of whats an Apple logo doing on the site at all? - flobee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35Actually, I'm sorry, when I said "fake" I think I meant "fluke". The SWF is real, but the Sony employee who created it was using a trial version of the software that includes that background.
- CatfishJones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30Credit were credit is due: Aleman360 was the first to post the .swf link above. For those just showing up... basically Sony ripped off a video from Apple and didn't remove the Apple logo completely. No need to panic. ;)
- Killah_xxx, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2@AggieTales:
They where using it to show some smoke comming from the PS3 too look it "Smoking hot". - flernk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Fluke indeed. Fire that guy. Using stock video for a world-wide advertising campaign? Boo.
- AggieTales, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2@Killah_xxx
I realize what the point of the background is, but what i was saying is why was there an Apple logo mixed in with it. - Buckets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33For a company who's all about copyrights, Sony should actually buy the software they use.
- Flynnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35I captured me using swf capture to show that is in fact the same video file.
you can view it here.
http://www.johnbiank.com/apple_sony.swf - streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -10/+8Do you guys realize what that black rectangle is?
That's a Powerbook / MacBook Pro box sittting there endwise, acting as a baffle to get the dry ice fog to divide evenly.
That's all. The people shooting the comp could have used anything else, but happened to have a Mac box handy. - streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Furthermore, it's not "stock video" from some "demo version" of a software package - Who would shoot a stock-footage comp that contained someone else's retail box? This was a comp shot by the studio that did the Flash stuff for Sony.
All this tells us is that the thing was designed on Macs. - tehJR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5could someone post the original swf file sony had on their site? The one you decompiled.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I'm not seeing the smoke on the site. Has it been removed?
- third_eye, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Look who's got the decompiler running. =) Ripping sites, are we?
- cam2009, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20thats actually pretty interesting. but if they were really working with apple, you would think they would either not fade their logo after half a second, or not show it at all. either a stupid flash animator adding something in, or a smart flash animator hiding something. its under the playstation 3 lettering and above the controller if you can't see it, you may need to refresh.
- CatfishJones, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28Please let it be just an adoring fan of a Flash designer... but I'm still worried. Apple has a huge thing for keeping its plans secret as well as precedence of punishing third party partners who leak any plans. I wouldn't be too surprised if they could hide something like this for a couple more months.
Apple does have a seat on the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) Board of Directors. No, it's just a bad dream. It has to be. *click click* There's no place like home... *click click* There's no place like home... - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Everything about this story screams "bull," except for the phantom logo. I don't know what to think anymore. What is the hell is going on? This seems like the very last thing Apple would ever do. This flies in the face of everything we know about Apple and Sony's relationship...
...then again, there were rumors about Apple working on a game console, and they have hired employees with video game backgrounds... - newezra, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Either the Flash designer/developer stole/grabbed the footage from Apple to use in the site, or they made the huge mistake of not covering up the Apple logo when shooting the smoke footage. Either way someone's getting fired today!
Shame on the designer!
- neiltc13, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Took me a little bit to work this out but the logo is on the defaut.html page, not on the specs or gallery page.
Someone on PS3forums captured this image of it:
http://www.team-md.com/upload/store/ps3.jpg - dombi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I made a picture of it as well. It can be found here:
http://flickr.com/photos/25791144@N00/184110121/
I also played around with PhotoShop and increased the image contrast so that it is easier to see:
http://flickr.com/photos/25791144@N00/184110122/
Quite interesting... - neiltc13, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5Just in case that link above goes down, here's the image on my own server which will support hordes of traffic:
http://neil-christie.com/dump/ps3.jpg - rainmanbk, on 10/12/2007, -8/+31What the heck is this crap? I hate Sony, but I love Apple.
- superalamar, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4apple + games tends to = a pipe dream. This is very interesting.
Realistically, I suspect an ipod tie in...Perhaps the WWDC should shed some light on this....
- superalamar, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4apple + games tends to = a pipe dream. This is very interesting.
- tumult, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Well, it's either one of three things: 1) A deal is already being worked on with Apple, and this is Sony's attempt at subliminal messaging. 2) Someone at Sony (or someone under contract) slipped it in just to screw with us. 3) It got in there by accident, somehow.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7"1) A deal is already being worked on with Apple, and this is Sony's attempt at subliminal messaging."
Viral marketing is more like it. If this is genuine, it is nothing short of an earth-shaking proposition. Rumors will start flying, and word of mouth will spread like wildfire. I think we'll find out soon enough how legit this is after it gets out, and comes back around to Sony. If they "fix" the problem, we'll know it was a hoax by a borred flash artist.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7"1) A deal is already being worked on with Apple, and this is Sony's attempt at subliminal messaging."
- tumult, on 10/12/2007, -0/+39Actually, wait. Look at that smoke effect in the background. That might have been made with one of Apple's tools (like Motion or Shake) and the Apple logo was in the rendered footage for some reason. That might be why it only shows up for a second, and then fades out (as a lot of Apple software does.)
- dombi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+51So you are saying Sony is using Apple's software, but they are only using the trial version so that Apple logo stays in the final product. That would be hilarious. :-D
- superalamar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10would also be hard for a decent web designer to miss....
- nayten, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5You'd think the company that manufactures VAIO PCs and Laptops would use... oh I don't know, it's own computers for development?
- Aiwanei, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10"You'd think the company that manufactures VAIO PCs and Laptops would use... oh I don't know, it's own computers for development?"
Ah but if you ever used a Sony Vaio, you would know why they don't use them. Way overprice for being underpowered, and lots of propeitary parts - killtherat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Yeah it would be kind of stupid to miss the trail version watermark, but it's Sony we''re talking about here ;-)
But that seems to be the most logical theory. Corporate alliances are announced via subliminal flash animation, they're announced by press release. Besides, the PowerPC architecture is dead to Steve Jobs (he is a man that can carry a grudge).
Of course, working with Apple would be a little plausible given last year's MacWorld when Sony's CEO came out on stage and announced a partnership between Apple and Sony for high def television, calling it the 'year of high def'.
It was a rather stilted moment where everyone wondered what products they were specifically talking about, and why hadn't the Sony CEO been more prepared to speak (of course everyone look unprepared for a speech when compared to Steve jobs) - HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2"You'd think the company that manufactures VAIO PCs and Laptops would use... oh I don't know, it's own computers for development?"
No, because the PS3 is going to replace all of them anyways. =P - SenatorPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"You'd think the company that manufactures VAIO PCs and Laptops would use... oh I don't know, it's own computers for development?"
Sony probably hired a design studio or artist. Macs are generally better and more popular in the creative professional field. Remember when the corner of an iBook with the glowing powercord was shown to represent connection speed on Microsoft's website? Same deal, except this looks like an accident. - Khuffie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@nayten
Companies like Sony (and Nintendo, and MS) more often than not outsource marketing campaigns to ad agencies and design firms to keep a fresh outlook. Inhouse development tends to be for simple stuff and maintenance/updates of information. - PepperMinty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3http://web.mac.com/mouseh/streamvideo14.swf
Sony was using that vidoe for it's fog effecr. But as another effect, the PS3 faded in, so you can se the Apple Logo.
- d8cam, on 10/12/2007, -104/+10I played the PlayStation 3 at E3. In fact, I was the guy that caught the PS3 freezing live on video:http://youtube.com/watch?v=c_4InHXPHvs
I didn't post the video because I hate the PS3, but because I thought it would be an interesting topic of discussion. It's an excellent piece of hardware, but not for gameplay.
I played the PS3 at E3. I played GT, Sonic and others and wasn't impressed. It seemed like upgraded technology, but not upgraded gameplay, and that troubled me. I played the Wii every day at E3, and loved it.- cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33What does this have to do with anything in the article?
- thegreenone, on 10/12/2007, -42/+0d8cam's seem relevant to me.
- Tanpreet, on 10/12/2007, -26/+2seems like all the new systems are either freezing or crashing in the early stages
- SmashA444, on 10/12/2007, -35/+13You look like a girl. Get a haircut.
- actionscripted, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26Good for you. Glad you got to play. If you're done bragging, pull up your pants and move along. No one here is going to suck your dick for how cool you think you are.
- neiltc13, on 10/12/2007, -16/+35d8cam, your comments are irrelevant to this discussion. Do NOT spam.
- d8cam, on 10/12/2007, -117/+5My comments are probably most relevant considering I am most likely the only person here who has played the Wii for a combined 6 hours, the PS3 for a combined 4 hours and the XBOX 360 for a combined many, many days. Ask me questions if you wish.
- CatfishJones, on 10/12/2007, -9/+55Ah, ya. *raises hand* I have a question. Why do you insist on spaming Digg? This article has nothing to do with the comparison between or preformance of the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 or Wii. This article has everything to do with Apple's involvement in the development of the Playstation 3. So unless you saw Steve Jobs troubleshooting the PS3 you played on, your comments are spam.
- bpwwhirl, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23Nor does it have anything to do with how awesome you are and how we should stare at you in awe, for you are one of the chosen to have played the Wii.
- thenorwegian, on 10/12/2007, -8/+55you want a ***** cookie?
- vatechtigger, on 10/12/2007, -17/+32"Ask me questions if you wish."
How gay are you? - m00nmaster, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Aren't all of your backlash comments to d8cam just as bad? Why don't you just mod him down or block him and move on? You write to him, he gets a rise out of it and digg is now full of useless comments.
- uberwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Jesus, haven't you guys heard of the block button?
Much better solution that replying to his prods.
(I know, I know, hypocrite, etc.)
- neiltc13, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8If you wish to post your own videos or post about your experiences then create a new story from the homepage.
- Aleman360, on 10/12/2007, -16/+6The PS3 would be a nice way for Apple to get their inevitable iTunes Movie Store into the living room.
- CatfishJones, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Just out of curiousity... how much higher than 77% market share do you need before you're "in the living room".
- patnakajima, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I think his point is that for now, that 77% market share is accessed by the computer, not on the television. To have the iTMS in the living room means to push it not just into the lives of people who are computer literate, but also those who are basic home electronics literate. That's a much bigger market.
edit: I just wanted to add my two cents as well - I really hope this isn't true, because apple is moving up, while sony just keeps tumbling. - m00nmaster, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2"Just out of curiousity... how much higher than 77% market share do you need before you're "in the living room"."
I'm sorry, we'll need that in the form of a question. - CatfishJones, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Stop being so pedantic m00nmaster. Considering my grammar is above average for a Digg user, you might want to cut me some slack.
- m00nmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just a little humor, friend.
- neiltc13, on 10/12/2007, -15/+6I captured a video of it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPSL779qnvE - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5Sony ia only doing it because they want Mac OS X to run on the PS3.
- Pharaoh777, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2Of course they do! Why wouldn't they want the best operating system available on the most console available. Sony and Apple strategies are very similar. Offer a premium product at a premium price.
- npsken, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2No, they want linux to run on the PS3
- superalamar, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4blah...your best OS in the world comment is going to start a *****....perhaps sony is getting desperate for something to save the ps3 as it is looking nearly doomed.
- wyfflemunky, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9"Sony and Apple strategies are very similar. Offer a premium product at a premium price."
Except that Apple also works off innovation, while Sony just pretties up existing products and sells them for more. - stappawho, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3@wyfflemunky
What do you call Blu-ray and the cell processor? I'm not arguing whether these are good or not, just that they have done more than just pretty things up. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> Except that Apple also works off innovation, while Sony just pretties
> up existing products and sells them for more.
Exactly. And furthermore, Apple actually respects its customers by trying their best to resist the music industry's push for stricter DRM and higher prices. Apple products don't fall apart in a year. Apple actually supports their customers when they have problems. Apple...
Er... I'm sorry. Why are we comparing these two companies again?
- bigpodb, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6That's crazy!
- dabigdjin, on 10/12/2007, -18/+2maybe someone just had a mac in front of the ps3 and the reflection off the back of it hit when the pic was taken ;)
- OmegaX, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3It's on the PS3 website, not someone's own site. And it's a video, not a picture. And it fades in/out, not just 'is there'.
- Oktober, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35Skeptical / Nintendo Answer: Some web designer just stole an effect from the Apple site!
Moderate Answer: PS3 will probably have iTunes support in some fashion
Insane Answer: PS3 will be co-branded with apple, Mac Mini will be discontinued, streets will run red with the blood of the nonbelievers- blapierre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Why would Sony put iTunes on their PS3 when they have a product that directly competes with iTunes? Yeah, they wouldn't.
- Aleman360, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45http://web.mac.com/mouseh/streamvideo14.swf
Apparantly that is the background video obtained when someone decompiled the Flash file.- quailtamer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Oh my god.
- refulgentis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Well, that settles it...trial version of Shake. How ridiculous.
- M15anthrope, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9that's hilarious!
- thecosas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9That is insane if its true...
- rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Lol, they just stole the video and didn't get the Apple logo edited all the way out
- cybermort, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1You Win!!!!!
- nyrol, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6That is the background video. I decompiled it and that's true.
- jdavid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7i think this is another case of sony stealing ideas from other companies, my bet is that the smoke looked really cool on an apple video that sony saw and used it as an element in their flash video. the apple logo could just be a flash watermark from the flashmovie that was borrowed.
- tunana, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I find it hard to believe that Sony would be so stupid as to steal that vid. Wait a minute, the PS3 is $600. Maybe they are that stupid.
- videoeye, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1YOU WON!!!!... YOU CRACK THE TRUTH!!!!
IS A TRIAL VERSION. - addisonj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2not really a huge suprise... MS has done worse using a pirated version of sound forge or whatever it was to edit their audio files... actually... i would not be suprised if it was a cracked trial version... :P
- coxon, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7Steve loves Sony products btw.
- symalik, on 10/12/2007, -19/+1quite interesting, what if apple has some secert linux based platform?
- kwojniak, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7Yeah supposedly it's called Mac OS X....
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8MacOSx is not linux, but bsd based. Geesh, and I hate Apple and I knew that.
- videoeye, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5OS X = UNIX based
- t.toe, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9I think the most likely scenario is that someone was using Apple software to make the smoky background.
- quailtamer, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4That's real smoke, brah.
- refulgentis, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6No brah, it isn't.
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -28/+2I think this was done by sony to hype the ps3 to all the Apple Fanboys on digg.
marked as spam.- refulgentis, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11You realize that spam has nothing to do with your interpretation, right?
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1Yea it does, I said I think it's a marketing move. Therefore, it is spam.
- superalamar, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2lol
- 2damntall, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Wow that's stupid.
- kruykaze, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4WOW ps3 is hiding something .Itunes? OSX? Man i can't wait for the release.
- Rizmaster, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5So Sony and Apple are making a game system that's maclike: Overly expensive, but it doesn't suck total ass like the one Microsoft is pushing on us.
It will capture a smaller market share, but it will be better in every way shape and form. - cerisaac, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Ummm, what is going on here? I'd rather see an Apple/Nintendo relationship over an Apple/Sony one. On the other hand, Apple/Sony might be a killer combo to take down a huge chunk of Microsoft.
- SamboGT, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2That is REALLY interesting. I wonder if there is some sort of colaboration...
- mikeslemonade, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I just hope Apple would somehow make the PS3 integrate with the iPod. If Apple is associated with Sony then the obvious project would be something that integrates with the iPod.
- Lane, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3just imagine OS X on a PS3 how surreal would that be??
- superalamar, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32 years ago i would have said that's a pipe dream....but apple has shown itself very adaptable lately....
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2http://nlgaming.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=281&PN=1
"IPCW: So Linux can be run on the Cell?
KK: Linux is legacy, but it will be a start. In the case of the Cell, operation systems are applications. The kernel will be running on the Cell, and multiple OSes will be running on top of that as applications. Of course, the PS3 can run Linux. If Linux can run, so can Lindows. Other PC Operating Systems can run too, such as Windows and Tiger (Max OS X 10.4), if the publishers want [them] to do so. Maybe a new OS might come out."
maybe there is truth to the above statement ? i in no way believe it, i don't think sony can just magically make windows/mac os work on the ps3 just because publishers want it to; ah, ken kutargi and his pipe dreams.
interesting point: sony isn't even making the ps3 as a games machine, but as a 'supercomputer' and they think it's bad of nintendo/microsoft to call their consoles "games machines" and sony calls them toys. - Brew, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Hopefully this is just some kind of crazy mistake, but i guess the PS3 running OSX would validate the ludicrous price point Sony set.
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8No wonder it costs so much
- katsanes, on 01/30/2008, -5/+3perhaps nothing more than marketing buzz for an over-priced gaming system that needs the good PR?
- d8cam, on 10/12/2007, -46/+2"That d8cam guy played with the Wii and PS3! I am jealous and digg is a broken system, so I will digg him down!"
- flobee, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Yep, we certainly will.
- thenutty1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Why won't you go away.....
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Nah, we're just all so impressed that we giddily hit the wrong mod button. Oh wait, maybe it's because you're an attention whore.
- afeitarse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Well, I might be in the minority here, but I dugg you down because you're an arrogant prick.
- JeremiahLBurns, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14digg isn't broken. The point of digg is for the people to allow the stories (and comments) that they feel (as a democracy) are relevant. Clearly the majority of people (myself included) feel your personal experience with the PS3 have no bearing on whether or not Apple and Sony are in bed together.
It is BECAUSE most of us think your comments are irrelevant, your comments will not be shown. This is a prime example of how digg is meant to work. Go away now. - thenorwegian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4wait... is d8cam STILL talking?
- SnuKs, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5Apple/Sony Collabo? My interest in the PS3 [which was almost dead] is now rising again =D

- Flynnz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4haha you beat me to it ...nice
guess I didnt have to go through all the trouble of decompiling hehe - Flynnz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5why are people modding down? that IS the movie in the swf file from sony site.
- CatfishJones, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Probably because you're a half an hour late. It's in the comments above you.
- Flynnz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4fair enough...not sure how I missed that action.
- Matic, on 10/12/2007, -17/+1You guys are taking this kind of lightly. This is HUGE NEWS!!!!!!!
I don't know about you guys, but I want answers. I want steve jobs to comment on this! I know I am buying a PS3 just to play blu-ray movies and dvd movies and maybe a golf game. The Wii just won't look good on my brand new HDTV- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6here is the answer to the 'huge news' - http://web.mac.com/mouseh/streamvideo14.swf - they just used a trial version of shake.
it's nothing, move along. - Lardquake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm not sure if "lazy web designer rips off Apple smoke effect" qualifies as HUGE NEWS!!!!, to be honest. :)
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why is that modded up? They didn't use a trial version of Shake.. shake wouldn't even be used here. They used footage of FCP Suite box with smoke and failed to mask out the Apple logo on the FCP box.

- Tatusmi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3haha this is awesome. I hope apple craps all over them.
- astra05, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1The thing is, Steve Job said right before he switched to the Intel platform that he was disappointed where the PPC (PowerPC) platform was headed. He said he wasn't impressed in the least by the Cell processor. Also after the 10.5 release of Mac OS X, you'll see alot of support fade from the PPC platform to Intel (x86). The average life of a console is around 5-6 years as it shows with the ps2. Is apple really ready to support a platform it is trying to phase out for another 6 years? You saw what happened when OS X was released, OS 9 supported diminished like that. Or when apple moved from 68k to PPC it was radically fast for the sake of innovation. I'd love to see OS X on the cell processor and PS3 (as well as linux support) but Apple's history leaves me a bit weary.

http://www.engadget.com/2005/01/11/live-from-macworld-2005-steve-jobs-keynote/
10:03am - Kunitake Ando, president of Sony just walked on stage. Ando giving Jobs props: “Great admiration and respect for Apple products.” Jobs is filming Ando on Sony HDV camcorder.
10:05am - Ando talking about Grand Wega TVs and Blu-ray.
10:06am - Ando says “Just keep introducing great software” and ”Stay off the PC!”
10:07am - Ando says looking forward he expects Sony to bring features of FX1 into smaller and lighter cameras. Seems like he’s definitely overstaying his welcome.
10:08am - Jobs saying that maybe some day they’ll work with Sony on “computers and music, too.” - nyrol, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3They used a trial of shake.
- smazany, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I highly doubt that OS X would ever be on anything that is not made by Apple. Steve Jobs is very uptight about that. I thinkn they couldnt edit out the Apple logo, when using that effect.
- nyxeroster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7lol can you say owned? Sony is simply using a trial version of shake and the apple background rendered on it. That is hilarious
- imacniatic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0maybe blue ray PS3 games will run natively on mac :S
