It was just an expeditious way of getting that point across in a 30 second commercial, so that (most) people could understand it even if they weren't gamers.

      In other words, he was in the clear from external threats, until he took a smoke and killed himself. Hence being your own worst enemy.

A lot of people like to blame the pot for their problems, I looked around and saw a bunch of people smoking pot and going nowhere. The thing is, as I moved ahead in my career, I started meeting more successful people, and they smoke just as much pot as anyone else. Basically, if you're a failure, successful people won't bother with you. You look around at the other failures that associate with you and assume that pot is the reason they're failures. It would be as stupid as me looking around at all the PhD's I know who smoke pot everyday and reasoning that pot is the reason they're successful.

    • senatorpjt, on 06/29/2008, -1/+1It's not a deep question. People smoke because it's enjoyable, and if you're addicted, quitting ***** sucks. Simply put, smoking relieves stress. After smoking for a long time, your brain adjusts to the perceived level of stress as being normal. When you quit, your stress level goes way up, and it takes a while to adjust. Even after you've quit for a long time, your stress level is still higher than when you were smoking, so the desire never really goes away - it just gets overridden by your other reasons not to smoke. If you don't really give a ***** about the reasons not to smoke, it's hard.

    For example the Truth movement which is funded by big tobacco companies is actually the only television based cigarette advertising in the U.S at their disposal.

    IT IS A PRO-SMOKING AD, CLOAKED AS AN ANTI-SMOKING AD.

    Any ad that shows actual smoking makes smokers want to have a smoke... one that is presented from the position of the smoker, actually shows the cig come up to the mouth, is clearly a cloaked pro-smoking ad.

      I feel the cravings kick in before she gets to her third smoke. I HATE that commercial!

I have quit for good finally, but I first realized they were doing this watching an ad they used to show where a kid was playing guitar in his bedroom, and (if I recall correctly) the neck of the guitar turned into a giant cig... I really had the urge to light up when I saw it, and that's when it hit me. They can't legally buy ads that say, "buy our product", so they buy ads that say the words, "don't smoke"- but show images and sounds that make you want to.

        The "Truth Campaign" ads are the only ads I've seen that actually appear to be anti-smoking.

In the original it said something along the lines of smoking kills 3 times as many people than handguns every year. Personally I'm glad they changed it, even though i still think it's a rather pathetic attempt as I still do not like my favourite hobby being associated with smoking deaths so loosely. Better than being associated with gun violence AND smoking I guess though.
