Ah, nuanced critique = always in style. - canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -12/+227if jack bauer kills you in 2nd life, you die in your 1st one too
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -22/+191Second Life is a misnomer. It implies that any of these people have first lives to begin with.
Hay guyz, if you want to get riled up about something, why don't you stop your lame epic furry wars and start giving a crap about what's happening in the REAL WORLD. - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -4/+148How does one set off a nuke in an MMO? I know they can make virtual items, but if you can make a nuke, does it have any real effect? And if it does, what not make a super-nuke? Or a super-super-nuke? Or just a nuke so powerful that it will wipe everything out?
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -0/+89I love how there is a revolution going on...in a virtual world...with flying penises
- DiggityDugged, on 10/12/2007, -4/+86too bad the nukes left survivors. if the whole game reset it would be hilarious to hear them all moan.
- CountC, on 10/12/2007, -8/+88Did you guys actually read the article?
DILDOS FELL. I'm pretty sure if dildos can fall nukes can. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+70some dirty second life terrist prolly coded some virtual WMD's and sold it to the highest bidder.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+51Wow....Sooooooo, Second Life is just like the real world, after all...full of violent ***** with a sense of entitlement and self-righteous indignation.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47Second Life is like the game you don't personally know anyone who play it, and only read about how "people" play it in the news. :-s
- nickerbocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45Do the survivors end up getting digital cancer or mutations because of the digital radiation?
- surfpark, on 10/12/2007, -5/+50News just in: Second Life filled with people with enough time to create virtual bombs. Scientists suspect citizens may lack a first life. More news at 11.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -3/+45@CountC:
Yes, I did. There's a difference in both scope and impact between a small object like a dildo being thrown around and a nuclear bomb being detonated. - discochew, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39Second Life: Because your first one is beyond repair.
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32I think Second Life is stupid and all, but the idea of a war in it sounds absolutely hilarious. I can picture all the 14-year-old girls watching as their happy little online worlds are destroyed by giant flying penises. Just like the author of this article, I'd consider paying just to see that.
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -13/+43Why, oh why does Second Life get so much attention? Is a fruity game with crappy looking characters worthy of more coverage than Guild Wars, with 2 million players, or WoW, with 8+ million? Or do we just like reading about how the idiots who play SL made millionaires out of people who design ***** items for that ***** game? And to conclude my rant, why do companies like IBM act hip by hosting business conferences in SL? Like real professionals will go out of their way to create an avatar to watch some IBM dweeb present their latest business strategy in SL.
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -11/+37100's of years from now Second Life will likely be considered the "first real videogame".
No, I haven't played it, thank the lord. But the way that the tech community raves about it is very different from the way they rave about fantasy games. (WoW, FFXI, etc.)
It's all about immersion. The graphics aren't impressive, but that's fine. The world is very realistic in that it reacts very realistically to your actions, depending on what you're doing. Some of the things the game accomplished many tech geeks would have told you was impossible just shortly ago. - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24If I understand these things correctly, Second Life allows some sort of intelligence or scriptability for the objects. The flying penises is another example. It wasn't just penises lying around, it was flying penises. I've also heard of "viruses" spreading.
- expert01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24More details would be nice.
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Broomett, is collecting figurines, or going to bars, or obsessing over your clothing and knicknacks any more of a life than videogames? They're all just hobbies. Every single hobby can take on the argument that the person who enjoys it has no life.
Even bicycle riding, or rock climbing. Those people have no life, they spend all their time doing something their other friends aren't into! They aren't experiences all the other things in the world they could choose from, what happened to their life!? They just climb those stupid boulders! There's not even a prize up there! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20@radu79 - Welcome, Sid Meier!
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20odiously
- cakestick, on 10/12/2007, -14/+31I'm sorry, but Second Life is 98% certified for retards.
- elitexero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18"Wow, I'm famous. My avatar is in that picture."
Just... wow. I cannot believe you're not ashamed to even say that. - Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18How the hell do you play second life "disrespectfully"? You don't pay for the baby-furries you have sex with?
(to people who've not seen SL: yes, there is baby-furry prostitution in SL) - Polly, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18While not an MMO, Defcon by Introversion allows you to nuke the ***** out of each others' countries.
- dugR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15exactly, its sad and pathetic but extremely funny and entertaining at the same time. And the only thing you have to pay for is in game real estate, you can play it for free btw.
- dugR, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16haha, dude its just a game, don't get your panties all up in a bundle. Just because you play video games, does not mean you are missing out from a real life, you sound like an old concerned soccer mom worried about her children
just relax - SuperJimmyJimbo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15looks like the online world needs a JACK BAUER!
http://bauernuked.ytmnd.com/ - SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20I wanna see vids of nukes and virtual mayhem, dugg down, lame.
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15You could say that about all videogames, though. Do you not play any at all, is your life that fulfilling?
Honestly, if you love videogames, then playing a videogame is a part of life. It is life. It's real. You're really interracting with something.
Just because some people are out getting drunk, or well... What do people do? Goto bars and get drunk? I don't see how that is any more fulfilling than a videogame, although honestly both are a waste of time. - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Emo is a noun now!?
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -9/+21And this is odiously the answer.
- LemonDefragger, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18How many times must we talk about how people who are in "second life" do not have "first lives" before we realize that its a bad pun?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19But you know how the REAL community talks baout it? Simple. "What? Second what? Never heard of it."
- rpn700, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11When Second Life devolves into Fallout I will have found a wonderful game.
- bluemansteele, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Ok folk.... does anyone want to know what really happened?
SL has scripts. Some scripts "push" other avatars. (BTW this can be rendered useless by setting your land to "no push".)
Nukes are not new in Second Life.
Someone scripts something to "push" every avatar out of a Simulator (Sim) and make lots of noise and smoke while doing it... AKA a nuke.
It happens EVERY DAY and can't believe it made news. Only because it was "dugg" by those who think this is something unique.
BTW doing this in SL is great way to get banned from it.
What's the next headline? "Angry Troll Posts Lewd Remark on Blog Comments" ? - bigp3rm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@ hiPpymIck
Jesus that guy needs a 3rd life - sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12and so Utopia crumbles.
- jake8689, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11a seconed life civil war would be cool, vets vs noobs, i would sign up for a piece of that
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12--ohharrow
So those are the pictures Powell showed to the UN when lobbying for the war in Iraq. - HemlockUltimate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Kinda makes me want to play...
kinda. - YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I won't digg you down, but I will point out the irony that a Digg commenter is telling us to get a life.
- bigwig, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12second life doesn't have 2 million people playing it. Only 1.5 million unique people have logged in. Only 250k have logged in more than once.
- SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11someone should start up a second life griefer clan or something, where millions of people who think second life is stupid can nuke stuff and attack people with flying dildos. now thats comedy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9How appropriate, you fight like a cow.
- pixelmixer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11The deal with secondlife is you can create a branding. The reason IBM uses it is because they can advertise their product while videoconferencing with each other and clients. There are also telecommuting classes being held in secondlife at Ball State University where the students go into secondlife and have formal meetings, then go on "field trips" to interesting places around Secondlife that spawn creativity.
That said.. I dont really like "playing" the game, as there really isnt a whole lot in the game that would attract a traditional gamer. That said... its interesting how many women actually play it who wouldnt otherwise plat traditional video games like shooters, MMORPG's, etc... -
