An in-depth look at The Ship, a unique/original game on the Source engine.
forums.loneshadow.com — Unique games like this by small companies never get enough attention. This is a great game with a very original idea and it deserves to get more exposure! Give these developers the support they deserve, it's a very low price for such a high quality game.

- Kschreck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I have not tried the beta yet but I have heard great things about this game. I will likely check it out eventually. Digg +1.
- YHCIR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This review has lots of nice screenshots =)

Also, it's worth having a go at the original. (only link i can find is here http://mods.moddb.com/3615/the-ship/downloads/ ) There are about 2 servers that sometimes have players, but the new (BETA?) source game gets listed under your serverbrowser, and if you try to join it starts pre-loading the source version.
From the screenshots, The ship:source looks so much better than the original!

- Honethite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I found the original The Ship on Half-Life 1 to be a uniquely and interesting MOD. Very nice article ShadowXOR, you've really enticed me to pre-order this game.
Cheers.- Protonz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I also played the original HL1 version, but there were few players.
Favorite tactic:
1 - Plant a remote triggered bomb by the bed in sick-bay.
2 - Infect your prey.
3 - When you get the message that they are healing, press the trigger!
- Protonz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I also played the original HL1 version, but there were few players.
- Derter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Seem to be a great game, will have to look for this.
- Sk8SkaNJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Preload it now for next weeks release.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i've been waiting for a creative and fun fps esque game, no more mindless cookie cutter fps, yay.
- montiff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1damn i got owned.. lolz
- montiff, on 10/12/2007, -35/+3What exactly do you do in this game...
Is it Sims on a cruise ??- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18did you even read the article, any of it ? it * might * help.
"RTFA" as others say. - Molly, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2RTFQ FTW!
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18did you even read the article, any of it ? it * might * help.
- ShadowXOR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5montiff it should all be in my article. Basically you kill people, but have Sims-like needs you must take care of, which gives people a chance to kill you while you handle them. Check out the trailer.
- montiff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1thanks for actually typing 4 a to 5 words description.
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This game sounds awesome!
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Shadow:
Are there lots of NPCs? It seems like it would be fun with more people walking around... - ShadowXOR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, there can be a lot of NPCs. I'm 99% sure it's a server option how many there are.
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Shadow:
- chking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A game I'm really looking forward to playing. Already pre-ordered it.
- viclopez, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1seems like counter strike on a cs_theship map :/
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6that map came from the game "The Ship" on the half life engine
- greyghst168, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's not that I don't enjoy a fast-paced multiplayer shooter like Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament, but there's something to be said for a slow-paced, stealth based, 'shooter' where you're not the only one being sneaky like in games like Splinter Cell. I think this article just convinced me to pre-order it when I get home from work.
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -19/+1not that unique...i'v played the same game on the half life engine. It's not that good. BUt maybe this will be better
- commongiga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11does anyone ever rtfa? it's by the same people that made the mod, but now a full fledged game.
- etempest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I tried it when it was a free add (mod) on using the HL1 engine and it was a pretty fun game.. the only problem was not that many people were playing it.
If it takes off, I will buy it.. but not sure if they will get enough player base. I do hope they do and they do deserve it. - darkzealot89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1game looks sweet, probably will get it if i can convince a friend of mine to get it too. digg and blogged
- ohsoserial, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I played the original HL mod and found it really buggy. It was wicked fun, though. I hope they fixed a lot of the original problems. Digg up, plus preordered.
- TheAnti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I played the original too, it was a great concept but yeah, it ran really bad on the HL1 engine and was super buggy. I already preordered this though, just because the game had such great potential. Looking forward to seeing and killing some of you guys soon.
- jguy584, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When i first saw this game on steam a few weeks ago it looked like it was either gonna be a great original game or something that just totally sucked. I'm glad to hear the former
- nixr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I pre-ordered this one as soon as it was available. I really like what valve is doing with Steam. This is a great way to get some decent games out to the masses. The Ship looks like a real fun time. I can't wait.
- VerbalIronyX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I cant wait for this game!
They have been working on the beta for a while now, and I know the original will still be buggy.
But its still going to be hella fun! - jpcoombs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just got my pre-order
- aristofa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it's amazing!!!
- persaltier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks really cool and different from what's out there. The FAQ on the official site was a little confusing as to the official release date, but I'll pre-order it anyways and hopefully July 11th is the date and not sometime in September :)
- WeeklyGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that looks like loads of fun. totally gonna pre-order
- kryx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sounds like a multiplayer version of Hitman, especially with the changing of clothes -- definitely gonna pre-order this one...
- dracflamloc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This sounds great. I've been needing a stealth game since the thief series ended...

You can afford an ISP but you can't afford $19.99? Support independents, buy the damn game. - LMN8R, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1hahahah good luck playing an online game, from steam no less, on an illegal copy.
retard
- MadEnvoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@tezprice
- h4x0r1ng, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1This game looks like ass.
- calorifer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0this game is NOT original. The original concept comes from a quake 2 mod Assassin Quake. There is nothing inovating or original about this game.
http://planetquake.gamespy.com/View.php?view=MOTW.Detail&id=109- Arrowhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd still say it's pretty unique and original in a world where team deathmatch, CTF, and objective based gameplay dominate the current multiplayer environment. So what if some obscure mod from days gone by shared a similar basic concept? This one is going to deliver unique and original gameplay to the masses!
Not to mentiion that the old mod you pointed out didn't even incorpriate any kind of 'needs' system to keep players busy. This system which is found in The Ship has a huge effect on the gameplay for which you just can't find anywhere else.

Great article! - Aharoni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This will probably get buried, but am I the only one smelling marketing posts?
This whole "article" and several posts here sound like they have been made by the marketing guy of this game's development company.
I'd just like to say that I haven't played the game. Maybe its great, maybe it isn't (I have to say that in MY opinion the screenshots don't really make me want to play this game)...- Arrowhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well, I know for a fact that shadow is simply a fan like myself. this isn't any kind of 'official' marketing folks!
- Stri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That looks really good and I love the cartoonie animation
- syl1985, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Stri
I really enjoy the way the characters are stylised too, it goes very well with the art deco theme.
@Aharoni
I would not be too fussed even if this was by their marketing dept., although that is purely speculation, it is an indy developers first crack and it deserves some free publicity, it's not like they have wads of cash to throw at the masses anyway.
It looks very interesting, but I don't intend on running steam anytime in the near future, I digg it! - PlasmaSnk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This game is a very well done game, and the original isn't that far off from the source game. I've had fun with the mod when I played it, although there weren't any people playing at some points because of the low popularity of it, it was always fun taking a bazooka and blowing NPCs up :D
- reefinyateef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've never played the HL1 mod, but this game looks very interesting. we played assassins, a similiar game, as freshmen in college, so I'm looking forward to this.
