- Dikarika, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Maybe unrelated, but as a 360 owner myself, I am hard pressed to look objectively at the ps3.
I catch myself looking for whatever negative media I can find related to the ps3. I don't know if its because of my preference of my Xbox over my ps2 just continuing, or because deep down I want a ps3, but time and money are obvious issues...
I will say the Wii looks awesome in person, not graphically, but interactively... :) - beavord, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22http://www.duggmirror.com/gaming_news/An_Xbox_360_Fanboy_s_Reactions_to_the_PS3
- kakwakas, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20It's probably because you already paid a nice chunk of money for a 360 and you don't like the thought of it being inferior (which it's not in a number of aspects, really).
- SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21The Ps3 isn't physically capable of displaying textures as detailed as in Gears of War. No amount of time will affect that physical fact in regards to the hardware. So because of that, I'm just gonna have to go ahead, and uh, disagree with you there, mmmmkay? /Bill Lumbergh voice
- SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -10/+24The Ps3 can seriously go suck some monkey nuts. And I'm not talking little squirrel monkey nuts, I mean massive King Kong sized nuts. The hardware isn't as powerful as the Xbox 360, and not nearly as innovative as the Wii. Sony has blatantly ripped off both of those machines in numerous areas. Not to mention, there isn't a single (non-exclusive) game franchise on the Playstation that I give a flying ***** about, which can't be said for either of the other consoles.
And for Ps3 fans who say that the hardware doesn't matter, and that the Xbox has a crappy games library, here are some games came/are coming out on the 360 recently/in the near future:

You're talking about Gears' textures, right? How about Epic (a dev that is making games for the 360 AND the Ps3) coming out as saying so? The Xbox 360 has 512mb of unified memory that can be allocated anywhere, whereas the Ps3 has 256mb of dedicated graphics RAM. That means that 256mb is the absolute most memory that can be used for textures. On the 360, it obviously can't use the full 2x the memory of the Ps3, because SOME of that 512mb will be needed elsewhere, but above and beyond 256mb will happen regularly. On the Ps3, it doesn't matter if the majority of the other 256mb of XDR isn't being used, it will sit there and not be taken advantage of. On the 360, if there is a decline in one use of the memory, that memory becomes available to another.
As far as the hardware on the 360 being better in other areas... the GPU is almost up to DX10/SM4.0 spec, where the Ps3's RSX is not. The Xenos is clocked faster, and has a unified shader architecture, which is obviously better because nVidia (makers of the Ps3 chip that DOESN'T use this tech), and ATI are both using it in their next-gen PC GPUs. The RSX is most comparable to a 7800GT and already outdated by newer nVidia PC GPUs, where the Xenos in the 360 is pretty much a slower X2900 card, which is the PC ATI GPU that won't even be released until after the new year. I don't even have to explain the gap between those two PC cards, and they are the ones most comparable to the graphics hardware in the Ps3 and Xbox 360, respectively.
On the CPU front, Ubisoft (another cross-platform dev) has said that not only is the 360 CPU better for doing AI, it is much easier to take advantage of that ability, vs. the Cell (this will be apparent in Ubi's next new IP, Assassin's Creed). However, the Cell has been shown to excel at physics calculations (there are many sources for this), so that is one area where it will definitely exceed the Xbox 360. But again, that is if the devs are willing to put in the time and effort to take advantage of that... advantage. - gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I agree
I can’t figure out if people who say that Xbox doesn’t have a good library are trying to convince us or themselves. - DrakeTheRedEye, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Yeah, I would call him a 'console fanboy' looking for the newest thing out there, like many gamers.

The Wii interests me but as a new father, i think I can only afford one, and that maybe the 360, and as of now the game im developing looks better on the 360 than the wii or the ps3 so... - tendonut, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I guess anyone who doesn't think the PS3 is the end-all is automatically labeled a Fanboy of the opposing consoles....

- JaytB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I think you should do some digging into past articles about the hardware of the PS3 being so significantly more powerful than that of the 360's.
Yes the cell can outperform the 360 CPU (in most but certainly not all situations), but I'm not so sure about the GPU. As I understand it, the GPU of the 360 is way more next-gen than that of the PS3. And, again to my simple understanding, when it comes to graphics, the GPU is the most important factor, period. - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15It's probably because, like so many others, you hate Sony for all their idiotic decisions they've made lately and want them to fail because of them.

Are you sure you own a PS3? I worked on one of the titles you mentioned for about 400 hours of my life in October up until final submission. My memory recalls that you can add a user to your Friends list (or "buddy list" as you called it), but they are not separated by game. In fact, you can't even add a friend in game without going back to the XMB (By pressing the PlayStation Button and select Quit Game). You can however "mark" players in Ridge Racer but that is just to keep tabs on them and does not have anything to do with the Friends functionality.
Take a look straight from the horse's mouth: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/friends/index.html
I don't own a Xbox 360 nor do I plan to own one in the future, but this seems quite removed from the functionality of the 360 firmware (which allows you to add friends in, I think, all games, log in and out of profiles in game, etc). Just where do you see the advantage of the PS3 in this case? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+20It seems that if you aren't a Nintendo gamer, Liberal, Linux user, or against Bush you are a fanboy

In any case you should have at least read a few of the items on the list so you'd know that he was right in saying that the Xbox 360 has some pretty good games lined up or already available. - Yez70, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6...push sensitive for like racing games...
That would be an awesome feature for a standard controller. - piper999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It always makes me laugh when people feel the need to tell everyone else that they are blocking someone.
Why don't they just block the people that have upset them and move on? Apart from anything else the person they just blocked gets free rein to talk trash about them with no comeback. - scyform, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7The writer's response to someone with a comment similar to yours:
I completely agree... which I is why I also noted that the Resistance even comes up lacking when compared to Call of Duty 2 which was a 360 launch title.
As a hardcore gamer, I really wanted to see Resistance push Gears on the graphics front (which many in the Sony commmunity had purported to be the case) and it would have been an "Acheivement" of substance (pun intended) amidst the PS3 hysteria. Unfortunately, it's just not the case. - ryllharu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3kakwakas is correct. The effect is called Cognitive Dissonance, the scientific term for buyer's remorse. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance
You just spent a lot of money on something, you'll be quicker to talk about it's good qualities, an emphasize the bad qualities of competing models to make yourself feel better about your purchase.
I've got a 360, and I do it too. - SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@kodek,
They are mostly alphabetical, but it looks off because they are also grouped together into genres. - zodieman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4All I have to say is I love my 360. I bought it a few months ago in anticipation of the new games now coming and I don't regret it at all. The PS3 does not interest me at all. The higher price for one and Sony's lackluster track record so far. They just can't seem to get anything right lately.
I'm glad to see that MS decided to make the HD drive an external one because the whole HD/Blu_Ray thing is still up in the air, so this way they can change if they need to. My $$ are on HD though as Sony proprietary stuff never seems to catch on and the HD has much more and better content not to mention a lower price tag. - Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8All I know is that the PS3 was suppossed to be released nearly a year ago, and so developers have had ALL that time to continue developing games, with only the blueray problem to work out in the end, which should have been relatively minor. So the Xbox360 and the PS3 should both have some pretty damn good games out, however, Xbox360 seems to be way ahead.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"I can’t figure out if people who say that Xbox doesn’t have a good library are trying to convince us or themselves."
Well, to be fair, they didn't for a while. They are just recently getting some good games in there. Not to say the initial titles weren't good, but they weren't anything I would consider a "buy me!!!" item, which would be something along the lines of Halo, Zelda, GTA, Metal Gear Solid, Metroid, so on.
Check out the 360 rankings: http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/simpleratings.asp
Most of the good games on that list came out months after initial launch, some of them in just the past few weeks. In all honesty, Gears of War is the first massive title for the system. I believe that game alone has propelled sales of the system.
I was one of those "not really any good games" type of people until last week, but actually all 3 games I purchased game out this month. - merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In order for Sony to get my to buy a PS3, they need to bring some games to the market that i can't play on my 360 or Wii...
Give me a new Katamari game, MGS4, and a PS3 with a cheaper price tag of about $100 bucks... and im in. - kodek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You could have at least put them in order, you know :P
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I have to say, "fanboy" is one of the most overused trendy word of the decade. So sick of it already.
Anyway, the PS3 will be fine. So many people knocking it, but it's in the same boat that the 360 was in - not really any good launch titles, and rather expensive hardware.
It takes a while for the big stuff to come out, which is why I never understood the release hype. Honestly, why the rush if there's nothing that breathtaking to go along with it? So really you pay $600+ to play some average racing/sports games that totally don't even touch a fraction of the system's capabilities. Doesn't mean the system sucks, it just means the easier-to-develop titles are first, while the more intricate designs (GTA4, MGS4) definitely take longer.
Then people make reviews based on comparisons of said games creating extremely skewed and biased reviews. Give it a year and the PS3 will be just as popular as the 360/Wii. Well, maybe, because I admit I don't know much about the system itself.
For example, the 360's success is mainly the integration of XBox Live, the arcade system, leader boards, demos, all that. I'm not sure how PS3's system is structured. The Wii's is very similar, although I don't have any multiplayer games to see if you can do a co-op Monkey Ball run, or some sort of high-score competitive deal like you can with most 360 games. Plus the Wii has it's innovation in how you actually play. If PS3 has slipped on any of this, they're in trouble, but otherwise should be fine. - HIPAA_Notic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3paying $599 + $x for component cables while dodging bullets in the cold creates considerable cognitive dissonance.

Confessions of a Xbox 360 Fanboy
Let me start by saying that I have owned every console dating back to the Atari 2600 VCS, and I have walked home with every console on launch day since the 3DO. I am not trying to brag, in fact if anything, it may be a desperate cry for help (the thought of a new game system out “in the wild” and not in my house would probably keep me up at night. I share this with you, in hopes of trying to put my thoughts and comments in perspective and with an attempt to objectively chronicle my reactions to the launch results and capabilities of the Sony PS3.
A couple of weeks ago when it was clearly evident, that the only way I was going to bring home a PS3 on launch day was to either pay through the nose or take three days of vacation and go for a camping trip in a local retailers parking lot, I opted for the former and made arrangements with a local eBayer (who as fate would have it… had actually mistakenly picked up a preorder for a PS3 when he thought he was waiting in line for a Wii) to take our transaction offline and at a more reasonable price.
Acquisition
I met my seller in the parking lot of an area Gamestop @ 11:45 PM on Thursday night, where I paid the remaining balance on the preorder (plus extended warranty) and was back on the road to my place a couple of minutes after midnight. I ended up with the 60 GB model, an extra controller and a few games:
* Resistance: Fall of Man
* Ridge Racer 7
* Madden 2007
* Genji: Days of the Blade
* Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire
* Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom
With an HDMI cable (which I had purchased the night before in anticipation) the setup was extremely easy. Actually took longer to get it out of the box than it did to have plugged in and powered on. That being said… the first thing I needed to do was grab the latest Firmware (version 1.1). The setup to connect to my Wi-Fi network was also extremely easy (if not the exact same interface & process to get my PSP on a Wi-Fi network).
Games / Gameplay
Of the 3 Next Generation Systems, I think even the ardent Fanboy would have a time arguing that the PS3 doesn’t have the weakest launch lineup. Resistance: Fall of Man is easily star of the launch, and while it plays well, it is pretty standard FPS fare, and not only did the graphics not come close to rivaling Gears of War (something I was very much hoping for) but they are no more impressive than Call of Duty 2 (still an impressive mark – but less than I was expecting to see a full year later). Madden 2007 seems to be an exact port from the 360 version and will most likely come down to controller preference (more on that one later). Ridge Racer 7 was the only game that really seemed to offer more than the 360 counterpart, including more detail and a somewhat more muted color palette. Genji: Days o f the Blade plays like a cross between 99 Nights and Ninja Gaiden… straight up one player action here. Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom is a little like a cross between Gauntlet & Diablo. Button mashing fun… that I really enjoyed (looking forward to taking this one online). Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire plays like a developers demo for Mech Assault – absolutely nothing redeeming about this game – I look at the case and think “there’s 20 minutes of my life I’m never going to get back”.
User Interface
The interface is an exact replica of the PSP user interface. Nothing too exciting, but it certainly is functional.
Sixaxis Controller
The controller is not as cheap feeling as I had thought based on my impressions of a demo unit at E3. The lack of the rumble feature is Very Much missed, especially in Ridge Racer and Madden. Also the only means of charging the enclosed battery is to connect the controller via a USB cable to the PS3 which means I spent the first two hours of playtime early on the morning of the 19th, 3 feet away from the PS3 & screen. Also – the Sixaxis controller will only charge when the PS3 is powered on (Hint: Plugged into my G5 it charges just fine as well). The PS “button” which serves as the similar function as the guide button on the 360, looks cheap and tacked on. The Good: The Sixaxis feels nearly identical to the PS2 Dual Shock controller (which was a damned fine controller). The Bad: The motion capabilities feel tacked on (if not worthless) on the launch lineup and the lack of rumble is sorely missed. The Ugly: With the exception of the motion sensing capability (which has yet to demonstrate a usefulness or worthwhile purpose), the 360 controller is superior in every other way.
Backwards Compatibility
I’ve spent more time digging back and playing some of the more recent PS2 releases (SOCOM 3, Star Trek: Encounters, FF XII, and Ace Combat) than I have on any of the PS3 titles I have. The negative side of BC on the PS3 is that the PS1 & PS2 games are not enhanced graphically in any way and actually play in their original resolution (no upscaling), which means your old games… really look old. But they do play well… and all of my PS1 & PS2 titles have played thus far without issue.
Sony Online Store & Playstation Network
The Sony Online store, like so many of the games, feels half-done, with no compelling content, and a slow and labored interface that begs for a future update/re-design. The largest differentiator is the online capabilities. The Playstation Network is free… and that’s about all I can say about that. Xbox Live for the 360, by comparison, is able to offer a seamless and consistent online presence and experience, the Xbox Live Marketplace is relatively quick and straightforward (not to mention content laden) and Game Achievements have become an extremely addictive means by which to gauge my gaming capabilities and a feature set that is sorely lacking in the Sony space.
Final Thoughts
Trying to be as objective as possible, my initial thoughts are that Sony should have waited another 6 months or more to release this thing. Everything has this “half done feel” and with the exception of Backwards compatibility, there is absolutely nothing that the PS3 does better than an HD-DVD attached Xbox 360 doesn’t do better (and not just slightly better – but orders of magnitude better).
The PS3 is easily a major leap forward over the PS2, the Blu-Ray movie capabilities, granted it was with Talladega Nights (and for the "Love of Cinema" why was THIS the title they packed with it?) look great. The system, at best offers a similar gameplay experience of that of the Xbox 360 literally, with many of the launch titles ports of from the 360. The Sony exclusives, with the exception of Resistance and Untold Legends are marginal and disappointing.
Purchasing a PS3 is a solid purchase if you already have an established Playstation game library, or if you are looking to catch up on a number of PS2 exclusives. Purchasing a PS3 is also a bet on the future capabilities of the machine, but with so much already available elsewhere and no clear indication that things (specifically Sony’s online strategy) are going to change for the better anytime soon, for the average consumer it seems a needless gamble of time and money.
Am I disappointed I bought one, not really, after all it is sitting here in my media room and as a “gadget loving early adopter” I can sleep at night. But for the foreseeable future, it will easily be the machine of second resort behind my Xbox 360.

__________________________________________________________________________________ - SniperXtreme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I’m hard on all consoles and favour none unless they are actually better (has more positive points). In this regard I haven't liked a Nintendo console since the SNES, and yes that includes the Wii, which I have played quite a bit. I found the PS2 and Xbox to be an overall draw. As for the new generation I have been pretty open to it and personally prefer the 360, it has plenty of good games, good graphics and excellent features. The PS3 is hard to judge as it's not out in Australia yet but I have read a lot on it (both good and bad) and it seems like it lacks in many ways. As for the Wii, just like everything Nintendo makes its a gimmick which isn't necessarily a bad thing but seeing as I only rarely feel like playing party games and I'm not a Zelda fanboi the only real positive point is how cheap it is.
- JoJoDilio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2very fair and unbiased. A nice post.
- OwdenBowden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I do not have a problem with XBL nor do I have any issues with paying for it (as long as they keep it within the cost of a game). When you get to the "Free" services [the kind that Sony seems to be offering] I just know that eventually you are going to screw the pooch and it will cost you. Remember that Sony is the same company that secretly installed Root Kits on computers via their music acts CD. And if you think that they won't do something similar down the road - well... I have a bridge outside my house I want to sell you. I might get a PS3 about a year from now but that depends if MS hasn't come out with an Xbox180 portable.

People have this wrong. First of all the GPU of the 360 Has only ONE FEATURE of DX10. Nvidia does use unified shading architecture ( as you can see with the 8800). And USA is more efficient it doesn't mean that regular chips cannot achieve the same effects it just means that more power and cycles are expended to do so.
Considering Devs reported getting the finel PS3 Dev kit after E3 of 06, then it obviously means they havent worked to thier best in a year. -
