ampedesports.com — A group of American World of Warcraft players made the trip to China this weekend to compete with all the gold farmers for $30,000 in the first WoW tournament. Sadly, the team bears an uncanny resemblance to Kenny/Kyle in the WoW Southpark episode.

The players involved paid a $65 entry fee and registered online but no prerequisites were required. However, you're correct. There are only 64 teams competing and a wait list of 200+.

  • dorkino, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I actually gained quite a bit of weight playing WoW (imagine that) - probably about 50 lbs in 2 yrs. Who cared, because I never left my house. I even work from home, so the only house-leaving I ever did was to go buy more food to stuff my fat face. Eventually my g/f left me (yeah, I had one, and she played too). I canceled my account last year when she left, and traded WoW for a RL activity of bike riding. Not your everyday Huffy, but a rather fancy road bike that I took out on one of our local rail trails here. I managed to lose almost all of that 50 lbs in about 6 months last year just from riding and modifying my diet to remove mac n cheese and pizza as my primary staples, as well as the 12 or 18 pack of beer I would put back almost nightly playing this stupid game.

    Life is much better for me now.

And for people who are very competitive in gaming, and have the right kind of personality, these games can be devistating. I'd say most of it is personal, because I didn't have a hard time not playing, but for a lot of my friends, they really just cant stop very easily. To the right personality, this game is crack.
    • dorkino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1While I agree that we should all exercise extreme self-control and moderation over all areas of our lives, that just doesn't happen for most of us. I just happen to be one of many who have an *extremely* addictive personality. And that's not just an excuse to be lazy and do bad things -- I can become addicted to "good" things as well, as evidenced by my addiction to bike riding that I developed last year. The good news is that addicts like us can also drop the addictions suddenly and completely cold turkey. We just need the proper motivation to do so. I dropped a 20 year addiction to Diet Coke (was drinking upwards of a 12 pack/day) cold one day and never looked back. I did the same with cigarettes after smoking 1-2 packs/day for 8 years.

      The key is to surround yourself with positive ideas and influences and get hooked on those. Unfortunately, a video game such as WoW offers very little in the way of positive contributions to one's life. I spent almost every waking hour of two years of my life immersed in a virtual world that left me with nothing to show for it except extra weight, a lost girlfriend, and increased levels of depression.

      Building a website, maintaining a network, or something of that nature is productive and beneficial. Playing a game, while fun, just costs you money and time that you could have spent on better things.

      That said, I play WoW myself, it's a cool game. But it doesn't take up a lot of my time. This is completely off-topic though.

    And how there is a PvP tourney for WoW when to my knowledge its just about spaming the jump key and mashing those F keys into submission...

I hate when people think they're better than other people because someone looks a certain way or enjoys a certain activity. I hate comments such as "LOL WoW nerds look they're so fat and OMG they dont know what girls are."

    I also hate the other side of the coin, the people who defend against such nonsensical posts, the kind of people who say things like, "You guys are exactly the same, and you're incredibly insecure with yourselves!" Yeah, right, like the idiots mentioned in my first paragraph are concerned with their psychological reactions to a picture of WoW gamers.

    I also hate posts like this one. My OWN post. Posts that that just whine about the comments going on and rag on everybody... and I could choose not to write BS like this, but I feel compelled to, and I'm forced to out of principle, or spite, or freakin' something... I just hate situations like this. We all suck!

    It's almost hillarious. They're known for being a total dick guild to anyone they see, and now that I see that they're all mostly 20 and fit the stereotypical "we're angry we don't get laid" nerd profile, it all makes sense!

    Knowing that the game is "run" by these 20 year old kids really makes me glad I ditched WoW for better things in life. (and yes, I've been ganked and camped by most of the dickbags in Notorious, and a few of them in the article. You may have ganked me noto, but I'm feeling pretty good about the end result! If only there was the same amount of openness from other guilds!)

    This is incorrect: the players at the tournament won't even be playing their own characters. They will be handed characters whose levels are maxed out with standardized, equal gear.

    This is only possible because of a recent in-game implementation by Blizzard: something called the Arena. People make an Arena team, and those teams enter 5 at a time (or 3 at a time, or 2 at a time. There are 3 brackets). They then face another team in a fight-to-the-death, last team standing wins.

    In the real game, you cannot enter these Arenas unless you are the maximum level. As for gear, the best gear available is actually acquired BY BEING GOOD AT ARENAS, meaning that the people mentioned above have good gear because they rocked at the Arenas, not the other way around.

    As already stated by several in the article -- the system is far from perfect, but it's about as close as any MMO has ever gotten to competitive play, and Blizzard is clearly pouring tons of effort into making it more so. We'll see how it develops.

      Played the game on/off until Level 70 and cancelled my account. Fun, but not as addicting as people claim it to be.
