- neurokaotix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Sad? It brought these people pleasure to play this game and it didn't hurt anyone (IRL). Sad is looking down upon the joy of others with condescension.

And in this remarkable other world we don't need pseudonyms or disguises to contemplate and then act on feelings of ill will, oft resulting in a poor standard of communal living on the aggregate scale! How splendid - no bits or bytes. Participate in something new/revolutionary you're automatically on society's ***** list. Can you really attach contextual value to people's sources of entertainment? Of course watching the various enthralling summer flicks is clearly better than participating in the creation of the once nonexistent. If it isn't tangible, is its value subsequently diminished? The emotions illicited by this medium are just as legitimate as most other "real" actions.

He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would suffice," (Look it up). - igibson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4that is awesome..... the coordination and utter brilliance makes me realy want to play eve online now.....
- ssb8mao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3wow, amazing, this makes me want to play eve online now...
This reminded me of the USSR and the USA in the cold war, and what could have happened - nukethewhales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They took a job playing a videogame that paid $16,500 dollars a year. Probably much less because that is shared between everyone involved. But how much money did you make playing videogames last year?
- ChaosElement, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Sad? It brought these people pleasure to play this game and it didn't hurt anyone (IRL). Sad is looking down upon the joy of others with condescension."
I agree 110% with this statement. - mrjkwik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2personally, i dont get mmorpg. i certainly get into one. but its ignorant and egotistical to sit there and say these people are sad. if thats their hobby, so be it. perhaps you can find one that doesnt look down on others.
- mindsinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now thats freak'n cool. +digg x 2
- Timbrwlvz1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was simply awesome.
- outlawed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Amazing.
That's the kind of realism I'd expect in a vitual fantasy world.
These people who think it was morally wrong don't understand-you playing with risks. It's a virtual world. It's fantasy. And just like the real world, you can get *ucked by anyone. If it happens it happens. Thats life. Regardless if it is morally wrong, it happened. That's what you get for playing a virtual fantasy world with an evil side-they're evil. The DO evil things.
I for one think that this kind of thing should be available in every mmo, because it adds another depth of fun.
Great work, and amazing planning. Sheer brilliance. - piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow. What if the person committed suicide because of this?
On the other hand... it's completely awesome!!! - rkrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@lnvariant
Spelling error, sosume. It's not an active pursuit of mine to use big words as indicated by your "Mr. Dictionary" comment. To clarify my argument, I didn't mean that gaming (in the online sense) was "revolutionary." My contention is that this relatively new form of gaming reflects a remarkable shift in the online social community and, in a grander sense, the evolution of our perspectives on acceptable behavior. Technology is an awesome power - but not nearly as curious or far-reaching as its resulting social ripple effect. Do you realize that in the 18th and early 19th century, novels were not taught by university professors because they were designated senseless filth. Classic literature was the standard for education - any challenges to that authority were considered heretical. Therefore, when Flaubert writes about the modern woman before she even exists I consider this evolution to be remarkable... not so much the independent action, but the aggregate of these combined instances.
There is a distinction between digital and real; though the differences are apparent, how we express ourselves is a constant. This is simply another cultural outlet as novels were to those who lived before us and as science was to those who lived before them (so on and so forth). If I offended you or seemed patronizing, I apologize. That's not to say I won't be using a "copious lexicon." Nah, I'm just pulling your leg. No hard feelings - or soft ones for that matter. =P - Xertion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would totally love this type of option in WoW. Doing the same things over and over gets boring.
- omnithrope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very impressive.
*clap* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is my first time seeing a virtual heist of epic proportions
- LarsG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The heist was awesome because it was done in-character and within the rules of the game. That is, Guiding Hand took a contract for taking down the corp. They infiltrated the corp using their main characters (no playing around with alts, they did it with well known GH members). They mapped the corp's assets and planned the take-down. They executed the take-down perfectly.
If it had been done with a bunch of alts simply with the aim to rob some random hapless corp blind it would have been different. - pandemic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All praise The Icelanders
- ciphex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i don't play MMORPGs... but that ***** is just tight.
- ssb8mao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@sinfony
in the cold war, many top ranking officials in the USA were in fact Russian Operatives, or American double agents - BT-Wang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ahhhhh... the life sucking force of this hideously evil genre has finally given ME some entertainment.
- spaceninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MMO's are pretty cool, but allowing this is just awesome. I can't say I got into EVE too much, but I found this an interesting read none the less.
MMO's do take alot of time. And they don't suck just because you say they do... I think HALO and all other FPS games suck, but that is an opinion. Not a fact. What these people did took alot of skill and time. No matter if it were done in the real world or the digital. - positron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that kind of open ended political and social maneuvering is something i would expect to find happening in a text mud, not a contemporary 3d mmorpg. here's to hoping this depth of interaction becomes more and more commonplace in the next generation of mmorpgs.
- NINJ4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's cool because they were able to get the money but it's sad because they're getting paid less than a janitor.
- XorSystem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1really really cool:)
I'm not an MMORPG'er but I thought that was some nice story telling:) - robotplague, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was a pretty awesome read
- Invariant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My apologies if this is a double post. The load after I submit times out.
@rkrock
It's important to draw a line between reality and fantasy. If the victim of this scheme were to become depressed because of it then a problem would exist. It's very, very important to have perspective. A game should never be a top priority in a person's life. Yeah, this is a straw man but I'm adding an addendum to your verbose apologia for MMORPGs.
Also, you mean "the emotions _elicited_ by..." Nice try, Mr. Dictionary.
Oh, and you're not being a revolutionary by playing games. A lot of the comments on this story are against condescending attitudes. Take a hint.
On topic: I can never get into RPGs in general but this still smacks of extreme planning. A job well done. - robdixon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I believe that this is an inevitable evolution of the online gaming community.
Now if we can just get "Big Brother" to butt out this could turn out interesting!
just my two cents.
^_^v peace - woodydx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Holy crap. That was incredible. The skill and brilliance of the plan...
If only all MMOPRGs allowed this to happen... - xzen54321, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PC gamer is dumb these days (too many ads) this happend several months ago BTW. And from a eve online player, EVE is the most insane game ever; and to the guy bitching about receptiveness up there, shut up, because its only repetitive if you want it to be or are to lazy to figure out how to have more fun than running missions.
- exobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1:o
That's just ***** awesome :D - kinobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excellent stuff. I don't care if they have a life or not bla bla bla I'm just looking at it for what it is, and it's a job well done.
- tynin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I read this a long time ago. I do recall it being quite an amazing but sad tale. A good read in anycase.
- mspencer712, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"What a monumental waste of time" . . . ?
Yeah, they should've spent their leisure time playing a game, instead of doing...something...that was fun... oh, crap, never mind. - ajamison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Incredible. This is what MMO's are all about....It's definitely made me interested in EVE.
As much as I'd love to do something like that in an MMO, my humble home WoW server (Thunderhorn) will probably never see something that huge, nor do I have the sheer amount of time to invest in something like that.
Still blown away. Great Digg. - archer75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been a casual EVE player off and on since beta. Never seen anything like this happen before. Wish I had been a part of it!
- LazyBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1heard about this on the pcgamer podcast..... its freaking sweet.
- Draconiko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is unbelieveable. I wish something like this would happen in Wow :(
- MacSawD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Brilliant...just brilliant. It makes me want to play Eve.
- LarsG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Original article from the EvE Online message board:

http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:ng1TNWjULLsJ:www.mmodig.com/%3Fp%3D155+&hl=en&client=firefox-a - ReyBrujo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bah, there are that kind of stuff in MUD games everytime. A morgul mage sends an agent to infiltrate the Rangers of Westlands, he does the application, joins the guild, and after some time, leads the leader to an inn, traps him there, locks the door and four mages kill him.
Of course, in a MMORPG this is something hard to find, as the last thing you find there is role playing. They should just be called MMO, or MMOPP (power players). - SDNick484, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I regularly say that every form of theft and fraud in the real world will eventually be duplicated in cyberspace... Perhaps every method of stealing real money will eventually be used to steal imaginary money, too."

they got payed 16.5K, and had a blast at what they did - SneakyDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those of you with the "get a life" comments.... I would like to know what you do that makes your "lives" so interesting? Watch endless hours of mindless TV? Stuck in traffic 4 hours a day to go to a mindless job? Mentally and physically worn out by your daily routine? These thing describe most Americans yet everyone still thinks they are special.
I have my own company, am a comptetetive athlete, and I play some games online in my spare time. I can manage my time and I can manage my leisure activities. Anyone else?
Awesome story BTW. - dewey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fantastic story.
- Viper2026, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a fellow player of eve, I must say this is amazing. People are getting more and more paranoid at the more and more elaborate thefts going on. Kudos to those who pulled it off.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ah, I forgot to mention one other interesting aspect of EVE; The tech 2 BPO lottery!
The one great idea that creates a whole new class of super players. Why, just by luck, you can go from being nothing to being the most powerful player in game by being awarded an easily monopolizable technology.
Yea, EVE has a lot of neat ideas, but it is a terrible game. If they want to make the game decent, they really need to do a few things
-get rid of concord
-get rid of the T2 bpo lottery or drastically increase the number of BPOs in circulation
-remove the cost to declare and continue a war
-remove the retarded time-based leveling system, or at least make any vehicle and weapon usable and just lower the modifiers for people with low SPs in those areas
-and, for ***** sake, automate mining. Nobody, I mean nobody, likes sitting around in space to mine.
Then again, these changes are way too drastic and would probably get most of the carebears (99% of the subscribers) to leave. So I gave up on Eve. Cool in many ways, but still crap. - twinturbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1heh, amazing, now i have another reason to get a new box.
- mrjkwik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0edit button would be nice. anyway, i mean "i certainly cant get into one". anyway, on with the show
- SirBriggs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I dunno if that it is IMMENSLY SAD or AWESOME.
