- achoo5000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37I was just playing with my mom yesterday, she beat me in bowling. :(
- johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19What is up with that anyway? My wife crushes me at bowling and golf (I can still hold against her at tennis), my son beats me at boxing - it's great, but obviously my time as Pax Daddy is at an end.
- bergur1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I'm glad Nintendo went this route rather than the "my "friend" wants a PSP for christmas *lame song" blog sony did when it came to viral marketing
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Wow. Your 4th grade friends must have gotten a kick outta that comment.
- ratbastid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I introduced my mother in law to the Wii during our Christmas party today.
She went from "Oh, I'm no good at those things" to "Hey, that's kinda neat" to "Hey! This is fun!" to "Hey! I'm good at this!". The whole transformation took about three minutes.
She bowled a 196 the first time she ever touched a wiimote! - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Just played my mom in Wii Tennis.
According to her, last time she touched a video game was in 1978 in an arcade (Pacman). - D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I think you need to spend less time on Digg making stupid comments and more time not being an ass...
- blankoboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9My wife has ZERO interest in video games and whenever I play she rolls her eyes but lets me play to enjoy some 'quality' time of my own. When I brought home the Wii and showed it to her she protested saying that my PC, DS Lite and Xbox were more than enough (and that I had just finally gotten rid of my Gamecube and PS2). I muted her out long enough for me to hook it up and get it going.
I booted up Wii Sports Tennis, place the Wiimote in her hand and within 30 seconds we were having a blast. She loves it! I have even caught her playing on her own a few times...she was having a blast with the shooting game in Wii-Play (it was a launch title here in Japan) which is similar to duck hunt.
All I can say is, Thank you Nintendo! =) - modiggs1976, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9If not maybe you can get a job and get your own Wii.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"I was just playing with my mom yesterday, she beat me in bowling. :("
LOL Yeah, I was going to say... Be careful about getting people who have never even held a controller before to play the Wii. They may pwn you first time out. LOL
That's why I love the Wii. It's so satisfying for even the people who have never played a game before. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6you made her put that strap-on on?
- CanceledCzech, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Too bad you're an *****.
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Me too - Took it to our Christmas party tonight and everyone in the family LOVED it.
Also, this kind of made me laugh:
"Our core presumption is if we could get someone to put their hands on the controller, they would be hooked," said George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications.
Too bad George got all the good marketing skills and his "brother" over at Sony got none of them. - crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4to keep you wanting a wii and holding onto your cash, instead of say, buying a 360 or ps3, while the stocks of wii are being replenished.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@achoo5000 dude welcome to the club, my mother beats me all the time in bowling.
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They need to give them away on The View. If Rosie and Barbara likes it, they will rule the world.
- aschocobo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3viral marketing is not a bad approach when:
a) it's pulled off rather nicely.
b) you're not being flat out lied to by the parent company.
c) company somehow alerts you to their viral plans.
d) company doesn't view it's target market as complete imbeciles
e) all of the above
(hint: for those who can't tell, the answer is e) - Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Over Christmas we had our entire family, grandparents and all playing wii sports and having a great time. Now today me, my brothers and my parents are still playing it, we all have our miis and are getting very competitive. My mum now says shes going to by my younger brother a wii as an early bday present so they can still play it once my and my other brother have left after the hols are over.
Nintendo got it right wif this one. - thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That sounds soooo wrong....
- russo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yesterday I brought the Wii over to a Family Reunion. I kinda forced someone to play bowling, but after she got hooked, she told her husband, who told her son who told his wife. So it spread like wild fire and in the end and alot of people were playing the Wii. I like the way Nintendo is going and I think they will succeed.
- worbd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Viral marketing is not a bad thing when it's "genuine", when it's something people are spreading the word about because they like it, not because they were duped.
- rabidsquirrelOG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@LavaHot4
One TV Host, to rule them all = Oprah...
I have a similar story about my wife. She never played video games. She is basically a mild technophobe.
A mutual friend got a Wii and she played it. The fact that she even played it says a lot. She came home and called her family in Finland. She told her brother that he needed to pick one up for the kids (Niece and Nephew, 9 & 5 years old - in that order). The family all agreed that they'd split the cost. Her brother couldn't wait until Christmas, and he hooked it up after the kids had gone to bed - 1.5 weeks until Xmas day... He and his wife played for about an hour - having a blast with it. They then decided to go wake up the kids... Proceeded to play until 2AM!
I'm so glad that Nintendo is relevant again. I was one of the first kids outside of the California test markets to get a Nintendo when I was 12~13yo. My friends and I played it constantly. They have hit another homerun with this console, just as they did with the original one, and, subsequently, the DS...
Kudos, Nintendo!
I hope that my kids will one day have the same fond memories of their first 'Nintendo'... - TheTjalian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Of couse Nintendo wasn't the first, but Nintendo realised that if it was done effectively, it would work (like it has done for others).
Nintendo's done a very smart thing by targeting those who have good influence within the towns and cities they were marketing in. GG Nintendo, GG indeed :) - belfastbiker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone has mommy fantasies or was abused by his daddy.
Shame. - TopherT, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Should that be; Hey my wii is no joke! or WHERE do you want me to insert my wii?!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wasn't dissing the wii. I'm just saying that it is practically impossible to find a wii. So what is the point of advertisement?
- IzeasGT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ALL YOUR BEES ARE BELONG TO US. NEVER SEND A MAN TO DO A WOMAN'S JOB.
- ubuwalker31, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Didn't you guys hear about the Mom who was offering all sorts of favors for a Wii on craigslist? http://www.lolitron.org/2006/12/24/mom-offers-250-and-a-blowjob-for-a-wii/ (NSFW)
- sanman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Hehe, I admit I always love the "ur mom" comments. I'm surprised they haven't been immortalized along with "I for one welcome...", "In Soviet Russia...", etc. Better a cheesy insult than just cheesy cheese.
- piiyoh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow, who knew Nintendo would have such a penchant for (viral) marketing. This is probably more effective than a Chris Cunningham commercial, which are cool as it is obscure. I know word of mouth marketing is used by alot of companies for alot of products, so don't think Nintendo was the first one to come up with this. I'm just wondering if its effective.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I'm trying to convince my mom to buy me a Wii for my birthday, but she probably wont. This article may help.
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1why can't wii all get along?
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1because wiihaveaproblem.com

Isn't it a small world - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Hotty
- Blandanomics, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1"your mom plays with my wii"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2I think Nintendo needs to spend less time getting housewives to promote the Wii and more actually making the damn system!
- TriZz, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2The "mom" in the article is a MILF!!
~* insert wii joke here *~ - Madmod, on 10/12/2007, -43/+4i played with your mom too
