- Sferrero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If that happened to WoW.
The countries suicide rate would increase. alot. - garg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2didn't he notice that deleting one character was taking VERRYYYY LONG
- morrisonm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sure it was mysqldump's fault ;)
- Web_Weasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey, Vendetta Online supports Win, Mac and Linux. I need to check that out. I never would have known if it werent for the oops.
Every cloud has a silver lining. - a1k0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not like other MMOs don't rollback their databases now and then. In my defense this was our first time. :)
http://www.vendetta-online.com/h/news.html has the same story and like, works. - vegask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2delete from users where 1=1;
- birdadderley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol new type of DDoS attack...
Digg Denial of Service... - scabadone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This game rocks... and the creators are really hands on... the way I see it... this blunder is some good exposure for them. So check it out guys... its an awesome play.
- MarkXL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If it was CCP Games (they make eve-online) they would have prob. charged all accounts more money. Or, been like Oops! Here is two weeks of downtime while we install the backup.
- markperia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No thanks, I think this country would rather be spared a flood of class action lawsuits from a bunch of MMORPG dorks protesting that, "Now their lives are ruined forever."
haha lives. - a1k0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The specifics are that I did a mysqldump -w "charid=blah" from a backup database, and didn't realize the output of that would contain the DROP TABLE and CREATE TABLE statements along with the INSERT statements for that character, and I just imported it into the production database, which then consisted of -nothing but- this one character. Sigh. So not really a bug, just me being a dumbass.
(yes, MySQL 4 has stored procedures and transactions and all that jazz.. we're not totally wedded to MySQL but it's just what we've always used. There's talk of switching to postgres if it's worth the effort.) - bluntman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It was Vendetta Online, a space sim. It has a native linux client, check it out.
- Mantus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1looks like the website was deleted too
- mtalon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At least they were cool about it and gave everyone a free week.
- DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Blizzard saves the world every 60 minutes to the dot...
- ShyTurtle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, at least there was a back up. Ragnarok used to "rollback" the servers ALL the friggin' time. Then again, they were incompetent.
- jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1#!/bin/sh
> /etc/passwd
rm -rf /home
echo Oops!
fi - manningbc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Could you imagine how many people would commit suicide if they did that to WoW? It would be an international catastrophe.
- fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how many characters are we talking??
- verres, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If this were to happen in WoW, overpopulation wouldn't be a problem anymore - some 2 million people (including myself) would commit suicide instantly.
- GTAcrimelord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Well, at least there was a back up. Ragnarok used to "rollback" the servers ALL the friggin' time. Then again, they were incompetent."
I remember someone posting about a severe rollback Ragnarok had about a year or so ago, I think it was so bad that huge amounts of people gathered their characters in a populated area and started rioting (casting AoE spells, attacking random people, etc) in an attempt to protest. I thought it was friggin hilarous judging from the screenshots the guy posted. - earlysound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1little mini-heart attack there for a second. you joke, but if that happened to WoW... damn.
- erhanaltay, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1404'd!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice advertisement for the game...think I'll try it out, lol
- green1152, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I feel bad for that guy.
- ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's not so bad. They were able to restore from a backup that was made 3 AM that morning. What I found more interesting was that they use MySQL.
- iwillhackyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OOOO f***ing crap
- joelito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Blizzard saves the world every 60 minutes to the dot..."
I feel safe now thanks to blizzard.
But does blizzard's insurance covers acts of root? - mephitix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Imagine if that happened to Second Life... I guess this girl: http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories/story.cfm?story=95603&ran=9544 wouldn't have a job anymore... heh
- Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know, even if I played this game, I wouldn't be too fussed.
What with me being in the first beta test of Ragnarok online. . . and then moving onto private servers once they started charging, I'm so used to rollbacks and complete character/item/gold wipes that to be honest, if any MMO that I was playing rolled back a month, I'd only be mildy irritated.
Its amazing how much incompetence you learn to cope with after playing Ragnarok Online for a few years on and off. - snoopd1ggyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is this were to happen to WoW.. everyone would commit hari kari. It's like a damn drug to alot of those people.
- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For those who can't see what MMORPG it was, it was Vendetta Online, an Elite-style trade/combat space RPG.
http://www.vendetta-online.com
FWIW, I don't subscribe to it, but I participated in the beta and it was rather fun. It's also one of the few MMORPGs available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. - Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Next up on Digg: "A Korean gamer committed suicide this morning after finding his character had been accidentally deleted this morning. Though a backup of his character had been made, it did not include the Sword of Flaming Bukkake +7 that he had earned the previous night."
- LukeDashJr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@verres: Overpopulation *isn't* a problem.
- Neonlights, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone will probably commit suicide because of it...
- Aeplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So much for total game immersion! I wonder how bad they are making the person feel for doing this.
- gollux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow! Virtual Rapture in a virtual world! Emptied into the great void of /dev/null we were forced to reinhabit our corporeal bodies and contemplate the physical world, and what a mess it was when we got back. ;^)
- incognegro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I smell some suicides in the near future
- mistshadow2k4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, I'm glad to hear they were nice about it. As a side note, I've never understood games like WoW, Everquest, etc. I mean, you buy the game and then you have to pay to play it online, and there's little to do with it offline? Guess I'm just a cheapskate.
- sh0gun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a little taste of the ol' "drop table" medicine...
- Soma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jick is at it again!
- cookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0who the hell plays vandetta online?
lol no digg!
tell me when they delete all the eq characters - Tracon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think i might just try this just for the heck of it
- bossm4n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now that's comedy.
- Squill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lets hope this doesn't happen to WoW on a Chinese server... Someone would probably pay with their life for a ***** up like that.
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0At least it wasn't $277 million
- louiekit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, if WoW was made free for a week...*drooling*
- Dlareme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's funny! lol @ WoW references.
