- morrisonm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sure it was mysqldump's fault ;)

- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can't look at the article at work, what MMORPG was it?
- FlyingAvatar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Umm, backup much?
Seriously, how trivially easy is it to dump your database once in a while? :) - GTAcrimelord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"LOL, OMG, I want to see this happen to WoW"
No thanks, I think this country would rather be spared a flood of class action lawsuits from a bunch of MMORPG dorks protesting that, "Now their lives are ruined forever." - MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0We'll show those ebayers, racking up the goods and selling them...
- garg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2didn't he notice that deleting one character was taking VERRYYYY LONG
- bluntman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It was Vendetta Online, a space sim. It has a native linux client, check it out.
- kaplanfx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Um I like mysql as much as the next guy, but I don't hink I would ever use it as the backend for an MMORPG. Does it even have proper transactions and stored procedures yet?
- kinobe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0AAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
- Sferrero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If that happened to WoW.
The countries suicide rate would increase. alot. - ambrose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kaplanfx: yes
- markperia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No thanks, I think this country would rather be spared a flood of class action lawsuits from a bunch of MMORPG dorks protesting that, "Now their lives are ruined forever."
haha lives. - thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0lol pwned
- FlyingAvatar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ok, so I didn't RTFA.
They did have a backup. So tell me, what's the big deal then?
You lose a day of play time, they give you a week. Not news. - lazn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Vendetta Online: And there was a recent backup, only progress since the backup was lost.
- kinobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm you know it looks like a pretty fun game.
Except that the website sucks. - BigDunka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hear they have a GM opening now if anybody is interested in a job. +digg
- ShyTurtle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, at least there was a back up. Ragnarok used to "rollback" the servers ALL the friggin' time. Then again, they were incompetent.
- fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how many characters are we talking??
- GaryKing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"phpBB : Critical Error
Could not obtain lastvisit data from user table" - KelteN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"LOL, OMG, I want to see this happen to WoW"
Agreed. - earlysound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1little mini-heart attack there for a second. you joke, but if that happened to WoW... damn.
- Googled, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Link dead, mirror site http://www.mmorpgdot.com/index.php?hsaction=10077&newsid=44413.nyud.net:8090
- GTAcrimelord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Well, at least there was a back up. Ragnarok used to "rollback" the servers ALL the friggin' time. Then again, they were incompetent."
I remember someone posting about a severe rollback Ragnarok had about a year or so ago, I think it was so bad that huge amounts of people gathered their characters in a populated area and started rioting (casting AoE spells, attacking random people, etc) in an attempt to protest. I thought it was friggin hilarous judging from the screenshots the guy posted. - manningbc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Could you imagine how many people would commit suicide if they did that to WoW? It would be an international catastrophe.
- louiekit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, if WoW was made free for a week...*drooling*
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, all the RPG geeks would be turned into lemmings if this happened in WoW.
I would laugh. - GTAcrimelord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Yeah, if WoW was made free for a week...*drooling*"
Oh wow, almost 4 dollars of savings!!! Yippie-Ki-Yay... - MarkXL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If it was CCP Games (they make eve-online) they would have prob. charged all accounts more money. Or, been like Oops! Here is two weeks of downtime while we install the backup.
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0They had a backup the SAME DAY. Whoop ti fricking do, people lost a few hours of changes. Big deal.
Anyhow, story reported as "Bad link", since it links to a dead page, and the article is now only available via the comments. - Web_Weasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey, Vendetta Online supports Win, Mac and Linux. I need to check that out. I never would have known if it werent for the oops.
Every cloud has a silver lining. - scabadone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This game rocks... and the creators are really hands on... the way I see it... this blunder is some good exposure for them. So check it out guys... its an awesome play.
- DiggerT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol, i'd be pretty pissed to find all my hard effort was deleted :)
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1guspaz said: "Anyhow, story reported as "Bad link", since it links to a dead page, and the article is now only available via the comments."
Ever heard of the digg effect?
douchebag - gk128, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To the people talking about wanting this to happen in WoW.
It woundn't make a difference. Blizzard must have daily if not hourly backups. - a1k0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not like other MMOs don't rollback their databases now and then. In my defense this was our first time. :)
http://www.vendetta-online.com/h/news.html has the same story and like, works. - dognose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0reminds me of the early dot com days at an online retail. I needed to update a customer CC# in the database. Update customers set cc = 101023123123; changed all the customers #'s to that. doh!
- Lorian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lucky for the people who hadn't even played that day, free week of play, nice
- mercury81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0fortunately they were smart enough to have backups.
- godmode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha thats awesome
although i wish it had happened in WoW -
