- Jerkbot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Because all the good games are rated mature ;)
- seattle98104, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8this seems like "duh".
adults can afford more games/systems and have been playing games since the 80s.
and yeah, the better games are made FOR adults (18+). - ImBoredAtWork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@mikoslav
I don't know about you but I had WAY more free time when I was still going to school ... - snarkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5
US Population = 298 million
http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html - drw2583, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What is funny to me is how surprising it is to the younger people.
My friend and I (he's 21, I'm 22) were playing "The Outfit" last night on Xbox Live. We had a kid who was 12 on our team. He asked us how old we were. When we told him, he said "My sister says that you guys are losers".
"How old is your sister?"
"11".
This information isn't surprising; I think the-underdogs had a link that said the average gamer age was like 29.
I just really do not understand why some people (younger gamers in particular) think that it is abnormal for people in their 20's and up to be playing video games.
I had an Atari when I was 1 or 2, and an NES when I was 4 or 5...sorry, but video games are permanently engraved into who I am, and I don't see that ever changing. - bluehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm not that surprised. I'm 30 and I've been in Oblivion since Tuesday. Who needs reality when you can fireball people and creatures indiscriminately? ;)
- mikoslav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ImBoredAtWork
That's funny, because I had the complete opposite experience. I guess it depends on how much time you put into it too, but I find that once I'm done with work, I'm done, and my weekends are actually free. - g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5lol my Dad is still a kid. a 59 year old kid. who likes to play Medal of Honor.
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i was talking to my younger cousin, he had never played a 2D game. it made me sad to hear. the next generation of gamers won't have the same appreciation for what they have that the mature gamer has
- Matrix_Prime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The obvious reasoning that Adults spend more time playing games than teens, is because the current adults were the kids who grew up in the late 70's through the 80's and 90's. This is when games came out, this is when they got hooked, and this is why they continue to play them.
- Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No... its because they have money to pay for them....
- g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah we're adults now but we're pretty much the first video game generation.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think that this trend will continue to rise as people who grew up playing video games start to get older. Soon enough, we may have senators that have actually touched a game console and know what a videogame is rather than just legislate against them blindly
- Windsinger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Given the choice wouldn't you?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5200M plus 100m illegal immigrants.
- MadEnvoy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That's because teens are out orgying instead of gaming...
http://digg.com/movies/CBS_Teen_Sex_Orgy_Indecent_You_Decide - Crendel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Of course adults are gamers... any kid that owned an Intellivision, Colecovision or Atari 2600 was hooked from "hello" :)
36 and still addicted :P - cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's true. Just because we're older now, doesn't mean we want to play less games. While it's true that many people end up getting busy - with marrage, kids, and what-not - video game players will always remain videogame players.
Adults generally have more money to spend on games, especially online games with monthly fees. Adults also often have a lot of time to play games - as you get older you lose touch with a lot of people and tend to narrow down your "friend pool" to a handful of core friends. You work all week, and don't usually go out much during the week. So, games make a lot of sense. - LandStander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That IS sad. I find myself playing games on my Atari or NES and installing old PC games more than I play new ones.
- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some adults are teens.
- NGliam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd have thought it was obvious too, but whatever. Dugg.
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought this was considered common knowledge for the last few years?
- Bandito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Keep in mind that alot of today's adults grew up with the Arcade games (Pac Man, Donkey Kong, et al). Plus the home consoles Atari, Colecovision, Intellivision, Sega, Nintendo, etc. Then you had the few of us who also had the Commodore systems too.
At 35 with 3 kids, a well paying job and a beautiful home, I have an XBOX (not to mention 3 computers of my own and 2 more for the family) and still love to play. - GuineaPig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Teens are too busy having sex. This is no longer an issue when you're married.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3because most adults today are no more mature than kids.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, not only do they, but all the 1st generation gamers are now over 30. The demographics are shifting, but most clueless publishers seem to have no idea how to address this. They are still making games for babies.
I think there is a large market for games with mature content. Not porn, but something with plots and settings (and hopefully the gameplay itself) that are more than just toys with multi-million eye-candy and an MTV soundtrack.
Military-quality tactical games, detective adventures where you can't shoot your way out of every problem, strategy games that emphasize more of the strategy than your twitch-reflexes, RPGs with novel-quality plots and deep character interaction, etc. - LandStander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ive been playing City of Heroes and City of Villains since they have come out and most the people I meet on there are over the age of 30. I find it refreshing to play MMOs with adults....less immature bitching and such.
Besides being the first generation of gamers, we, as adults, play more games because our lives are filled with more stress and things to worry about so it's good that we can escape into a virtual world, it saves lives :D - markgl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the adult generation grew up with video games. So yeah, they're going to continue to play. I probably will too!
- mavranos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"As an adult I love gaming and I will never stop. Since I have a child and home to attend to I cant just go out to a bar with the boys for hours on end. Gaming is a form of entertainment that allows me to stay home and have fun, if I need to stop for a minute to do something I can simply pause the game and and get up.
I don't understand why we should stop playing games simply because we are adults. Games to me are way more fun than watching TV or movies."
Right on! This is what I try to explain to my wife (who is not buying it by the way). I think playing xbox, while it is a waste of time, is a "better" waste of time than watching some crap reality show on television.
I'd play ten hours if I had time, hell if I had time I would play 60 hours a week. I'm just a big kid with responsibilities and plan on staying that way until my poor arthritic hands can't grasp the controller anymore. - Progression, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That kid will being eating a rather large portion of humble pie when he is 22 and still gaming.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm one of those few adults out there that outgrew games. Nothing like those old school games like Montezuma's Revenge, Boulder Dash and Frogger.
- RobGamble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here's to dad. ::raises glass::
- fullcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2probably because most adults are married, and staying at home.. got nothing else better todo on a weekend, when teens are out getting piss drunk each weekend =)
- dcarpenter85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The only viable reason I can see for this trend is that adults tend to play mmo's more frequently than say GTA, or FPS games.
- Iriel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think it's a no brainer actually. The youth of the NES generation is growing up to become fine veteran gamers.
- Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Many of us adults grew up to the evolution of video gaming as we know it today. We started out with nothing more than a block bouncing across a screen (Pong) and that was enough to keep us happy. However those of us that remained die hard gamers saw blocks turn to lego block like characters, then to sprite style characters.. Then they evolved into cartoon style characters, and ultimately turned into 3d polygons! Every time the video game industry evolved, our interests evolved right along with it. However despite the current evolution of gaming, the game companies still turn out retro games, some unchanged, others remixed to the current technology. Whatever the case is, I believe the game industry is more concerned with keeping us adults hooked over trying to keep the kids hooked.
- terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sure that my parents (~50 yrs) spend more time playing more Freecell than I spend playing all other video games put together.
- nlatimer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is surprising to everyone except the gamers.
- thedaxnation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It wasn't very clear on where they started to consider a gamer an adult. Was that at 18 or 25? If it's 18, the results don't surprise me at all. The schedules of college students are much more flexible, therefore they can spend the majority of their days playing games if they so choose.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This all needs to be put into context. Are adults playing the same games as children? Are adults playing games in the same way? I play a lot of games, but I also multitask.
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I totally agree, there's no real comparison between console multiplayer and PC multiplayer. PC games just stay interesting much, much longer not to mention the lack of control.

- Wolfman~K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1teens have no money and non of us have "matured" since we were teens. ;)

http://kaseiffert.is.dreaming.org - jlawson1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That cant be right. I mean how did they get these numbers? If they just took survey, kids probably didn't even realize that they play games as long as they do. lol
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wtf.... Woman outnumber men in the 25-34 age bracket???... When did this happened? I gotta switch from counterstrike! =D
- p014k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been playing rated M games since I was 6 and watching rated R movies since I was 10. Ratings don't matter as much as people thing they do.
- msipes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Listen folks.....
It is well known that older men build up stress. One of the ways to eliminate that stress of the day is to play video games. By now, many of the 30+ crowd are the ones that started the video game revolution. It's in our blood. So when you have a hard day at work, we all like to relax with a little game of blow them all to hell. So it is understandable how adults play more then children. Kids have homework! Adults need to relax. =) - borderpatrol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess I dont fit the norm since all of my money is going to my hand build guitar.
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Adults used to say "those teens play games too much. our future is endangered."
ha ha ha. adults are hypocrats. adults should learn from teens and babies. but unfortunately, adults teach teens and babies. how unfortunae. -
