- Shiftgood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+91picto chat range = 70 feet. If a molester is that close to your child, its not the DS you should be worried about..
- superpixel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+82Rar! Me no understand tiny electronic device! Must smash! RAWR! Gotta love it when some jaded MSM hack fills the day with these putrid non-stories, huh? (way to go dsfanboy for calling them on it)
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+74Ohh, pictochat.. I thought they were going to be warning about the stylus...
- MattyLite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+52Here's a funny, and relevant, quote from the IGN DS Boards:
"There's an easy way to check if you're kid is being stalked by a DS chat predator. Look around 20 feet and see if there's anyone in a rain coat playing a DS." -HibernianFC - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45Tell him what you think

Or contact the station, http://www.myfoxmilwaukee.com/myfox/pages/InsideFox/ContactUs?pageId=5.11 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+40With tens of millions of children in the US alone, I really don't see why molesters would have to resort to obscure chat tools that is not in widespread use in order to find a target.
Fear mongering at its worst, what has this country become? - evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36Parents: If you're going to buy your child a device that you have no idea what it does, at least read the ***** instruction manual. That is all.
- ldkronos, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36Forget children. Watching Fox News makes me feel like I've been molested.
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Oh noes! A communication device... ban it! Ban cell phones too! And while we're at it, let's ban children from talking to adults! That'll show 'em.
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29If you want to find new and creative ways to molest children, watch fox news.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28The absolute best thing about this story is the story + the tagline of the site it's posted on:
"Touching. It's what we do."
*falls over laughing* - profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Who the hell USES pictochat??
- mufasa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23According to local tv stations, EVERYTHING is dangerous. Anyone remember the digg "Leet speak - a dangerous code" ?
- deucer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23They are kinda right though. I totally molested Dracula in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin and Bowser in the New Super Mario Bros. I also molested the agents in Elite Beat Agents. I can't help myself.
- MechaZain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21"Tonight at eleven, FOX investigates the dangers of communicating"
- Moosehawk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24pspornable ... I remember watching that right here in Minnesota. Worst load of crap ever.
Fox is really ignorant about tech stuff. They had a story the other day about "the internet being hacked." - Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Didn't they do this ***** with the PSP and porn?
For the love of his noodly appendage, think of the children!
Seriously. The range of the DS is about 300 feet. You can yell at that distance. - cherrick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19BREAKING NEWS: Communication tools facilitate expression of ideas between individuals.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Sorry, I thought we had a Democratic majority at the moment? Hmmm.. maybe you just meant to say controlled by fear-mongering power-hungry *****, that covers all the politicians.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Well heck while their at it why not do a story about hoddies and jackets. You know most kiddnapers go after kids they saw in a park or in public wearing a hoddie or coat that had their name on the back of it. They lure the kids away because the kid thinks that if the person knows their name it's probably ok...
- Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Fox News and its typical Tin-foil hattery.
- ldkronos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Exactly. To clarify the 70 feet thing....Pictochat only works on a direct connection between two DS. It doesn't work over an internet connection. And 70 feet is about the range on a direct connection (I'm taking your word on that number...I know it's something around that range, but not sure of the actual number)
- LatvianHedgehog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Perhaps it IS ...

http://bash.org/?458650 - fani, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16With this news, Hillary Clinton clapped gleefully and went to press expanding on the dangers of videogames.
Then she met with Joe Libermann and Jack Thompson to discuss how to quash this new threat of video gaming. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Not cool. It's colder than heck up here and I'm wearing a big, double-breasted trench coat...and I'm usually playing my DS on the Metro.
I AM NOT A MOLESTARRRRR! - ldkronos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Except (as was already pointed out) pictochat doesn't work "online" it works on a direct DS to DS connection. If the perv is that close, he can probably turn his head and see your kid.
- dalegoe, on 12/06/2008, -1/+12This is serious business. The proper response would be to shut down the city of Boston.
- JoCliMe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Hm...don't see what this has to do with "Fox News" it's a local channel...come on, does anyone actually watch local news? These stations are full of those "dangers to your soul" stories. Regardless of what network.
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11good idea. i mean. ummmmm nvm
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@Abx0r
300 feet line of site besides a mall wear else would you have that problem?in a house it is proably closer to 65 as advertised. so that means it would be some one siting in their car on the street or one of your immediate neighbors.
as far as driving down the street and having a pedo message your child they would halve to bee with in a few car lengths so if you are being closely followed by some one weaving all over the road (they are writing on a ds and driving right) they you might have to worry.also what are the chances your kid is in chat mode when driving down the road. their would be no one to talk to.
also as far as the parents not reading the manual to know they need to tell their kids not to talk to strangers is b.s. i was told not to talk to strangers long b4 the ds was around. - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Actually, I didn't know that.
- goeatsmsht, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10My son loves it. He like to go into the bathroom and text me / draw pictures whilst relieving himself. Very gross, I know, but he enjoys it!
- funnydale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9To be fair, it's sweeps month, and I'm sure that news reporters have gotten tired of tazering themselves. So the next best thing for ratings is to bitch about video games.
- Steek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You would think it would be harder to molest kids with the damn friends code system.
- UglyShirts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Fox 6 is just mad that Channel 4, the NBC affiliate here in Milwaukee, was the first station in the country to do a "To Catch a Predator"-style pedophile sting with Perverted-Justice.com years before Dateline did it nationally. The guy who came up with the idea that Dateline capitalized on, their investigative guy John Mercure, won several Emmies for doing the pieces. So this is just one more attempt to capitalize on the fear of OMG PEDOPHILES without understanding the technology involved like the rival station does.
I can't even watch the Channel 6 news here. Everyone on that station is a goofy, clueless moron. Their broadcast is consistently painful to watch for more than a few minutes at a time. - FieldAnonymouse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8And that's only if you've already exchanged friend codes.

You have got to love minnesota metro area news. I saw that PSP thing too. Ridiculous.
last month they showed how easy it was to get personal info from your computer, when they know you Windows password, and all your personal info is conviniently located in a folder on the desktop labled "credit card #s" - bryant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well, other than Metroid Prime: Hunters, that is.
- masterscot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I live in Milwaukee. Fox 6 is known for being the junk station. All of their stories are fluff with nothing really being to newsworthy. The only way they get people to turn in is to scare them with stories like this.
- Abx0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6In the video they claim they were able to get the DS to transmit pictochat messages to the other from THREE HUNDRED FEET. I don't know about you guys, but I call *****.
- goeatsmsht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Nice to look @, but I don't need instructions on how to roll ajoint.......
- visca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Total fear mongering. I love the part where the mother is shocked to see her daughter sending the news reporter their street address, WHEN HE IS DOWNSTAIRS IN THEIR LIVING ROOM. Her daughter saves the really good conversations with strangers for the Internet connection in her bedroom. -- Truly a pathetic piece of reporting.
Actually, I was pretty impressed with the distance the DS sends and receives messages when they were at the mall -- good stuff Nintendo! Wish my Bluetooth mouse that flakes out 4 feet away from the receiver worked that well. - ifire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Theoretically most areas require that residents are notified of registered sex offenders in their area. But... like a lot of things, it doesn't always work.
But to the subject, some people have commented on the parents not reading the manuals. This is quite absurd and I'll echo EvilTak in saying: read the ***** manuel if you don't understand the god damned device. - xDMCx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oh and if you're 65 feet away and asking where someone lives I don't think your smart enough to molest said person
- Equistatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to sweeps week.
- Amusing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Having 2 kids in the house with a DS I know that even in a ranch style home, and being far less apart then the distance it is supposed to work, they have connection issues when not in the same room. I'm talking like 20ft or so apart in their bedrooms.
If the pedo is talking to your kid in picto chat I would be more worried that they are outside your kids bedroom window and you kid isn't telling. - coollettuce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ adml_shake
I hope you don't know that from experience. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5it was on Dateline a long long time ago...
- coollettuce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5God forbid the Wi-Fi range is better than advertised!
