- actionscripted, on 10/12/2007, -7/+56Holy sh*t.
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36If you notice, there are no "living" objects on the screen, things that move independent of the enviroment. The minute you add creatures and vehicles (satelite doesn't count) and *****, its not gonna run that smoothly on low end hardware.
- m99stump, on 07/29/2008, -2/+31Spore's cartoonish graphics rock, not every game has to be realistic. Some of us play games to escape "realism"
This is pretty impressive though. - jmacdonagh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27"Finally, the galaxy will contain millions, if not billions, of these solar systems. All different."
This MMO will be more desolate than Ashron's Call.
Cool tech though. - neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19this game will ruin lives...
- Lane5slacker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16It is because they care about what they are doing. They aren't doing it for the money so much as they are doing it to get there names out.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Pffft... Spore can render an entire universe!!!!11
....Okay, I just watched the trailer and had time to come back in and edit this... this makes Spore look like *****. Atmosphere on that planet seemed thin, but spectacular nonetheless! - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13This is quite impressive. And they did it in their free time? Wow. Let's see how long it takes for someone to buy up their engine.
btw, the homepage for the project is http://www.fl-tw.com It seems to already be suffering a little digg effect at 30 diggs. You may have to bookmark and come back later - Durinthal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14For the record, I actually liked all of the wilderness in Asheron's Call. I love to explore places like that, and wonder how many other people ever made it to wherever you're standing. Granted, I also swam around half of Azeroth in the WoW beta for fun, so I doubt I'm in the majority.
But not in space, though. Being alone in space is just depressing. - kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17If they used this for spore, it could possible abandon the cartoonish feeling i get from seeing videos and images of the game (even though i still cant wait to get it!) this is incredable expecially when the camera flys from the planet out to the saturn-like planet, pretty cool, infact i could say way better than the videos nasa produces! haha. but honestly, with this ability to render all this, how can an MMO possible take advantage of this? but the upsaide is it was running beautifally, on good hardware thats not too uncommon.
i.e.
amd athlon 64 3500
ati radeon x800
and 1gb or ram
so you know it will look better on better hardware! lol.
oh and btw, check their site out (incase you cant read it from the video: http://www.fl-tw.com/ )
@dbxz: I agree, that the ability to simulate real-world "wear and tear" would be incredable! and imagine this with the advantage of say a physx card eh? being able to have a lot of object on screen, and add to the already incredable real-ism. - redneckblues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I think it would be really cool to be like a team of 4-6 Special Operations and silently infiltrate an enemy base on the planet by free falling from space. But that's just me.
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I actually know this guy, he frequents the gamedev.net forums.
His blog: http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/mod/journal/journal.asp?jn=263350
Has some interesting details and screenshots. - TehSuper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9How come these amazing engines are always made by just a few guys? :/
- LaslarsFermion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Perfect for Elite 4 :D
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This game will never be completed. Anyone willing to make a bet?
- tcsajax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Amazing! I will be following this for sure!
Maybe this could give a jump to the dying Space Sim genre. - nismoR34, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9that's no moon...
- jamsea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8:P yeah but each planent on spore is like 1/10000000000th the size of one of these planets.
Holy crap, its crazy what people can do with computers eh? - Sarica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7AMD Athlon 64 3500
1GB ram
ATI radeon x800
Even more impresive as that isn't toppest of the line. - Atreiu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yea really. I can only imagine it gittin really borin if u cant find anybody for a couple weeks =P
- jkostantos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6models in perspective view so that dimensions can be compared

-from devs blog - therernospoons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I like the music, where is it from?
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6can i MOVE planets? THat'd be the best thing ever. Having everyone rig up a crew and tow a moon as a weapon
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Link to the Youtube video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp8WOCuR_pQ - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Derek Smart is going to be pissed.
And good luck adding enough content to fill up even 10% of one of those planets. - bysin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Who finds this impressive? Does no one else see whats going on? Thats just a randomly generated bump map terrain demo, with some solar glare effects. They didnt zoom in all the way, and probably for that reason. There was nothing impressive going on here, old old old technology.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Developers... developers... developers...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Elite 4, Privateer 3, if this engine works it could jump start the space trading genre again.
- streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Elite!
Now that would be a cool MMO. - kman2k1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Anyone else notice the Saturn-like-planet doesn't cast a shadow on it's rings relative to its light source?
- iruel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6its a space station.
turn the ship around.
you know old man i think your right.
chewie lock in the auxillery power, chewie lock in the auxillery power
why are we still moving towards it!
were caught in a tractor beam, their pulling us in
ok i think that is enough....(this is just off the top of my head havn't watched the movie in at least a year. i guess its another thing on my summer to do list) - Jorenm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't care if you render an entire galaxy, procedurally generated content is only good to fill in the areas between artist-created content. Look at oblivion, the forests were quite effective at creating a living world in which dungeons and cities are situated, but even with all those artist-made dungeons breaking up the procedurally generated landscape, the game got repetitive quickly.
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Would be nice if there was. I mean, I can imagine pointing the remote to a planet, pressing a button, and auto-piloting there as I pass by stars, and rocks, and clouds, and--oh shi, evil enemy spaceplane thingy on my SIX?!?
- Cheeseness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"a 1996 dungeon crawler"
Like Daggerfall? Funny that.
http://www.elderscrolls.com/tenth_anniv/tenth_anniv.htm
Personally, I enjoy wandering through the forests. The idea of taking a procedurally generated environment and hiding pieces of crafted content for people to find and interact with (which would've been a bit more rewarding without every nearby location instantly popping up on your compass) is a very cool one, and certainly the best option as far as MMOs go (al-la Will Wright's 'future of game content' talk at GDC 05).
It reduces the work that content developers do. The idea is that you algorithmically generate the *canvas* onto which you paint your game. - Aidenag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sweet thier website says the game should be playable in 1-2 years, and thats as they put it, the soonest possibility....
So in otherwords this is one of those idea''s that by the time its implemented the game is no longer up to date, and others have cought up and in most cases outdone it... - Sarica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think their music is composed by someone on the project, didn't catch the name in the credits though.
Edit: Music is by Oskar Tornros. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3
Elite!
Now that would be a cool MMO.
It sounds like Eve Online is exactly what you were looking for:
http://www.eve-online.com/ - iruel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you're a thinker mack
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't know what Oblivion you played but the dungeons were one of the two worst aspects of the game IMO. The cities had flavor because they were artistically done by human programmers, the landscape could have had a little more variety, but the dungeons were bland and repetitive, or maybe the item quests just made it feel that way... The insides of the dungeons felt like they came out of some dungeon crawler of 1996.
The 2nd aspect that ruined the game was lack of distinct and likable NPCs to make them truly memorable. Even multiplayer a game this scale will feel really empty. - redneckblues, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4My planet could beat up your planet.
Also, from the Overview:
"Recently, a strange disease has appeared and spread like wildfire, keeping women from becoming pregnant."
Where can I get some? - Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whilst it was very impressive, I got the feeling that the scale of things was wrong. For instance it takes very little time to get from space, seeing the curve of the planet, to on top of a mountain. Admittedly, this could be a very, very small planet.....
- theoallardyce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Er how is this different to say Microsoft Flight Simulator or even the various space simulators that are around that simulate entire planets. Hell how about Elite?
What they've done is some pretty amazing atmospheric effects and some terrain generating, its not that ground breaking. We have games now that can support big maps, once you can support a big map that needs to be dynamically loaded as you walk around you can potentially have any size map limited only by the size of your hard-drive. GTA 4 for example had some dynamic terrain generation to put in some of the shrubs and cactus plants - fractal terrain generation is obviously the way forward. The issue right now is actually getting a decent 3D model of earth together with all the buildings. - vendetta07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thats a cool idea : ) paint a good picture in the mind. also cryo-sleep/suspended animation anyone??
- blagoaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This has actually struck me with something. The things I remember that apply to this are old-- height-field based helicopter and flight sims, fractal playsets you could download and play with in DOS... Where are those things now? Over the past few years, everything has trended toward content that requires more data, which DVD's and high bandwidth have made available. I can't think of where the incoming generation would have become familiar with these things. Oblivion and Spore will help bring these concepts back to popularity.
- blagoaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had another few looks at the video. I'll take back what I said about the scale. I think the scale's probably mostly accurate, but the demo suffers from a bit of the "puppet box" effect (is that what it's called?) that plagues lots of 3D graphics. Without proper reference points and without getting all the lighting perfect, somehow we perceive things as being small (afterall, it could be any size -- who is to say how large all that stuff is). With a more realistic atmosphere and some more detail on the surface, I think the scale would be fine.
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes they do.
We are a small team and we have a relatively successful indie MMORPG. - bysin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I've watched the whole demo, and from what I've seen, its nothing. A few lines of code max. If their engine was capable of more, they would have shown that in the demo.
- redneckblues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Then release it and watch it plow into another planent, kind of like that Japanese apocalypse video that was on here a while ago.
- iruel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2like a super awsome star wars ish game!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It was mostly the hack and slashers that just wanted to level that left muds behind for WOW.
Not a loss in the opinion of many mudders. -
