- whiteknives, on 08/18/2008, -11/+87I see two ways Microsoft can gain back lost ground with the 360.
1.) Swallow their pride and release a Blu-ray drive.
2.) Offer affordable hard drive upgrades and allow XBL subscribers to play these larger games (Blu-ray is what, 50gb?) straight from download to HDD.
P.S. Allowing gameplay from external storage devices would be nice too. - damack, on 08/18/2008, -14/+84I own a 360 and I have to say some of the points bought up in this article make sense
If Microsoft could make three improvements with the 360 I would be very greatful:
1: Fix the RRoD problems faster.
I've had to send in my console and it takes over a month to get it back, if they can't get rid of the RRoD at least speed up recovery!
2: Offer free Live.
I don't understand why downloading demos and playing against friends would require a Gold account.
3: Get rid of the propietary hard drives.
180 dollars for 120GB of storage is ridiculous you can play a SATA converter into the PS3 and connect it to a 1 terabte hard drive if you want. Microsoft need to stop being so damn greedy.
Aside from that an RRoD fix would be nice I've sent mine in three times already but it looks like an RRoD fix is a long time off and I wouldn't mind a blu-ray drive instead of a DVD drive, it spins too fast and makes a hell of a lot of noise. - ZombieSociety, on 08/18/2008, -13/+70They could also make the 360 not constantly die.
- jp33miller, on 08/18/2008, -27/+81I feel retarded...it didn't even dawn on me how many freaking disks FFXIII will be on the 360 *shakes head*
- santasing, on 08/18/2008, -33/+86I will just sit back and enjoy the comments from the 360 fans this time around.
It was just last year when you would be buried down in heaps just for saying something positive for the PS3. Sony took all the heat, and proved themselves to be a worty competitor. I can see the PS3 only getting better with time.
SOCOM, R2, Ratchet, Little Big Planet, Valkyrie in the next 3 months....way to go Sony. - flashpointbob, on 08/18/2008, -32/+81I wasn't going to comment on this story at first, but lets be serious, how many people already have 360s? I have bought 2, I bought an Elite because I liked the color and the bigger HDD was something I really needed. However, when my Elite broke, I bought a PS3, sure I like the system and everything, but the controller and online service are sub-par.
I believe that once 360 fully irons out these RRoD issues, that they will start selling systems again, and a price drop in the near future sure won't hurt things either. Let us not forget that the economy is in the ***** and that the view of Americans (and thus American products) around the world is something less than stellar.
Its not that the PS3 is a better system, but the fact that it doubles as a blu-ray player, and the fact that RRoD issues are still not completely over is the reason that the PS3 is gaining, for now. - ShugNinx21, on 08/18/2008, -11/+55I would like to know when having multiple disks became such an extensively massive burden?
Is having only 1 disk nice? You bet it is.
Is having to swap out a disk every 10 hours of gameplay completely debilitating to the game experience? Not a chance. - Vesper73, on 08/18/2008, -20/+62Isn't it amazing how easy it is to determine which side of an issue to get on in order to garner yourself a digg, or conversely, a bury! It's unbelievable! Watch this:
I still think the Xbox360 has better titles than the PS3, despite it's recent successes! - ferrariman60, on 08/18/2008, -6/+47Hmm, an interesting article, but I think he overplays some of the PS3's advantages and underplays some of the 360's advantages. This comment: "There is also the fact that Sony has the Blu-ray drive, provides strong multimedia functions on its system in general" in particular struck a nerve with me, as I use my 360 for video/music streaming on a nightly basis, especially with the olympic thing. Sure, the PS3 can do things like this too, but suggesting the xbox can't is just ignorant. Oh, and saying Home "could be the silver bullet that finally gives Sony the edge in online play" must be a joke. I turn on my console to play games online, not play second life.
- spectecjr, on 08/18/2008, -16/+53What amazes me is that in this day and age, they're still using pre-rendered cutscenes in FFXIII.
- ShugNinx21, on 08/18/2008, -7/+41I would imagine losing or damaging Disc1 out of 1 would be infuriating as hell as well.
Take care of your *****. - kinseyincanada, on 08/18/2008, -1/+33oh christ another fanboy war, cant we just all enjoy the great games that are out right now, and coming up? we have amazing titles like Orange Box, Bioshock, COD4, SKATE, Rock Band, Guitar Hero, Halo 3, MGS4, and coming up Little Big Planet, Fable 2, Gears 2, God of War 3, ***** there are a ton of good titles for both systems, just ***** enjoy them
- WaSSaBi, on 08/18/2008, -12/+43I don't know... 50 bucks for you might be nothing, but for some people, thats a lot of money... especially when you have another console that has similar functionality at no cost...
I have a 360 and a PS3 (my room mate bought the 360) - They're both great consoles, however, besides Halo, we really don't have anything else to play on the 360. Me and my room mates Live Subscription ended last month and really, with my Halo 3 addiction over, I'm reluctant to resubscribe. I ended up getting COD4, GTA4 and Civilization Revolution on the PS3 to avoid having to reactivate my live subscription
I guess i'll wait for GOW2 before i fire up that xbox live subscription....
by the way, this article, though a little biased, does have some valid points - SniperGX1, on 08/18/2008, -9/+39Xbox 360s sold = 19 million worldwide, Playstation 2s sold = 150 million worldwide. If Microsoft has capped out already they are in very deep *****.
- Wootstapler, on 08/18/2008, -36/+64Hmmm, how come 360 sales are faltering? Because the majority of console gamers already have a 360.
- jarinudom, on 08/18/2008, -7/+35Here is what Sony will have to do to beat the 360:
COME OUT WITH SOME DECENT GAMES - theuncommonman, on 08/18/2008, -13/+38A crumbling tower? They've chipped off a few bricks, but I think this guy is getting a little ahead of himself. Sure, the PS3 has had a nice sale surge lately because of the success of Blu-Ray and MGS4, but let's see what happens after the holidays.
The recent price drop for 360s, news of an upcoming RRoD-free model, and promising exclusives like Tales of Vesparia, Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Braid (already released), Portal expansion pack, Too Human, Last remnant (timed), Castle Crashers, Infinite Undiscovery, Halo Wars, and Left 4 Dead are all on the horizon for 360 before the end of the year. - TommyHigh, on 08/18/2008, -12/+36Pre-rendered FTW!!
If there is enough disk space... Why not? I know I like better graphics? Do you? - dunezone, on 08/18/2008, -18/+41The PS3 is taking the sales cause the industry is in the summer slump. It can now sell the system as a Blu-Ray player also. Come fall it will probably go back to the 360, come spring it will go back to the PS3, the cosmic ballet goes on.
- damack, on 08/18/2008, -4/+25You have to wait a while after the demos come out.
I'm not certain how long but it's a week plus at least, I couldn't download the Too Human demo for a week, after that I gave up.
I don't understand why you need to pay to download demos the same time as everybody else after all the demo is like an ad for the game by forcing you to pay for a gold account so you can download the demo at the same time as the others is counter productive IMO. - Ajajadude, on 08/18/2008, -5/+24They're both gaming consoles and that's about it. They're not practically the same. Dell and Gateway computers are practically the same since I can do the same exact thing and run the same exact software on each of them. Can't do that with the 360 and PS3.
- Dino451, on 08/18/2008, -5/+23Holy one sidedness Batman!
- Tanze, on 08/18/2008, -16/+33you mentioned the annoyance of the ps3 controller. i completely agree! they need to move the left analog stick up to where the d-pad (ish) buttons are. having big hands, this is infuriating!
- inactive, on 08/18/2008, -14/+31Oh, I get it now. Digg is full of 12-year-olds.
- RyIvan, on 08/18/2008, -1/+18Isn't that the game where the developer keeps trying to pay out forum users and defends it like its his own child? The one people reference it to "The Xbox360's Haze-like dud of the year"?
- craighoxton, on 08/18/2008, -5/+22And English language tech support that isn't in a third world country?
- thecheatah, on 08/18/2008, -12/+28That's interesting. Do you only have trouble with the left joystick, or do you want to move both joysticks up. I dont understand why you would only want one joystick to move up. Unless your hands are not normal.
Logically speaking those are the only two choices. Your hands are exactly mirrored. So if you have trouble with one hand you should have trouble with the other as well. So my only conclusion is that you guys are "fanboys" or that your hands are disfigured.
Either way I am going to get dugg down. - FireStrife, on 08/18/2008, -2/+16If you ever used a 360 controller you would understand what Tanze is trying to say.
I have both systems and I prefer the 360 controller because the joystick and button placement is superb. While the playstation one is tried and true, ergonomically i feel the 360 controller is amazing. - Frejesal, on 08/18/2008, -1/+15Dugg, because I'm pretty sure you're being sarcastic. If not, still hilarious.
- evozero, on 08/18/2008, -7/+20hit the weak point for massive damage
- aegis9975, on 08/18/2008, -3/+16I've owned both consoles since their respective launch. For me, I've recently been purchasing PS3 games over 360 for multiplatform games. Given the choice, I've always bought 360 version until very recently, what made me change over is that many of my casual gamer friends don't have XBL Gold and more and more of my friends play on the PS3 (most bought the machine just for the Blu-ray). At first, 360 games were superior versions compared the PS3, now both are the same, and I've had several RROD problems with the 360, and thinking about a long-term investment of the game purchase (being able to play past the three-year warranty of my console) the PS3 is starting to get my multiplatform dollar.
- NomortaL1, on 08/18/2008, -1/+14no! someone must fall!
- RyIvan, on 08/18/2008, -3/+16Your getting dugg down because the only thing they share is being a games console. The playstation 1 and Nintendo 64 weren't the same thing were they? Different technologies and different game line ups with different directions.
- T440, on 08/18/2008, -1/+13Would like to point out a few things:
1. The number of 360s sold in Japan during this period, although still quite a bit less than Wii, was 250% more than the amount of PS3s that were sold during that same period.
2. This spike increase in sales is mostly the result of the release of Tales of Vesperia.
I don't think Sony has much to worry about with competition against the 360 in Japan (focusing on combating the Wii has got to be where their focus is at), but it's fairly obvious what happens when they release games that Japanese gamers actually want to play. If they can continue to get more exclusive support from Japanese developers then they could finally be a worthy competitor in Japan. - Ajajadude, on 08/18/2008, -10/+22The funny thing is, Microsoft most likely has already ironed out the RRoD yet it's still an issue for the public. They have done absolutely nothing to make people think of the 360 as a stable console.
And another issue you just highlighted is HDD size. You bought another new 360 in part because you needed a bigger HDD? How much did that cost you in comparison to just buying a larger laptop HDD? That's one of the reasons why I sold my 360 and stuck with the PS3: even at $600, my PS3 was cheaper than what my 360 ($400) would have been once I upgraded everything to be on par with what I had in my PS3. - faizal5k, on 08/18/2008, -1/+12Ummm...You do know that the CELL CPU is also made by IBM (also with Sony and Toshiba). The GPU is made from nVidia which is also an American company. If PS3 sucks in hardware, how come the failure rate is below 2% while 360's failure rate is above 20% and launch 360s were above even 30%.
I'm not trying to sound like a fanboy, but you sound so much of a douchebag that I had to make a comment.
and yea...like Frejesal said, if you're being sarcastic, then I'll the douchebag comment back. - indiancompanion, on 08/18/2008, -3/+14A little CG wouldn't kill them if it makes it look better
- volacide, on 08/18/2008, -0/+11Those cutscenes are in engine though Sathias, and since they use in-game assets, no matter how long the cutscenes in MGS are they're not adding any extra data other than sound data (and other obvious necessities) to the disc. In Final Fantasy's case we're talking massive high definition prerendered videos, and lots of 'em.
- VinnieDaMac, on 08/18/2008, -19/+30Wow, how did this get on the front page seriously.......? Obvious fanboy material.
- RyIvan, on 08/18/2008, -7/+18Obviously you haven't seen the Nintendo DS charts for Japan?
- SniperGX1, on 08/18/2008, -0/+11Old, that was last year, they are 13 now
- Dymphna, on 08/18/2008, -9/+20Steam brings better than Live for free.
The Playstation Network has EVERYTHING I expect for online gaming, and also does so for free. Same goes for battle.net
Live charges for extra features that are not integral to the online experience, in an age when everyone is doing better for free. That's a major downfall for a gaming system. Especially as most of the games are available elsewhere as well (PC or Playstation)
A lot of it probably depends on where your interests in exclusives lies, but I have no interest on a generic sci-fi FPS game, thank you. - dandonia, on 08/18/2008, -9/+19I'm digging you down because they are very different and it's the differences that make one better than the other. Here are some of the things I can do on the PS3 that I can't do on the 360.
Watch Bluray Movies/TV Shows:
------------------------------------------------
What are people going to do with your 360 when you get the next XBOX and it has backwards compatibility for their current games? The PS3 will be used as a Bluray player in another room, much like my PS2 and XBOX were used as DVD players in other rooms. And forget in 2-3 years time, what about now. I went out and bought a 42" HDTV for my 360 when it first came out, I want to watch movies in HD and the only way for me to do that is via Bluray (I'm in the UK and our HD providers SKY charge drastic prices and my ISP limit is 40GB per month which means downloading HD Movies is an expensive waste of bandwidth)
Play CD+G Files
--------------------------
Yes the PS3 can easily be turned into a karaoke player using Linux. This is great for parties as my family/friends are crazy mad on bad singing. My aunty bought a PS3 specifically for this and Bluray, while my cousin is loving the games.
Surf The Net
-------------------------
While I am typing this on my laptop, I could just as easily have been typing it on the PS3 and that rocks. What if my laptop breaks or needs to go back to the shop for a week. No worries, the PS3 lets me use the internet.
Office Work
-------------------------
My cousin approached me the other week about getting his son a PC for school work. I asked him what he was going to do on it and he said "just basic word processing, internet access, maybe listen to music and if possible play a few games". The best solution all round PS3. Not only is it £50 cheaper than the cheapest Dell PC but it does everything he wanted it too and a lot more.
Get with it people, games consoles are not just game consoles anymore. When you compare the iPhone to the Nokia 3210, sure they both call and text people, but I think we can all agree the iPhone is the better purchase because it can do a whole lot more than that.
Then you have all the other better features on the PS3 like wireless networking, remote play with the PSP, motion controls, better storage options, far greater codec support (which is really important to me), ability to strip music from USB devices, ability to store data on USB HDD's like game saves, the ability to put DLC on 5 different machines, the ability to store movies on your PS3 hdd from an external hdd, no limit on file size for DLC, 50GB and rising disc space for games and free online gaming. These are just the main things that the PS3 does better you can also look into the smaller details like no power brick, extremely quiet (maybe that should be in the main category), drastically smaller failure rate (that too), standard cables, HDMI (sure the 360 has it now, but that doesn't help my 360 does it), PSN games like Ratch and Clank: Quest for Booty, GT5P and Burnout Paradise, PSN uses real currency so you know exactly how much you are spending and you don't have to buy extra (I hate buying a game for 800MS points but you have to buy 1000 so you are left with 200), more people online look at Resistance 2's online then think how big MAG is going to be. PS3's exclusives are exclusives where as the 360's make their way to the PC.
Summery
-------------------------------
I'm not saying the 360 doesn't do anything better but I can't think of any major feature (here in the UK at least) that it does better. It certainly doesn't have anything as big as Bluray and to say that the two machines are "the same damn thing" is just ridiculas. - RyIvan, on 08/18/2008, -5/+15They are? Where is the source? I thought they may have taken the MGS4 route, man i love the cutscenes in that.
- davidjunit, on 08/18/2008, -1/+11They should be able to render some fairly decent-looking real-time cut scenes with the hardware now days. Using pre-rendered movies on today's consoles is just laziness in my opinion. Use that extra storage space for real content.
- ZombieSociety, on 08/18/2008, -7/+16You don't need Gold to download demos.
- Wootstapler, on 08/18/2008, -2/+11My hair is a bird, your argument is invalid.
Goodbye. - IndigoMoss, on 08/18/2008, -1/+10The problem with the Playstation 3 controller is the way that you kind of have to put your thumb towards the middle of the controller. I've always hated the way their thumb sticks have been positioned, but they're too ubiquitous for Sony to change it.
The problem with the Xbox 360 controller is the D-pad. It's absolutely horrible. Try throwing a dragon punch on Street Fighter 2 when someone is jumping towards you. There's a good chance that you'll either jump into their punch/kick or throw out a Hadoken. It's a pain in the ass playing Soul Calibur 4 with it too.
The best controller would be a controller that has the Xbox 360 shape and stick with a Nintendo Gamecube style pad and Playstation 3 style triggers, they could also throw in a Genesis start/select for good measure. - indiancompanion, on 08/18/2008, -5/+14ps3 is doing well comparatively, its a little over 14 million putting it at about 5 million below the 360 in half the time in the market
- WhereAmI, on 08/18/2008, -7/+15Put in a HDDVD drive? Thats the dumbest ***** thing ever.
"who cares if it's dead, it still holds a damn lot of data."
I care if its dead, because its dead. Also I'm sure whiteknives wants the Blu-Ray drive for something other than game storage, like movies. -

What is Digg?
