Next time, try using the ***** Google. While I wouldn't consider all of these to be the type of RPG I would play, here's a list of all of the ones planned so far. In my opinion, people that like Role Playing games had better just pony up the money for a PS3 of 360 (I'm looking at quality of games, not quantity). - contradictator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Not to mention you'll be able to PLAY all the great RPGs for the SNES (and the NES, and N64) to hold you over.
- geosmith, on 10/12/2007, -12/+31There isn't a lack of RPG's for Nintendo Wii. Games they forgot to include are Legend of River King, Sword of Legendia and many others from Namco to Koei and From Soft. So no it's not lacking from RPG's. Also Square plans to bring a Mana game.
- Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Legend of River King? A fishing RPG isn't what people have in mind for an epic or in-depth RPG. Sword of Legendia is so far away it doesn't even have screenshots or previews yet. Dragon Quest Swords is an action game.
RPGs aren't very accessible to Nintendo's target audience, the "casual gamer", anyway. So I don't see what the big deal is. - interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Not for the Japanese market. For Japanese players, there are only RPGs (with the occasional dancing and drum beating games)
- Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20There were RPGs on the N64?
...You just reminded me that Quest 64 exists. I hate you now. - Germs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I would love a Wii sequel to the Golden Sun RPGs that were on the GBA. Those two games were a couple of the best games that I've ever played on a portable or home console system.
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Yes drunkjack, I will Digg you down, and no, it isn't the truth. Anyone who calls people dumb for liking a certain type of game deserves the -Diggs. Does it make sense to have a turn-based game? Well, let's see, do people enjoy said games? Do they turn a profit? Yes? Then it makes sense. I have yet to play any fast-paced game that I found to be as enjoyable or as memorable as ChronoTrigger, turn-based gameplay and all. If they're not your cup of tea, fine, you're entitled to your personal tastes. But have the decency to respect other people's preferences as well.
- akashra, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Mana game!? Are you talking as in the Secret of Mana/Seinken Densetsu games? YAY!
Also, Fire Emblem definately looks worthwhile, and before investigating it I'd never even heard of the other 8(ish) games in the series. - LunarOcean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Indeed, the Japanese market is very different.
Dragon Quest games (the main series) have been banned from being released on schooldays. I forget which game it was, but enough people school (I've also heard that tons skipped work as well) on the day that one of the DQs came out, and since then they can only be released on the weekends.
According to wikipedia, it was Dragon Quest III (great game)
"Dragon Warrior III has the distinction of being the very game that caused in 1988 the Japanese government to outlaw further releases of Dragon Quest games on school days, a law still in effect today."
So yeah, RPGs are a big selling point there, no doubt. - MechaFenris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8drunkjack:
"truth" attached to one's opinion does not make it anymore full of "truthiness" than say my assertion that red-assed monkeys are behind the recent pricing model for the PS3. It's the truth! :P
Seriously though, each person plays differently and enjoys different things. I love to play chess and Civilization. That being said, turn-based battles are more fun to me than frantically mashing buttons until something dies. Zelda is merely a turn-based RPG without the turn-based battles. Think about it. Every item you list as the benefits of Zelda, you get with nearly all games categorized as RPGs (and those benefits have existed LONG before Zelda. I played Ultima on an Atari 800, which didn't really have turn-based battles, either, but was dang fun and had the pacing of a turn-based game....) Incidentally, my favorite of the Ultima series (Ultima III) had what could be described as a "timed turn-based" battle system. You couldn't just sit there and think about what attack you wished to mount, because the game would "pass" your character's turn to the next, and if you let yourself "pass" through all 4 characters, the enemy would spend its round moving and hitting you while you cursed the screen.... heh. The simultaneous igo-yougo systems of certain console RPGs are an extension of this idea (done to varying degrees of success.)
Being a person that grew up on turn-based pen and paper games (before the ubiquitous computer gaming sucked me in...) I can say that I really like turn-based RPGs and Strategy RPGs. Simply because there's a console that can push 10000 gigapixels per nanosecond doesn't mean we should abandon what is fun for a twitch reaction sort of experience. "thinking fast" is fine for some games, but I don't care for it to be the ONLY way to play games. You're advocating eliminating games you don't particularly like, which is rather silly. The fact that you don't like them isn't silly... the fact that you find it incomprehensible that others would like it is what truly is silly in your argument. ;) - terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8What makes it an RPG? The "get and equip gear" aspect, or the fantasy setting?
I would say that a CRPG involves some sort of stat progression.
Zelda is adventure. Metroid Prime is First Person Adventure. It's not like Lucasarts or Sierra is using the "adventure" genre anymore. - pokemogu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8What's wrong with games for dumb-asses like me? Not everyone have enough reflexes to shoot-up immediately. That's just your opinion.
- Sabin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Did the lack of RPGs at the PS2 launch worry anyone? Hell, did the lack of anything other than SSX at the PS2 launch worry anyone?
RPGs take years to develop and you are usually lucky to see more than a handful in the first year of a systems lifespan. Check the release dates on all the great RPGs for the SNES, PS1 and PS2 and then look at the release date of the actual system. - LunarOcean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What makes you think Video Games all have to be in real time? Why do they all have to be super fast? Because they have the power to be? I guess all games that aren't in real time are stupid, you know, like chess. Everyone who plays that must be a fool.
I don't hear people complaining about chess because it's turn based. It was designed to be that way, and perhaps if you went and played a turn based game without such a negative preconnotation because it wasn't designed to be super active, you'd find that the system works, is enjoyable, has its own strengths, its own flaws, and all that kind of stuff.
I love Zelda, but I hope RPGs don't all go that way. I like having a long, engrossing storyline in my games, a key note for many people who enjoy RPGs that you left out. Their storylines are generally longer and deeper than most other games.
You are not the definer of what games should be. - grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Super Paper Mario is a Jump'n Run, not an RPG like the other PaperMarios.
- Sk8SkaNJ, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Most RPG's take years to develop, so I wouldn't imagine seeing any announced ones yet. The only ones on X360/PS3 is Oblivion which was started on PC. Even Microsoft's own Fable is still far away from being released and they've had a head start when compared to devs getting the wii kits.
- DrToddMD, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Everyone knows that RPGs (at least the decent ones) NEVER come out within 6 months of launch. This is the exact reason why the Virtual Console is such a great idea....a particular game you want isnt coming out yet? No worries! You have the OLD great nostalgia titles to hold you over.
Breath of Fire FTW - jonnyq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Zelda is not an RPG. Zelda is an adventure game like Metroid.
I don't have high hopes for the RPG scene on Wii. Any real RPGs for the system will be welcome, but it's not the deal breaker for me.
I think RPGs could be much more fun, interesting, and playable on the DS, so I hope that's the direction they take with it. Portable, good graphics, and a touchscreen well suits an RPG. - jonnyq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicals: Crystal Bearers, Fire Emblem Wii, Harvest Moon, Pokémon Battle Revolution, Super Paper Mario, Sword of Legendia, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess"
someone above said Dragon Quest Swords is not an RPG bug an action game. Like I said, Zelda isn't an RPG; it's an adventure game. Calling Harvest Moon an RPG in the traditional sense is a stretch. I don't think Pokemon Battle is supposed to be an RPG, unless is it has some weak RPG-style quest as an afterthought to the battle system. - RMDTech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That I do have to say is incorrect. There are still a ton of PC Adventure games coming out all the time. Just because Lucasarts or Sierra doesn't make them or as many doesn't mean they don't exist. In fact the Wii might make a resurgence of these types of adventure games (at least I hope it does). But even then I would agree hat even though Zelda does have RPG elements it is still considered more a Console Adventure game.
- staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Zelda is and always was an Epic adventure. You can put Shadow of the colossus in the same catagory.
- blofeld9999, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Since when were RPGs the main system seller? When I think PS2 exclusives I think GTA (initially), Metal Gear Solid, Devil May Cry, etc. Sure, FFX may have moved some boxes - but as many as GTA? I doubt it.
Or the Xbox for that matter, no doubt KOTOR was a huge hit. But I don't think it had the same impact on Xbox sales that Halo did.
Mind you the Japanese market could be another story. But I think they'll manage to like Zelda. :-) - CROWMST311, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11believe it or not, rpg's are a niche market
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5First, we get an adventure game (aka Zelda). It should give time to 3rd parties to dish out a good RPG. Yes, RPGs are a must especially in Japan, but let's not forget one thing: Wii's biggest sellpoint is that it's different. I want a RPG myself, but it's got to be different, too, or else... you know -- I'll play Red Steel instead, or even Trauma Center... otherwise why did I buy the Wii again ?
So I absolutely don't doubt 3rd parties on this subject, but I'd rather see them take their sweet time and cook something that's worth the expense. Be it moving the remote around for spells, pointing at enemies, or "timed" moves with the remote to block/attack (sort of like in Mario RPG, where you had to it [A] at the right moment), I want a RPG, but I want something new as well. For this reason, I am not concerned about the availabillity at launch -- at all. - wtfomg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just for clarification, the new "Super Paper Mario" game is a platformer in that style, not another RPG.
- avolant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3should a question mark in a title be a signal of sensationalism?
you decide... - LunarOcean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They're definitely still a huge cornerstone in Japan.
Personally, as games have improved, I've seen improvements in all the areas you mentioned for RPGs. Sure, other games may have the exploration and storyline, but as far as I'm concerned, and as far as I've gathered from playing, RPGs still generally have better storylines, more character depth, longer stories, bigger worlds, and more customization.
You can find good storylines in many games today, but finding a good storyline that's the length of a novel, purely script wise? I don't see that in many other games
Don't forget Skies of Arcadia - indeed, it's a port, but it's a great game nonetheless. - LunarOcean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have to agree. I was sad that a third never came out after the save data of the second.
Golden Sun really showed the power of the GBA, both graphically and musically. For a portable RPG, it had one of the best stories I've seen, and that's in relation to most console RPGs as well.
Ivan is awesome. - apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2if assuming a "role" and experience points were the only defining traits of an rpg, castlevania should have been considered an rpg since symphony of the night. i distinctly remember experience points, an inventory, and levelling up.
the true definition of an rpg has been debated for years now. IMHO, i personally define a rpg as:
- a game where the player assumes a character identity throughout the duration of the story.
- ability to track and augment your character statistics via inventory.
- must advance in experience or level himself in order to progress through battle.
- statistically you can not just beat any enemy too high above your level if you have good reflexes.
- takes into account some form of randomness or strategy to the combat system. each attack does not inflict the same amount of damage each time, and the amount of damage dealt is dependent upon the enemies equipment and stats.
its a basic idea, but from here you branch off into other elements such as action-rpgs or strategy-rpgs, etc...
IMHO, i consider zelda games action or adventure rpg, because your ability to avoid attacks and deal damage is based upon your ability to physically dodge and time attacks via the controller, and it is equally as important as your personal statistics. in fact, you can avoid picking up most heart containers and still win with minimal hp. your equipment dictates your strength. however in traditional rpgs, your hp guage is usually directly tied to your performance. unless you avoid all battle altogether, you have no choice but to get stronger over the course of the game. - iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2c'mon guys... Ogre Battle 64!
- SqueakyWheel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2RPG on Wii could really give a new meaning to the grind.
- stylerm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4yeah. I used to be in to them, but now the idea of investing time into a game makes it feel like work. Some people like the reward, I do not anymore.
It is ok to modify your opinions based on my pearls of wisdom. - theratdotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wait, isnt zelda a launch title and considered an action rpg? i understand the argument though...the gamecube never had one good rpg. nope, none. katos baten, was close, but now...wasnt good. hopefully, theres some 3rd paty working on one that hasnt released any details yet
- apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you guys do realize that the virtual console is not going to give you immediate instant access to the entire nintendo catalog from day one, right?
they plan to roll out titles on a schedule. no major problem there IMHO, but dont expect to get every single nintendo game ever made available on day one. - staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Final Fantasy Versus is said to be a fighting game. A spinoff of FFXIII.
- kelbear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The Wiimote is a nice excuse for RPGs to be less select-this-and-then-wait-for-things-to-happen. I love RPGs but god I loathed the combat systems in the majority of them, with just a few exceptions (chrono trigger, grandia, suikoden) who were a little less rigid compared to the others of their time. In ff8 I just played through with cheats and the no-encounters accessory so I could enjoy the content rather than the grind. I keep playing and enjoying RPGs, but I'm just /tolerating/ the combat.
If I'm only going to be seeing action-rpgs on the Wii, I think I'll live. It's the epic story of RPGs that I like, if they can hold onto that while jazzing up the gameplay I'll be tickled pink. - MisterCookie, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I don't mind. I'm a long time FF fanboy, but I'm sure as hell not willing to pay $600 for PS3 and FFXIII just to keep up with the franchise. Sony already has screwed me with their HDD and its nonexistent support, why bother dumping more money in them?
- MechaFenris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would rather have a few good RPGs than a ton of mediocre ones. :) That being said, I'll probably be dead before I finish all the RPGs I have for the PS2. :P
- randomguy0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Digg this comment down.
- MechaFenris, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I think there will be more RPGs for the Wii, just like there are more than Morrowind now for the FPS-heavy 360. I have little evidence to really point to any reason why I think that way, other than the growing list of 360 RPGs from a console that had very little in its previous incarnation in terms of PS2-style RPGs.
I thought I remembered seeing an add for a new Paper Mario, of course there's a Zelda, along with some other ones that are probably a bit off in the future...
The lack of a glut of RPGs at launch is not really part of my reason to wait until late spring next year to get a Wii, but ever since the Dreamcast launch day stuff, I really don't get into launch-day consoles. And I certainly don't want to camp out for one. ;)
Nintendo may be targeting the casual gamer, but I hope they don't totally abandon the RPG nuts. ;) - theratdotus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3 Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness RPG 6.8 Oct 6, 2005

oh crap, 4 years and not one good pure rpg... i havent thought of this paradox... i hope square gives nintendo some love. - LunarOcean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Forgive me, I forgot to mention Baten Kaitos as well - it's there too.
- stenk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Loved this comment
"To call Untold Legends an RPG would be like calling Mario ’survival horror’."
LMFAO - randomguy0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't most good RPGs take a long time to make?
So how is this news anyway?
And are there any RPGs for the PS3 launch? - apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1people called diablo an rpg. untold legends is a rip of champions of norrath with was a rip of diablo placed in the everquest world.
realistically, they all follow D&D-like rulesets, so they /could/ be considered rpgs. i think the downplaying of the story element in favor of hacking and slahing action is where they cross the line.
IMHO, UT isnt not an rpg either. - LunarOcean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Both Skies of Arcadia and Tales of Symphonia have been hailed as wonderful games, despite their ratings, which are pretty good to begin with.
Although I wish Square would give something to Nintendo aside from Crystal Chronicles, they are not the only maker of great RPGs. Namco has shown me that as of late, as Capcom and Working Designs have shown me in the past. And lets not forget Suikoden. - NikoKun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think we'll see a Lost Magic game on the Wii... it was a fun game on the DS... and i'm SURE they'll make a Wii version... just imagine casting spells like that! XD
- bloodylip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yeah, a "Tales of..." active battle system with the wii control could have potential.
- DIGGAGE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice idea i totally digg it man.
great game by the way -
