- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+40My first thought was "oh god, please don't let them start calling themselves 'athletes'"... then i read the article and... there it was
"Like any professional athlete..."
Lol.. yeah... playing video games makes you an athlete? Geeze... I use to think it didn't get worse than watching band-o's walk around with their varsity jackets, now video game players get to say they are "athletes"? Haha, what a world. - jon61575, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25I thought it was very interesting to see how far video gaming has come. Maybe I should quit my job and start playing video games full-time.
- batmang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Well it's probably less boring than getting paid doing some boring repetitive desk job.
- SoyAmerika, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15MLGpro continues to amaze me. They can afford all this prize money when they can't pay a dj $150??? I dj'd for them in Seattle almost 2 years back, and they never paid me. Michael Sepso did nothing depsite promises otherwise and Sundance said he would help and didn't. I have absolutely zero respect for this company. I even had to put my speakers in a pawnshop because I was dead broke at the time and really needed the money to pay bills.
These corporate lowlifes kept telling me, oh, it will be 2 more weeks. Check never came, they don't return my calls or email anymore and don't forget Lorenza that set it up. - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"Please don't delude yourselves into thinking you too will make a million dollars wasting your teenage and early adult years on computer games."
I dont beleive this will happen to me (also because Im australian) but I do waste my teenage and early adult years on games because they are fun ;) - TheComputerMutt, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20Correction: You're a stupid poster, no one likes you.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Gamers are NOT athletes. Try and have an ounce of respect for the people who wear that title. Except baseball players.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I don't care if they call themselves athletes as long as they don't start to go around assaulting people, raping women, buying their way out of prison by doing community service that involves signing autographs like real professional athletes do.
- btipling, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8That's not really how it works is it. Usually in professional sports, the league has teams, and the team's owners hire players, but here the league is hiring players. It's a publicity stunt, not money spent for competitive reasons.
- e03179, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Wow. Look how far competitive console gaming has come in just a few years. Each player gets $250K to play a console game. This is good news for gamers on PC and console platforms.
I wonder:
When will HALO 2 begin to get old? It could be a while. Counter-Strike has been out longer than H2 and has more players playing it per day than H2. Still H2 is one of the most popular FPS games out there.
Will PC gaming start to move forward now with higher payouts? It seems the console-only league is catching up. Maybe these $$$ will influence PC gaming leagues and tournaments.
When will MLG adopt the XBOX 360 platform? It seems they should be gaming on the latest and greatest (although I know there are some problems with H2 on the 360).
When will console gaming and PC gaming merge? I think it will happen when the XBOX 360 game developers natively support USB keyboards and mice as valid input devices. Yeah, said devices work on the 360, yet I don%u2019t know of any game that can accept signals from those input devices.
I think XBOX 360 titles will eventually support keyboards and mice as valid input devices. If H3 is used in MLG and H3 supports keyboard and mice as input devices, will MLG allow keyboards and mice in their events?
Times, they are a changing. Competitive gaming on the PC and console platforms just got more interesting. - matija, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I should name my kid Final Boss.. he would kick a lot of ass
- twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"thats just your oppinion. its also probably the majority oppinion here because it is digg, but most of the world doesn't agree with you"
This all coming from a guy who can't spell opinion.
Hopefully professional gaming will become as popular as professional sports, because then we will see a large number of giant lan parties and gaming leagues pop up everywhere. I'm probably not the only one here who finds it more fun to play video games with people in person than to be sitting in a dark room playing with some voices coming out of my speakers - EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://www.judgejudy.com/SubmitCase/submitcase.asp
- dh8r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I want to point out that this makes about 0.00000001% of kiddies living their dream being "professional athletes" at a stupid game."
@ r2d7: How many "kiddies" who dream of being "real" pro athletes make it to the big leagues? Are those games/sports also stupid? - unrealJEDI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't think gamers are athletes but neither are chess masters. I have a great deal of respect for chess and the same goes for people who are crazy good at games. They are not atheletes but that doesn't discount the fact that they have talent, passion and commitment for competition.
- dignon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Watching other to paly games is boring."
People pay (or encourage advertisers to pay) to watch others play games all the time... football, baseball, hockey, soccer -- geez, even poker, ferchristsake! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9I want to point out that this makes about 0.00000001% of kiddies living their dream being "professional athletes" at a stupid game.
Please don't delude yourselves into thinking you too will make a million dollars wasting your teenage and early adult years on computer games. - synide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Where is all of this bs about gamers calling themselves athletes? Where have they called themselves athletes? The quote was "Like any professional athlete, ...". He isnt saying "I am an athlete", he is just likening himself to them. Pro gamers have so many of the same traits that make athletes so marketable. The closest they come to calling themselves athletes is "cyber-athelete".
So pull the stick out of your ass. These guys are the best at this. Nobody is just "sitting around pushing buttons all day". Go back to your normal job already. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Seemingness of perfection??? Ever met an AWP whore? Yeah. Perfection. THose dam guns can shoot through concrete walls. It lasted because of what unrealJEDI said. Not because its "perfect." Because, its not
- synide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3MLG isnt just "signing them up" to only play in their league. The reason they are giving them so much money, is to show legitimacy to the sport. To show that pro gamers can and will be "superstars" just like your favorite pro athletes. Even that being said, there are several other leagues that would love to have the exclusivity of the #1 halo 2 team in the world.
- dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7thats just your oppinion. its also probably the majority oppinion here because it is digg, but most of the world doesn't agree with you
- SeptBoot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4u might see something new if you watch someone else play
like i was watching someone else play halo "1" and they thru 2 plasma grenades without moving the crosshair, and when the first went off it sent the other flying up, it stuck to a bansee and took it right down
:) - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3unless if the CS pros start to play H2 with Mouse+Keyboard
- WolfwoodX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31: It is the only ***** game anyone wants to play anymore. You either hate loving it or love hating it
2: PC games are more for "enthusiasts" who have the will or the cash flow to get a superhighendkickyourass PC
3: Halo was made for the Xbox, not the 360. Why spend 300 extra on a console that accomplishes the same thing, only not as good? Sure it looks better, but it has a weird delay that makes everyone bitch about it.
4: Never.
5: No. You need a desk for that. Desks take up room and cost extra. Also, the controller is universal. No one has an advantage over anyone equipment wise.
6: Tru Dat - Brak710101, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6What if most of the world dosn't agree with you and agrees with him?
WTF now? - newevilmind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3wtf???
They think people are going to want to watch other people play videogames??? - streetlamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3People will still care alot more about CPL, CAL and CEVO anyway, this is just like most new gaming leagues and it will go no where. Especially since they are playing Halo 2.
- Chesh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If only Halo 2 could be played with a keyboard and mouse, I'd show them what for!
- dolbex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yikes... Synide is tearing them up.
Congrats to Final Boss and TSquared! - spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Boom headshot!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You have 8 "gibs" of ram? Is that what you kids call it these days?
"Daaaaaaaaddy please it's my birthday soon buy me another gib of ram!!!!!!!!!!" - andreizilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2he made it pretty far for his age, so quit your bitching.
- Obsidian743, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Thresh" has been and always will be the name that stands out. He started it all and to think it was one guy winning a nice PC and a used Ferrari would start million-dollar contracts. Just...WOW.
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2>> Watching other to paly games is boring.
I have to disagree. As an example, I used to watch Warcraft 3 replays all the time, and I found it quite interesting to see how some players could make a comeback from almost certain defeat, and win the game. Watching something like this live would be awesome. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm Aussie too and I spent my formative years playing games as well. I'm not saying playing games is bad, or against playing games, I'm just against a generation of kids who are probably thinking right about now that gaming is more important than an education / real job / etc.
- kuyakew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3a gamer calling themselves an athlete is a complete and utter joke . i like playing video games too but thats just ridiculous.
getting 1mil for sitting on your ass all day pressing buttons? what is our society coming to?#!@# - unrealJEDI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't think Counter Strike has lasted because it's perfect, I like the game not because it's perfect but because it's straight forward. It's an easy game to run and always has been. It's free to play online and not crazy taxing on even a moderately built PC.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thresh started it for computer gaming but this type of industry created and sponsored publicity has been going on forever.
- 0zzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I, really am not a Halo 2 fan. I have been following the eSports community for years, and I believe games like Counter-Strike and Starcraft (in Korea, at least), are just way more professional in nature. Also, no the first video gaming league, and not the biggest contract. Korean player got one million dollars, a year, by himself, didn't have to share with 4 others for 3 years. Anywho, gj for them. Hopefully people will open their eyes to PC eSports.
- synide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yea, i guess world series of poker wasnt really realistic either.
games are getting huge. its not like some gimmick. games wont die, they will only get bigger and more a part of everyday life. MLG would have to f up major for this to not succeed.
i'm wondering how people can so blindly support CPL, simply because it plays PC games instead of consoles. MLG has made more progress in competitive gaming in its 3 years, than the CPL has done in over twice that. theres nothing wrong with the CPL, but the PC gamer demographic is so un-marketable to the mass public. go to an MLG event. i have been to both. i like CPL more, but thats because im a major dork. that doesnt look good on TV. MLG shows that gamers can be cool like pro athletes, and have the same legitimacy of skill. - innerspirit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1because people play them and they make for good publicity
- synide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hrmmm, then why are CPL and CAL playing halo2? Console games outsell PC games by a ridiculous factor. The PC gaming world is still stuck with a 6 year old game. Whether that is a testament to it's "perfection" is irrelevant. No one is trying to say console gaming is "better" for pro gaming. MLG is simply targeting a different audience, that is 100 million console owners, as opposed to the relatively few people playing PC games.
- scott1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's boring watching people playing video games
Oh yeah I do think it's boring watching sports. - poipoipoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and you have to practice and practice your moves, you have to know all the secret crap -- if there's a way to make gaming NOT fun, this is it...
- MrCodeDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I actually played with OGRE2 in Americas Army the first summer it came out. I still have his screenname on my buddy list.
Kind of surreal. - rsalsman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm pretty sure the CPL (Cyberathlete Professional League) has been around for much longer than the MLG. Also the CPL is a much larger spectacle if I'm not mistaken.
Can't blame them for trying to hype their league up though. The more leagues that give credibility to gaming, the more the competitive games industry will grow. - ShadowRelic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2pretty much anyone with any talent on halo 2 has respect for mlg, and you can't say that "hardcore gamers" don't play halo 2. MLG has made halo 2 what it is, the default gametypes are geared toward the average gamer which makes them not as fun for someone that is actually good at the game. MLG invented gametypes that require skill, and that is why they are respected.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree. I have played team based fps's in many leagues , Twl, ogl, cal . These halo2 players can not hold a candle to pc gamers that play realistic 1 shot to the head your dead games.
How do you get the precision aiming needed for headshots using your thumb on an xbox controller?
Apples and oranges though. They most likely couldn't take me in rtcw or et, and I coudln't take them in halo2 -
