- Threnody, on 10/12/2007, -9/+38Personally what I saw of the Wii (via web video of variable quality) looked just fine. Last week I was at a Futureshop and played Top Spin on the XBox 360. I was, quite simply, underwhelmed. It was okay but didn't seem like anything that I couldn't play (in a slightly less ugly form) on my PS2.
While it's been said a million times, I'm really eager for a new way to play. Even Wii tennis piques my interest a lot more than Top Spin did, although I'll reserve final judgment until I play it for myself. - SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22I think all he's saying is that games will get better looking later in the console's life, but we gamers already know that is always the case. Although, I'm surprised to see it doesn't really matter to me anymore. I'm really sold on Nintendo's gameplay over graphics idea. They have their heads in the right place and I hope it works because if it does we'll all benefit. Still, Nintendo's been hinting for a while that the Wii is more graphically capable than the public suspects and I'm curious to know what they mean by that exactly...
- wabbiteh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15They were using Gamecube shells, with Wii hardware inside them.
- Nyfeh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15It wasn't the graphics that were to be revolutionary...
- andrewlubinus89, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13There is something really authentic about wowing us with gameplay early on to get us hooked and then introducing the pretty games later that way any cool stuff we get is a pleasant surprise. It's seems much more honest than showing us stills of the graphics (or worse hyping a console with prerendered graphics (think Sony in the past). I'm pretty psyched about this console.
- PDAIsAOk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Maybe the whole "pure horsepower" is the tip of the iceberg. Nintendo has already stated that not all of the wii's capibilities have been publicly released. I wonder what they have up their sleeve.
- electroktan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Zelda TP looked pretty good to me and that was only 1/3-1/2 of the graphical capability?
- Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18You're about as lame as Dwight in The Office.
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13I don't think a "True HDTV" is going to WOW someone like you think it is in terms of gameplay. The OP said that the experience offered him nothing he couldn't have now on the PS2 in a slightly lower res form. Making Tennis into HD is not the solution he wants. He wanted a different gaming experience.
If this even tied in whith what someone wanted out of the X360 vs Wii, why should a games graphics have to constantly prove whether or not it's fun? If it's prettier and full of more reflections does it make it better? I've seen some slick lookin' games that were crap to play. Rez was one of the most fun and unique games I've played. Graphics look like they're from 1985. Still fun to play.
Or better still, are Burnout Revenge, Gun, or King Kong any better JUST because they were ported to HD? No, they're the same game. The HD versions are just HD'ed. That's it. If it was a mediocre game in one form, it will be on the other. - superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -10/+18hmm, were you using 360 on a true HDTV? also, the game really makes a difference. To see the true power of the 360, play Call of Duty 2 or Project Gotham Racing 3 on it. Those are beautiful games and show the capabilities of the xBox at launch, which means with improvement they will be able to squeeze a good bit out of it.
On the Wii, I wouldn't be suprised if Nintendo pulls an Apple and up and says HD capabilities at launch a week before said launch. - Omega697, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Last, I checked, 480p WAS today's standards. What is the standard resolution of the typical household television, anyway? Oh that's right. 480.
- Demagogue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I always thought that the gamecube had better hardware than the ps2, and then the xbox wasnt that far ahead
- Omega697, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Trying to piggyback your digg submissions on the back of one that already hit the front page is lame. Let your submission stand on its own. If it's good, people will digg it. Otherwise they won't.
- iUser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Isn't this kind of obvious? Don't console games generally use more of the console's power as time goes on and the devs become more familiar with them?
That aside though, I'm not too worried about the Wii's graphics power. From what I've seen it looks as though it will be decent, but nothing revolutionary...thats what the controller is for =p
BTW: New Digg user, just saying hi =) - biffsputnik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Because of course,
1) you have a lock on final specs and
2) lines of resolution is EVERYTHING in gaming graphics
Sorry sonyboy, but wii isn't going anywhere. Except in everyone's living rooms. - FoolErrant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7and the other half knows ATi >>> nVidia. The two reigning kings of GPUs trade the top-end space every few generations. Nintendo's used ATi before, and their graphic systems are excellent when used to the fullest. Nintendo's had some graphics capacities built-in to the GCN that weren't on the XBox or PS2 to make up for the lack of raw processor horsepower so that companies could built customized versions that would look as good. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't do the same with the Wii.
- Mac2492, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14This is so true. My PC can handle games like Half Life 2 on full, but Diablo II still looks dated. That doesn't make my PC weak. It's not easy to design games that fully take advantage of their system on the first try.
- ascott9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5From what I read about that it was NOT gamecube hardware, just the cases. I hope it was gamecube hardware though ;)
- Malakin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@Demagogue ATI bought ArtX a year before gamecubes hit store shelves, most of the development was done before the transaction. ATI's westcoast team which was mostly former ArtX members went on to develop the R300 core, which most people know as the very successful Radeon 9700.
- Insert31990, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A slight graphical improvement will be most welcome, although as I stand I am fine with what the graphics have provided.
Viva la Wii. - lazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7you sir, are an idiot.
- humanpowered, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4All I know is that if a Wii is 2-3 times more powerful than a Gamecube, and the Gamecube was relatively comparable to an Xbox, and the Xbox was able to handle Doom 3 and Half Life 2 then I'm thinking that the graphics on the Wii will be just fine for me.
That said, the GPU may not be exceptionally powerful in and of itself, but the way it handles its duties may be exceptional; Nintendo is a company that prefers finesse over brute force. - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5wii tennis is on rails, so the player youre controlling naturally gravitates to the ball. what you have to worry about is the timing, direction and speed of your swing--which the game is VERY receptive to
- MyLordLog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7The Wii is going to be such the "party" console. Outside of the expected platformer and adventure games, the nunchuck remote is going to be a blast with others.
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5In all seriousness, I fail to see how handling the remote's going to be much more stress than any other item of similar size that we hold in our days.
MUCH heavier golf clubs are often swung repeatedly over a 3-6 hour timeframe with little ill effects.
Tennis rackets, footballs, pool cues, bowling balls, free weights.
I've had to handheld a Betacam camera for several hours in a row on several occasions. It's not that hard.
People spend too much of their current gaming time clutching something that's like 3-4 inches from your crotch. If you're straining to move your hands from there for more than 5 minutes at a time you've got some problems.
If you're so worried about "Carpal Tunnel" from intermittently playing a video game, go lift some 10 lbs freeweights for a few months. I'm sure your newly trained hands and forearms will more than be able to handle a 6 oz piece of plastic. - Ray301, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yeah, how dare nintendo encourage physical movements that equates to any forms of excercise! ;)
I just don't get the argument of "arms getting tired from movements that emulate the real life action"... ok, so what if you do get tired after a few round of wii tennis and your arms get sore and you work up a sweat? isn't that a good thing? People keep trying to bash what the Wii is doing by comparing it to the status quo of current consoles... like "there's not enough buttons", "my arms will get tired", "how am i supposed to play street fighter" etc etc... its like getting into a car and asking "where's the bike pedals?" - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was about to Digg this, but then I didn't. The first generation of a console's games are ALWAYS "the tip of the iceburg." This isn't a revelation.
- Malakin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"even though Wii is supposed to be 2-3 times more powerful."
I'm sure it's a lot more then just 2-3 time more powerful. There will be over 5 years between the releases. I suppose someone is just looking at CPU mhz, obviously a poor indicator of overall power.
ArtX did the graphics hardware for the Gamecube and they were bought out by ATI in 2000 and now ATI is doing the graphics hardware for the Wii so there may of been a bunch of ex-ArtX guys working on it (?) - iUser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Its not even close to a similar situation...
Why would Nintendo punish ATI for free press? (and good press at that) - SilentPurity, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11Why have "just fine", when you can have "just fine" times three? (Actually 2 to 2.5 as it says in the article.)
- Pests, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Anyone else find this comment hard to read?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6OK I dont understand why this question consistently goes unanswered. We have tried and tried and get NO response back from either Nintendo, or developers.
SO NO HD, WHAT ABOUT ANTI-ALIASING?
I mean come on. Jagged edges are so 10 years ago. Most of the WII demos I saw had jaggies all over them and no visuals signs of anti-aliasing. That is unacceptable. You are telling me that the WII isn't powerful enough to render a 720x480 image with 2x multi-sample anti-aliasing? WHAT?! My 800mhz imac g3 is able to at 60fps.
In my opinion, the only real benefit to HD gaming is the lack of aliasing due to higher resolution. (Come on, we can all do the render test with our pc's right now.) 480P is absolutely fine for gaming right now. Frankly, when I watch Toy Story on DVD, it looks pretty friggin good. There is no aliasing, there are no blurry low-rez textures, and it has the same 720x480 pixels to deal with. Until console image quality can match that of a dvd, then 480p is just fine.
BUT, and this is a but bigger than mine, we NEED anti-aliasing. Maybe I'm the only one who watched the Metroid Prime 1 ship-landing intro at the beginning of the game and saw those yellow antennas and went "ew, that looks really bad". Maybe it's the fact that I've had high definition gaming at 1600x1200 on my pc for almost 8 years now. Maybe everyone else is blind to this and I'm the only one that can see?
I don't care how powerful your graphics chip is ATI. The fact is, if it can't even anti-alias, I don't care about you.
When I stood there playing the Zelda Wii demo and went to use the bow to fire, the first thing I noticed was the stair-stepping on the bow. It was ugly and ridiculous. I am not a sony fanboy, but I am willing to shell out 600 bones for graphics that will look better than my 5 year old imac. - JackAxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There will be "16" Wii titles at launch. Late 2007 is simply speculation on your part.

I've personally seen peeps buying a "Nintendo DS," because of BrainAge. Although Mario and an overall saturation of great games make it a worthwhile purchase. - mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ya, I've had a GCN for a few years, but just got an XBox in the last month to catch up on some of the FPS games I missed being a Mac user with a GameCube. Anyways, I've been pretty impressed how decent it looks at 480p widescreen on my HDTV. If the Wi is, say, 2x more powerful than the XBox, and is going to be running at the same resolutions, it's going to look really, really good.
- FreyrVanir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The ArtX people also worked on the N64 video hardware. They did it when they worked at Silicon Graphics, Inc. Then they made there own company and did the hardware for the GameCube, When ArtX was bought by ATI, the same group which is now in ATI, is making the Wii hardware.
The ArtX people have a long and close relationship with Nintendo. The XBox360 video ship is being made by ATI but by a hole different group. - Kokichi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Honestly, all that matters is how SSBB looks. Really, no other game will have the life span as it will.
- ghostcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the price tag of the ps3 will be enough to keep parents from being persuaded by some pimply teenager.
- tokyopimp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well good thing I've been playing drums for 15 plus years! That would not bother me in the least.
Anyways, on topic yes the Wii is going to rock, just for the games, and if the graphics get better over the years, well it's just icing on the cake. - BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm sure that everyone who, like me, has invested the money in a nice 1080p is most definately looking to display something that can really take advantage of it. Not only that, but most of them can also afford to pay the higher price for a 360/ps3 (or both).
You dont buy an HD tv and still feel content watching/playing standard def content. Doesnt work that way. - v0id, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3...displacement mapping? Are you referring to Nintendo's patent on it, or the system actually using it? I'm pretty sure that the process of using displacement mapping is pretty intensive on the hardware and real time use of it while keeping the framerate up would a tricky task. I'm not saying its not possible, just not used extensively. For the patent heres the digg link http://digg.com/gaming/Nintendo_Displacement_Mapping_Patents_Found
- dbpigeon, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10Stop spamming Digg. Whenever I see something like this, I go there and report it, no matter if I would've dugg it if I'd found it on my own.
- vannoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"..if u examine the progression of console technology. They just keep rehashing the same concepts and ideas and push them to us.."
Weird, I thought that's what Nintendo was trying to avoid with the Wii... - bsantos, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Right... because everyone has the standard HDTV capable of displaying 1080p ....
- Tweekster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Because everyone I knows has an HDTV...oh wait current market penetration of HDTV's is what like 2%, and maybe 25% in the next 5 years.
- Abatrour, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I'm thinking that you will be able to use the gpu for other things like you can with the x1000 series. Ati has said before that they will be able to do physics better than Ageia and Nvidia.
"I think what you saw [on Wii] was just the tip of the iceberg of what the Hollywood chip can bring to the Nintendo Wii,"
He didn't say specifically that the graphics could look better (but I'm sure they would after time), he said that there is more to the gpu than your seeing.
... or its displacement mapping :P - Daedalus81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It occurs in 10% of adults and more in women than in men and peaks in occurence at around age 50. I'm 25 and male.. I'm not worried about it..
The population who should be worried about it will not likely be playing for hours and hours. I think your arguement is moot. Additionally a new study was done, which stated : "Several studies have indicated a strong correlation between an employee's general physical condition and carpal tunnel complaints.
Hyperthyroidism, osteoarthritis and diabetes were most often associated with CTS-like symptoms, as were variables such as age, obesity and wrist dimension. In a studies by SG Atcheson, only 35 of 297 subjects were aware of the underlying health condition which could account for their CTS like symptoms"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpal_tunnel_syndrome - hamstereater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Most everything in that article is rumor/fake anyways, so yeah stop spamming.
- BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the "[xbox 360 vs wii -] I don't think it's a fair comparison" comment from the article better...
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gosh you must be thinking of the GC's storage. If anything, there's your fault in why the "graphics weren't as good."
When you use proprietary discs of 1GB, you limit on how much space you're going to dedicate to texturing art. But, if I had to side by side something as well known as Spiderman 2, the GC version looked substantially better. Why? Because there was better aliasing in the game. You definitely had a lower end look to the PS2 version. GC version got the shaft on more detailed textures, but at least they scaled better. :P
Why do people always assume that ATI=Chevy and NVidia=Ford? They're both graphics cards. I think when the developers are optimizing games for a specific chipset, they're going to do the best they can. I have to look REALLY hard to spot general differences between the two. And if I'm lookin' for aliasing on some leaf in the back of some jungle on a Crysis screenshot, you're on dope if you think more than 20 percent of the gaming public care about that.
If your loyalties lie with one card manufacturer over a console manufacturer, you're one hard up fanboy who's expecting more out of so little than the rest of us. - ghostcat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The nintendo people have had the controller for quite a while now. I'd imagine they've put it through the paces and would have noticed if employees were complaining of wrist pain.
