- Smwbigboss, on 12/02/2007, -28/+126They still make PSPs?
(I kid, I kid) - LegomanArt, on 12/02/2007, -11/+75You're all retarded.
And I'm not kidding. - shinythingy, on 12/02/2007, -9/+70I think its pretty obvious it wont outsell the DS but the article seemed to be hating on the PSP. I think its success has been overshadowed by the DS' huge sales numbers. Sure it wont overtake it but what SONY have done is a great thing. It has been one of the only, if not the only handheld to go up against Nintendo and made a name for itself.
- cubeeggs, on 12/02/2007, -14/+71PSP? Is that like an N-Gage?
- JustAn0th3rFace, on 12/02/2007, -1/+51i own a DS and i am very satisfied with it. I am also a very big nintendo fanboy.
yet, i am very happy the PSP exists, as it has been the best rival to the Nintendo handhelds to date.
Without competition, a company can overthrow the market and just create insane prices and not care about their product. Atleast Sony is kind of keeping Nintendo on its toes.
Another thing to consider.. this was, what, Nintendos fifth handheld? (Not including all of the different versions of the advanced) while this is Sony's first. For a first time product, they didn't do too bad. Sony just needs to analyze the market a bit better, as they are losing in many aspects right now.
So, those are the reasons the PSP wont overthrow the DS. Yet, the next generation may prove to be interesting. may. - tjmb9, on 12/02/2007, -2/+51you own a PSP that ISN'T modded? I thought that was the only reason to buy one...
- mrfreeziexp, on 12/02/2007, -1/+47you can run windows 95 on a PSP? O_O
- bethlagarrison, on 12/02/2007, -9/+49I need to figure out how to run homebrews and emulators on my PSP. Might give me a reason to find it and dust it off.
- goerg, on 12/02/2007, -8/+48i'm so sick of this whole console war thing...
- inactive, on 12/02/2007, -6/+41Fanboys are the cancer that is killing Digg.
Also, do as many people do, and buy both. Screw opinionated blogs written by viral marketers for 12 year olds. - inactive, on 12/02/2007, -7/+39MMMMmmm Homebrew
- inactive, on 12/02/2007, -0/+32The screen is surprisingly big, although it's a lot better to convert movies and store them on memory stick than actually buying UMDs.
They should have packaged some DVDs with free UMDs to market them or just made a version where you get both for only a couple of bucks more. Nobody wants to spend a lot for a proprietary format that's only used for a portable. - WhereAmI, on 12/02/2007, -5/+36The Ngage made a name for itself too. The "Taco".
- theaceoffire, on 12/02/2007, -3/+33Just like how people used to gush over a 9 inch screen, you get used to it.
Compared to the DS or gameboys, the screen is gigantic... I love the sucker. - doshindude, on 12/02/2007, -8/+36The PSP is only good for running homebrew (Windows 95 on PSP, anyone?)
- TangentThought, on 12/02/2007, -2/+28No one uses UMD for movies anymore. I just watch movies/TV Shows off my memory stick.
- TangentThought, on 12/02/2007, -7/+31"But with the DS, Nintendo took a lesson from Sony's PS2 and made their portable compatible with Game Boy Advance titles (GBA)."
How is this a comparable reason? The PSP had no predecessor to get games from. Well... unless you have a custom firmware-enabled PSP, you could play all those GBA, Genesis, SNES, NES, and PS1 games. - Super6, on 12/02/2007, -0/+24Yes, as well as linux
- mrmacky, on 12/02/2007, -1/+24Windows 95, you're so behind the times, we've got Windows 98 SE running already ^_^
- Super6, on 12/02/2007, -1/+22The screen is plenty big (4.3 widescreen, I think) so it's fine to watch movies on, it's just more practical to watch them off the memory stick than to buy a UMD version of DVD's you already own.
- loganhid, on 12/02/2007, -2/+23PSP is only awesome when running homebrew. For non gaming it's an amzing piece of hareware - watch high quality videos/movies, play music, browse net and so much more.
- dysonlu, on 12/02/2007, -7/+28For people who aren't smart enough to realize this, especially the moronic fanboys: you should be glad there's competition. Otherwise, you'd still be stuck with Gameboy, Gameboy Advanced, Gameboy Advanced SP, Game Boy Micro, Gameboy Micro Lite, Gameboy Micro Lite Slim, Game Boy Mini Micro Lite Slim, etc.
- Myonosken, on 12/03/2007, -0/+19Linux is a given nowadays. If it exists, some obsessive has put it on it.
- Ocelot13, on 12/02/2007, -1/+19qj,net
all you need - thedarkhaze, on 12/02/2007, -0/+17windows 95 is actually very nice for virus protection, no one writes viruses for it :)
- RxDaniel, on 12/03/2007, -0/+16I would like to point out that you listed a demo as one of the best PSP games. That was probably one of the best arguments against your point that you could have made.
- Tivor, on 12/02/2007, -0/+16Console or format war had some merit in the very beginning, since nobody wanted to commit to a format that's going to die off.
But now, it's fairly clear that both DS and PSP have found their sustainable market, and will thrive pretty well throughout their product life cycles. So any format war now is just pointless bickering between fanboys who find their self-worth only through the console of their choice.
In other words, WHO CARES WHICH ONE SELLS MORE???? As long as they're both selling enough to not die off (which they clearly are), who gives a crap???? - iofthestorm, on 12/02/2007, -1/+16How did they take a lesson from the PS2? Is the writer too young to remember the GBA and the GBC which both supported running games from the older generation?
- modifiedbears, on 12/02/2007, -4/+18Sony should have never used UMDs. No one wants to carry around a bunch of disks that eat up more battery life. 16gb flash memory inside a psp would be sweet, with a SD card slot for expansion. Let people buy games for it online and download them to it. These two changes alone would make me consider buying one.
- WhereAmI, on 12/02/2007, -7/+20Every time I see that comment I know the person is lying. The PSP has *plenty* of great games. The article this one is in response to mentioned that. Is a Ratchet and Clank not enough for you? What about the God Of War: Chains Of Olympus demo (with all its 10 minutes of play glory)? Silent Hill Origins? Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of The Lions? Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow? Not mentioning the two best games to hit for the PSP in the next few months: God Of War: Chains of Olympus and Final Fantasy: Crisis Core. Lets not forget the classics like Lumines and Mercury while we are at it.
- shinythingy, on 12/03/2007, -1/+13So you aren't in any position to judge it on its games
- Dan11023, on 12/02/2007, -4/+15Price. DUH.
- TangentThought, on 12/02/2007, -1/+12"Custom Firmware 3.71 M33 is better than everything. End of Comparison."
- Genjeta, on 12/02/2007, -4/+15Regarding the backwards compatibility issue.....the PSP can run everything from the PS1 and back, including ALL Nintendo consoles.
- Wrathernaut, on 12/02/2007, -2/+13No (hardware) modding required, only placing the right files in the right locations.
- linuxlucas, on 12/03/2007, -0/+10I would pay top dollar for a Game Boy Mini Micro Lite Slim.
- Kypt, on 12/02/2007, -4/+14"• The DS supports more than just the DS through backward compatibility. Sure, the PSP is great at playing PSP games. But with the DS, Nintendo took a lesson from Sony's PS2 and made their portable compatible with Game Boy Advance titles (GBA). Is it a huge deal? Maybe not. But one thing's for sure: backwards compatibility never hurt a console's sales, especially when it supported such a large library."
I know the DS runs homebrew but its community is nowhere as active and advanced as the PSPs homebrew community. They're talking about backward compatibility? The PSP runs whatever the DS can and more (except for, of course, nds games). PSP can run original PS games, SNES, NES, Genesis, GBA, and many more!
Now, regarding the other points, they may be right, but I just wanted to point out that in "backwards compatibility" the PSP completely owns the DS. (I own both and enjoy both of them for their particular games btw). - xerus, on 12/02/2007, -4/+13I own both...
- dysonlu, on 12/02/2007, -6/+15DS was seen as an underdog??? Can you dig up some old articles to support your claim?
- inactive, on 12/02/2007, -4/+12PSP was beyond it's time when it was first released. No one knew what it was and where it was going, but now with an 8gig memory card, it is the ultimate portable entertainment device.
Not always in the mood to play games? watch a movie or listen to some music, porn or browse the internet.
Use internet messaging, or download some mods, read a book, etc.
DS is a one trick pony, play DS games. - bethlagarrison, on 12/03/2007, -4/+12Well.. actually, I'm not.
I bought my PSP a couple of years back. Got a bunch of games for it, and traded more than half of them back because they were awful. I'm not a fan of God of War (I know, I know). I bought FFT, played it for a week, and realized that I couldn't bring myself to play through it again for the tenth time (especially with the way it chugs anytime you do something). Games like Parappa aren't worth the price. I got sick of Siphon Filter back in the PS1 days. I think Lumines is ***** boring. I love SF: Alpha 3 to death, but I can't play fighting games on the PSP for more than 10 minutes before I toss it aside in frustration at the crap D-Pad. I love Katamari, but the controls for the PSP version were so bad that I couldn't play it.
If you like it, awesome. But the PSP has never come out with a game that I really enjoyed or had to own. And it's not for lack of trying. My DS, on the other hand, gets played regularly. It's about the quality of the games and the kind of selection the system offers.
So, no, I'm not lying. I tried for over a year to really like my PSP, but eventually I stuck it in some box in some corner of my apartment and gave up. Sorry. - inactive, on 12/02/2007, -3/+11When you think about it, the PSP isn't doing bad at all, it's been the only real competitor to a Nintendo portable system.
- thebellmaster1x, on 12/02/2007, -5/+13By the way, open question to anybody who owns a PSP:
Do you actually watch UMDs? Seems like the screen would be way too small. - Robbothehood, on 12/02/2007, -5/+13It was a common opinion that the DS was a bad move and that the PSP was going to outperform it. There have been several articles likening the Wii's unlikely success to that of the DS.
- Hetman, on 12/02/2007, -1/+9I like them both. Really when I bought my psp the only think I wanted was a portable playstation. And that is exactly what they sold me. I wish their was dual analogues but their are some really good games on the psp. I do not ever think it will surpass the DS in numbers but it is still one of the best hand helds ever made.
- Tivor, on 12/02/2007, -2/+9Spoken like a true teenager who likes to pretend he's all grown-up.
- zeyad, on 12/03/2007, -1/+8You still make lame overused jokes?
(I kid, I kid) - so1omon, on 12/03/2007, -2/+8Actually, 50 is precisely 50 more than 0.
- Ocelot13, on 12/02/2007, -3/+9no. i play nes games and psx games
- safetyseal, on 12/03/2007, -0/+6you realize if they produced it at the beginning with 16gb flash which btw was not even produced at that time as far as i know it would have cost something to the tune of like 1800usd right? Are we so short sighted to not even see the massive drop in cost of solid state memory? I bought a psp the first day it came out and at that time a 2gb memory stick was something to the tune of 300-400usd. I own a ds lite with and r4 and own 3 2gb memory sticks with my psp...homebrew is fantastic on both consoles, and i enjoy them both for good points.

What is Digg?
