Or when something distinctively retro remarkets itself as modern. - viper001, on 08/01/2008, -4/+23Pokemon is FAR from a notable exception. In fact, I'd go as far as to say it's the worst offender of crappy-sequel spewing. Look at the formula from the first games:
* Silent protagonist meets overly talkative rival
* Professor named after a tree (oak, elm, etc) lets you choose between a fire/water/grass starter
* Rival picks the exact opposite type that you did, and periodically bumps into you through the game fighting you over and over again
* Objective: get all 8 badges, fight elite four to become a pokemon MASTER
* Team (rocket/magma/aqua/galaxy) has some stupid plot to takeover or whatever, and end up being defeated by you
* Legendary bird/dog/wtf pokemon
Seriously, every single pokemon game is like this. And this list picks Zelda -- which kicks ass, as an offender. - cdigioia, on 08/01/2008, -0/+18Zelda "failure to evolve" - That's because it's a really ***** good premise in the first place.

While I know the core gameplay behind Zelda is generally the same from title to title, they do at least branch out and attempt to bring new and fresh storylines to the series.

Tails was ***** useless in Sonic 2, but I liked playing as Knuckles in Sonic & Knuckles, and loved that they added the ability to change the gameplay of Sonic 2 & 3 with that "lock-on" cartridge.

On the other hand, my favorite Matrix movie is Reloaded, I really liked Star Wars Episode 3, and I enjoyed Speed Racer this summer. I'm used to being in the minority when it comes to what is "cool" to like and what isn't.

- TheTaoOfBill, on 08/01/2008, -1/+6I must be the only one who enjoyed Sonic and the Secret Rings. The controls were a bit iffy but over all it brought speed back to the sonic franchise. I'm actually looking forward to the next sonic because it is looking like they are building on the ideas of Sonic and The Secret Rings. It wasn't a perfect Sonic game but it's definitely a step in the right direction compared to all the crap we've been getting from sonic team.

We should be lucky that for the most part video game sequels are usually superior to their originals, a statement which can rarely be said about movie sequels.

- moraldebate, on 08/01/2008, -1/+5Totally true. The difference between the dungeon puzzles from game to game far (not to mention the inclusion of boating 75% of the time, turning into a ***** wolf, etc) outweigh the difference between the core gameplay of Pokemon games.

- terminalpariah, on 08/01/2008, -0/+4I've been listening to the Bionic Commando podcast since it started and the entire team *loves* the original BC games. Rearmed is getting tons of praise, and looks like a fantastic deal at $10. Bionic Commando 3D always shows extremely well. The only post-E3 criticism I heard was that the swing mechanic is difficult to master (and it wouldn't be BC if swinging were easy).

The Legend of Zelda is nothing like Link's Adventure, which is nothing like A Link to the Past, which is nothing like Ocarina of Time (maybe it is, but in 3d), which is nothing like Majora's mask, Which is nothing like Wind Waker, which is nothing like Twilight Princess.
