- newtrip, on 12/28/2007, -4/+145This list is lame. It's the literary equivalent of the "Back in my day, we had to walk barefoot, in the snow, and up-hill both ways to school; and by gosh we liked it" type of story.
Nobody ever writes an article on 7 ways that a modern keyboard has spoiled us from using the typewriter. We're to the point now where we will never go back, and to be honest, I'm totally fine with that. - inactive, on 12/28/2007, -2/+110They forgot, if you get shot, just wait a few seconds and you get better.
- chris4404, on 12/28/2007, -1/+86I would call it progress not being spoiled.
- Dumbledorito, on 12/28/2007, -0/+81From bash.org:
Things I've learned about war from videogames: If you find yourself mortally wounded by an enemy sniper be sure to let him know that he is a *****. - MasterThief117, on 12/28/2007, -1/+64Back in my day, Pluto was a planet.
- Waskonator, on 12/28/2007, -1/+37They forgot the "THIRD DIMENSION"
Ooooohhh! Ahhhhhhh! - LiamIsOnFire, on 12/28/2007, -0/+24I don't really understand how Open Worlds have made us lazier...
- jggr, on 12/28/2007, -0/+24True that. I read this list as why games are better today than yesterday. Spoiling? Only if we get hit by a giant EMP and we all have to go back to playing Monopoly.
- KnockoutNerd, on 12/28/2007, -0/+19Ah, the days where I had to walk over to turn on the console, I still do it every once in a while for the reminiscent feel.
- razmig, on 12/28/2007, -0/+18i don't know why but it is really annoying to hear that. it is turning YOU overweight and lazy, I and a lot of other people i know are all still in shape and active, YOU control yourself and the amount of gaming you do. Don't blame video games, only yourself.

You've got a universe of information in a little box right in front of you. Use it. - zdiggler, on 12/28/2007, -0/+14Nothing like having only 2% of health left and trying to be extremely careful not to get kill.
- caddyalan, on 12/28/2007, -1/+15The list didn't mention even more basic things which didn't exist in old games, like pause buttons (started in 8bit era), battery backup and memory cards instead of passwords, and game re-issues to replace aging carts and discs. ...Of course, most of today's innovations will seem old hat in five years.
- guy6600crazy, on 12/28/2007, -0/+13This list isn't a good one. Just another "read and forget" article.
- Shrubber, on 12/28/2007, -1/+14Back in MY day, Pluto was a dog. Nobody really liked him THAT much, though.
- inactive, on 12/28/2007, -1/+14Dude, what the ***** are you talking about?
- ramenite, on 12/28/2007, -1/+13I'll tell you the top one they left off the list. Gamefaqs.com
Before the internet really took off, we had to actually PLAY the game, and actually figure out how to do stuff. Now you look at the kids (and a lot of adults), that as soon as they can't do something on the first try, they fire up gamefaqs and get a complete walkthrough on how to do it.
A decent recent example...Portal. There were a lot of people, at the drop of the hat that couldn't figure out how to advance, printed out a FAQ that told them how to beat the entire game. Kind of defeats the purpose of playing it, but there's a majority that play their games exactly like that. - Racerx52, on 12/28/2007, -0/+12This list sucks, It's kind of like...Anti-nostalgia
- deadbaby, on 12/28/2007, -0/+12This is a really bad list. Doesn't even make sense. How do open worlds in games make you lazier? roster updates? Web browsing? That's not even gaming related. Wireless controllers? One has a wire, one doesn't. What difference does it make?
You can definitely make an argument that modern games are easier and, ultimately, less satisfying but that point was pretty much ignored. - Edrick, on 12/28/2007, -1/+12I play games for fun. If I'm stuck then I'm personally not having fun. It may be cheap to cheat by your standards, but I and others don't play for the same reasons you do.
- chris9902, on 12/28/2007, -0/+11dude, the PS3 is 4D
- whatthefu, on 12/28/2007, -0/+10I'm surprised he didn't bitch about game saves. I, for one, seriously hated the life system in games, specifically in Sonic the Hedgehog. You had to play the same ***** levels over and over, and if you made a mistake later on you may have to start all over. It isn't fun; it got tedious after a while for me.
- saifatlast, on 12/28/2007, -0/+10Other ways in which we are being spoiled according to this article:
Healthy people no longer dying of common illnesses and infections.
No longer living under feudalism.
No longer needing to walk around in sewage to get around on sidewalks.
Mostly able to afford food and comforts.
Man, what a bunch of spoiled brats we are. - inactive, on 12/28/2007, -0/+9Agreed. I don't understand how online matchmaking is spoiling people. I can play with many of my friends who are in different colleges than me, excuse me if I don't feel like driving 4 hours to play with a friend just so I can physically play a game with him.
- Predater, on 12/28/2007, -0/+9Yep, earlier atleast you needed to find a medkit or painkillers to get better, but now all you need is to get out of the line of fire and in a few seconds you are good as new.
- Wartz, on 12/28/2007, -0/+8why? I do it fairly often.
- Sedako, on 12/28/2007, -0/+8I'd rather have games that actually take more than a weekend to finish and have a lot of replay value. Modern games are often far too easy or oversimplified for the console gamers. While there have been some great games released recently, I miss the days of Deus Ex, Fallout, Goldeneye 64/Perfect Dark.. there are so many older games that I still prefer to newer ones.
- RedHerringHack, on 12/28/2007, -2/+10Pluto? Never heard of it.
- Uranium118, on 12/28/2007, -0/+8"it's just making our life easier"
That IS progress. - dood, on 12/28/2007, -0/+8I'd add one more: in-game tutorials. It used to be I didn't look at manuals, so I could explore for myself the game and how it works. Now most games have a forced tutorial level or at least help pop-ups. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but I have noticed I miss it when I play really old games, a sure sign I am spoiled.
- inactive, on 12/28/2007, -2/+10And right now I'm using my Wii web browser to digg this article.
- stormgren, on 12/28/2007, -1/+9ADD much? Or am I missing some obscure reference?
- inactive, on 12/28/2007, -2/+9This article is terrible. It sounds like an old man complaining about new-fangled electronics...
- ELCad, on 12/28/2007, -0/+6I hate that. It makes everyone run away.
- mufasa, on 12/28/2007, -0/+6I do it every once in a while b/c my 360 doesn't always turn on when i turn on the controller :(
- zwaldowski, on 12/28/2007, -0/+6*****. Easy saving allows for gaming more as a quick passtime, rather than a "let-me-sit-down-and-play-for-an-hour" activity. I have jump in, load, play, save, and leave.
- Dumbledorito, on 12/28/2007, -0/+6"I'm getting bettah" is the old man who's about to be put on the "bring out your dead" cart.
"I got better" is the line from the scene where a man claims a witch turned him into a newt. - ramenite, on 12/28/2007, -0/+5Well, in defense of older games, they actually had a manual that was worth a crap.
Older games actually had a manual you could read, that told you what you needed to know. Now, you're even lucky to get ANY manual. And if you do, it's a 10 page booklet(that's normally in at least 2 languages), that's really filled with safety warnings, and less information than those stickers on the inside of NES rental cart cases. - darklights, on 12/28/2007, -0/+5I remember playing 4D games on my 8bit computer, back in the 80s. Battlezone was 4D.
- Shaflugi, on 12/28/2007, -1/+6You could get absolutely no exercise and you still wouldn't turn into a fat slob. Blame eating McDonalds every day, not games.
- Jibberwalk, on 12/28/2007, -2/+6Dugg up! Dugg Up!!!
- moxillaq, on 12/28/2007, -1/+5I prefer wired controllers. I didn't buy wireless guitars for Guitar Hero, and I don't intend to buy wireless XBOX 360 controllers. I'm not getting out of my chair or anything. Same thing with wireless mouses. A Guild Wars run turned sour once when my batteries ran out, and now I always opt for wired when given the choice.
- darklights, on 12/28/2007, -1/+54D - fourth dimension - time. So all 3D games are actually 4D, because as time passes, objects move and change. Unless its a static 3D render, but then that wouldnt make for a very fun game.
Now I'm not sure if chris9902 was spouting crap or joking. - cclarke4, on 12/28/2007, -1/+5Its kinda funny how a list that has nothing more than two legitimate points that are on topic gets to the top of digg. Unfortunately digg has become a haven for little kids with top X lists that are completely ridiculous.
Ohhh, I have an idea, how about a top ten list of bad digg postings? This one would be on it for sure! - christianboutin, on 12/28/2007, -1/+47) Open worlds have existed in PC RPGs ever since well... ever since they existed. Ultima I anyone?
3) PC gaming has had that, again, since they started. And quite frankly, I can recall quite a few times I've been running around for pretty much half an hour, dodging monsters and scrambling like crazy to save just so I could go to sleep. Plain wrong.
2) Again, PC has had that for years.
1) Ditto
Should've been titled 7 Ways Modern Game _Consoles_ are Spoiling us, or 7 Ways Console Games are slowly catching on to their PC equivalent. - warbird, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3Wireless, modern? NES had that in 1989.
ref.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NES_Satellite - ramenite, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3HAHA, those were the days. Keeping around old mouse drivers, because they used 14k less memory. And that 14k was needed!
- dood, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3Or really, blame eating anything to excess. You don't need 1500 calorie meals unless you're some kind of professional athlete.
- GorfTron, on 12/28/2007, -2/+5#1 - No more DOS memory issues. No more conventional memory, TSR's, HIMEM.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, XMS, LIM, Extended memory ... bla bla bla
- SharkyTech, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3Agreed, the fogeyness of it could have been left out and the article simply name "7 great improvements in gaming"
