- angrytortilla, on 11/09/2009, -2/+109I hope these 7 achievements involve Dragon Age, because for some reason I can't think about anything else!
- sorepheet, on 11/10/2009, -1/+48True story: attempted Gamer's Day Achievement for Mega Man 9. Beat the game for the 5th and final time 12 hours later. However the clock struck midnight, therefore a new day- no achievement!!! I thought I had 24 hours to do it! I haven't turned the game on since... brutal disappointment.
- capheine, on 11/10/2009, -6/+35Achievements: artificially increasing replay value since 2005
- AngryDeuce, on 11/10/2009, -1/+28Online only achievements are *****. Try and get some in Medal of Honor: Airborne, for instance, or Army of Two...ain't ***** happening.
If Devs can't guarantee that a game is going to be played online a reasonable amount of time after it's released (at least a year, but more like 2-3) then they shouldn't have online achievements. Army of Two was dead 6 months after I bought the thing...Farcry 2 about 9 months. Lame... - dlan4327, on 11/10/2009, -3/+28ALL GLORY TO DRAGONA- HYPNOTOAD!
- mywhitenoise, on 11/10/2009, -2/+26I know this is an article on "Achievements", but almost all of those aren't as hard as getting the Warhawk Award, or some of the trophies on Wipeout. That GRAW one looks like a pain in the ass, and I'll agree with the author...online achievements suck ass.
This article would be a lot better without the first 2 paragraphs for each game. - sugarazor, on 11/10/2009, -1/+22I wouldn't call it "artificial," achievements are a fun reason to go back through a game and explore parts of it that you may have otherwise skipped over.
- Nateon, on 11/10/2009, -2/+21I thought this was going to be about stupidly easy achievements when I saw the title. For instance, I recently got Beatles Rockband and got an achievement for calibrating the game to my tv. I got an ironic golf clap from the people watching in the room.
- iDiggYa, on 11/10/2009, -3/+20Dragon Age to the front, Dragon Age to the back.
Dragon Age on left, Dragon Age on right.
I'm surrounded by Dragon Age, help!! - maximo309, on 11/11/2009, -1/+17aww c'mon not even a mention about that friggin' gnome in HL2 E2?
- JohnA, on 11/10/2009, -1/+16The one that cracked me up was the first achievement in The Simpson's Game:
Press START to Play (5G)
http://www.xbox360achievements.org/game/the-simpso ... - jipijipijipi, on 11/10/2009, -2/+15Good idea for an article, but the writing style was painful, or maybe i'm just tired...
- mattyboy555, on 11/10/2009, -1/+14Online achievements blow!
Sort of related: Here is how to get rid of that annoying Dragon Age ad
http://digg.com/mods/How_to_remove_the_Digg_Dragon ... - FredFredrickson, on 11/10/2009, -2/+13It's a meta game within a game. There's nothing artificial about it.
- Eric1285, on 11/11/2009, -1/+12I think you mean "could have"...
It's okay, lots of people fail that one. - timfitz99, on 11/11/2009, -0/+11That Dead Rising one has to be the most ridiculous. 14 hours in real life... no save... and you can't just camp Frank out somewhere and walk away, you have to keep feeding him and fighting zombies THE WHOLE TIME.
- r0bi, on 11/10/2009, -1/+11I like the idea of achievements, in theory. When you have unlockables through achievements like in TF2 it just creates achievement servers and it no longer serves its purpose.
- tjstarks, on 11/11/2009, -1/+11"Most of them are too hard, and some are just downright difficult"
what the hell? - GregLoire, on 11/10/2009, -1/+10There's an art to creating good achievements, which is often ignored. Ridiculously hard achievements can be cool if they're hard for the RIGHT REASONS. Requiring the player to complete the same difficult task 5 times in one day is not a compelling reason for something to be difficult.
- NeoTechni, on 11/11/2009, -1/+102. 7 Day Survivor - Dead Rising - MS never should have allowed this one. Takes a MINIMUM of 14 hours in real time, and thats IF you dont mess up. While risking RROD
Sony/MS never should have allowed:
-Killzone 2's, staying in the top 1% of all players for an entire week
-Any trophy/achievement requiring massive grinding. ie: Playing 1000 hours online. Some of us do have lives or other games. Resistance 2's kill a hundred thousand will take me a minimum of a thousand hours, it's my last trophy, so I gave up the game. Trophies that stupid just piss me off.
I dont mind trophies for beating a game on hard (except Killzone, which lied to you about how close you were to getting it, and thus I sold it back to EB when I found out. Only game I ever sold) I've done it for Uncharted 2, Resistance 2, and Dead Space.
But grinding/repetition is the most annoying game element ever, and any developer who ever thinks of using it in their game needs to be locked in a room with a conveyor belt floor, and robot arms that spank the hell out of the idiot for eternity and see how he likes repetition (I'm looking at you too Phantom Hourglass) - omgwtflawl, on 11/10/2009, -1/+9The content is interesting but the writing in the article sucks. It could really use a once-over from an editor.
- Pyroteq, on 11/11/2009, -0/+8I agree with this. For example, I think it's 10,000 games of Gears of War or something like that? Yes, because I'm totally going to play 10,000 games of GoW now aren't I?
In my opinion games should do what CoD does. Put a whole bunch of achievements in single player/co-op and then make online achievements separate that can unlock new skins and stuff like that. - NeoTechni, on 11/11/2009, -1/+8Artificial or not, they're fun.
- Awwzm, on 11/10/2009, -2/+9One of my proudest video game moments is getting all 12 achievements in Hexic HD.
- FredFredrickson, on 11/10/2009, -3/+9Achievements in multiplayer simply do not mix. Even if it doesn't get as extreme as TF2, where whole maps are created to help you get achievements, it's still crappy for everyone else when one or two players decide to stop helping the team win and instead play just for achievements.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/10/2009, -3/+9yeah, but what about the rest of the achievements?
Come back when you've hit 100% of the hammer-ons/pull offs without strumming on Dig A Pony, and Dear Prudence. Let me know if you score 100% on "I Saw Her Standing There" on Expert Bass, and 100% on "Helter Skelter" on Expert Drums. Let's not forget those ***** "get all possible tripple fabs!" achievement. Beatles Rock Band is brutal in that aspect. - JDLamb88, on 11/10/2009, -1/+7Thank you for explaining to me, a person who reads articles about video games, what an achievement is.
- nepidae, on 11/10/2009, -2/+8If you had gotten that achievement would you really have played it since then anyway?
- JonnyJ, on 11/10/2009, -1/+7How about we list some honorable mentions, heres mine;
Gears of war II- Seriously 2.0 - get 100,000 kills
Gta 4 - Kill 200 pidgeons. might not sound too hard, but it is
Fight Night Round 4 - ANY online championship belt. Between the cheap gameplay, and the fact that only one person can hold the belt makes this achievement outrageous - Oddish, on 11/11/2009, -1/+6I got to the end once by pure luck, and then proceeded to shoot the hostage in the face. Now THAT'S a FAIL! :'-(
- AngryDeuce, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4It's less about the number, and more about the fact that big components are dead a very short time after release. On the PC, there's enthusiasts playing games from 10+ years ago online (like the Decent games, or the Civ games), but with the 360, unless it's COD or Halo, you got a few months to play online before you rot at the "finding match" screen for hours. Hell, GTA IV team deathmatch was all but dead last time I tried to get a match going with a friend of mine, and that's a game I never thought would die off online...
- Zarokima, on 11/11/2009, -1/+5Yeah, but the good thing about TF2's achievements is that a lot of them can be achieved just through playing the game normally without needing an achievement server or anything. I managed to get all the Halloween event achievements just playing with the usual group for about three hours, though we did institute a policy of "If you get a Ghastly Gibus, you must equip it on any character you use."
- JesusHimself, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3Little rocket man achievement in HL2 EPI2, that achievement ruined it for me :(
- crashingechelon, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3I don't mind multiplayer achievements as long as they're realistic to get. A lot of times what I've noticed from games that offer realistic online ones they're mainly for features or other new things that they want you to try out. Other than that some are off the wall balls to get.
- Lymphocyte, on 11/11/2009, -1/+4From his email handle, I'm going to guess that English isn't the author's native language. Kudos to him for writing an article that made Digg's main page - I'm not sure I could do that in my native language. He just earned an achievement that'd make me cry.
- Valyn, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3Was expecting Trials HD, but these were pretty insane too. The final achievement in Trials HD is insane. Last time I looked (maybe a week ago) there were 12 people in the world that had it.
- LimeParrot, on 11/10/2009, -1/+4High Mile Club - tried to beat for ~10 hours over a few days (N.B. each run through is around a minute, do the math) - and I couldn't. Clearly I fail.
- MrFisty, on 11/11/2009, -2/+5I sincerely hope those responsible for the marketing of Dragon Age take note of all the negative reception on Digg and learn TO NEVER DO IT AGAIN!!
There's a vast difference between making me aware of and desire something versus shoving it in my face to a point it becomes intrusive, annoying and downright off-putting. - fohf, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3I think the trick is you load the last level and just beat that 5 times unless they've patched it...
- Eric1285, on 11/11/2009, -1/+4It took me about 3 hours of trying but I finally beat Mile High Club last night (only got COD:MW a couple weeks ago). I'll admit it, I had to watch a YouTube video but there's not a whole lot there to help you...you definitely need some luck on your side.
I don't know what I would have done if I had shot the VIP...I'd probably be looking for a new TV right now. - MrFisty, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3I got all the achievements out of COD2 and some of those missions on veteran were beyond infuriating. Storming the house in Caen and holding Hill 400 were beyond mental.
I remember getting stuck on Caen after a billion tries and to a point where I can still hear that high pitched death noise and rattle off the war quotes by heart. It was a pretty satisfying 1000. - shauncullen, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3Its a FPS on PC, but Achievements are on 360, so your point is taken.
- Oddish, on 11/11/2009, -1/+3I think beating "World At War" on veteran deserves a mention here. Storming the Reichstag was not walk in the park.
- MonkeyNews, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2Oh man - when I first got to the VIP in veteran I shot the guy in the leg and it failed the mission. It had to be a headshot. FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!
I tried again and managed it - definitely the hardest achievement ever for me. - schrankage, on 11/10/2009, -2/+4that guy writes like a second-grader.
- fohf, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2no you can't pause and if any of your controllers have the batteries die and the xbox guide pops up it ruins the achievement too.
- timfitz99, on 11/11/2009, -1/+3Endless Setlist is rough, but you can pause it, can't you?
- inactive, on 11/11/2009, -1/+3sure you could. Caring less would be not bothering to click on a thread that you KNOW is about achievements and making a comment.
- Wrathernaut, on 11/11/2009, -1/+3Explain to me again why making a number next to your fake name increase is a requirement for enjoyment? Let the gamers have online and offline opportunities for psychological validation for their hobby if they want. There's nothing that says you have to do them.
- MonkeyNews, on 11/12/2009, -1/+2FarCry 2 multiplayer is a pile of ***** - which is ***** tragic because the map editor is so beautiful.
