- zerocool1990, on 06/14/2008, -81/+25So picking on GTA IV is what passes as cool these days ? Give me a break.
I mean I've heard these exact same reasons hundreds of times since the game got out.- Borgcube, on 06/14/2008, -13/+54First post and already fanboyism. Oh, the humanity...

- eddie72, on 06/15/2008, -9/+12I doubt he's guilty of fanboyism. Most of the players of GTA IV don't have the issues described in the article. So considering this he is refuting the claims of the article. Not really sure if the article is serious or not though considering it's from Cracked.com

- Guol, on 06/15/2008, -2/+12So, the people in the city act more realistically. Big deal...
This game is waaay too over-rated..I agree with the article in saying that the actual gameplay gets repetitive and isn't upto scratch...- tehjabba, on 06/16/2008, -0/+0Wait a minute, there's every kind of driving gameplay possible in all kinds of vehicles, same goes for the shooting missions and then there's the mixtures of the 2. hidden things to do/collect/jump/shoot, there's mini games and a vast array of multiplayer games each with all kinds of customisation. All this is wrapped up in a huge immersive storyline in a highly detailed free roaming, do whatever the hell you like sandbox environment.
I'm sure when people played it for 60 + hours then this got a little repetitive, but then again they played it for 60+ hours.
Tell me about all these games that are less repetitive, more complete than this one is Grid? Halo? I think the list will be pretty short. If more games had this kind of ambition and quality then they're wouldn't be months on end when i'm waiting for the next decent game.
The only reason i can think of why people are whining about this game is because they've finally finished it and have nothing better to do. That or they just want to be seen as controversial.

- HumanRecall, on 06/15/2008, -0/+3Actually the same reason were for GTA 1 through Vice City to San Andreas
- CrazyChair, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I hadn't really noticed any of the "problems" the article mentioned. My only real gripe with the game was that I didn't like having to play it on a console. Auto-aim is so clunky and limited... Give me a mouse any day.
Gameplay in most games (even the "greatest" games) is repetitive. GTA games seem to stand out more because the driving from point a to point b thing, eats up a lot of time... Especially when you do it so much in a large world. GTA4 seemed to completely fix this problem for me however. Whenever I didn't feel like driving around, I would just take a taxi and skip the driving sequence. It gave money somewhat of a use, and it let me just get on with the fun parts when I didn't feel like driving to the other side of the map. I could also use it to quickly go to ammunation, a restaurant etc.
- Borgcube, on 06/14/2008, -13/+54First post and already fanboyism. Oh, the humanity...
- RedhookESB, on 06/14/2008, -0/+2I completely agree with leasing their environment how other companies lease their engine. There are so many possibilities for different types of games within Liberty City. This is shown by the creativity of multiplayer hosts who create their own game types and rules which are often great ideas, but limited to the responsibility of other players to play by the "imaginary" rules of gameplay. For previous versions of GTA on the PC mods accomplish this and provides no money for RS, so they may as well make some bank on it by letting other companies build on their technology.
- navster15, on 06/14/2008, -4/+198The title is a tad bit sensationalist, but the article certainly bring up some valuable points. I would add one more complaint to that list and that would be the shoddy online networking. Half the time I try to join an online match I am inexplicably kicked out of the game and have to return to single player (and enjoy a minute long loading screen to boot). I have no problems playing any other games online on my 360, so it leads me to conclude that Rockstar really dropped the ball on this one.
- AzzidReign, on 06/14/2008, -5/+11Yeah, everyone just seemed to not care how bad the XBL connection was.
- supermanred, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2Nope sorry dude, works fine.
- Waynerz99, on 06/15/2008, -1/+16I very rarely comment on digg stories, but this one I felt compelled to. I've had these exact same connection problems and regardless of what forum I post on, people tell me its my connection. Hope some of the members from gamespot/gamefaqs are reading this.
- doubledmateo, on 06/15/2008, -0/+18No, it most definitely is NOT your connection. Nearly everyone experiences the glitches in Multiplay. Happens on both PS3 and 360.
- jett, on 06/15/2008, -2/+4Maybe I'm just lucky but I have not yet experienced the connection problems you and other people have mentioned. I am from the Philippines (for those who do not know their geography it's a group of islands southeast of China) and when playing GTA IV multiplayer my co-players are usually from the US.
I do experience lag while playing NBA 2k8 or Fight Night on Live but the GTA IV multiplayer experience has been good so far.
- illt, on 06/15/2008, -8/+16i don' tknow, this is the first GTA i've played since the 2d releases...and i had a ***** blast.
The radio commentary, ring tones, soundtrack, brucie....i'd find my self laughing out loud at all the silly details.
All the small little details really made my gaming experience.
worst game ever made? it's the most fun i've had on a console in ages.- JakeyG14, on 06/15/2008, -0/+20Worst GREAT game ever made.
- jawagas, on 06/15/2008, -3/+1Agreed, this game has brought much joy and happiness into my life. I haven't owned a console and I recently purchased my 360 purely for GTA4(perhaps a lil for Lego Star wars as well), even with the valid points made in the article I have yet to regret it for a moment.
- Gizza, on 06/16/2008, -1/+3You missed out then, because Vice City has by far been the best one so far.

- samuraiswordsmn, on 06/15/2008, -2/+1Although I've heard a lot about this issue with the random people I meet and play with online, the problems with failed connections don't happen to me or my circle of friends that live nearby. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the problem doesn't exist - Usually if I'm playing a ranked game, I'll see a few people I don't know drop out or lag all over the place, but generally, the connection issues are not as bad (for me) as they are for others. Oh well, who cares about me anyway.
As for the "glitches", there are not that many, but the ones I know about are actually pretty fun to mess around with (Like the physics "bitchsmack" that occurs when you drive into a swingset and get your car thrown across the island). - rpgmaker, on 06/15/2008, -0/+21Silly me thinking that this kind of usability glitches were suppose to be revealed in the gamespot reviews and the like. My bad.
- JettaMan, on 06/15/2008, -0/+4Well, I can't wait to play it. I've been doing nothing but Oblivion on the Xbox 360 for the past few months and need something modern age. Bioshock and Mass Effect are also coming up.

- rhepark, on 06/15/2008, -6/+0no offense, but who plays GTA multiplayer? purely a gimmick feature.
- sevenalive, on 06/15/2008, -0/+5gta multiplayer is badass. There is nothing like playing car jack city or the kenny petrovick gametype.
It's the most fun i had playing an online game since TF2. There was this one game where i was playing kenny, we had to get drugs and deliver them. It was a race against me and this 1 other guy for first place. He already picked up the last package, so i quickly got a rpg and the one of the fastest cars in the game, i blew by him, got enough spare time to get set up at the drop location. He comes rolling in and i blow his ass up, steal the drugs and win the game. He was screaming and ***** and i was LOLing my ass off. You cannot tell me that this game isn't fun online.- Greengoo, on 06/15/2008, -0/+3You speak like a drunken second grader, but you speak the truth.
- noerrorsfound, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1A gimmick feature? Right, it's such a gimmick that in the previous GTA games where it wasn't a feature at all, people hacked the feature together: http://sa-mp.com

- miscAU, on 06/15/2008, -0/+3well this will be the advantage of pc release i guess, patching, mods and both rockstar and user generated content.
the other thing im sad about is the removal of some of the RPG elements, even if they werent crucial it was still a fun element that entertains some people.
- miscAU, on 06/15/2008, -0/+3well this will be the advantage of pc release i guess, patching, mods and both rockstar and user generated content.
- artofwar420, on 06/15/2008, -2/+4These are fine and fair criticisms, and as a consumer I agree, to a point (I haven't found many bugs), but as an apprentice of game development, I now have a different perspective that the writer might not. And I can summarize my opinion in a sentence:
WHAT ROCKSTAR DID WAS AN INSANE TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT. (It's fun as hell too)
No piece of software is 100% free of bugs, some come crazy close though.
And things are not as easy to fix as the writer thinks, all the money in the world won't magically fix things, time and work are needed too. To me it seems that Rockstar could not afford to wait past the launch date. Blame Take 2, blame whoever, but that's how business is, just look at Haze, Timeshift, Quake Wars or Blacksite.
FEW developers have the luxury to stay in development forever, Blizzard is one of them.- dronkmunk, on 06/15/2008, -1/+2When GTA3 was unleashed upon the world in the fall of 2001, it was a pure, unadulterated exercise in nihilism. Players had the choice to main and murder their fellow man, guilty and innocent alike, or be a Samaritan and go around town taking injured people to the hospital or extinguishing lethal car-fires. But the key word was always choice. It was the main draw for me atleast. It was the first time a casual gamer like me saw a game where you could actually go here OR go there, and anywhere in between. Another thing that drew me in was the story. The lead character in GTA3 is basically an errand boy for various criminal organizations around the city, oftentimes at war with each other. He was also a mute; perhaps created that way to help the player identify more with the misanthropic lead Claude Speed, a character who remained completely nameless until San Andreas came out in 2004.
But while I played on and wordlessly shot, beat and ran down all of my rivals and all of the sad sacks that happened to be in my path, it became apparent to me that Grand Theft Auto 3 was, at it's heart, a metaphor about the underworld. It was too smart to just be about violence. It was about getting where you needed to be, no matter what it took to get there. Both in terms of the surface area of the map and in terms of the criminal hierarchy. This has always been the core of the GTA series, but how they have chosen to flesh this idea out has taken some very interesting turns, especially where it pertains to each installments lead character.
The next installment was the inimitable Vice City, which after playing through all of the 3D Grand Theft Autos, takes the crown. Now that is just my opinion, but allow me to break it down. The aesthetics, the atmosphere of Rockstar Games' version of 1980's Miami was perfectly captured. This is thanks in no small way to the flawless soundtrack, which captured most if not all of the different corners of 80's music. The cars the beaches, the clothes, pedestrian dialog, the night clubs the commercials etc. It all just rang true.
It was also a first for the GTA series: our lead character had a name. On top of that Tommy Vercetti actually talked. And had a personality. Well, somewhat. I mean he was basically a heartless sociopath like his predecessor, but he had friends. He trusted people, and people trusted him. He did what he had to do that in order to get to the top of the Vice City dog pile. Shooting, gunning down and chainsawing everyone he had to, and even some he didn't.
He also had a cellphone. This was a first for the GTA series. Being able to accept jobs through the phone added a layer of convenience to the criminal lifestyle, even if the player wasn't yet able to make outgoing calls. It would be a while before the series matured to that level; however the next installment San Andreas still made great strides in adding dimensions to Grand Theft Auto, as well as further humanizing its lead character.
Carl Johnson, like Vercetti before him, talked. He also had a tragic backstory about losing his mother to the constant drug fueled gang activity that ravaged his home town of Los Santos. After returning to the state of San Andreas from a long hiatus in Liberty City (doing god knows what), Carl was reunited with his brother and together they transformed their rag-tag street gang from the bottom of the Los Santos food chain into a state-wide syndicate.
New elements reminiscent of a role-playing game began to emerge in GTA. Players had to take care of themselves. Being too fat or too malnourished could impact your performance as a criminal. Carl also had the ability to "date." Taking girls on dates had numerous benefits. Getting someone to like you could mean new outfits, perks like keeping weapons after dying, keys to the girl's whip, and of course hot coffee.
Creating in game characters that the player was discouraged from killing, much less characters we had to like, was not what people expected or wanted from Grand Theft Auto. But the game was an enourmous sucess and is still considered by many a classic today.Carl Johnson also had a cell phone. An addition to accepting missions with it, he could also accept dates with his girl friends, and later in the game would even receive hilariously desperate prank calls from crazy ex-girlfriends. You were a human, a member of society now. And you were tasked with managing the life of a gangster. A lot of people balked at the "RPG" elements that were introduced, but I thought that even if it wasn't really implemented in the best way, that this was a compellingly brilliant direction for the series.
So we go from a ruthless sociopathic mute, to a slightly more charming sociopath, to a child of the streets with a family who seeming happens to lead a criminal lifestyle. With each installment, the Grand Theft Auto series has taken steps to grow up, and it to give humanistic touches to its protagonists, while remaining a part of the open-world "sandbox" genre. Never has this been more true than with Grand Theft Auto IV.
Players were to no longer have control of their appearance, and were given its most human-ish protagonist in its history as a videogame; perhaps in the history of any game, ever. I have not played nearly enough non-GTA games to know for sure, but I have heard it said. It's not like anyone is reading this far anyways. Penis.
Niko Bellic is a fresh off the boat immigrant, and through his eyes we experience Liberty City again 7 years later from our first visit there in GTA 3. This time, the main character is given a cell phone early on in the game, and with it, he can accept missions just like Tommy V and Carl. This time though, the player is able to call anyone in his phone book at any time, as well as various other phone numbers about the city. There are also a range of activities available to the player in GTA IV. But these are not the activities players were used to. Trotting people around the city in a cab, rescuing the sick and the weak in an ambulance, putting out deadly car fires; the option to do these things is for the most part gone.
Instead, your options in this newest iteration are watching tv, going to comedy clubs, taking tours of the immaculate skyline, and shooting pool, playing darts, and bowling. Its as if the developers just sat around thinking of ways that the player could just spend time as a citizen.
Gone are your misanthropic and nihilistic urges. Now your success depends on how human you can be, how much you can get people to actually like you, by spending time with them. Sure, its all for the cause of being a more effective gangster; making friends with certain people will give you easier access to weapons and bombs, but still. No more mayhem, no more killing just to kill. The option is there, but from the way that Niko Bellic was illustrated, murderous rampages just feel...weird. And out of character.
While reading the comical blogs and spam emails within the game is a fun, not to mention the tv shows, its not why we play GTA. I'm sorry to say it, but its true. People do not search out GTA for the story, although the way Rockstar has weaved their story throughout their vast underworld universe is very impressive. People play it for the blood lust and the insane spontaneous moments that happen in between cutscenes. Grand Theft Auto has always been great because it let the player have the chance to feel inhuman for once.A lot of us, we pick the game up to feed the our darkside. Grand Theft Auto IV made a lot of light shine through onto that darkside, even at the expense of some of the game play.
All of my GTA heads: Does this sit well with you? While evolution is always a good thing, is maturity something you ever thought you would ever see or wanted to see in GTA? Or is GTA IV hands-down the greatest game evar? Should I just shut-up and stop reposting *****? Speak on it. Personally I thought it was all in all about a 4.5 out of 5, the same score I would give San Andreas. The reason it got scored so high is because its the first official GTA to have multiplayer, which I thought they did a great job with. Next time though I think maybe they should not try so hard to be taken seriously, and bring back the FUN side missions, even if they are exactly the same as the old games. Then maybe, just maybe, we could be playing a 10/10 game this time next year.

- passdoubt, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1I had this very complaint when I first got the game. I bitched to my buddy who works for Rockstar, and after looking into it he had me forward some ports. I was really pissed about every game working online except GTA, but this did fix it: http://live.tommccann.net/
I'm not saying any other connection-related complaint isn't valid, but if you're frustrated about not being able to connect, at least give the above URL a shot!

- KingLeo, on 06/15/2008, -0/+10It's not contradictory at all. It is simply saying that GTA4 is one of the greatest games ever made, but when compared to the others in the list of greatest games... it's the least great.
- Vich, on 06/15/2008, -1/+1I'm pretty sure when he says it's the worst game ever made, then mentions good features of the game and rambles on about how great the world is AND says that the problems aren't enough to make him stop playing AND THEN says he'd give it a good score it's kind of contradictory, that or the title is just blatantly wrong.
"I don't mean to imply that the flaws outweigh the perks--they don't. I won't stop playing it over these issues and I'm not suggesting you do either, both because the city and what it could have been are too tempting, and because the few times where everything does go right, it is nothing short of amazing."

- EDmAN, on 06/14/2008, -34/+26I didn't buy the game because I was tired of GTA after the first one. The freedom that GTA exhibits is cool, but other than that it is a stupid game. GTA IV reviews were nothing but hype that the first few hours with the game like that always spawns, but after playing them for a while, they are a waste of time, with no real gratification. I know there are probably only 5 people who agree with me, but give me MGS4 with an intriguing story line, and keep your GTA games.

- walugi, on 06/15/2008, -1/+7Have you guys ever completed a GTA game?
Lame- EDmAN, on 06/15/2008, -0/+2Yep, I played the first one and the second one. I like games that I can sit down and feel like I've accomplished something after 15mins-1hour of gameplay. Games like GTA4 and Oblivion are not my cup of tea you might say. They are huge time wasters. If it takes me 6 months to beat a game, that's okay, but I want to know that there is something I need to do next to accomplish the goal. I don't have the time to waste my life. A couple of years ago I beat Dragon Quest VIII, a great game, but I only played it for at most an 1hour and 1/2 a day, maybe two to three times a week. It took me forever to beat the game, but I stuck with it because of the story and gameplay. I would play GTAIV a few times and get bored with it, there is no story to keep me excited about finishing the game. MGS4 is intriguing, and I know what I'm supposed to do next. Games don't have to be completely linear for me to enjoy them, but they have to have a better purpose than drive by shootings and killing cops. For me a story needs to be there, or a goal worth completing. GTAIV is a mindless game of killing sprees and stupidity.
- doubledmateo, on 06/15/2008, -0/+3If you're playing for a good storyline than you're 100% justified, but so far I'm enjoying MGS4 less than I expected because the gameplay is so limited that it stifles a bit.
Some folks like a good, polished linear game, and others like a more freeform, 100s of hours sandbox game. I think they both have a place.- MechaFalcon, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1The gameplay in MGS4 is stifled? You can do everything you could in MGS3 plus more, save interrogating CQCed enemies (which I do miss, actually).
Unless of course you mean it's stifled in comparison to other games, in which case I'm still confused.- doubledmateo, on 06/19/2008, -0/+0Perhaps I worded things wrong. What I meant is that the gameplay sections in some of the acts were really short and didn't allow you to play as much. If anything this is a credit to how excellent the game is to play because it just feels too short. Granted all the MGS games have been this way (lots of cinematics, after playing short pieces of gameplay.) but it felt more apparent in MGS4.
Having finished the game and playing back through, I'm noticing tons of things I didn't before. I'm skipping the cinematics and really exploring the levels and am pretty dang impressed. Has anyone found the crop circle in act II? Or the handprints of all the developers (you can save a handprint camo there.)
The gameplay offers tons of different ways to play, and controls very well. I just wanted more situations like the first two acts in the rest of the game, because by the end I felt frustrated by a lack of meaty gameplay. I'm fine with long cinematics, I loved them all. I just felt like the last acts were a bit short on gameplay.

- rpgmaker, on 06/15/2008, -1/+1Agreed. After I played GTA I and II the GTAIII was a complete overhaul but at the bottom it was the same, the same missions and side-missions. I played GTAIII and enjoyed it (playing the same old missions on a 3D environment was cool) but after I finished it I was left wondering "how could they make this any more different than that?". Playing the sequels I standed corrected. The missions were the same. I've always liked the gameplay so I didn't bother about the little to no modifications to it. Is a good game nonetheless.

- ep53, on 06/15/2008, -0/+2Its got more detail than GTA SA, BUT the map itself if tiny and you cant do as many things, e.g. There are no bicylces, airplanes, parachutes, Katana swords, chainsaws, jet pack, theres no Rhino Tank, you cant change your physical appearence (Eating too much, or going to the gym), You CAN enter the buildings BUT once you get inside they are all the same. . - Hexogen, on 06/15/2008, -7/+22I thought San Andreas was better. You had territory control, which made me want to play the game through. The environment seemed much more expansive, even if it wasn't as detailed. You had bicycles, and who didn't like gunning people down from your bike. You could be the fattest turd in the whole hood. And you didn't have to take care of your friends like some sort of tamagotchi.
For all the hype, it doesn't feel like 4 brought much to the table.- 335io07, on 06/15/2008, -6/+3I didn't like the self customization parts of san andreas. Good game tho.
- doubledmateo, on 06/15/2008, -1/+5Wasn't he talking about the way it controls?
- powatom, on 06/15/2008, -0/+4Yeah the San Andreas environment had a LOT more going for it, deserts, forests, trailer parks and of course the cities themselves, each one completely different from the others - it just felt like a bigger game altogether. I prefer GTA4 though, despite its flaws (The cover system can be annoying but overall I think it works really well), and given the choice I'd probably stick with it every time. It's just disappointing that they didn't stick with the varied environment that SA had.

- rupertd, on 06/15/2008, -1/+9Not a huge fan of the COD4 controls system really. Maybe its my insane CS background, but COD4 firefights feel...disconnected from the beautiful world in which they are set. I think the Source engine has FPS controls down pat.
- Ridesabike, on 06/15/2008, -3/+0All of the above, this is GTA4, not COD4 or Assasins Creed.
If you want to play an FPS game, play an FPS game. Stop complaining that this game is different from others.
I know that I'm probably going to be buried for this, which is sad.- ANT1138, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Why can't it be both? Why can't we have the option to play in first or third person?
- WallyAnti, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1THANK YOU!!!. Gunsights should completely replace target cursor aiming.
The GTA controls have always sucked bc you cannot tell wtf you are really aiming at in 3rd person. I can't count the number of times I've died bc of the monkeying around the game does with my view when taking cover. Attention game makers STOP SCREWING WITH MY CAMERA ANGLES!!! To do so in deathmatch is unforgivable. This game could have been so awesome in multiplayer mode. It's still fun but a very frustrating experience.- twinegarden, on 06/15/2008, -1/+1In my opinion, the only 3rd person shooter that has tight control is Gears of War.
- tehjabba, on 06/16/2008, -0/+0No, lets not have yet another FPS game, especially not on consoles. They just need to iron out the few niggles and aspects people are frustrated by for the next game. A story driven game like GTA which centres around a main character works better in 3rd person.

- totorototoro, on 06/15/2008, -6/+61"Rockstar made a city worthy of a great game."
This is very true. I do wish that either:
a) Rockstar moves beyond the same old GTA mold, and uses their talents to explore new genres with the same attention of detail the put into the city.
b) Someone else licenses their city and makes a truly great game.- fusuke31, on 06/15/2008, -11/+6Yes, the Liberty City environment is simply amazing. However, just imagine what they could have come up with if they weren't restricted to a dual layer DVD?

- Tebixan, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1There is a sex shop somewhere near the middle of Algonquin, where you can pick up a dildo and throw it like a rock or bottle. So you can in fact kill someone with a dildo in GTA4 if you want.

- phreek23, on 06/15/2008, -11/+71The novelty and hype of GTAIV wore off for me after about 2 weeks. After that, I started to realize all the flaws and repetitive nature of the game, and it really become quite boring.
- GregIsLegend, on 06/15/2008, -35/+59I completely disagree.
True, most of the missions follow the same formula. Drive to point A, locate point B and take out subject C.
However, the narrative was just so engrossing and every mission was so well acted and intertwined with the story that I really didn't even notice the repetition. It's a video game when it comes right down to it, but the acting, story telling and sense of humor and drama made me forget that.
Also, I ran into very few glitches.- psi0nicgh0st, on 06/15/2008, -9/+2I didn't think it was all that engrossing, I thought GTA3 was alot more interesting personally
- MasterGrief, on 06/15/2008, -0/+8I think it just comes down to what kind of crime stories interest you. GTA 3 was very much a story about rags-to-riches, but GTA 4 was, as one reviewer put it, rags-to-slightly-better-rags. Because of this, among other things, GTA 4 is a far more believable story than GTA 3 and I can understand why that would turn some people away from it.
- UltX, on 06/15/2008, -0/+5GTA 3 was not about rags-to-riches at all, it was about cold blooded revenge.
GTA-SA was more of a 'Rags to Riches' story. - MasterGrief, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1Actually, yeah, I think you're right. You don't do a whole lot of personal moving up in GTA 3 as the story progresses, you just get a huge amount of weaponry. Thank you for calling me on that, I'm not sure why it hadn't occurred to me earlier.

- GregIsLegend, on 06/15/2008, -2/+9Really? I am admittedly only 70% done with the game, so maybe the quality of the acting will suddenly dip, but from what I've seen all of the characters are so well written and bursting with personality. Mikhail, Brucie, Packie, Roman, Ray, Little Jacob and so many others, are just so vibrantly written and acted out that I forget that I'm playing a video game and feel like I'm acting in a movie.- deltadestroyed, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1Obvious marketing troll is obvious.

I bought the game after exams (first GTA game for me). It was fun for about two weeks, but then I sold it because it just got way too repetitive. - BrewBeau, on 06/15/2008, -0/+5The game did get repetitive, but I liked that the missions didn't just get increasingly more difficult each time. - xsquirrel378x, on 06/15/2008, -5/+3I never even made it past the first two islands. I didn't think it was bad by any means, I just think GTA has started to wear off on me. It takes like a full 5 minutes just to load it up on my PS3 and it just never seems like I feel like playing it.
On top of everything else the neighborhoods are too hard to navigate for me this time around, driving is way harder than previous games and I'm really sick of people calling me every five minutes.- Ramenamen, on 06/15/2008, -0/+5At least unlock the third island. The mission preceding unlocking it (Three Leaf Clover) is the single best mission in the game.
- NCg8r, on 06/16/2008, -0/+0The circle button ignores calls coming in... The only problem with that is when you're trying to do something with the "X" button and accidentally answer. Even then you can just disregard whatever the person is saying.

Seemed like one of the few I wouldn't have minded doing again, since it did seem like more fun than I had, since I got it done pretty quickly. - shyampoo, on 06/15/2008, -0/+4Four Leaf Clover was amazing. ***** you Roman. I already have your taxi's, I don't want to drive all the damn way to a different island while i'm in the middle of a mission to take you out to dinner. And stop ***** calling me in the middle of missions you son of a bitch, if I press a by accident I can't ***** run when you do that. - bj00rn, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1Oh, sorry, I mean to write "the vocal minority", you're right, that's an important distinction...
Anyway, while I kind of miss some of the things you got to do in GTASA which is not in GTAIV, some of the greatest games in history is repetitive by nature, like f.ex. Tetris.
Anything can be broken down into simplifications, that's not difficult at all. "Life" f.ex.; Basically only thing we do is eat, sleep and breathe, repeat... But we all know there's a little more to it than that.. I hope..
More variety is only a good thing, but It's important to retain a little perspective instead of going all-in just to make a point. I mean, compared to most games, GTAIV is still one of the best.
However, I have to agree that it's easy to get burnt out quickly in GTAIV, I mean, I've been a GTA fan since the first 2D games. I still lost a little of my interest in GTAIV after a few days, and I actually stopped playing it for 2 weeks. But the funny thing is, after that break, I started playing it again, and I have been hooked since, I haven't been able to stop playing it. I notice more details every time I play it. And now I'm suddenly 60+ hours in the game, and that doesn't happen very often... I think my expectations and my previous experience with more variety hindered me to see all the other great things about GTAIV, and great things there are.

- WallyAnti, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1You can (and I would suggest) take Auto-Aim off in the in control options. Auto aim is crap. In multiplayer it is cheating and I don't care if Rockstar was stupid enough to include it in their titles. The point of FPS deathmatch and the like is to anticipate your opponents. That means you should be expected to be facing their general direction if you are paying attention.
If auto-aim worked it would make the game boring. Since it doesn't work, it just makes it frustrating. The only appeal it has is to people who probably don't like games that much anyway.
COD gunsights aiming is the perfection of FPS targeting.

- godd4242, on 06/15/2008, -3/+1Don't bitch at rockstar when you couldn't remember the sleep function, which they introduce to you in the tutorial.
- godd4242, on 06/15/2008, -1/+3Don't bitch at Rockstar because you couldn't find the sleep function on the phone, which they introduce to you in the opening tutorial.

- TiMMY8765, on 06/15/2008, -4/+22the thing that pissed me off the most was how you go ragdoll for barely even bumping a car. Sometimes even a dumpster would do this to me.
- An1malCrackers, on 06/15/2008, -4/+12I agree with some of what they're saying...but its grossly exaggerated. Seriously, I have run into only a few collision detection glitches and almost none have seriously impacted the game. The jumping system is playable as long as your watching what your doing (which you should be if you're playing). The only thing ill fully concede is getting into vehicles in multiplayer turns into some weird seizure dance around the door / seat way too often.
- BedPost, on 06/15/2008, -8/+51Yeah, not gonna lie, after I beat the game and the novelty effect wore off - I haven't played it since. It's just not fun.
Digg me down if you want, but I know there are others out there that feel the same.- GuyHersh, on 06/15/2008, -5/+8I haven't even beating the game yet because it already wore off for me. The graphics looks worse and worse the more I play it, and everything gets repetitive.
I've been averaging like 4 missions a week the last few weeks. I should beat it by the end of July at this rate.. - pantone286, on 06/15/2008, -2/+6If you beat one of them, you beat them all.
- birdcity, on 06/15/2008, -3/+1theres nothing to do after you clock it
- doubledmateo, on 06/15/2008, -1/+19Not only are they repetitive, but the difficulty as the game progresses is built up in a pretty crappy way. Instead of making the enemies get smarter, or the missions get more complex, they just throw more enemies at you, or provide you with crappy cover. You hardly ever get the gratifying feeling of overcoming a challenging obstacle. Most missions it was more of a, "okay, I'm glad that's over because that mission was really annoying."
One example is the mission where you go to beat up a bully at the park for Bernie. The guy hops on a moped, and you chase him through the park. I figured, "okay, I'll just shoot him like every other mission." but in this mission, he's invincible until some magic moment where he becomes vulnerable. Since the game never tells you this, I redid it several times and in the mean time the second you fire a weapon in the park you have crowds of people running in front of you and cop cars chasing you. I kept hitting some random person and flying off the bike and getting run over by a cop car, never realising that it's impossible to kill him until he leaves the park.
That isn't good gameplay, or mission design. That's just bad.- doctordbx, on 06/15/2008, -1/+3Agreed 100% with your comments about chasing down Bernie's hater. That nearly made me want to quit playing the whole game, because I couldn't even take him down with a rocket launcher until I thought, maybe I just have to follow him out of the park.
Then it took a couple of shots with the 'ol pistola and that was it.
Go to X, chase down Y, put a few caps in them and drive to Z. That's the most repetitive formula of the game.
Still enjoy playing it though, and despite its flaws it was worth the money, easily.

- legendxx, on 06/15/2008, -11/+12Another Top #reasons list from cracked.com? Shocking!
- DietMountainDew, on 06/15/2008, -3/+88My only complaint with GTA IV is that they removed so many features that were in San Andreas, the ability to form gangs, 2 Player mode, driving trains/planes, the sort of things that keep the game living past the mission completion... I would give up online play for these features any day.
- gfxlonghorn, on 06/15/2008, -11/+4The 2 player mode was kind of stupid. Driving trains was stupid. Planes were fun, but knowing there was that jet available from the beginning, it made it very difficult not to cheat. By 20 hours in, I had that code embedded in my brain, and the sky was raining with jets almost every few minutes. Gangs were ok I guess, but more of a mundane task( much like trying to keep friends in this one). San Andreas was took involved for its own good. The only thing I would really like back from that list is a plane. But the Jet is useless since the city is so much smaller now, so I would much rather have just a flying vehicle faster than the helicopters.
- itsthebrod, on 06/15/2008, -1/+5I was also disappointed GTA IV offered no car customizations... There were lots of little things built up over past GTA games that sort of set the standard impossibly high for a next gen title with a city as large and detailed as Liberty. But, when you look at the game progression from GTA to GTA:SA on the Xbox/PS2, you can only imagine what the subsequent titles will feature...
- sevenalive, on 06/15/2008, -5/+10SA sucked ass. The respect thing was stupid, they turned GTA into a Chia Pet. If you didn't exercise or eat or take out your GF every 5 damn minutes you will be a fat ***** with no life.
Plus i hate the dialog.- nonstop87, on 06/15/2008, -4/+3"If you didn't exercise or eat or take out your GF every 5 damn minutes you will be a fat ***** with no life."
You have no idea how many people on Digg that describes.- Millsee, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1I'm a bit chubby, but I do have a life.

the food/health/etc ***** was unbearable though - topace3000, on 06/15/2008, -0/+5YEAH MAN I remember swimming around for hours just to train my swimming skill why the ***** did they take that out im pissed ugh
Also it was basically the best train simulator ever =/ - borninda818, on 06/15/2008, -0/+9I strongly believe vice city was the best.
- KanameTosen, on 06/15/2008, -4/+19I think GTA4 is more of a "The Sum of its Parts' game. Sure there may hitches here and there, but the story is what brings it home. If you pick apart each and every flaw for what it is, then the game as a whole loses its appeal.
Take the Final Fantasy series as another example. Sure the Random Battles are tedious, but the way the story intertwines from one point to another is what makes it great.
(....I may the only person who Plays both FF and GTA.)- stephbeaudet, on 06/15/2008, -0/+7oh no, you are not!! great stories make great games!
- circa1015, on 06/15/2008, -0/+7Do you think the millions of people that buy GTA games and the millions of people who buy FF games are completely different groups of people?
- NCg8r, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1You know, I've never seen them at a party together...
- aflaks, on 06/15/2008, -11/+6http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-p ... for an awesome, non cracked review of the game. Yes, cracked made some very good points but i still hate them.
- ChokingVictims, on 06/15/2008, -0/+3I'm surprised this reviewer has never been on digg before
- Retrospekt, on 06/15/2008, -6/+4That makes sense.
O_o - SubjectiveC, on 06/15/2008, -7/+23This is just my opinion: The controls are horrible, the story heavily cliched with one-dimensional characters that all talk like "eeeey... I'm your cousin! eeeey... eeeey..." and it is painful to sit through, and the missions are all basically the same with little to no strategy required to complete. And on top of that, it's too long with little sense in completing it. Imagine my surprise when it came out to be the holy grail of gaming for 2008!
- Falldog, on 06/15/2008, -5/+32The thing people need to realize is that while a good game, yes, it's sure as hell not a 10/10. There are a lot of things which need to be improved upon. If reviewers has been more honest and less sensationalist when the game first came out there would be a lot less disappointed people out there.
At the very least we should make certain Rockstar knows of these issues so they can be addressed in the inevitable GTA V.- 4ster, on 06/15/2008, -0/+2I think you hit the nail on the head...had they given this game a 9 or 9.5, we wouldn't be having this discussion. It was a great game, but I honestly enjoyed and and became engrossed with Vice City far more than GTA IV. Vice City only got a 9.6 or so. The 10/10's given to this game will make me skeptical from now on.
- Dropscience, on 06/15/2008, -0/+2for a game to be 10/10 it has to be absolutely nothing to improve..nearly impossible
actually, for it to be a 10/10 kate would have to come out the screen and suck me off- Millsee, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1fat chance, she's frigid!
- JGib, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Yahtzee is that you?
- ashakeandfrys, on 06/15/2008, -9/+23It misses the variety of San Andreas..

- Tyrghast, on 06/15/2008, -0/+3Id take the detail of Liberty City over a large but boring landscape.
- fotbr, on 06/15/2008, -0/+7It also misses the sheer fun factor of GTA III and Vice City.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/15/2008, -2/+1I think you mean "over-reaching pointlessness"
- Dropscience, on 06/15/2008, -1/+3SA had too much going on
and the size? yeah I guess if a bunch of empty deserts mean anything to you...- potamkin, on 06/16/2008, -0/+0I guess its a matter of taste. Personally, i love the expansive deserts and woodland to blaze around in a jeep or dirt bike. I also desperately missed the ability to fly planes. I loved the way you could have a proper 'journey' in SA. Like driving from Los Santos to Mt Chiliad in a camper van, causing mayhem on the way. Great fun

- ghostoftomjoad, on 06/15/2008, -7/+2I usually like cracked but someone needs to explain to this guy that they weren't focusing on fixing all the user errors possible
- eriksanerd, on 06/15/2008, -3/+39I managed to put in about 45 hours before I stopped consistently playing it. But it still feels like I game I can pop in every now and then and enjoy in small doses. That, by my standards, is still a great game.
You can sit around all day and critique the flaws(which are definitely there), thus convincing yourself you hate a game you probably would have enjoyed, or just shrug it off and enjoy the overall experience.- FoxOrian, on 06/15/2008, -1/+1The game is a lot of fun just to muck around with. While some of the features found in previous games are missing and the missions are repetitive enough that any player could notice it in time -- just having at it and playing free form for a little while is entirely worth it.
I don't play GTAIV [or any of my games for that matter] every day. At night, when there's nothing else to do, I'll play a game. I'm only about 45% through, and I bought it on release day. If I were to blow through it in a weekend I'm sure I would've become very unsatisfied with the repetition and probably not pop it back into my system for months. However, by playing the game intermittently over such a while, the missions and free-play are still appealing.- powatom, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1Agree 100% - if you play it non-stop, then yes, it's going to grate after a while. I've finished it now (well, the story mode, still got a lot of other stuff to do), and often I'll just play it simply to mess around, go on a killing rampage or just hurtle around the second island in the fastest car I can find. It's a great sandbox game - without question.

- MetalGear7, on 06/15/2008, -4/+4Hopefully Rockstar devs will stop swimming in cash and fix these issues via xbox live patches
- NCg8r, on 06/16/2008, -0/+0You mean "Custom Downloadable Content"??? That'll cost you...
- lofispy, on 06/15/2008, -1/+10While certainly IV has less replay value than San Andreas, I think that the story and Niko himself was one of Rockstar's best so far...sure the game has its faults and tedious moments....but overall, I think that calling it the worst great game every made is a little much...
- helikopter, on 06/15/2008, -10/+25 Reasons Cracked.com is the Worst Site Ever Made
- atb12688, on 06/15/2008, -7/+4Wow sucks to be you.
- endustry, on 06/15/2008, -2/+70Next time it would be nice if they cut out the nag factor. Anytime I'm doing anything important -- delivering a $30,000 car to the garage for example -- Dwayne or Roman call and get all passive aggressive if I won't drop everything to go eat fast food three islands away. With friends like these, who needs the Russians?
- nonstop87, on 06/15/2008, -0/+4I killed playboy x too, he was really douchy. Too bad they didn't take you down a longer path with Dwayne I think they could have made some more interesting missions through him.
- aelias, on 06/15/2008, -3/+5They forgot the most important feature of the cell phone, the "off" button.
- hrshgn, on 06/15/2008, -1/+1No they didn't, there's a silent mode.
- bj00rn, on 06/15/2008, -12/+3That was clearly written by a angry twelve-year old forum-kid. Worst rhetoric "evar"!
I now have 60 hours in GTAIV, yeah; I love crap games *rolls eyes* - cambob76, on 06/15/2008, -7/+8I'm pretty much done with the GTA series, unless they come up with fresh ideas.
- thecockbanana, on 06/15/2008, -2/+7Then it wouldn't be GTA
- isimon42o, on 06/15/2008, -12/+1I want to kick whoever wrote this article square in the nuts!
Ok so GTA IV has a few glitches and shortcoming here and there, but to say that its the worst game ever made? The author is obviously trying to create a stir and is not really truthful.- ZombieSociety, on 06/15/2008, -0/+6Nobody ever said it was the worst game ever made.
