- edrift101, on 10/12/2007, -4/+46To prove Epic's point, I haven't played Gears of War since I beat it a month or two ago (great game BTW). Online play just wasn't doing it for me. More free maps and play modes would bring me back.
Microsoft needs to realize that we're already paying for a "Gold" level of service, which doesn't have much value other than playing online... - eizooo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22paid maps suck because you don't get a critical mass for a quick match on these maps
- d3vmax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17$400 for the console, $50 for Xbox Live Gold, $60 for Gears of war. no wait!! $20 for 4 new maps!!!
I declare we have a hostage situation here!
MSFT holds Epic Games Hostage!
(spread the news) - SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18That pretty much sums it up. Epic has always made Linux versions, given free content, etc. They like their customers.
But MS wants money. So on top of the $50 a year I already give them, I'll end up spending money on maps. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17greenbeanz69..you SEVERELY overestiamte the power of a site (Digg) that less than 1% of hte country has ever heard of, and less than 1% of that visit regularly.
- chazzy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14what?
- KlitchS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I agree with you, edrift101 - although I've still been playing some online games. More maps and this new gametype, Annex, will definitely make it a better online experience. Not to mention the "bugs" they are fixing which will alleviate some of the cheats that are going on during these matches.
- greenbeanz69, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Exactly, i hope this gets dugg a lot so many people find out about it. however unlikely, hopefully microsoft will see everyone talking about it might change their mind because of that publicity.
- CraigCarlyle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Microsoft spent a TON of money backing and marketing Gears of War, I can imagine they're going to try and milk as much money as they can from it.
- kaffein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The bottom line is, is that you already pay to play online, on top of your internet service... You shouldn't have to be forced to dish out cash on an item such as a map, an item that is required in order to play on servers running it. Server switches maps to one you don't have? - Pay up now little billy! -or- you get booted from the server... How nice.
I can see them selling an item, say... A special character model. You could download and see it, but couldn't use it unless you bought it.
/ - JustinZz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Geometry Wars Evolved was also to be free, but Microsoft made Bizzare charge for it as well
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Bill Gates is not the CEO of Microsoft anymore.
Try Steve Ballmer, instead. - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"greenbeanz69..you SEVERELY overestiamte the power of a site (Digg) that less than 1% of hte country has ever heard of, and less than 1% of that visit regularly."
Dude, I'm pretty sure Major Nelson & all the Microsoft Live people (some good, some bad, some terrible) surf this site, so they'll see this. - richiestang78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5OK MS does something cool like making developers not be able to charge for content that gives advantages to players but now they pull this crap, not cool MS.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6They will be caved in to release them as soon as Resistance's new maps are out too
- cam503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It seems that for every two or three things Microsoft does great, there are still a few bumps in the road here and there that just make you shake your head and wonder.
- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Interesting for Epic to come out with this. There is an article in GameInformer magazine (April 2007 issue) this month entitled: "The Content Microsoft Doesn't Want You To Have" It's basically a write up about publishers and developers wanting to offer free content to customers, but Microsoft mandating that consumers pay for it. "... it's not up to the publishers, and free content is being witheld from consumers under the speculated motive of Microsoft wanting to make gamers accustomed to paying money for goods above and beyond wallpapers."
I guess the $60 per game isn't enough for Microshaft. - Aidanjalali, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5MS always have, and always will, try to bleed every last cent from you, if they know they can. It's annoying, but it's business.
And we're allowed to hate them for it. (bastards) =) - ZZax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I guess I see the logic in both these business models. Obviously the Microsoft one seems like more instant gratification, while Epic's seems more long term to sell more copies of the GOW, the sequel and just build some brand loyalty. These things will help create long term success and profit.
The thing I don't get is why Microsoft is not letting Epic have autonomy over their own product. Sure Microsoft own the Live service, but I think it is not a good idea to tell developers what to do with their content. Let developers do what they want and let the consumer choose what they like. If EA wants to charge me 5 dollars for an alternate Charger's uniform for Madden, let them and let the consumer dictate if that will work. I think this is a much better way to show developers that most game fans don't mind paying for additional content, as long as their is some quality and value there. - Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6How can you loose?
Maybe you could try relaxing your muscles or something? - BishopAzrael, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5one more reason I won't be buying GoW, nor the Red Pack for Rainbow 6 vegas.
- enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Honestly, thats terrible. PC gamers have been getting FREE upgraded content for years. Console players have to pay for Live and now have to pay for each "minor" upgrade to the game? Its a powerful business model but it simply slaps the consumer in the face. I hope paying for these minor upgrades kills some of the games because its the only way M$ will learn. If we keep buying then they won't stop.
- HeatVision, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As of January 21st, Gears of War sold 3 million copies, I haven't found any information on sales since, but it's obviously higher. Prior to the Annex pack release, it had been almost 5 months since they released the game and during this time they only released 2 new maps (which were free).
Considering how profitable the game has been, I think Tim Sweeny has the right idea on releasing free content. - FrostRaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow, crazy article. Selling content for a game is such a subjective topic. I mean, expansion packs are fine by me because of how much more content you're getting. But to try and pop a ***** map or two for a game at a few dollars is just ridiculous. Kind of like when the map pack for COD2 came out at 800 MS credits, what a load of *****. As if $60 for the game and $60 for a year of GOLD Live isn't enough, but to nickel and dime players for something like maps? Brutal.
- Pyroteq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Geo Wars on Project Gotham only gives you 2-4 minutes or something to play.
- richiestang78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah but you can basically play the entire game for free anyway, dont think you can get achievements but the whole games is there besides the retro version.
As far as MS and game developers in general, I think they really are clueless how expensive gaming can be, especially if your doing live. Yes Live is cheap, 50bucks a year but charging for content is crap when your paying 30-60 bucks a month for a good ISP. They need to understand releasing content should be free and then try and pull new people into the game with it. Now games like Elder Scrolls is a little different since your basically getting a whole new expansion basically and even at that its cheap since PC expansions usually run 30bucks. - TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@avihappy
Wow you must hate games like
Metal Gear Solid(series)
Resident Evil(series)
Grand Theft Auto(Series)
Metroid(Series)
Megaman(series)
Ninja Gaiden(series)
Legend of Zelda(series) - admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Too bad they didnt fix any of the bugs. Chainsaw glitch, weapon slide, floating etc.. all work. Check gears glitches forums, they've all been figured out again.
Along with the shotgun being broken, covering gone TOTALLY bonkers, lancer being ultra-powerful, hammer coming down twice as fast and the grenade tag distance having changed (longer)...
Gears really, REALLY sucks right now. Almost everything they said they fixed, they made much MUCH worse (read the update list with a not in front of everything and that's what it is right now).
Annex is also rather unfair because of the spawning mechanism. In a gametype where every second counts, you are delayed spawn and then spawned furthest from the "ring".If you get any of the power weapons then you own the area... and if you begin winning a match then you're almost garanteed to win the whole thing. Of course you can no longer talk to the other team for a long time as well, taking much of the fun out of playing on XBL. - admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You can weaponslide, same as before. You can also longjump, new method required. Can still chainsaw glitch too. None of the glitches have been fixed, you just have to do one or two of them differently (lb rather than ab or ax methods).
Lancer is more powerful, shotgun damage has changed, grenade tag distance changed, hammer of dawn comes down quicker, boomshot has much larger damage range. As it stands, the shotgun acts very goofy, if you are roadie running you take a TON of damage for no good reason. I've also been getting headshots for shooting people's feet? perhaps the spread has changed... - vtbarrera, on 02/03/2009, -3/+4Microsoft is just going to bust a Halo and make a map pack available for some $$$. Microsoft already knows that there are douchebags like me that will gladly pay the 10 or so dollars that the new map pack will cost. Will this mean less people will play Gears in the long run? Yes. Microsoft is only looking at the potential dollars to be made by selling the new maps to the people who really want to play them. Besides, since when is Microsoft never profit motivated? They stand to make boatloads more money if they can get Epic to pump out a Gears of War 2 sooner.
- Heembo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is why I downloaded FEAR on my 2 year old PC and play and keep playing multi for free. Geesh.
- quitxjuggin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3no i just played the game with the patch and what they changed was the following (that i saw)
you cant do the weapon slide glitch:*(
you cant do the long jump:*(
the lancer is more powerful (i think)
thats it
as for annex,
it alright, but its not better than execution - Zawuhibu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can understand the arcade games not being free I mean they are real games although they are old, people may still like them and be willing to pay for them.
Maps I cannot understand first of all your cant find out the quality of the maps if they are anything like Raven Down I would not pay for them for sure. Since Raven Down was a terrible map.
Another reason that was previously stated was if your the only one to buy the map pack then your screwed since you cant use them. - linuxlucas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Because everybody knows that Microsoft needs more money! (that's sarcasm, butt3rs)
Time to assassinate Bill Gates, ninja style! - tektalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@raytown
You must be one of those 12-year olds who come here to digg since you thought you knew a lot about tech. Heres some advice:
Go masturbate, and get off digg. A business needs to generate revenue to stay afloat and to pay it's workers and debts, those billions of dollars you blab about can easily be used up in a matter time, and keeping that income makes a healthy company. But it is fair to say that nudging people to cough up that extra buck for a little map expansion is pretty low.
/rant - razor150, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Where does it say the maps are being held back because of MS? Nowhere, so the title is inaccurate.
As far as micro transactions, I am tired of them as well. MS is now charging for things we used to get for free last gen. Very few games charged for maps or any need content. Now free content is the exception and not the rule. It is getting a bit ridiculous. - jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Microsoft Live uses a peer to peer network, shouldn't be a problem.
- EvilFerret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I can't believe this......Not only do you people complain about micro-payments, but you act like you *have* to buy this *****. "Goddamnit, now I have to pay $5 for almost nothing, this is BS"... WTF? Microsoft is taking advantage of console gamers who aren't used to getting patches that include new features, extra maps...ect ect. If you people are willing to pay for *****, why the ***** would Microsoft change their tactics?
"Hmm.... Ok so we're making millions of micro-payments from these idiots who don't know any better.....But still, I think we should go ahead and just start giving ***** away for no reason because it's the right thing to do"
Microsoft knows damn well they wouldn't get away with this kind of BS on the PC gaming side... Bethesda already tried, I guarantee their ***** mods were downloaded via *illegal* methods and FAR exceeded the number of sales they got from the PC sales. We don't put up with this kind of *****....nobody should. - geeksquadkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@tektalk
I aggree i mean first of all what do you think our money for the system and games go to and the fact that they have to have the servers for the games to play on all the time and things like that. My dad works for a computer softwar company and Microsoft is one of the customers. I asked him and he said that they have a main computer that at all times has to be running with everyone whos playings name, Ip adress, score, movement, etc and thats electricity and its the program to run it which is developers to make it and technitions to fix it so ya its not that easy raytown they cant allways give stuff away for free although itd be nice - slochewie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It's not M$ for no reason
- avktm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3MS sucks really bad for doing this to the people who love gears and want to play some new maps, i bet nintendo wouldn't do this to their customers who pay $50 for online play :)
- thefaithful, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If developers are paying their licensing fees then why does Microsoft have to keep them from releasing stuff over Live?
That doesn't make sense. It seems if cool stuff is being released for Live gold then that would probably up their subscriptions and make them more continuing revenue than charging people one time for some new level. - jaspercasidino, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Holy run-on sentence!!!
Also, at 800 points for this and 800 points for that, I won't have money for anything else if I want to play an additional map for this game or another every so often. Anyways, they could get another sponsor (like they did for Raven Down) to help pay the costs of the servers and all other fees. - digitalfixit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1One thing that no one seems to mention. I am not saying I agree with this (I don't), but Microsoft's rational for wanting to charge may be the following. Their servers being hit hard. Say the map pack is free and it is 400 MB's and 2 million out of the 5 million that have the game will prob download on the first day right around when it comes out. If it costs money initially only the hardcore fanbase around 500,000 or so will download on the first week and then it will probably slow down substantially after that.
- Raytown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is to be expected of M$ though. I mean, when have they given back to the people who have made them the success that they are? They are so ***** greedy and just money grubbing as hell, when they already have BILLIONS and BILLIONS of dollars in the bank. Seriously, would it hurt them to be a little less greedy?
- DiggDagger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Off-topic: Is it just me or does Tim Sweeny look like a Locust?
- Wang, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Agreed, usual deal of everyone wanting something for nothing, and blaming the big guys because they can't have it yesterday. Sad.
- Xorp, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Jesus christ, consoles these days just seem to be a gateway to gimmicky crap.
New levels for only 10 bucks?!!?! How can I loose?
A few years later you just paid another $60 bucks for crap. - Cerebral, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4In all honesty there are two sides to this story from M$'s point of view.
1) They are afraid that 4 new maps + patch + new game type will take people away from the Hype-Machine that is the Halo 3 Beta that is hitting soon. This way they can argue with epic until the Beta is released and running because they think that people can't turn down Halo.
2) M$ does pay for the bandwidth and someone has to pay for that. M$ is not going to do it and as you recall that Old Bones and Raven Down were paid for by the Discovery Channel.
Either way this is a crappy piece of PR for M$ and justifies the "$" in the initials "M$". It is BS that M$ is disallowing the release of the content for free but then again this is the era for addons, map packs, image packs, expansion packs and we can only vote with our wallets. - aryo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0i personally don't mind shelling out a couple extra bucks if it'll give me worthwhile extra playability. in any case, microsoft preventing the pack from being released because epic wants it free is just bush league.
