- inactive, on 09/10/2008, -5/+91My thumbs are too fat for the iPod touch. Gimme buttons anyday.
- cerealjynx, on 09/10/2008, -0/+66I was super stoked to jailbreak my iPhone and get the NES emulator up and running, dispite having a PSP with an 8gig memory stick stocked with ROMs from Atari to PS1.
Turns out not being able to actually feel the buttons makes even the easiest game ridiculously difficult. It's like being 5 all over again and thinking getting the first mushroom in Mario is the biggest accomplishment ever. - inactive, on 09/10/2008, -6/+41As an owner of a GameGear, 2 GBCs, 3 GBAs, a DS, 5 PSPs, a Tapwave Zodiac, and an iPod touch, I completely disagree, It doesn't even beat out the Zodiac let alone anything else simply due to the lack of buttons. Hell, even the DS doesn't beat the Zodiac
Even the smallest PSP games take more space than the largest iPod/iPhone games, hell they're bigger than you'd ever want to download via wifi - Snokage, on 09/11/2008, -1/+34i just see battery life as the largest problem for apple.
- Arcae, on 09/11/2008, -1/+29Until the iPod touch gives me a game the quality of The World Ends With You or the Final Fantasy 4 remake, I'll stick with my DS.
- gametavern, on 09/11/2008, -3/+28can't happen. Crap battery, no buttons, no good games... good for toilet gaming only.
- johnomaz, on 09/11/2008, -2/+25I think Apple just wants to say that you can game on at least one of their systems.
- mgill3, on 09/11/2008, -0/+20A real gaming device needs PHYSICAL BUTTONS. End of story.
- legoman666, on 09/11/2008, -4/+22Not gonna happen. Check out the nGage...
- ButlerMonkey, on 09/10/2008, -1/+18I guess Apple is trying to appeal to even more casual gamers? I think certain games, like puzzle games will do well and work well on the iPhone/Touch. Other big name games will also do well just because of the publisher or the franchise, such has Monkey Ball or Spore. Other games like Ashpalt 4 or Crash Kart leave a lot to be desired especially when it comes to controls. But I doubt Nintendo needs to worry, Sony maybe if they don't remember that they need to keep bringing games out. So far all the games I've played are lacking the depth found in DS and PSP titles and that's something certain people are always going to look for.
- CoreyHalliwell, on 09/11/2008, -1/+17Why are apple and their users so Pretentious? I have a touch, i like it, i use it, it plays my music, it gives me internet on the go. But for me, it ends there. I don't go on the internet posting about how its gonna kill every other device around. What kind of asinine ***** thinks that an Ipod can touch Nintendo's 20+ years of gaming history? Even if the Ipod does get games guess who they're gonna be from? Or at least rip offs of?
Dicks. - smoger, on 09/11/2008, -3/+17just stop. seriously.
- RogueJediX, on 09/11/2008, -4/+17One of the reasons listed why Sony and Nintendo should be running scared is "1. Buying iPhone/iPod Games Is Quick and Simple". Give me a break! Granted, downloading is easier, but when I was buying DS games I never waited, nor did I ever experience any difficulties and I imagine the same can be said about PSP games. So there's your "Quick and Simple".
- HeyArnold, on 09/11/2008, -0/+12no, he wants 8 more handhelds.
/I think he's an octopus! - morningmatters, on 09/11/2008, -1/+13Nokia tried the phone/game combo and it failed. The problem is that dedicated game handhelds like DS and PSP have mature game development packages and armies of game developers who have invested a lot of time in these platforms. The concept of external carts/cd for the DS/PSP frees up disk space required by most non-puzzle games. Unless Ipod can over come these obstacles it can probably offer some good puzzle games on par with DS/PSP but not much more.
- louiedog, on 09/11/2008, -0/+12The iPod will kill the DS/PSP when Creative overtakes Apple in mp3 player sales.
- doshindude, on 09/11/2008, -2/+12the Ipod touch will NEVER kill the DS/PSP for many reasons:
1. it's a ***** mp3 player. get over it. that's what it was made for and that's what it's best at.
2. it's gimmicky, apple only made it for the sake of making it. It's a fad and will die out eventually.
3. the DS/PSP have a stranglehold on the handheld market and won't ever let that go, especially Nintendo, who's held (no pun intended) the handheld market since 1989. Plus, they are household names, nobody is going to buy an ipod touch for gaming, people buy DS's for gaming (it used to be the game boy but now it has changed over)
4. apple doesn't know what its' doing in the gaming market. It's tried multiple times in the past to get into gaming and failed almost every time. - xcbxcb, on 09/11/2008, -3/+13My DS already has superior games, MP3s, movies, emulators, linux, homebrew, ebooks, streaming music; it's easy to hack and nearly indestructible. Under $200 for the system and the added hardware. I can see zero good reason to even consider thinking about switching to anything else.
- inactive, on 09/11/2008, -4/+133 ways I can appeal to apple fanboys and start a flame war with ridiculous speculation
- Jdban, on 09/11/2008, -3/+12Nobody is touching the DS. Seen its marketshare lately?
Its $130 and its games are like $30, and there are so many good DS games.
DS's dominance aint going anywhere. - shit, on 09/11/2008, -1/+10I have to disagree. I am replying on my iPod right now and the batte
- RudeTurnip, on 09/11/2008, -0/+9The nGage was a horribly designed turd. You had to take out the battery to change the game cart.
- Elranzer, on 09/11/2008, -0/+9Nintendo's not losing any sleep even over the PSP. I don't think they'll even blink over the iPhone/Touch.
- namelessNN, on 09/11/2008, -3/+11i get so much amusement out of the mac fanboys on this site.
- jermo, on 09/11/2008, -4/+11DS/PSP have to prove themselves?
What? - mywhitenoise, on 09/11/2008, -8/+15I can't stand it when people say a product will "kill" another established product. It never happens, and usually makes the "killer" look like a horrible failure.
I'd buy an iPod touch for it's MP3 functionality (you know...what it was originally intended for), but they decided to strip substance for style. Apple, you'll have my money as soon as you put in AT LEAST a 60GB SSD in it, and price it under $400. - ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -1/+8I got Bomberman for iPhone, the controls were impossible as they were all on the screen so I kept blowing myself up.
I jailbroke and got the NES app. Tried to play Mario, couldn't even get through the first level without walking into goombas since the controls were so hard.
The only playable games are puzzle games like Tetris and ones that use the motion control like Super Monkey Ball, which is great but I don't even play it as it sucks up my battery so quickly! Apple will have to build the actual hardware for gaming if they want to be serious competition. - etx313, on 09/11/2008, -0/+7I have 4 honda civics.
- leetleo, on 09/11/2008, -1/+8dugg for excellent fanboy flamebait.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 09/11/2008, -2/+9Needs a ton of good RPG's. For some reason, the hand held consoles do good with RPG's.
- doshindude, on 09/11/2008, -0/+7lol, you bought an nGage, didn't you?
- euphoria860, on 09/11/2008, -2/+9i only have two nipples, but i have 3 ps3s
- DoodleMaster, on 09/10/2008, -2/+9when you said could I wasn't sure that couldn't was a possibility.
- bjs3171, on 09/11/2008, -0/+6so how exactly would one play vice city stories on the iphone?
- kinseyincanada, on 09/11/2008, -0/+6all it will do is make the aspect of cell phone games slightly important and improve upon the joke they are right now.
- jgatz, on 09/11/2008, -2/+8apple is a good company
however, taking on too many specialized competitors at once is a risky approach - diggduggDOOM, on 09/11/2008, -0/+6Why does it need to be wireless if it clips onto the iPhone?
- kingmanic, on 09/11/2008, -0/+6I think you have the order backwards. The DS and PSP have proven themselves commercially, technologically, and gaming wise. The iPhone is just a object of tech lust. A very successful phone but it remains to be seen if it can do anything else. The iPhone is the one who needs to prove if it's any more then just a phone.
- FredFredrickson, on 09/11/2008, -1/+6What, are they having trouble selling music now?
The only people who seem to think the iPod / iPhone could challenge the DS / PSP are people don't play video games. What does that tell you? - CalcProgrammer1, on 09/11/2008, -1/+6Why bury, he has a good point. Apple is way too into style. They could have an open platform instead of a centralized app store, they could focus more on fast hardware and large storage, they could add buttons to the otherwise-useless black bezel that could be great for gaming, but since buttons interfere with the stupid styling of it, they don't add them. Form follows function, if you try to build something that is all style, you'll usually sacrifice some degree of functionality. Not to mention Apple tries to control your entire entertainment life by selling you music and games as well as the device. I like my WM6 PDA, where I can get free games and emulators, use buttons to control stuff, and enjoy everything the iPod Touch offers without its ridiculous price tag (did I mention I have been enjoying all that stuff for 3 years while Apple fanboys seem to think the Touch is actually a new product design?). The iPhone/iTouch are just PDA clones with fancy screens. Seriously, the tech (other than the multitouch) has been around for a long time, Apple is a latecomer to this one yet people don't seem to notice and always support Apple just because.
- keesvd, on 09/11/2008, -1/+6Um...... No, thanks.
- veriix, on 09/11/2008, -1/+6Because gamers have grown up and don't have time to spend 70+ hrs on a couch, having an rpg whenever you want to play though...
- libertao, on 09/11/2008, -0/+5Consoles dedicated to gaming must have good games in order to sell the console and develop a user base. iPhone and the like will already have a user base regardless.
- smurfen, on 09/11/2008, -0/+5careful, people said similar things ("Sony can't touch Sega/Nintendo's xx years of gaming history") before the Playstation 1 .
That said, ***** Apple. - BinaryFragger, on 09/11/2008, -1/+6$9 for a generic Flash-style puzzle game or $60 for Mario Kart and Castlevania? Gimme the DS.
- maxsunset, on 09/11/2008, -0/+5I believe there was an announcement recently that the PSP was getting a WiFi store in an upcoming update. aka, no connecting to a PS3/PC, it would be exactly the same kind of simplicity as the iphone.
- aegis9975, on 09/11/2008, -1/+6DS and PSP are dedicated gaming platforms, and the difference and compromise shows. There are some fun games that I play on my iPhone but they are nothing compared to even the second-rate games on the DS/PSP. Let's put it this way, the iPod/iPhone is as good in gaming as the PSP is good in playing music/video.
- austin006, on 09/11/2008, -2/+6you get what you pay for... 9 bucks gets you a game that takes 10 seconds to learn how to play and takes 20 seconds to get bored of. and then another 2 seconds to realize how much you regret giving up 9 bucks for this crappy game
- alexkball, on 09/11/2008, -1/+5mmmmm tasty apple spam.
