- otatop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39Every company declines commenting on rumors. It's standard practice to avoid tipping your hand.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27Sure am glad I bought my premium xbox two months ago. Bastards.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19So new model, black case, HDMI port, and 100 more gigs of HD space, for the same price, in just over a year? I'm in.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22A lot of reports of bad systems and needing repair..
- jedioniram, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21You know, assuming it is true, I'd be kind of upset if the new 'premium' model is only in black; the white unit looks so nice.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13That's how a lot of companies are. They don't talk about rumors at all. I don't see how that's considered revealing.
- Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13There's a lot more to Xbox Live than multiplayer gaming.
- J3R3MY, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I bet gamestop will do some kind of deal for those that have a premium model already. Like trade in your premium Xbox 360 and get $200 towards the Zephyr.
- Airspeeder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12By offering different games, solid online play etc.
Believe it or not, attaching nunchuck controllers to a Nintendo hasn't exactly made traditional gaming obsolete. - Sababaaa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I've been telling my friends exactly this for the past 2 months: Old premium will become $300, New premium will have HDMI and 100gig HDD... both will include the new cooler processors and quieter DVD drive.
If you put all the facts together, this move was/is extremely obvious to predict. The new $300 package will be a direct competitor to the Wii (which will be readily available by May), and still turn a profit due to new production upgrades. I also wouldnt be surprised if all new 360s include a free 3 month trial of live. - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'm certainly holding out on buying one till then. My Wii and HTPC will have to hold me over.
- chembro84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I hate it when people whine about prices go down on products after they buy them, I bought my 360 for $399 beecause to me it was WORTH $399, why am I going to whine? I researched the product, decided the price was fair, bought the product, and have been enjoying it, if I thought it was too much I wouldn't of bought it, if I always decided to "wait for a price drop" on every piece of tech, I'd own nothing.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Of course they will deny it, no company would be stupid enough to go "Oh, by the way, our product will have a price cut in 2 months". That would result in near 0 sales of said product for 2 months.
- Exhaust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Wii is nice and all (I have one) but no matter what people say GRAPHICS DO MATTER.
Wii has alot of hype right now but in this industry opinions change very drastically even on small bits of "news". Just look at how much everyone is slobbering over PS3 after the GDC presentation saying they're the "comback" story of GDC.... Come on PS Home and littleBIGplanet were interesting but was it really THAT great? IMO No.
Wii has a lot of hard work ahead to keep the good will going. I'm talking after 2007... after the big first party games are out and PS3 and 360 have amazing games coming out.
If you bought a Wii early and already burned through Wii Sports, Wii Play, Zelda and the other good launch games its pretty slim pickens out there right now. I know a couple of hardcore gamers that haven't touched their Wii for a couple of weeks. If it wasn't for the tank game in Wii Play i wouldn't either. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10They're gonna have a tech nightmare on their hands when it comes to people trying to transfer their data from one console to the other.
When you swap your XBL account from one machine to the other, all other profiles lose the ability to play the Arcade games.. except the account who purchased it. Doesn't seem like a big deal, but if each profile is password protected... or it's a family box where each person has their own profiles/achievements, it's a big deal. - jedioniram, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Sometimes you buy something, and the next week they lower the price - happened when I got my PS2, but I went to the store with proof of my purchase and they credited me the difference. And again, the xbox360 will have been at that price for about 18 months before dropping. Almost everything goes down in price eventually, so it is just a matter of you deciding how much you want to pay and how long you're wiling to wait. If you're the kind of person (and I'm not saying you, specifically, are) that will be pissed off for spending an 'extra' $100 for a product bought 6 months to a year ago, you probably shouldn't be wasting money on video games.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9And this info is for Europe? Whatever Microsoft is doing with the Xbox 360--price drops, black/HDMI model, whatever--they'll do it first in the United States before Europe or Japan. This is expected, since the USA is Microsoft's hometurf and the biggest market for the 360. You would expect the same from Sony, such as the change to the 65mm model, to happen in Japan first.
- charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Here we go with this rumor. This story makes it to the front page EVERY single week. Maybe it's true, maybe it's not. Who knows, all I know is that this story hasn't been confirmed, and neither were the first 50 like it over the past few months.
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Maybe they have an "easy transfer" kit in the works or something? Maybe a USB thumbdrive that you insert, it auto-copies profiles/gamertags/XBLA games/etc, then you plug it into the new machine, and all your settings and such are restored on the new machine.
Just tossing something out there, you never know who might be reading... - mikew101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+590% I think you might be overshooting by a lot. Yes Halo 3 will help sell consoles, but 90% of xbox gamers wont buy it.
Halo 1 has sold over five million copies worldwide.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo:_Combat_Evolved
reported that 9.2 million units of Halo 2 have been sold worldwide.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo_2
Xbox units sold: 24 million
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox
Halo 1 sales + halo 2 sales = roughly 16 million sales if you give them the benefit of additional sales.
Even with both halo 1 and halo 2 put together compared to xbox sales would only land halo in about 66% of homes.
Halo is extremely well recieved, and I believe halo 3 will sell close to 20 million copies, but by the end of the xbox 360 lifecycle I do not believe that will be close to 90% unless you add all of the halo versions together as I have in this small study. - TheTjalian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hey if they make the Premium 360 the same price as the core in the UK, I'll definitely bite :)
- Jeffler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They have for months. $72 on the Premium system IIRC.
- citen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yeah right, knowning gamestop, ebgames, it would probably more like trade and get $50 off purchase price
- pixelate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ j3r3my
If so, I'm all over it. That's the only way I'll be getting 1080p on my TV, and there are lots of us out there.
I need to figure out what to do about game saves and downloaded content; hopefully they'll make it easy for us, knowing there will be lots of existing owners upgrading to new hard drives. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Euro is a much, much stronger currency than the pathetic US dollar.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Damn, mine started up the other day, and had a lowly red light come on replete with error screen. It wasn't the triple red death, but still scared the ess out of me.
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the sticker jobs looks like sticker jobs.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3gharding, I'm glad I waited too (waiting for Mass Effect to come out, anyways)
- look4alec, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"reduce the price of its current 20 GB Premium model to $299 (Euros)"
Is it $299 or €299 ? And if the price drop is the same for the U.S. do we have to take into account exchange rate?
€299 = $395 - PlayWithFire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Glad my 360 has a best buy protection plan
I think in about 2 months is will start overheating and crashing - Bigg3h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1While a price drop would be nice. Even better for Canadians would be not getting over charged for the 360, i guess thats is why they give us a game with the system. Still paying 50 bucks less and getting to pick the game you want would be better.
- stappawho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I just bought mine a month ago and having a blast with it.
Can't worry about this stuff too much. - rlg420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know, if the black has that flat finish on it like some of the rumor pics then it's going to look sharp. I am kind of sick of the shiny look. Although it would make it easy for a CSI to find some fingerprints.
- polyGone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2good thing you waited.....I bought mine a year ago and sent it back twice........(obviously not the same unit)
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know if the wii will be readily available in may, I hope so, but right now, getting a nunchuck is still not like buying bread.
- tektalk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If this is true, then My wait for Getting a 360 along with halo3,gears of war, is well worth it.
- Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+318 months, by the time May rolls around.
- noexistence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ya but Best Buy Protection Plan will only upgrade you to the new unit 120GB unit *IF* your 20GB unit is not available anymore, which it will be at a reduced price. Nice try though but read your fine print.
- watership, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's interesting how this is actually NEGATIVE news for Microsoft.
People who bought the 360 recently are going to freakout and cry bloody murder. The others who are holding off with rumours that a new version is coming, are hurting 360 sales now. No one will buy one if they think a new one is coming, and people have done that 3 or 4 times already in the 360 history. Rumours of a price drop before christmas, rumours of a new model in Feb. Now Rumours of a new model in May. There there is the FUD of the 360 being bad hardware. I've had my 360 since launch, and since I had it without incident, i still get nervous when I turn it off, FUD works. - AimlessAbyss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is good news for me. I have been wanting the 360 for a long time now, but waiting for the price drop or an upgrade. I saw some Photshopped pics of black Xbox 360s which looked really nice, and if the Zephyr actually is black it would appeal to the oldschool fans of Xbox 1. The 120 GB HD, quieter DVD drive, better cooling system and HDMI will be a big plus. This will prepare the Xbox 360 for new, more powerful future games (namely Halo3). H3 will, as people say, be a system seller. People who don't feel the games so far will definitely want to pick up the 360 if only to play Halo 3. I am willing to bet around 90% of 360 owners will end up purchasing Halo 3.
As for gamers who just want to save some cash, the price drop for the first Xbox 360 will be good for Microsoft. That will pretty much turn into the Core version of the 360 (which I thought was a pointless alternative, since everyone would have payed an extra 100 bucks to get the Premium). - Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought he meant from the release of the original 360.
- grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$300 == 300EUR, when it comes to things like consoles, computers and such, thanks to the included VST tax and the longer warranty.
- getliquified, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1sweet
i hope this comes true
i will definitely buy a premium at $299 - Locke005, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Wait, I think they're talking about May 2007 not 2008. So that is two months not "just over a year"...
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -1/+1Bastards.. I just bought mine four days ago.... :(
- m00nstone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1With all of the negative reaction to the PS3 price tag, and Nintendo coming in at $250, Microsoft would be insane not to drop the price this Spring.
- dunlop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@chembro84 - Please don't cloud up these boards with LOGIC :P
Of course the price will drop, that's why the PS2 still does not cost $399. And yes some people will get "burned". The 360 has been out for 18 months, what piece of technology exists that doesn't have a price drop in that span? As you mentioned I bought my 360 about 2 months ago because it was WORTH the price. I knew full well that there will eventually be a drop, but hey I'm enjoying GOW now : )
I was hoping for a drop next week to take some of the steam (lol) out of the Sony launch. I want Sony to be competative with Microsoft and Nintendo but I do not want a runaway winner this generation (even microsoft). Competetion = innovation. - joshGwyther, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This rumour is killing me. I really enjoy my 360 and mine just died. I got it day one so I'm not covered under MS extended warranty. I don't want to buy a new one only to have an HDMI model come out right after. I was thinking about buying a PS3 now for something to play and wait till May to pick up the new 360, that way I'll have both. Does anyone know the trade-in value of a used 360 at gamestop? I'm not sure I really want a PS3 yet.
- StingerMS, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Although this would suck for the consumer, for Microsoft's benefit, they should cut the price off 50 bucks. So this Christmas you have Halo 3 (which will be a system seller. I mean, LOTS of systems), a system that's 50 bucks cheaper, and you have Christmas, which is an obvious seller on it's own. Then, NEXT may, you release the new consoler for 399 and drop the premium to 299.
Again, this isn't a prediction. Just my two cents. - EmperorAwesome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@j3r3my
Not if precedence has anything to say about it. When Fable: The Lost Chapters came out, I decided to trade in my copy of Fable (the most expensive beta in history) for it. The manager told me they wouldn't accept it because the original was essentially obsolete, and they would have no prospects of selling it. -
