31 MIDI's that didn't make the cut in DOOM ...
rome.ro — Doom has a massive cult following -- but would it have been as successful if it included the following 31 MIDI's? Admittedly some are pretty awesome, while others are junk. Then theres "un48.mid" which combines a familiar tune with (what *sounds* like) a mentally challenged chipmunk mashing a xylophone -- I shouldn't talk about Romero like that...

- joep0, on 11/26/2007, -1/+22Woah, un20 is a midi cover of Alice in chains - man in the box
- Klarth, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Similarly, the theme from level 2 of episode 2 is Metallica's "The Call of Ktulu".
- mem2, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2dropped due to licensing issues perhaps ?

- Flappity, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Whoops, completely off - How about Alice in Chains - Dirt. The first part anyways; the middle part sounds like something completely different
- mem2, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2dropped due to licensing issues perhaps ?
- sdrawkcaB, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4There's a bunch of MIDI versions of songs here, as well as many that made it in game. http://doomisalotofmetal.ytmnd.com/ lists lots of them.
- CodePoet82, on 11/26/2007, -4/+0Another one, E1M1 is pretty much a midi cover of Judas Priest's "Painkiller" with some minor variations... Something tells me the guy that created the Doom soundtrack wasn't really all that creative.
- Sneakernets, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Uhm, no, I just gotta digg that comment down.
- Klarth, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Similarly, the theme from level 2 of episode 2 is Metallica's "The Call of Ktulu".

Except for Romero didn't do the music to Doom, or Doom 2. Bobby Prince did.- moojj, on 11/27/2007, -2/+1I realise the music was done by Bobby Prince. I had to get a John Romero joke in there somewhere...
- LValentino, on 11/26/2007, -1/+26Story title should have simply been, "NEDM".
- gen0, on 11/26/2007, -2/+6Not even doom music can save this digg.

- mrdeathgod, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3I seem to remember that the 'Monster Condo' music of Doom2 had a bit from 'This Love' by Pantera.
- VargVikernes, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Doom music is heavily inspired by metal music. I think I read somewhere they licensed some metal songs for Doom. You can certainty hear Slayer in these MIDIs.
- sgtpppr, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1Either Norway lets you browse digg in jail or you're not really Varg.

- kpaphysicist, on 11/26/2007, -7/+1These are pretty good. I have respect for the midi. I love writing midis (well, they're mp3s but they're written like midis are)!! http://www.purevolume.com/tonekid
- mrdeathgod, on 11/26/2007, -0/+6And now that I think back, another song in Doom2 was basically a MIDI of 'Them Bones' by Alice in Chains.
- khyberkitsune, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1Barrels o Fun level

- reckless8594, on 11/26/2007, -1/+6Un17 is Raining Blood by Slayer. It's an alright song until you get to Kerry King's "solo", which is just random wailing annoying sounds.
- fubar109, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3un52.mid is South of Heaven by Slayer.
- isunktheship, on 11/26/2007, -4/+1number 18 is metallica... master of puppets right?

- evil-doer, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1its "Silent Scream" by Slayer. off of South of Heaven
- shagey36, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1definitly not master of puppets....i know that riff but cant put my finger on it....anybody know it?
- Rethcir, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5Doom 1 had really cool music. Especially Episode 1. Doom was a great way for me to anti-socially waste my jr. high and high school years.
- dn11, on 11/26/2007, -1/+2weren't you anti socially playing quake by the time you were in high school?
- macweirdo42, on 11/26/2007, -1/+2Yes, because Doom stopped being awesome the day Quake was released. /sarcasm What the hell's wrong with you!? Have you no respect for the classics!?
- dn11, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1"respect for the classics" I downloaded the Doom shareware off a BBS with a 2400 bps modem dude. I played it endlessly - I have full respect for it and was also playing it in Jr. High - but yeah, by the time I was in high school i had moved on
- Sneakernets, on 11/27/2007, -3/+3Go back to your HALO 3 please
- dn11, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1huh? i've never even played halo or an xbox, guess i don't get the joke

- EbilPhish, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1Doom still is a great way for me to waste my uni years, except now I can bring it to class with my on my, NDS, PSP and or iPod.
- dn11, on 11/26/2007, -1/+2weren't you anti socially playing quake by the time you were in high school?
- AppleGeorge, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2I love Doom music. I remember when I first ran Doom Shareware version after installing in DOS, and hearing the music. It was amazing. And then when Doom II came out, it was even sweeter, even though I like Doom more. The do do do do dooooo dooooo, music is always stuck in my head.
- pnmoore, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5un15, un23 and un32 are also covers....see if you can name them...
- MJDub, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3un23 is Sex Type Thing by Stone Temple Pilots

http://retrospectivemusic.com/page.php?id=4 - McGrude, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2I have most of the Doom and Doom 2 midi's on my phone. They make great ring tones, especially since they are so small, and "free" (I already bought the Doom95, Doom2, Ultimate Doom CD, so they were "free" to me").
- ohgr, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3technically they are not free, since they were not thrown in, after Doom was Open Sourced.
- DrMilkdad, on 11/26/2007, -0/+7un51 sounds like "Walk" by Pantera
- VargVikernes, on 11/26/2007, -3/+1More like something by Messhugah.
- isunktheship, on 11/26/2007, -0/+0Definitely not.
- Asianwaste, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Robert Prince credits Pantera as one of his main inspirations.
- JustinPM, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1It totally is walk. Just missing a few instruments and they repeat at a different octave at a point.
- evil-doer, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2thats because it is.
- VargVikernes, on 11/26/2007, -3/+1More like something by Messhugah.

Greatest ever. - ttamez, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1isn't un08 actually in Doom 1?
- mancat, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2From the site, a lot of the songs are early versions of what went into the game.
For some reason, the song un49, which ended up in the game, always gave me the creeps when I played this game as a kid.

- Kenzan, on 11/26/2007, -7/+2In other important news, was I the only one who thought the Mom from the "Incredibles" was hot?
-anyone? - doosteen, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4I can't wait for unreleased Daikatana midi's!
- blondon, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1un52 slayer... south of heaven...
- cs188, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2the beginning of un41 sounds like Alice in Chains - Rooster....maybe?
- TomKarpik, on 11/26/2007, -1/+3Doom MIDIs run through higher-end synthesizer equipment, and recorded as MP3s: http://www.sirgalahad.org/paul/doom/
That is something any fan of Doom music will appreciate, I think. ;-) - nullx42, on 11/26/2007, -1/+6IDDQD MOTHER *****

Amazing that I can recall that what... 10 years after playing the game? Today I can scarcely remember yesterday...- mancat, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1I was talking to a buddy the other day who barely ever played computer games as a kid, played doom a few times on my computer years ago. He remembered that damn code.
- Asianwaste, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1It's weird that I can remember most of the Doom codes but I can't remember any of the Duke Nukem codes... I played DN3d a hulluva lot more too... :
- KloroFormd, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1dncornholio is god mode, dnstuff is items/weapons/ammo.
I forgot the rest. :(

- Asianwaste, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Wow MIDI... that goes a ways back. I remember I went through soundcard after soundcard to find the perfect MIDI interface for gaming. You'd be surprised how superb MIDI can sound if you have the right instrument definitions. I believe I left MIDI with Yamaha XG soundcards. The Duke Nukem 3d, Doom OSTs, (Robert Prince was the freaking man), Sierra adventure games, and a lot of downloads from VGmusic.com all sounded excellent on Yamaha XG instruments. They were cheap cards too.
As great as they were, I'm glad we moved past relying on MIDI files for PC gaming.- Terr01, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2I dunno, I think that the scarcity of "ear-candy" and effects that could be accomplished actually drove a far greater emphasis on the music on a core, instrumental level. In many games the music was relied upon to evoke emotion in the audience--even more than in some movies, since a video has it's own impact.
In a world of MIDI, we would have been spared the spectre of boy bands, among other things. I find I prefer instrumental stuff far more than music with vocals, since half the time the music is about "baby come back to me", or something which I'm not really in a context to empathize with. If I had an algorithm that could take music and turn vocal tracks into instrumental ones, odds are I'd use it pretty often.

- sam98597, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1un46 is Alice in Chains - Angry Chair
- pogfreak, on 11/26/2007, -2/+2Bobby Prince got rich off ripping other people's songs into midi and calling it his own. No rights were purchased, no royalties were paid, yet Bobby gets royalties *every time* a new version of doom is ported that uses "his" music. Probably one of the luckiest game industry bastards to profit so much from so little. Gaming was so niche back then that no one who owned the rights would even care to pursue legal action. Right place right time I guess.
- Asianwaste, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1He frequently admits and credits other artists as inspirations. Nothing wrong with that.
I'll point out the hypocrisy when I say that I nearly got pissed when I heard some bitch singing her remake of "Come As You Are".
- Asianwaste, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1He frequently admits and credits other artists as inspirations. Nothing wrong with that.
- solid12345, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1Hmm I may have to dig out my 200+ meg soundfonts on a CD-R somewhere.
- Natetendo83, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1A bunch of these eventually made the cut for Doom 2
- Trollhammaren, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4Doom turns 14 this December 10th. Remember to wish it happy birthday and play some good ol' ***** deathmatch!
- khyberkitsune, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1Umm, problem is quite a few of these tracks WERE in DOOM. Some of this music is not unreleased. buried as inaccurate.
- daridave, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1Many of them sound like primary versions of DOOM2 songs. un28, for example, is very similar "the Pit" level in DOOM2, which I think was level 9 ? anyway, awesome find... loving it.
- eviscerator, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1if you look in the file info of the midi files, you will notice that many of them actually contain the name of the song they are rips of.
