- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24For the love of God, why would you do that?
- Thater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18What possible reason could you have for wanting that other than being selfish and small minded?
- negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14DUMBASS. Why would you ever do that? So you can wait another 3 months before you can do anything worthwhile with your PSP?
- TheAbsintheHare, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Cyanid35: We'll be killin' ya, if these here files be brickin' our PSPs.... Yar.
- slythfox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I've gotten it to work. I have some ideas why people are getting bricked (so, DON'T do the following):
1. Turning their PSP off while showing the red screen.
2. Copied MS_ROOT into the root of their memory card, instead of the contents of MS_ROOT.
Reasons for my sucess (not sure, but the way I did it worked):
1. Full battery.
2. AC plugged in.
3. New formated memory card, formated via PSP's "system settings" menu.
4. Upgraded to firmware 2.71 (I had 2.5).
5. Restarted my psp when I added the downgrader files.
6. As advised by someone, I waited 15 seconds (leaving the psp on, doing nothing), and went to "Photos." Tried it two times and it didn't work. However, on my third try, I waited two minutes, went to "Photos," instantly got a red screen. A few minutes later, it was done.
7. Didn't touch the psp until I was sure the psp was done. Then turned it on. Worked.
Tried to make a video, but gave up when the first try didn't work (and video camera kept turning itself off while recording.) - Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11It's a little sad that one of the big things I find interesting about a PSP is one of the things Sony tries to eliminate. They don't make their own good games, so you can't play user-made ones either.
- MalumEnSe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12PSP Updates will, of course, have the download available as soon as it is released!
- Shawon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Very nice. I already had 1.5, but this sounds very cool, Sony should just open up homebrew.
- MalumEnSe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The downgrader has been released! The direct download can be found here:
http://dl.qj.net/2.71-Downdater-PSP/pg/12/fid/9746/catid/114 - mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Wow, you bought a PSP!
- JazzFlight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7fudged, why not just use DevHook for 2.0+ firmwares?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8PSP: A system through which more can be obtained by having out of date software than by having up to date firmware.
Sad, isn't it?
Also, doesn't this say a lot about Sony? All of these nerdy Sony programmers are repeatedly beaten down by hobby coders of the PSP homebrew community. Sony ought to be embarassed- this has not been a good year for them.
Viva la homebrew!
1337noobs.com/forums - these are my PSP forums. If you need help with this downgrader or anything else PSP related, feel free to stop by. - cyanid3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Links to the dump which must be used with the downgrader:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2Z98AY4Q
Either one will do...
Download link for the actual downgrader will be given out as soon as it is released - acemilo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+62.8 can't be downgraded with this hack since it doesn't give kernel access in 2.8, only 2.0 - 2.71, and ta-082 owners are still out of luck, but an eloader type app is very possible. Dark_Alex is a frequent user at the forums on maxconsole.net and they always get the releases first, so be sure to keep an eye out there. It should be released tonight on maxconsole then everyone else will just leech off em.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Probably Sony goons who are trying to discourage use.
- themacx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ehh
"Update #1: Just a few minutes after posting and already an update! According to the developers, the code for the downgrader is still a bit unstable, so it may not start up successfully on the first try. However, it is stable once it actually begins to run and there should not be any problem with bricking if the instructions (soon to be provided) are followed precisely.
Also, as mentioned above, Mathieulh & Dark_Alex did brick several of their PSP's during the initial testings. If you feel like donating to their cause, you can do so here. (Also, mad props to Xairu and harelyG for their bravery in testing the downgrader!)" - cyanid3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's already been tested ;)

what about people who don't know about homebrew and (after learning) could possibly contribute to it? - Jolene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So, whos going to test this first...?
- thomasprebble, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Me too and in all honesty it pisses me off that these guys are not doing a goddam thing to try and tackle this problem. Jeez how hard could it be?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Also please note: I got an error message after restarting my PSP. something along the lines of "Your setting information has been corrupted. Please press the O button to repair."
Press O, and it'll be busy for a few seconds, but after that, you'll have 1.50 firmware! - Abatrour, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4WARNING!:
According to the poll going on right now on the QJ.net forums, 12 out of the 29 polled had a failed flash, whether that be the program freezing and it not downgrading or bricked PSP's.
A few of which were the fault of the user because their psp was a ta-082.
Just giving a heads up. - Thater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is great news. I actually just downgraded my 2.6 a couple of days ago after leaving it sitting in my closet for months. I've been playing it more than ever now. I just wish someone could make a decent GBA emu. Anyway, even though I'm n00b to the homebrew scene, I'd like to welcome all those 2.71s that survive the downgrade!
cheers! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Works like a charm.
I used the DOWNDATER file from rapidshare.
It took me a few tries, but the red screen finally showed up.
Hello SNES emulator! - MalumEnSe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The downgrader has been released, you can download it here!

OMG it works like a freakin charm both the links at the top work and I had 0 problems just followed the directions and bam it worked!!!! Im to freakin excited!!! Its the bomb diggity!! - ReCkLeSsX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'd rather not risk bricking my PSP and I'll just wait til they release more of the .tif files.
- funtownarcade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another success story with a day 1 PSP and stock memory card.
- sei0n, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I had 1.5 all along.
- readme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's out!
http://downgrader.lan.st/ - cyanid3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2tested with 100% results on IRC by about 20 people :)
good luck ;) - trash64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here is the picture to tell if your psp if ta-081
Altho my psp makes no sense. The article states that if you have IC1003 on the right it is a TA-082. If the code "IC6001" appears on the left you have a TA-081 motherboard. I have both codes. So im not too sure what i have at all

So many people will be joining the ranks of us 1.5 users.
Kernal ftw!
Hope TA-082ers and 2.80ers can join soon :D - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2loco roco. and anyway, check the psp wikipedia article. there are 3 demos for the psp.
- jait, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As others have before, if you're going to use the downdater, afterwords I suggest upgrading to 2.0 and then downgrading again. This hack a day link has a step-by-step for you:
http://hackaday.com/entry/1234000687060851/ - kirashira, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4i have a ta-082 =(
- eliteeggnog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2if you need the 1.5 helper files still, you can get them from cyanid3's ~thanks cyanid~
mirrors here:

or email me at eggnogPSP@gmail.com, i'll be checking it for a few days, and probably send another bulk message out tonight, tomorrow before i leave, and monday, when i get back from my short, sad little vacation
~eggnog~ - DelSolMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Downgraded my 2.71 white Japanese psp with cyanid3's link. Good stuff.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So.....what kind of success rate are we talking about here?
I have a launch day PSP with 2.7 firmware (which I can upgrade to 2.71). Is this thing going to work, and is there any chance I'll end up with a brick instead of a homebrew machine? - NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Exophase did, full speed GBA emulation.
- phort99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes; wait a couple of weeks before you start mailing bombs and toxic chemicals.
- MaskingTape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just did this to my PSP, worked no probs. Now I just need a bigger memory stick.
- Saiing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And another success. New and happy 1.5 owner. Froze on the first try. Restarted and got the red screen on the second try. At last! Homebrew here I come.
- Tanglefuzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bricked mine :( Did everything by the books, but after 5 seconds of red screen, my psp shut down and now it won't boot anymore.
Blergh. - projektmayhem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1your option now really is to modchip the psp
- trash64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What about ppl that have ta-082 what do i do then?
- cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i used easy 2.71 downgrader from here and it worked great.
http://www.psp-hacks.com/ - ptaylor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, mod it
- slythfox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@foolfromhell
Yes, you need to upgrade to 2.71 even if you have 2.7. So you need to find a 2.71 upgrader.
You can find a picture somewhere of what a TA-082 Mobo looks like. I've seen a few pictures, so try doing a google search. - addicted68098, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope they get a 2.8 downgrader working I want to use mine a unervsal remote.
I doubt it will be much different because security is about the same from what I understand. -
