- G_Raph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+55The 2 million doesn't surprise me one bit considering how many japanese already own a DS. However...for 500,000 (non ds owners) to go out and buy a ds just for pokemon is nuts. I figured there wasn't 500,000 people in Japan without a DS. Its not like the ds lite just came out either...amazing.
And for trying to put that 500k in perspective...thats Sony's PS3 ENTIRE LANUCH shipment. - Dihuko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45Makes me crave D/P even more! :D
- Shayer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39The Japanese sure love their Pokémon....
I can't wait for Nintendo to come out and start bragging about the sales figure tomorrow - Shayer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37'Continued':
Moving on to the DS Lite; 500,000 units were sold in just a few hours. Nintendo had predicted such a demand and so stocked retailers with 1 million DS Lite units. - gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33And nintendo makes a PROFIT off of these things!
Damn, Nintendo could've made a Pokemon launch title for the Wii and it would most likely have helped the Wii completely obliterated the PS3 in sales. (Not saying they don't have some sort of surprise up their sleeves, but I doubt that they do... not this late anyway)
I get the feeling that D/P is more of a test for Nintendo to see how solid the Pocket Monsters fanbase still is. - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Rock. I'm happy pokemon still have a solid fanbase, at least in Japan. I can't wait for D/P!

I'd be in the hug Picachu line. :p - Supernova36, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21My god this is insane..
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26It's on 4chan too, must be true.
- SnuKs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Sorry man, but that was funny.. haha!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Who doesnt??!?!?!
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Wow, at least in Japan I wouldn't feel like some 21 year old weirdo buying a pokemon game at a store. (The show sucks now but the main games are still addicting.)
- Aikinai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17If you're lucky, you might even get to hug this Pikachu

The pokemon market is still stable, they've just pulled crap out of their hats for too long. I've loved Pokemon since it first came out, but have yet to ever buy a console version. I own blue, silver, and sapphire. The MAJOR handheld versions are great. The spin-offs... not so much. - dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16It doesn't really need to. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that they've made more money of off D/P in Japan today than just about any other developer will make from their games in their entire lifetime.
Oh, and the 500,000 units is just plain crazy. I'd really like to seem someone create an updated chart that shows the progress of DS sales and points out when key titles were released (though that shouldn't be too hard, now should it?)
And people say Pokemon is old. The same thing will probably happen in the US and Europe too. - Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18It wont, because Americans have awful taste in games.
- Flump5000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15anyone know what the american release day is?
- ST3V3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I wouldnt want to be a PSP in japan right about now...
- springah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15"Crap like this sells but an awesome thing like an Xbox 360"
Hahahah, made my day. - fiberspy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13They love it because in Japan, cute=cool. In America, for guys anyway, cute=gay.
- shitthisfook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10When you put in perspective, it's like an artist going 2X platinum in one day.. with a really expensive album.. ***** ridiculous sales. I was about to go to another section on digg, and did a double-take when I realized it was 2,000,000 and not 2,000. Jesus Christ.
- phantom42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11to be fair though, thats not necessarily 500,000 -new- ds-lite owners. the limited edition ds-lite (pokemon themed, obviously) also went on sale at the same time.
its very likely that a good number of those sales were to existing owners. - shirosamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yes. They do. As do I.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@Razak
Sega Dreamcast would like to have a talk with you, they have some logic issues with your post. k thx - gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Its a special edition DS. Itll probably go on sale at, like, Toys "R" Us or something.
- Razak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"No offence to Pokémon; I don't think it's bad at all. But I think think it's particularly amazing either...Insanely good marketing though."
Pokemon was actually a really great game for when it launched, it was a very very good game concept, very unique, and very well thought out. I think perhaps it got deluted a bit in the US because by the time it came out here, the clones had already been made and a few were already out before pokemon even came in the US. (they waited too long to bring it here, it had already sold like 7 million copies in japan). The other main thing that Americans have a problem with tends to be the "cute" factor which for some reason people can't seem to get by, because the game is great, though honestly I think it has gotten a bit stale by Ruby/Sapphire. they need to do something to really change the serious. (Dungeun & Ranger look great, but Dungeun may not have been done quite right. - Ignitedude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Photos Of The Limited Edition Pokemon Ds Lite
http://sickr.wordpress.com/2006/09/01/limited-edition-pokemon-diamondpearl-ds-lite/ - macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I dunno why but Pokémon can appeal to anyone. I loved Pokémon, go Bulbasaur, and I dunno why but it still has it's appeal.
- bluemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I can't freaking find a DS Lite here in Japan, it's always sold out!!!
- Ssj6Kirby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Wow, that's pretty impressive.
I'm going to take a wild guess and say that it won't have as much of an impression here in North America. - gamemaster357, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9live on poke'mon live on
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Would be funny is one guy stood in line with those guys for a few hours, then asked for a PSP when he went in. Woulda prolly been mobbed.....
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8That is so dirty it's hilarious.
- pokemogu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You're right, hardcore gamer.
- Mrstupid7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Face it man, Halo sucks when compared to a properly done FPS.
- jfujita, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This is what happened when the kids got out of school that day:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPyHTxW0FTM - Zarxrax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I was considering importing this game since it's not coming out stateside until next year, but I'm worried whether i will be able to play it online properly. It would suck if Nintendo put some sort of region lock on the online ability so I couldn't play with anyone besides japanese people after it gets released here. Does anyone know if all regions of the game will be able to play online with people from all over the world?
- Jairick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This happened last 9/23 (SAT) right? I had no idea what those people were lining up for. I was there at Akihabara about 9am to show my friend around. I didn't know shops open at 10am. hehehehe.
I guess on 12/2, I'll be in one of these long lines. :D
But, I wonder why they have to stand in line. Can't they preorder these online? - roxas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6aww man now you got me all excited.
- pokemogu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Backwards? Even if that's true, gaming is just a recreation and who can blame people for not advancing their recreation? It's like bashing vinyl collectors because of their out-of-date taste. Well, Pokemon is not out-of-date though.
- AshTR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow, insane. It'll probably only be 1/4 of that here. Makes me want to move to Japan so I don't get mocked over stuff like that. Still though, 2 million copies of Pokemon sold out in a few hours is insane. I definitely agree with trunkster.
- smiles23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6nintendo has the midas touch
- LethalAmbition, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Does anyone have a US release date?
- Render, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's very likely that the JP version will be incompatible with the US version because there may be certain changes to the US version that make it this way. Animal Crossing DS is incompatible with it's JP counterpart, because things were changed from the game :P
- jeikabu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+49/28, actually. Oddly enough I *also* only recently found out that a lot of stores don't open until 10. Odder still is the fact that the electronics store closest to my house opens at 10:15.
- macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow pretty harsh, shows you know something about games.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Just insert pikachu faces at the end instead of Mario, and you're probably right...
- TripinVA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5My import should be coming next week sometime. =D
- phantom42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3they havent announced a US date yet.
- Shayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3anyone else creeped out by that big pikachu in one of those pictures?...It's F'in creepy...
