- coheedcollapse, on 11/02/2007, -5/+117Great and balanced overview of problems plaguing all of the separate consoles. Good to see one source admitting all of the problems with all of the consoles rather than harping on a single one.
- inactive, on 11/03/2007, -30/+11628. allow you to use a mouse.
Counter strike on PC or xbox? there is no comparison, the PC wins. - Zero2aHero, on 11/02/2007, -4/+85I think "save" is the wrong word to be used. It implies that all platforms covered are dying. The Wii, PSP, DS, and to a lesser extent the 360 are selling just fine. They could have said "suggestions to improve consoles." Of course they have to pander and attach a number to the article, and then make it sound dire.
- ggnictee, on 11/02/2007, -22/+95Dear All,
Why no keyboard and mouse? We would spend 50$ on a usb wireless box, honest we would. Consoles will never replace PC's completely until RTS and FPS can be played with a keyboard and mouse. As much as I love my wiimote it can't compete with my mouse for speed and accuracy (double for a normal controller) plus you lose 40 buttons by switching the left hand from a keyboard to an analog stick.
Dear Nintendo,
Check out Live. Now do that. and hard drive support.
Dear Microsoft,
Why can't I transfer files to my 360? it has a hard drive and network access. no one likes to stream video and music if they could just transfer it. And why can't I watch TV shows for free. I'll watch targeted commercials. you'll make tons of money. Just get every cable channel you can and stream them over live. it's win win win.
Dear Sony,
I can't help you. I'm sorry.
Dear Sega,
Bring back Sonic side-scrollers. just trust me. - inactive, on 11/01/2007, -5/+51Nintendo needs to slap it's developers in the penis and get them to start taking better advantage of the Wii's graphical capabilities. I'm sick of seeing crap that looks PSP quality. Also, stop giving licenses to ***** developers. No I'm not going to buy Texas Hold'em 2015.
- grumpyrain, on 11/02/2007, -2/+48Dear Nintendo, If licensing costs is the only reason we can't play DVD, then please let us buy it through Wii shop channel.
- danasghar, on 11/03/2007, -10/+51Oh the irony. I received my second Red Circle of Death tonight. Microsoft has made the biggest piece of ***** console Ive ever seen.
- hassanchop13, on 11/01/2007, -9/+39you hate on sony, yet its the one console that actually does support keyboard and mouse if the developers let you (ut3 is supposed to work with it)
- dinostabOMG, on 11/01/2007, -7/+30I've been a console gamer my whole life, barely touching PC games of any kind - with one exception: the FPS.
Why? Because he's absolutely right. There's no competition between even a mediocre mouse player and an "expert" controller player. - Gryph1, on 11/01/2007, -3/+26The only problem with this article is arguing about xbox live subscription fees while also complaining that sony and nintendo doesn't have a comparable online structure then saying this "But with Sony and Nintendo offering free online alternatives,"
wait.. what? Did 3 different fanboys write this article? - whatthefu, on 11/01/2007, -5/+26I'm a PC gamer generally, but to be fair Halo is a decent example of console FPS's working well. There is no need to be finicky in that regard; whereas RTS's on consoles have a long way to go. But can't both just live in harmony? Some people genuinely prefer the controller to the keyboard and mouse.
- roosterjm2k2, on 11/01/2007, -4/+25You're right, there is no competion between them...because they are 2 different things.
When everyone in a game is using a controller, or everyone is using a KB/M, then everyone is on an even playing field... so you dont need to worry about advantage.
I was a PC gamer for a long time, swore off consoles because of the same reason (FPS + anti-controller Hype turned me off). I played Most FPS's from Duke Nuke'm on. All the way up to UT...then PC games started getting too repetitive, and too much focus was being put on the graphics, and gameplay started to suffer for it. Tack on Vendor relationships (games that intentionally looked better on on graphics card or another) and I grew tired of it.
I bought an xbox for project gotham racing. Played it and loved it. Avoided the FPSs though. Broke down and bought CoD, hated it. Broke down and bought Rainbow 6...hated it as well. Avoided Halo for a long time, all the way up untill just before halo 2 came out. Couldn't figure out why everyone wanted to play an FPS on a console. Then I played it, and the controls felt natural for once. Then H2 came, and I played it for a long time. I still don't like most console FPSs because the developers don't seem to pay much attention to the control schemes that really work.
Keyboards have some advantages, where console controllers have some as well.
For example, linear movement on the sticks...I can walk as slow or fast as I want just by moving my thumb more or less, most keyboard based games leave you with a "run" toggle for your choice in that matter.
Keyboards have more buttons, yes, but face it, for the most part you use about 10. 4 for movement, then others for guns/etc...crouch, zoom, and jump... most of those are covered in the console games as well...
Comparing the two isnt realy fair, since games dont ever (aside from a dumbass "MS Windows Live!" game or two...stoopid) put one against the other, so one can never really be said to be "better", just "different" - tastypastry, on 11/01/2007, -4/+23Sega should come back and release the greatest gaming console ever made.
- neATL, on 11/01/2007, -0/+17**(quote) plus, i remember when console games were like $25 brand new...**
I remember when console games were $70-$90 on the N64. - HBNDonut, on 11/01/2007, -4/+21"There's no competition between even a mediocre mouse player and an "expert" controller player."
Which is why the 2 should never play against eachother. The PC players on Shadowrun dominated the 360 players. But some people, like myself, prefer to play with controllers because every function is done centrally and comfortably by the controller without navigating around a keyboard and mouse. Its more comfortable to sit on a comfortable sofa in front of a big tv than to crouch over a desk. And with consoles, you're not going to get raped by someone with better hardware/software... its an even playing field. My favorite thing about console FPS games is that you get to use triggers to shoot and there is rumble in the controller...
The only reason I see that PC FPS games are "better", is that its easier to be more accurate with a mouse. I wont mention the superior graphics, because its rediculously expensive to upgrade your PC every 6 - 12 months. - chingy1788, on 11/01/2007, -4/+18lets not forget Strategy
mouse + keyboard is much better than a controller with its very limited number of buttons - Harrison88, on 11/01/2007, -3/+17You can use a mouse on the PS3
- LaueOfficer, on 11/01/2007, -2/+15I bought a release model right off the shelves in target, day after release. It never caused me any problems until 4 days before halo 3, then it red ringed. I sent it in, got the replacement after about 17 days. It was dead on arrival, still waiting on its replacement, wtf is that *****?
- johnhummel, on 10/31/2007, -1/+14The only time I've felt differently is playing Metroid Prime III. I was playing this weekend before my trip, and one thing that PC games do have is the speed.
But there is an advantage to using the Wiimote in a FPS game: direct fire. For example, on MPIII, I was able to keep one creature in my "sights" - in the center of the screen. A PC FPS game (or usual console game), you can only shoot what's right in the middle of the screen. But with my Wiimote, I could hit things that were outside my center area, giving me the freedom to keep dodging and weaving, while still shooting at things outside that center dot.
That is the one time I've felt that the Wii FPS controls are superior to the PC. The mouse/keyboard combo still has the speed advantage, and I don't see that going away. But being able to shoot anywhere on the screen instead of just the center - that's pretty damn cool as well. - inactive, on 11/01/2007, -0/+13Need internal memory space for GameCube saves on the wii.
PS3 and 360 can do this. Why can't Wii? It's not that hard to create a virtual space formatted just like your mem cards, you know. - Dundasbro, on 10/31/2007, -2/+14A game can't look down on anything, let alone a console. One needs eyes to look down.
- hassanchop13, on 11/01/2007, -0/+12in fact, in some situations, controllers are preferred
fighting games, flight games and many actions games are kind of annoying on the keyboard - hassanchop13, on 11/01/2007, -8/+20decent article, by why bust on the ps2? In the end, its probably the greatest (along with the SNES) console ever made in terms of a wide selection of classic games. seems like a waste to complain about sony cutting their development on it when nintendo/microsoft stopped supporting their consoles long ago.
- bobbagoose, on 11/01/2007, -0/+12I didn't necessarily agree with everything you said, but....
SONIC side scollers YES! I have a dream, that one day [soon], Sega will release an amazing side scrolling sonic adventure in HD. I thought I was the only one, but damn, I want this more than GTA4 (well almost). - TechCF, on 11/01/2007, -1/+13No headset on the PS3? I use the same headset I use on my phone (jawbone).. it can be paired to two devices. Do not want to pay for another one that I'm not going to use
- grumbel, on 10/31/2007, -1/+12And paying $30+, wasting a lot of shelve space and losing some image quality is better then paying $5 for a theoretical Wiiware Player exactly how? Sorry, but I really don't get how people can defend the obvious lack of such a basic feature.
You don't want to use your Wii for watching DVD? So just don't use it if it ever comes, but don't argue how not having DVD playback is a good thing, since that quite frankly that is complete *****. - smedrick, on 10/31/2007, -1/+12Yet when I played Halo on the PC, the control was horrible. Halo is definitely tuned for a controller, not a mouse.
- doshindude, on 11/01/2007, -0/+11I have 6 DVD players in my house, I don't need another.
- Toad008, on 10/31/2007, -0/+11If $5 more a month is what's breaking "ur" back, You shouldn't have bought a next gen system. That's 1 more hour a month at a minimum wage job.
Plus it's not a required expense. Just cancel it. You can use a free silver account and get a fair bit of the functionality. You just can't play games. For me, all the extra features of Live over other online services is very very easily worth it's cheap price tag. Being able to instantly join my friends from a different game is great. Voice chat with a friend no matter what we're playing? It's all worth it. I probably save more than $5 a month from live, as I don't pay for long distance calls to talk to friends who don't live in the same city as me.
If live were free, I don't think it would be nearly as robust as it is. Development costs money, and that money has to come from somewhere. How do you suggest Microsoft fund further development of Live? If they cancel the subscription fees, they would have to jack up game prices, or something like that. Then you have all the people who don't have internet, or don't ever play online pissed off because they have to pay more for games to support something they can't / don't even use. - KaiUno, on 11/01/2007, -6/+16So very VERY true. Nothing beats playing an fps with a mouse. Over the years I gave both several tries, but when I played Halo (all thre of them) on the xbox, I could never shake the feeling I was missing out on the "freelook". Take Bioshock. You tend to look around at a sound you hear, try to get in as much of the scenery as possible. That's hard work on the xbox, not so on the pc. I'm not even talking about the ability to completely rule competitors playing with a controller, it's just that you're missing out on a lot of immersion too. In real life, you look around pretty fast. So you do with a mouse. Not possible with a controller.
- tuxidomasx, on 11/01/2007, -5/+15FTA: "[Nintendo] could put a larger focus on quality. Say, by bringing back the "Official Nintendo Seal of Quality" and making it mean something for a change."
co-sign.
when i was little, thats how i knew a game was at least decent. that gold seal. - navster15, on 11/01/2007, -0/+10You do realize that developers only needed to pay a licensing fee to get that seal? It meant jack *****. And believe me, there where plenty of horrendous games with that seal clogging store shelves. You need only to watch episodes of the Angry Nintendo Nerd (Google it) to see some of the shovel-ware that was put on the NES.
- danasghar, on 11/01/2007, -6/+16just be happy the PS3 turns on.
- Kitsune818, on 10/31/2007, -2/+12The biggest problem with the Wii is that not every game needs to be motion sensing. More than half the time, it feels tacked on and doesn't seem to add anything (my arm got particularly sore after Twilight Princess). I've taken to calling it Wii-Wanking. Then Friend Codes are crippling online play, followed by storage issues (There's an SD card slot right on the front Nintendo! Let games use it!)
- estvir, on 11/01/2007, -0/+10They're not meant to REPLACE PCs, it's just a different platform like arcade machines vs consoles vs handhelds vs PC, etc.
- bobbagoose, on 10/31/2007, -1/+11PS3's for gamers
360's for gamers
PCs for WORK - fritzbrown, on 11/01/2007, -9/+19Right, the PS3 has everything except... games
- theShiba, on 11/01/2007, -0/+9Man... it's official. I am also SICK OF LISTS. How come every time there is a list on Digg, it just turns out to be some ***** blogspam nonsense??? Ugh.
- bigbadgoat, on 10/31/2007, -1/+10and going through another set of AAs every other day is greener? wtf?
- NeoOfTheSith, on 10/31/2007, -2/+11Because my PS2 is so worn down from playing DVDs on it all these years... (Hint: Sarcasm)
You over-exaggerate the effects of playing DVDs on your console. - fallenone05, on 10/31/2007, -1/+10I don't mind the frequent updates at all, I literally have a much better ps3/psp than when I purchased them with all the stuff they have added! Keep them coming Sony!
- staticneuron, on 10/31/2007, -0/+9It is up to the developers. The worse thing any of those companies could do is start putting more orders and restrtictions on devs.
- adml_shake, on 11/01/2007, -0/+8True you can get it but it really is something that should have been built in. Seriously you can get a mini wireless PCI card for 20 bucks if you know where to look, it wouldn't have been that big of a deal to make the thing wireless right out of the box. And 99 bucks is a bit steep for something like that anyway.
- staticneuron, on 10/31/2007, -0/+8when were console games 25 bucks brand new? during the atari age? I remember buying games for the nes and snes with my own mone and almost falling ou becuase of the prices of games. between 40 and 60 bucks is what I have always seen.
- inactive, on 11/01/2007, -1/+9"We would spend 50$ on a usb wireless box, honest we would."
What the *****? Speak for yourself, consumer. - fgsfds, on 11/01/2007, -21/+29Sadly, a lot of what they said is WRONG.
For example:
PS2 games can NOT be compressed very much, as they are comprised mostly of already compressed data. If the game takes up 4GB, then it will take up 4GB no matter what you do to it.
Nintendo should not be expected to be able to keep up with demand, as the Wii BY FAR is the most demanded console. It either is or will soon be the best selling console of this generation, and is also the last console to be released. Although the PS3 was released only a week earlier, it's at the very back of the pack. Although the 360 has the same ballpark number of consoles sold, it's had twice as long to get to that point.
The Wii will not get DVD playback, as that runs contrary to the design philosophy Nintendo works by. They do not make movie players, they do not make CD players, they do not make VCD players, they make devices to play video games. If you tell me that you don't already have something in your house that plays DVDs, I'll respond that you probably just didn't want one. Adding half-assed DVD playback to a console doesn't do anybody any good.
Bad games is not a fault of a console, it's a fact of life.
Etc... - coheedcollapse, on 11/01/2007, -2/+9Same thing happens to me every once and a while. People don't agree with what you say and Digg you down for that, even if it's total fact. Very stupid.
Personally I reserve my thumbs down for true idiots, biased jerks, and spammers. - bilbravo, on 10/31/2007, -4/+11Not to mention, you can transfer files to your PS3... not just stream them. It sounds like the PS3 may be the answer this guy needs, but is blinded by hate.
- danasghar, on 10/31/2007, -13/+20yah makes sense to rag on Sony, they have their HD player built in, free online, HDMI, 1080p, Wifi, rechargeable controllers, option to upgrade harddrive without voiding warranty, expansion slots for memory cards, quieter, and less then 1% failure rate......Ive got some suggestions for Microsoft, stop ***** in boxes and trying to sell them to us over and over again.
- fallenone05, on 11/01/2007, -2/+9fragile as in "piece of crap"
