- GhostWithToast, on 03/06/2008, -8/+19No Galaga? No Pac-Man? No Millipede?... Worthless!
- dannyman999, on 03/06/2008, -2/+12just saw "king of kong" which i loved and this takes me further into their world which i'd never heard of until recently. good stuff.
- futureisours, on 03/06/2008, -0/+9my wife would never let me do this. *sigh* some people are so lucky.
- Akaziel, on 03/06/2008, -1/+10Given that I've been working on making a MAME cabinet for a while, I dugg the hell out of this story. This guy brings a tear to my eye, and I salute him. I'll take classic gaming over next-gen gaming nine times out of ten. I wish I had the tenacity (and finances, since these machines are usually $1500+ apiece) to do what this guy is doing. And when I build my MAME cabinet, I'm going to have parties and invite all of my friends over to play. It's going to be, as Alex is fond of saying, EPIC.
- PaperMonkey, on 03/06/2008, -0/+9Did you grow up playing arcade games at your local corner store/arcade on your way home from school or on lazy Saturdays with your friends? If not, then I don't suppose you understand the attraction to these machines. There is a certain amount of nostalgia involved in the whole process. Not to mention the kid-in-a-candy-store feeling of playing your first video game all over again.
- darny, on 03/06/2008, -0/+8I think 75% of why this setup is cool is because these cabinets let you play the games the way the original developers intended, with the control sticks (which vary from game to game) and the original art on the side of the cabinet...something that your fancy machine doesnt have.
- tobikow, on 03/06/2008, -1/+8I recommend that every gamer occasionally has a retro gaming session, as an escape from the traditional LAN party. It is important for gamers to know their roots, and is a fun "escape from the norm."
- coppyrightmind, on 03/06/2008, -0/+7Problem loading page = party got shut down.
- inactive, on 03/06/2008, -0/+7best run on sentence of the day.
- Frecklefoot, on 03/06/2008, -1/+7Uh, Asteroids never had a joystick: Rotate Left, Rotate Right, Fire, Hyperspace...
http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=6939 - mourne, on 03/06/2008, -0/+6seriously. who are these people that get in relationships they are unhappy in. I'm getting married in 2 months. My soon to be wife, doesn't "allow" or "disallow" me to do anything. And Vice Versa. It's about being a team.
She wouldn't even disallow me to go to an orgy, but I may not have a wife after that ;) - securitymonkey, on 03/06/2008, -0/+5He has an original Guantlet cabinet? I know a red wizard that needs food... badly.
- john2kx, on 03/06/2008, -0/+5Rolling Thunder... hell yeah, that game rocked.
- Scrappy1850, on 03/06/2008, -1/+6make your own luck. get divorced.
- aydoubleyou, on 03/06/2008, -0/+5My Dad still has his Defender Stargate from 1981. We've had to replace the monitor a few times, but it runs great. My Dad kills at that game, he used to sit there for hours on the same lives. Hmm, this makes me want to go play it.
- norman619, on 03/06/2008, -3/+8MAME FTW!
- lamprey187, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4ahhhh the good old days. At least now I can emulate most of the good old days. Nothing beats the real deal though.
- inactive, on 03/06/2008, -2/+6Neople are puts...
- Postalwrker27, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4Dugg for Rolling Thunder.
- SanTe, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3Newer does not automatically mean better.
- edicius, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3Because those aren't as cool.
- darkism, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3You're forgetting the social component.
Sure, you can sit in your house playing Guitar Hero by yourself, but if you go to the arcade to play (say, Guitar Freaks, for example), you'll attract a crowd, meet other like-minded players and most likely have a lot more fun. The best IRL friends I've ever made I made through going to the arcade to play DDR back in 2001. Now it's 2008 and none of us really play the game anymore, but they're good friendships that are based on more than a silly game.
Arcades are all about the experience more than the games. - SanTe, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3Ms. Pac-Man was a way better game. Four different boards, the fruit moved around the maze, the ghosts' movements were randomized better so you couldn't pattern it, the graphics were a bit better, and it had intermissions.
Fun fact: Ms. Pac-Man originated as an unauthorized bootleg hack of Pac-Man called Crazy Otto. Now it's the most popular video game of all time. - hydratedsquash, on 03/06/2008, -3/+6I have asteroids on my calculator, its definitely better without a joystick.
- KF6BBL, on 03/06/2008, -1/+4Sheeeeit, that's nuthin'
I've had 30 arcades at my house at one time in various states of repair. Although I do have to give props for having 21/22 working machines.
One time I hosted a party at my work in the auditorium where we had about 60 working machines, pizza, beer and soda. Good times, good times. - daridave, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3Just give me Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition and I'll have an awesome party with my friends, too.
- funkywood, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3Why get Pac Man when he can find at leas 2 Ms Pac Man machines anywhere there is any other arcade machine in the USA.
Why is that by the way? Did someone on the production line accidentally enter an extra zero or two or do americans actually have some weird attraction to Ms Pac Man? - ers35, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3hydratedsquash is referring to this quote from the article:
""Oh yeah, absolutely. Asteroids is a really big one for me. [some machines] throw a joystick on stuff that isn’t necessarily joystick based. Asteroids is all about the button controls." - inactive, on 03/06/2008, -1/+4Um, Defender... hello...?
- Akaziel, on 03/06/2008, -1/+3Actually he distinctly said he didn't want emulators, because they don't feel right. I can kinda get where he's coming from on that, but the hobby is too expensive for ME to be picky.
- MeatBucket, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2what about Michael Jacksons video game? Anyone remember that and the irony of saving children bounded in ropes? Hope PSN has that for download one day....
- neocognitism, on 03/06/2008, -1/+3Indeed being free to get plastered while playing a bunch of fun arcade games with your friends in peace would be fun. Added bonus: no grade school kids running around being extremely annoying. Double added bonus: No DDR.
- rizzle, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2Peter Hirschberg FTW!!
Link to his arcade: http://lunacityarcade.com/photos.htm - Scrappy1850, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2if that is what you like to do, she should support you in that. i am still waiting for that special girl that thinks all my stupid ideas are hilarious and not dangerous or immporal.
- bjorni, on 03/06/2008, -1/+322 games only? Ok I guess, but check out Peter Hirschberg's collection of 65 games:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artic ... - Bishop81, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2Man, that takes me back... Wish I had room in my place for some of those. :o)
- vuke69, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2Start tugging on your junk a lot... I heard somewhere that helps.
- masterm1nd, on 03/06/2008, -1/+2Having a machine for 1 silly 8 bit game is pointless. 1 machine with 1 game, not worth the space...
- Managua8Green, on 03/06/2008, -1/+2This party sounds like a geekfest. What about all the bitches and brew? its a sausage fest party
- Doomsan, on 03/06/2008, -1/+2I guess there weren't a lot of girls at that party...
- inactive, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1He's cool. You are a fag for practically sucking his dick via a Digg comment though.
- ratbear, on 03/06/2008, -1/+2Rolling Thunder...that takes me back.
btw total sausage fest. - rolf, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1Yeah, been there with Golden Tee at some bars.
It's just that there are no more arcades in my area except the movie theater. Used to be 10 or so, now they are all closed down (in major malls too). - BearinG, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1I suppose you have 22 women at your LAN parties too?
- timedwards80, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1I miss the days of riding my bike up to the arcade, popping on my headphones, and tuning out the world.
Around my neighborhood there are no places for kids/teens to go and hang out and escape for a bit. There are only places and activities for older adults and families. It's as if our cities neglect to accept teens in society and force them to stay out of sight and out of mind. Truly sad. Bring back the arcade! - etx313, on 03/06/2008, -0/+122 Hookers + 1 House = My kind of party.
- jcaino, on 03/06/2008, -1/+2this place is a good time:

- leprix, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1how is a 900+ DVD collection not "remarkable?"
- SanTe, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Maybe he should make a run at the world record:
