:D - c0mputar, on 09/28/2008, -0/+79Starcraft "helped bring South Korea out of an economic depression."
dugg.- Coercion, on 09/28/2008, -1/+0for that reason i think starcraft should be higher on the list, pretty good list by the way
- robbiedo, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1Technically, a recession...Maybe Starcraft prevented the recession from deepening.
- Mecklenburg, on 09/28/2008, -6/+1What´s about Prince of Persia? The 21st thing?
- kinseyincanada, on 09/28/2008, -2/+59Bawls? really this is something that can be stacked along the lines of the PS2, NES and Goldeneye?
- Peko, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3I'm not disagreeing but maybe the inclusion of Bawls is just a tip of the hat towards "external" changes... like, uh, Bawls represents how gaming culture made advances into general consumer culture outside of hardware/software.
- robbiedo, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1Personally, I thought it was a "ballsy" inclusion. Agree with @Peko.
- Peko, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3I'm not disagreeing but maybe the inclusion of Bawls is just a tip of the hat towards "external" changes... like, uh, Bawls represents how gaming culture made advances into general consumer culture outside of hardware/software.
- stlredbird, on 09/28/2008, -10/+2Bawls and Final Fantasy?!? Please.
How about Nitro and Dragon Warrior!- warsongs7, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Agree with you on Bawls.
- whiteguysamurai, on 09/28/2008, -7/+5No Yu Suzuki?
I think he's at least more influential than "bawls". - Crash1337, on 09/28/2008, -2/+52dugg for not being spread across 10 separate pages.
- AchaIemoipas, on 09/28/2008, -10/+4Crap list.
NES should come after the internet, 3d acceleration after the NES and Doom shouldn't be on there. Castle wolfenstein should be after 3d acceleration. Then the two sided game pad. - unclefuz, on 09/28/2008, -10/+1no mario 64?
hmmmmmmmmm- Tahiri, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Why? PS1 had 3d platforming before Mario64
- smacksaw, on 09/28/2008, -4/+17#20 WASD: That's admitting you're really young! To me, WASD is what player 2 used to navigate and IJKM is what player 1 used to navigate.
#13 2600/ET: I would love to know where all of those copies of ET are buried and go there with a video camera and a shovel and try to recover them.
#10 Game rentals: I also think that a lot of games that might have put developers/publishers out of business were given new life by this. They mention Final Fantasy saving Square's bacon. I worked at a video store back in the day. People didn't really buy that game as much as they rented it, ran out of time and then bought it. That happened often with good games. I often look at the lack of selection with game systems today and while I acknowledge that development times eat into the possible numbers of games produced, on-line distribution only gives you a taste of a game. When you play it for a long time and can't beat it? Or don't get tired of it? Then you go buy it. That's the REAL "trial" version. We just don't get games that way anymore. Now, with Gamefly you can just keep it until you beat it/tire of it, but you don't even go and own it.
#4 Doom: Doom? Wolfenstein 3D.
#1. The internet: Totally agree about Microsoft missing the point about free online play. I used to play Maplestory on PC and there's all of these private servers that are killing it. Nexon, the publisher, screwed up the game and has piss poor customer service. Instead of licencing private servers, people hack the game to make their own anyway. Proof that the "free" model is what people want. They'd be smart if they just sold a copy of server software and charged for updates. But whatever.- WhoopteyDoo, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1I believe the copies of ET are buried in southern New Mexico, exactly wherein I can't quite recall.
- mrsneakypat, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1I actually grew up on Marathon.
- robbiedo, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1Kind of ambivalent on the whole Microsoft charging for Online Play. I rarely use it, so I opted for the Silver membership after my 2nd year. However, it is clearly the "gold standard" for online gaming right now, and the $4 dollars a month seems a reasonable price for a clearly better experience. It costs a lot of money to run a data center, but I do suspect it is a profit center for MS even at the current price.
- goffy59, on 09/28/2008, -3/+11Doom definitely deserves to be there. For you console kiddies who don't think so, learn to use a computer; you will understand.
While you guys played 2d games, I was playing 3d games on a much faster computer that didn't require cartridges and I could copy them in case they got deleted or lost somehow.- cobainirvana, on 09/28/2008, -4/+4My crysis will own your doom :-D
- goffy59, on 09/28/2008, -0/+5Doom was an original. Crysis is another spin off of the FPS genre. Dugg though. Lol
- cobainirvana, on 09/28/2008, -0/+6Doom and Crysis did different things for the gaming genre. Doom is and always will be the greatest thing on earth, but Crysis is revolutionizing the graphical aspect of pc games. Doom 3 looked real in 04, but Crysis is approaching the "better looking than real life" status. Gamers have been promised even better graphics for the sequel. Crysis has the potential to be as revolutionary as Doom.
- kinerry, on 09/28/2008, -3/+5wrong, wolfenstein 3d
- goffy59, on 09/28/2008, -1/+1I agree, but I think Doom was the most popular. Therefor earning ID software its credibility. I've played Wolfenstein 3d more then I have Doom.
- kinseyincanada, on 09/28/2008, -2/+1yea well you cant copy games anymore hell you can only install them 3 times.
- dekuscrub, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4I know everyone will be screaming "Wolf 3D" but for many people (including myself) Doom was their first FPS. I did not even know what an FPS was before Doom.
So yeah I agree. Doom deserves to be there.
- cobainirvana, on 09/28/2008, -4/+4My crysis will own your doom :-D
- Vikaas, on 09/28/2008, -9/+2I'd add women to the list if anything. They've been HUGELY influential in a vast array of games for several reasons. Ranging from why the game is even being played (mario saving one) to sex appeal (list a bit long).
And of course, because nothing turns a woman on like hardcore gaming, am i right? Am I right..? Wait, really? *****.. - reiggin, on 09/28/2008, -8/+2Is this engrish? It reads like it was written by a 12 year old who is still recovering from fetal alcohol syndrome.
- Jaysunli, on 09/28/2008, -11/+5Possibly the worst "list" I've ever seen presented to Digg.
- skunkman62, on 09/28/2008, -2/+1i would have to agree, but lists are what make to the front page. maybe 10 best lists on digg should be submitted
- TheScotsman1980, on 09/28/2008, -1/+10A straight to the point list article, all on one page. Nice.
- uskomaton, on 09/28/2008, -12/+6Buried for "e-sports".
There is no such ***** thing.- dstz, on 09/28/2008, -4/+2I tend to agree. Video games are games. And beautifully crafted games, like beautifully crafted chess sets, can be considered like some form of art (not the act of playing, the game itself.)
- jgtg32a, on 09/28/2008, -4/+1Maybe esports should be changed to Sports games?
- Abomonog, on 09/28/2008, -0/+7I totally agree with the way Quake is placed in the list. The game introduced 3 of the most used features in PC gaming today. On top of that it's one of the few games out there that came with a built in CD player (command line based). Virtually all modern games use something that was first introduced in Quake.
- benighted, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4and don't mention how many games were made base on quake3' engine
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1The first multiplayer game I ever played over the Internet was Quake.
- MrDoug, on 09/28/2008, -2/+14One phrase...
"All your base are belong to us!" - ikarimaru, on 09/28/2008, -8/+2Wow, what a crappy list. I love this comment about paying to play games online: "Multiplayer games could be played for free online, and subscription-based online gaming because [sic] a thing of the past... only to be revived by Microsoft and its XBox Live service. Seriously, how did this happen?"
Evidently he doesn't understand the costs associated with hosting game servers through Microsoft instead of internal to the development company.- Darkangel754, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2Microsoft doesn't host the game server, you have to host them yourself.
- matt42, on 09/28/2008, -7/+0Never understood WASD - surefire recipe for cramped fingers. QAOP was better for keyboard control, I've completed many a level/game/fastest lap with that for 20 years, from the Speccy to the PC.
- nynety, on 09/28/2008, -1/+9How the hell are you gonna use the mouse? WASD is just for *one* hand.
- Zackinabox, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1I just tried that.........Ur RIGHT!!!
- Darkangel754, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3How the hell does that work?
- PopASquatt, on 09/28/2008, -8/+1Wow, nothing but ***** comments.
- Vikaas, on 09/28/2008, -1/+4You're right. Buried.
- TheDarkPrince, on 09/28/2008, -6/+7Another list article, another rushed cobbled together bunch of half true statements by someone who takes only his own gaming history into account. Why must *every* list even remotely connected to gaming contain Final Fantasy?
More importantly, where are the Sims? I personally hate the game, but it has changed much of the whole gaming scene. I guess being the top selling PC game for however many years isn't that influential, but some drink that is only sold in America is.- TheDarkPrince, on 09/28/2008, -3/+4Just reread this and noticed The Sims are buried in "Non-destructive games/Creative Games". I must have missed it due to the ridiculous made up name and the entire article being unreadable pretentious crap.
- nynety, on 09/28/2008, -2/+2Look again.
- tobsterius, on 09/28/2008, -2/+3This list is odd. It seems to me that practically everything that happened in the gaming industry has been influential according to this.
- Rockitout234, on 09/28/2008, -5/+1Grab your bawls and run!! - I never knew the FPS genre all originated from DOOM.
- kinerry, on 09/28/2008, -2/+7wolfenstein3d
- Dustin00, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1Dungeons of Daggorath
With no % of health, the game uses a beating heart to indicate how healthy you are. And the game will make your heart rate go up.
- Dustin00, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1Dungeons of Daggorath
- TrevorBelmont, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2There were a bunch of FPS's before DOOM (as evidenced by all the Wolf3D references above). DOOM didn't start it but it legitimized it and made it mainstream. It made such a huge leap in graphics, fluidity, atmosphere and immersion that it inspired an FPS explosion.
A lot of people on here seem to think that the credit should go to Wolfenstein over DOOM because it was so popular first. I think DOOM deserves all the credit. I knew so many people who upgraded their CPU just to be able to play it or to have it run better. People in the gaming community knew and loved Wolf3D but EVERYONE knew about DOOM. People may have forgotten (or are too young to remember) that DOOM made national news for weeks. It terrified parents with it's "hyper realistic" bloody graphics and satanic themes.
IDSPISPOPD
- kinerry, on 09/28/2008, -2/+7wolfenstein3d
- IndustrialJones, on 09/28/2008, -1/+3They should have given credit to some of the people behind the scenes. Like Shigeru Miyamoto for giving us Mario or Ken Levine's work on Bioshock. Things like the internet or caffeine drinks are too obvious of an influence. It's like saying gas is the greatest influence to the internal combustion engine.
- HarryRag, on 09/28/2008, -7/+2Video acceleration is #2 on the list. How is 'video acceleration' influential to the game industry when it is essentially nothing more than part of the ever evolving technology used for video game systems? 'Jump to 3D' may have been a better way to say it. What a dumb list.
- futureisours, on 09/28/2008, -9/+5#1 The Pirate Bay!!
- cobainirvana, on 09/28/2008, -1/+3Dugg for one page!!
- Joudoki, on 09/28/2008, -1/+12What about digital distribution, and steam? I'd consider it a major evolution if not in the way games are played but the way they're distributed...
- mstachiw, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3that was as entertaining as a sandwich
- saikyan, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2Hmm... I've had some pretty entertaining sandwiches. Hawaiian Pizza Sandwich for example.
- kibbled, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Hawaiian Pizza Sandwich? I'm intrigued. Where does one purchase such a meal?
- saikyan, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1They make them at this little family-owned place called Freddies. It's in Berwyn, if you're familiar with the Chicago area. Toasted french bread with marinara sauce, cheese, fresh pineapple, onion and bacon. Delicious!
- simmin, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1How about a Jill Sandwich?
- saikyan, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2Hmm... I've had some pretty entertaining sandwiches. Hawaiian Pizza Sandwich for example.
- adiyo011, on 09/28/2008, -4/+1EA Games...It's not even a game anymore. It's crap being pushed out.
- Moodswung, on 09/28/2008, -1/+3I love the power glove, it's so bad.
- 68024, on 09/28/2008, -1/+3No mention of the C64???
- WestonP, on 09/28/2008, -0/+8Good, but get rid of Bawls and add Wolf3D
- Shabow, on 09/28/2008, -1/+16You left out something:
Super Mario Bros. - kinerry, on 09/28/2008, -2/+111 is wrong on so many fronts
The Sega Saturn filled that role in the mainstream, but I believe the sega cd was the first (could have been the 3do though)- Tahiri, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Neither of your examples were considered successes, meaning PS1 brought CD to both the mainstream masses and the developer masses
- RickyTheRiot, on 09/28/2008, -4/+420 of the most influential things to happen to the game industry....written by someone who is either two young or too stupid to understand the scope of the article they created.
Huge, absolutely huge, glaring holes in the list (C64? - ok it's added as a footnote), some very personal choices included (Bawls?) and some just perverse decisions (WASD?) show the author didn't give this as much thought as perhaps they should.
Dugg down. - dykast, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2Dugg for 3dfx box! People need to remember gl-quake and the original voodoo add on card as the beginning of 3d graphics for the PC.
- fartcloud, on 09/28/2008, -2/+2I find this list's lack of Pong very disturbing.
- darkphenox, on 09/28/2008, -0/+10They didn't include the backstabing of Sony by Nintendo, the gaming world would be completely different if that did not happen, Nintendo 64 would have had a disk drive (hopefully) from the start Sega would still be a big developer, Sony might not even still have been a console developer, so many things would be different.
- bigmuffpi, on 09/28/2008, -1/+2donde esta Mario?
- Cdog923, on 09/28/2008, -4/+3What a terrible article. Buried for idiocy.
- OropheR, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4To pay to play online sucks. Guild Wars model of game is the way to go. WOW, Eve-Online (etc) are total rip off !
- albinorhino101, on 09/28/2008, -1/+1Bawls? what about Jolt?
- welliwonder, on 09/28/2008, -1/+3I see we've been advertised bawls. Bawls has had 0 influence on the gaming industry. Buried.
- kibbled, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Instead of Starcraft and E-sports it should be Battlenet and Steam.
What made Starcraft and Diablo huge was the free online gaming service that is still active today even tho it has been over a decade since the game has been released.
Valve's steam is what digital media should be. I can buy a game over the service and not worry about losing it if I have to re-format my hard drive. I once had Steam off of my computer for a couple of months because of a reformatting and reinstalled it because Half Life episode 1 was coming out. I installed Steam and got all my games back within minutes.
I think this author did a top 20 of games but I think there are bigger things that happened in the industry. - Dustin00, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1"Multiplayer games could be played for free online, and subscription-based online gaming because a thing of the past... only to be revived by Microsoft and its XBox Live service. Seriously, how did this happen?"
Multiplayer Diablo was free on Battlenet. And 50% of the people you joined up with had hacked the system to move faster and have ridiculous weapons. They didn't want to play, they just wanted to kill you.
Cheaters. XBox Live actively hunts them down. The locked down console makes game hacks extremely difficult. -
