- c0mputar, on 09/28/2008, -0/+79Starcraft "helped bring South Korea out of an economic depression."
dugg. - kinseyincanada, on 09/28/2008, -2/+59Bawls? really this is something that can be stacked along the lines of the PS2, NES and Goldeneye?
- Crash1337, on 09/28/2008, -2/+52dugg for not being spread across 10 separate pages.
- Shabow, on 09/28/2008, -1/+16You left out something:
Super Mario Bros. - smacksaw, on 09/28/2008, -4/+17#20 WASD: That's admitting you're really young! To me, WASD is what player 2 used to navigate and IJKM is what player 1 used to navigate.
#13 2600/ET: I would love to know where all of those copies of ET are buried and go there with a video camera and a shovel and try to recover them.
#10 Game rentals: I also think that a lot of games that might have put developers/publishers out of business were given new life by this. They mention Final Fantasy saving Square's bacon. I worked at a video store back in the day. People didn't really buy that game as much as they rented it, ran out of time and then bought it. That happened often with good games. I often look at the lack of selection with game systems today and while I acknowledge that development times eat into the possible numbers of games produced, on-line distribution only gives you a taste of a game. When you play it for a long time and can't beat it? Or don't get tired of it? Then you go buy it. That's the REAL "trial" version. We just don't get games that way anymore. Now, with Gamefly you can just keep it until you beat it/tire of it, but you don't even go and own it.
#4 Doom: Doom? Wolfenstein 3D.
#1. The internet: Totally agree about Microsoft missing the point about free online play. I used to play Maplestory on PC and there's all of these private servers that are killing it. Nexon, the publisher, screwed up the game and has piss poor customer service. Instead of licencing private servers, people hack the game to make their own anyway. Proof that the "free" model is what people want. They'd be smart if they just sold a copy of server software and charged for updates. But whatever. - MrDoug, on 09/28/2008, -2/+14One phrase...
"All your base are belong to us!" - Joudoki, on 09/28/2008, -1/+12What about digital distribution, and steam? I'd consider it a major evolution if not in the way games are played but the way they're distributed...
- darkphenox, on 09/28/2008, -0/+10They didn't include the backstabing of Sony by Nintendo, the gaming world would be completely different if that did not happen, Nintendo 64 would have had a disk drive (hopefully) from the start Sega would still be a big developer, Sony might not even still have been a console developer, so many things would be different.
- TheScotsman1980, on 09/28/2008, -1/+10A straight to the point list article, all on one page. Nice.
- nynety, on 09/28/2008, -1/+9How the hell are you gonna use the mouse? WASD is just for *one* hand.
- iXneonXi, on 09/28/2008, -0/+8United States should use Starcraft to solve the economic crisis.
- goffy59, on 09/28/2008, -3/+11Doom definitely deserves to be there. For you console kiddies who don't think so, learn to use a computer; you will understand.
While you guys played 2d games, I was playing 3d games on a much faster computer that didn't require cartridges and I could copy them in case they got deleted or lost somehow. - WestonP, on 09/28/2008, -0/+8Good, but get rid of Bawls and add Wolf3D
- Abomonog, on 09/28/2008, -0/+7I totally agree with the way Quake is placed in the list. The game introduced 3 of the most used features in PC gaming today. On top of that it's one of the few games out there that came with a built in CD player (command line based). Virtually all modern games use something that was first introduced in Quake.
- cobainirvana, on 09/28/2008, -0/+6Doom and Crysis did different things for the gaming genre. Doom is and always will be the greatest thing on earth, but Crysis is revolutionizing the graphical aspect of pc games. Doom 3 looked real in 04, but Crysis is approaching the "better looking than real life" status. Gamers have been promised even better graphics for the sequel. Crysis has the potential to be as revolutionary as Doom.
- kinerry, on 09/28/2008, -2/+7wolfenstein3d
- goffy59, on 09/28/2008, -0/+5Doom was an original. Crysis is another spin off of the FPS genre. Dugg though. Lol
- benighted, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4and don't mention how many games were made base on quake3' engine
- dekuscrub, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4I know everyone will be screaming "Wolf 3D" but for many people (including myself) Doom was their first FPS. I did not even know what an FPS was before Doom.
So yeah I agree. Doom deserves to be there. - OropheR, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4To pay to play online sucks. Guild Wars model of game is the way to go. WOW, Eve-Online (etc) are total rip off !
- kibbled, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Hawaiian Pizza Sandwich? I'm intrigued. Where does one purchase such a meal?
- inactive, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Why? PS1 had 3d platforming before Mario64
- warsongs7, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Agree with you on Bawls.
- Darkangel754, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3How the hell does that work?
- kibbled, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Instead of Starcraft and E-sports it should be Battlenet and Steam.
What made Starcraft and Diablo huge was the free online gaming service that is still active today even tho it has been over a decade since the game has been released.
Valve's steam is what digital media should be. I can buy a game over the service and not worry about losing it if I have to re-format my hard drive. I once had Steam off of my computer for a couple of months because of a reformatting and reinstalled it because Half Life episode 1 was coming out. I installed Steam and got all my games back within minutes.
I think this author did a top 20 of games but I think there are bigger things that happened in the industry. - mstachiw, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3that was as entertaining as a sandwich
- Peko, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3I'm not disagreeing but maybe the inclusion of Bawls is just a tip of the hat towards "external" changes... like, uh, Bawls represents how gaming culture made advances into general consumer culture outside of hardware/software.
- inactive, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Neither of your examples were considered successes, meaning PS1 brought CD to both the mainstream masses and the developer masses
- Vikaas, on 09/28/2008, -1/+4You're right. Buried.
- dykast, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2Dugg for 3dfx box! People need to remember gl-quake and the original voodoo add on card as the beginning of 3d graphics for the PC.
- TrevorBelmont, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2There were a bunch of FPS's before DOOM (as evidenced by all the Wolf3D references above). DOOM didn't start it but it legitimized it and made it mainstream. It made such a huge leap in graphics, fluidity, atmosphere and immersion that it inspired an FPS explosion.
A lot of people on here seem to think that the credit should go to Wolfenstein over DOOM because it was so popular first. I think DOOM deserves all the credit. I knew so many people who upgraded their CPU just to be able to play it or to have it run better. People in the gaming community knew and loved Wolf3D but EVERYONE knew about DOOM. People may have forgotten (or are too young to remember) that DOOM made national news for weeks. It terrified parents with it's "hyper realistic" bloody graphics and satanic themes.
IDSPISPOPD - Darkangel754, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2Microsoft doesn't host the game server, you have to host them yourself.
- kinerry, on 09/28/2008, -3/+5wrong, wolfenstein 3d
- 68024, on 09/28/2008, -1/+3No mention of the C64???
- inactive, on 09/28/2008, -1/+3I see we've been advertised bawls. Bawls has had 0 influence on the gaming industry. Buried.
- IndustrialJones, on 09/28/2008, -1/+3They should have given credit to some of the people behind the scenes. Like Shigeru Miyamoto for giving us Mario or Ken Levine's work on Bioshock. Things like the internet or caffeine drinks are too obvious of an influence. It's like saying gas is the greatest influence to the internal combustion engine.
- ry4nsm1th, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2Have no fear, SC2 will be out soon (I hope)!
- cobainirvana, on 09/28/2008, -1/+3Dugg for one page!!
- saikyan, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2Hmm... I've had some pretty entertaining sandwiches. Hawaiian Pizza Sandwich for example.
- Moodswung, on 09/28/2008, -1/+3I love the power glove, it's so bad.
- saikyan, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1They make them at this little family-owned place called Freddies. It's in Berwyn, if you're familiar with the Chicago area. Toasted french bread with marinara sauce, cheese, fresh pineapple, onion and bacon. Delicious!
- AmazingSteve, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1Shareware FTW! It used to be a GREAT way to buy games.
- simmin, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1How about a Jill Sandwich?
- ragingflamerboy, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Weird. 2 'best of lists!' that weren't *****.
Colour me surprised. - robbiedo, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1Personally, I thought it was a "ballsy" inclusion. Agree with @Peko.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1The first multiplayer game I ever played over the Internet was Quake.
- WhoopteyDoo, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1I believe the copies of ET are buried in southern New Mexico, exactly wherein I can't quite recall.
- JForceGames, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1They left out JForce.
- chaosblade77, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1I think the N64 was the most influential thing to happen to the gaming industry. Had Nintendo used a disc-based console rather than a cartridge based console, EVERYTHING about gaming would be different now.
The PlayStation wouldn't have become nearly as popular as it was since PS staples like Final Fantasy and Metal Gear would have remained on Nintendo's console, aside from the fact the N64 was technically about a generation ahead of the PS1 anyway. The results could have been so devastating for Sony that their console was a failure like so many other companies attempts. If it were less popular than the N64, MS could have been swayed from entering the console market since it was still being ruled by game-only companies.
Had the PS2 not been released, or had it's initial popularity and hype been a lot lower due to the PS1 being less popular, the Dreamcast probably would have been successful and Sega would still be a console maker. Nintendo's console wouldn't use minidisks and would have likely been the most popular console of the generation due to previous generation success and the fact it had more powerful hardware and, aside from DVD playback, more to offer than the PS2 (at least, early-gen). As mentioned above, the Xbox might not even exist.
Then that puts us in this generation. The PS3 would probably be nothing like it is today - had it not been for some arrogance on Sony's side, there's absolutely no way they'd price a console at $500+ at launch. Nintendo most likely wouldn't have disrupted the market with a Wii-like console. And Sega would most likely have released a console as early as 2004. - Feldon, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1he forgot Halo Halflife ans WoW and the gaming PC
