- modsuperstar, on 10/12/2007, -18/+118Clearly. Guess people like having actual games to play on their handhelds.
- Apox89, on 10/12/2007, -6/+82Right because the ps3 really draws parallels to handheld competition.
- neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -12/+51the PSP tries to be the jack of all trades... and in the end... ends up trading salt.
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -16/+41I think it's clear the DS has more mass appeal to anyone by now, but I still love my psp. The thing does a little bit of everything which is pretty perffect for me personally, it's just a techy gadget that happens to play some games right now.
- Wolfbeta, on 10/12/2007, -8/+32Of course it's better.
I really wanted to like the PSP. Waited for it with great anticipation. 2 years later, I still can't care less.
Maybe once MGS: Mobile Ops is out, and if the PSone game rumor holds true and I can play FF7.
After stealing my girlfriends DS whenever she's not looking. I've come to appreciate the damn little thing. I even went as far as pre-ordering my own DS Lite. - MightyGiant, on 10/12/2007, -9/+30Well we don't know that yet. Sony's still got a lot of time to steal ideas.
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -29/+45When I play pocket pool, my unit is very expandable.
- Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19DS sucks, I'm broke spending money on all the great games for it.
- Cbeck527, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18At first I bought a DS because I loved the concept of the touch screen. After I heard that the PSP would have better graphics, I was quick to jump to that and sold my DS (bad). Later, after I found myself playing with my sister's DS more than my PSP, I decided to go out and preorder my own DS lite.
I dont know what it is, but I really find the DS more fun than the PSP. - ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Best part of the entire article:
"In fact, it's clear from looking at this mid-May chart, and other recent Japanese charts, that the market is seeing something of a recovery after a long-term slow decline - and it's a recovery being led almost entirely by Nintendo, whose multi-million selling DS titles are pumping new life into a business which was becoming accustomed to a procession of endless flash-in-the-pan hits that struggled to break the half-million mark."
Gee, what has Nintendo been saying for the last 1.5 to 2 years? Oh, right, everything covered in that paragraph. - lock720, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17The 2.5 million refers to the number of DS and DS lite units sold in Japan since January of this year.
For reference, the PSP has sold around 800 thousand units so far this year in Japan. - Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I think that's 10 million PSP's shipped. Which is what sony always does to make it seem like they sold a ton. In japan the CLEAR winner is DS by far. In the US, well I'm going by what I've seen around town, and I don't hardly know anyone with a PSP but quite a few with DS's.
- bryant, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16Super Mario Bros. 64 DS, and Tetris DS are good...
Brain Age is neat too. - Wolfbeta, on 10/12/2007, -10/+18Definitely recommend picking up New Super Mario Bros. That was ultimatly my deciding factor. I liked Warioware too.
- cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Have you read the article? Probably not...
"2,498,720 units of DS hardware had been sold in the region by May 21st, with 1.635 million of them being the new DS Lite console, and 863,000 being the original DS console - meaning that the DS has the top two hardware slots so far this year.
Sony's PSP trails the DS by a huge margin, with only 772,000 units sold compared to the 2.49 million clocked up by Nintendo's system - and it's clear that the year to date has been all about handhelds, with the PS2 managing only 663,000 new sales in the first six months of the year." - JimEthanol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It's all about choice and personal preference. Nintendo is a great game company and always has been. They're innovative and have always had broad appeal. They've also had some of the best commercial success with relatively meager (some would say inferior) hardware. When the GameBoy first came out, the Atari Lynx and TurboGraphix express were superior hardware, yet the GameBoy trounced them both and today the format is second to none in terms of units sold.
Personally I like the PSP. I have one and I love it. But I'm not in the Nintendo demographic. I appreciate their creativity and talent, but I prefer to play games like GTA, Syphon Filter, and Burnout rather than Mario Kart and Nintendogs. Same thing with the GC (I prefer PS2) and I assume the Wii... Mario has pure gameplay but the PSP and PS2 / 3 bring a level of immersion and realism that gamers like me crave.
As an aside the hardware is great and the PSP is a hackers dream! Each to his own! ;) - lame_duck, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Kind of funny you say that because all the people I see with a PSP are prepubescent boys that get a kick out of the whores on GTA.
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8The PSP isn't a gaming device. It's a portable media device. Gaming is just a secondary function.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9If DS is for kids why are they selling millions of units to senior citizens in Japan and America? How come everyone I know over the age of 16 with a handheld, owns a DS?
Only kids play mature games because they want to be mature. Adults play "kid" games because they want to have fun. - eleven, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Pre-ordered my DS lite last week. Also bought New Super Mario Bros and Mario 64 DS, I figure once the DS lite is released some games will be very hard to find. I also plan to get Mario Cart DS ASAP! You have to hand it to Nintendo, the single cartridge multiplayer and WIFI online gaming really show that they're serious about us - the people who play the games!
The DS lite and New Super Mario Bros are just what I was waiting for! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9how many has each sold in the US?
- Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Way to be a copy cat for Sony's PR department. That's 10 million shipped, not sold. oh and I almost forgot my extra ..............................................'s.
- rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8animal crossing its a nice and addictive game.
- pbjorge12, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Yes...I agree...The GP2X is great...
I get about 5 hours of battery life off 2 2500 mah AA batteries...
I can play Xvid and DivX movies, emulators and games, and music!
And it is cheaper than the PSP and uses SD cards rather than memory stick...
And I forgot to mention a very decent playstation emulator...Right now it can play Final Fntasy 7 at about 18 FPS at all times... - daRoach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I like how the guy suggesting that he was going to steal gets plus diggs and the guy suggesting he pay for it gets minus diggs.
- happyfundave, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12From the little I've played of the DS i love it. They DS lite's finally arived at the sears i work at, i almost stole one.
- Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Everyone I know who does own a PSP (not that many) really don't play it that often.
Just watch this video, real PSP owners talking about their PSP's. Not a set up, most of them don't really use it for games anymore. It's a sad video.
http://www.gamespot.com/features/6152212/index.html?autoplay=6152260 - Akram, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I've got a DS with all those three games....and i must say even though they are remakes.....they are absolutely amazing. Only nintendo could pull of such a move.
- steveoa3d, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I bought a DS Lite today, will have it Sunday. Never owned a DS non-lite, last hand held game was a merlin in the 70's. I played the Non-Lite DS and I'm very impressed ! I fear that my wife will love Tetris DS so much we will be getting another DS soon...heh
- Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I saw that, too bad they don't keep track of sales as well in other areas. I think DS is edging out PSP in most other areas as well.
- satori3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3true enough. My friend works in 3d animation and he says that the PSP is great to pull out and show movies of his stuff without having to haul around his laptop. He can pull it out on set for story boarding as well.
- satori3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2seeing as you already have one you should check out both Daxter and Syphon Filter. Both are solid games.
- canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2PSP tries to be a home console in a pocket... this has always been a mistake. People want simple, pick it up and play it games for handhelds, games that you can play for 5 minutes here or there. They also don't want to pay full price (ie. $49+) for a handheld game when their primary gaming is on the console and those games are that expensive.
The DS gets it right. Innovative controls and screens, simple "pick 'em up" and play 'em games, and ok pricing both for the unit AND the games. - chickentonight, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Warioware is great. MarioKart is great.
Advance Wars DS is good. Metroid Prime: Hunters is good. Brain Age is good.
Nanostray is crap.
I'm still looking for a meaty RPG (from a PC gamers perspective). Recommendations? - codyc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5What metric would you say is a better judge?
- Akram, on 10/12/2007, -13/+15the fact that the psp has around 24 buttons on it and the ds has like 10.......its the same as the ipod vs other mp3 players.
its simplistic and easy to use....the PSP requires stupid updates, does all these features you dont want, costs a bomb, has no games, uses a dumb format, has loading times worse than a 566mhz computer installing xp and requires retarded memory sticks that are more expensive than games.
btw.....is it me or are there a ridiculous number of job advertisements on the side for gaming companies? - bede, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Mario Kart as others have said. Also Elektroplankton (the reason I bought a DS in the first place) and Metroid Pinball (don't laugh!)
- ryllharu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Meteos - hands down the best puzzle game I've played since Tetris, a must have on the DS
Kirby: Canvas Curse - highly addictive and completely takes advantage of the stylus
And to top out the weirdness factor:
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - An overly dramatic courtroom drama game. How can you go wrong?
Feel the Magic: XY/XX - Like warioware, but HARD. I cannot stress how tough this game gets so quickly. The weirdest game I've ever played. - SoulMaster2, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10Although you may not believe it, the PSP has it's fair share of good games. And quite a bit of them, too
- ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yes, I have a PSP and I want DS badly, especially after they release the DS Lite. I regret the day I ever bought that damn thing. Sure GTA is fun, Lumines is fun, but the fun stops there.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2btw.....is it me or are there a ridiculous number of job advertisements on the side for gaming companies?
Nah it's just you, google profiling must know that you are a ***** hot developer. It knows that I'm a freakin' mug who might be drawn in by "Free Xbox 360" and "1000s of Nintendo Wiis to give away" - tayman26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2People always engage in debates with whatever may interest them. It's simply natural. If you enjoy the topic and have something to say, join in. Otherwise, let it be.
- Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I've worked on two PSP games. Depsite that, I never managed to get a PSP into my house. Three kids in the house and they all have DS's. And when their friends come over they always have DS's. They sit and chat at each other.
We'll probably have three more DS's in the house before we have a PSP. - joseph93, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4When I got the PSP, I was like. Bye bye kiddie DS! Now after Sony is stopping any type of homebrew, they are going off my list of game companies. The games sorta suck. I accidentally upgraded to 2.7, wanting to try out the flash. I made a huge mistake. :-( No more cheat device for GTA! I think they spend more time trying to patch up the holes for homebrew then trying to come up with new ideas and fun new games. I am going to try to get a DS lite since it just looks so nice and with the new fun games coming out! I can't wait :)
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Sales charts are released about that often, so yes.
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9Why not ring yourself up?
- trekkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just curious, but do you mean the friends come over and use pictochat to talk to each other instead of words?
- spacemanspork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm pretty sure the DS sells better in the US too, all for the same reasons.
Honestly when I first saw both systems at E3, I thought, "wow Nintendo is screwed." The PSP is one fine piece of hardware. The downsides are lower battery life and long load times. Both are forgivable. The system appearance looks great, the graphics are very nice, and the screen is huge. Then you look at the original DS. Unwieldy. Ugly. Graphics aren't very impressive whatsoever. Touch screen is a nice gimmick but it's just a gimmick right? Sony had this one in the bag!
Fast forward a few months. I started to notice that Nintendo was releasing a lot of games that were pretty fun and Sony was really lagging. I played Tiger Woods golf on the PSP and it was relatively fun. I played Mario Kart on the DS and whoa, that game was just way too fun. I wasn't planning on getting a next gen portable, but after playing Mario Kart, I started considering getting a DS. I then tried Mario Kart multiplayer and then the New Super Mario multiplayer and holy crap, I knew I had to get one.
As of now, I preordered a DS Lite. It's a total no brainer for me since I want a gaming system, not a media system (I have a laptop and an iPod for that). For the DS Lite I'm interested in getting: WarioWare, Advance Wars, Mario Kart, New Super Mario, Brain Age, Trauma Center. For the PSP I'm interested in getting... Hmmmmm... Silent Hill Origins but that's not coming out for a while. And spending 200+ bucks on a system for one game?
The DS is a clear winner as a portable gaming system until Sony gets off their ass and puts out awesome proprietary games for the PSP. - lame_duck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Ummm... Hunters is diffreent from SMB which is diffrent from AC: WW
So tell me, what is "style" in your book? - redivider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It'll probably hit 3 million very soon, with the DS lite coming out next week.
