- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+39I cannot STAND when developers release screenshots at such ridiculous resolutions to online outlets. Yes, they are great for print but they're not really representative of the game if you display it on a screen - I'd rather see it at 1280x720 as that's what most HDTV's will render it at.
Same goes to you EA, I didn't realise PSP could output 3200x1800 until I saw your screenshots of Madden NFL 07. - kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38it looks like some one druled all over him, and rolled him in sand, there is WAY too much normal mapping, I don't think that was a great shot, but before you burry me, look at this image, I think its a MUCH better representation of Halo
http://xs109.xs.to/xs109/06464/halo3_200611_19.jpg - spiffyfitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27I'm sorry but I think that's a little bit overdoing the "wet and bumpy" bumpmapping we've seen in recent games.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30Yeah, because you stare at yourself in actual gameplay.
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Good resolution BUT.. It's just run o' the mill bump mapping... Nothing that exciting (Doom III anyone)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24You've scaled that to 720 lines in height (a still image cannot possibly be p or i), not 1080.
- kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17anyway here are some more images, don't know where they came from, don't know if they will go down, so get them while you can:

- toshipaine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Is it me or does Master Chief's suit look like it was made from Frog skins??
- XxN3RDC0R3xX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Hehe.. it looks like there's moss growing all over his armour.
- jblade, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Great SS, but it appears to me that Master Chiefs armor is just plastic?
- Djarum, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14You know I am going to get dugg down for saying this but I am just not impressed in the least by the shot. There is alot of weird texturing and modeling on Master Chief (Look at his hand for one thing, thats just lazy!and the effects are a more than a little overboard. I am not entirely sure where they have the light sources coming from as light does not do that in nature. Also look at the texturing in the background, that is worse than what I saw in Halo 2.
Not a real good promo shot to show off to the public. - nmcglennon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Looks like any other Halo game. Only higher resolution.
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10oh let me guess, there's going to be real-time damage, impressionable environments, and stealthy (shoot lights and stuff) just like they promised with halo 2?
- xerus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Needs more out of control bloom and depth of field blurring.
- w0rd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I think there is a traditional power button on his gun.
- Rayor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6As far as I know, that's the power symbol used on many modern electronic equipment.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_symbol - sato, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8damn you would think they could at least sand down master chief's armor before they gave it to him.
- achew22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Why does his gun have a glowing green "on" button? That to me is something I would want like my Internet -- always on.
- necroticbudz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Saftey first man!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Nice screenshot, but call me crazy...how's the gameplay? No one notices all the fancy HDR and bump mapping when they're actually running and gunning.
Sorry, I'm a gamer purist. I've been playing games of one kind or another since 1978. I learned at a young age that gameplay is paramount. This carried over into console and PC gaming. - gaijintendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Try not to get too annoyed. Game developers only release screenshots for publicity. This traditionally means print, and high res photos means the publisher is free to use the photos in any way they want during editing without the games looking like mince.
- Aldrenean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Definitely some out-of-game post-processing going on here... I have no doubt that it was rendered in the engine and that that's the real model, as the previously mentioned gloves, textures and other things give it away, but this is almost certainly cleaned up in PS. Notice the bloom? That's not your standard bloom, that looks like a selective glow mask. And the shadows on his left shoulder are ridiculously detailed for the amount of HDR/Bloom they are flaunting. Combine those with the overly detailed reflection on the faceplate and you've got either post-proc touchups or a development team putting WAY more time into some areas of the graphics than others. (Doom 3 anyone? :P )
- opnickc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Why am I underwhelmed? I mean, the HDR is nice, and the textures and stuff are certainly better than last-gen. But. . . it's not blowing me away.
I feel the same way about the Call of Duty 3 commercials I've been seeing. They go so far as to write "Actual Gameplay" on the screen. But I'm not impressed. The framerate is low, the animation is as unrealistic as last-gen, the explosion effects looked like crap.
I was honestly more impressed by the Wii version, simply because I didn't think the Wii could handle the destructible environments without any slowdown. Yeah, the textures were muddier, and the trees were pointy. But the animations were just as good, and seeing the gun move on screen in tandem with the player was awesome.
Looks do matter. It'd be nice if these "next-gen" HD games actually looked good. I'm still amazed that the weakest system seems to be the only one without framerate issues. - sybersnake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5the gun looks like plastic
- pile0nades, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The old assault rifle was the MA5B, the new one is the MA5C.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3EVERYTHING looks like plastic!!
- Larke2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4psyche.
- Xorp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm really not impressed by Halo 3's graphics. My PC could easily pull of its visuals.
Looks like all they did was cover Master Chief's model with sloppy pixel shaders.
Now Gears of War... no way my PC could do that. - korimickster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"a still image cannot possibly be p or i"
Dude, the point is that a still image CAN be progressive or interlaced. He has like +20 diggs on an incorrect statement. - NeoPlatonist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I agree, the picture quality is secondary to gameplay. Many of my favorite games are on the Super Nintendo with it's blazing 3.58 Mhz processor and 512×448 resolution.
- edmondsonj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I guess we are back to the old Assault Rifle!
- Thors1982, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3say what you will about the graphics but those of you that thing its lookds the same as halo 2 are absolutely stupid.
- SonicPower, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5To be honest, it is pretty bland compared to Gears of War.
Of course, it is unfair to judge this game as what it is now since it's a prealpha build. The background textures are just yuck. - championchap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2cheap bin bag recycled plastic armor
and i can count the polys in the pipes in the bottom right.. wish they would have spread the poly count a little more so its not quite so ridiculously chief obcessed.
and the bump mapping.. high.. too high.
you CAN overuse effects you know? - evilspoons, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2*Yawn*, it looks like someone took Halo 2 and doubled the bump-map resolution. Everyone in prerendered CG learned that cranking bump maps up to make things look "shiny" is the lazy way out about 10 years ago. Now we just need to wait for it to happen again for realtime 3d graphics...
- Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15120x2880... doesn't sound very ingame to me...
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7This makes me even happier that I reserved my legendary edition the day I picked up Gears of War.
- korimickster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Actually, you are wrong. An image can, in fact, be progressive or interlaced when taken from video. Video editors have to deal with this all the time. Standard 29.97 NTSC video has terrible interlacing problems. This is a random Google image that does a great job explaining the problem visually:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b203/krnbanguboi/interlace.jpg
Now take that into Photoshop or Final Cut and apply the de-interlace filter. - hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This reminds me of the Zelda TP images that were waaay larger than the Wii could ever have displayed. Pretty, but come on.
- djuniah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that could very well be rendered "ingame" just not "ingame running on a 360". You have to realize that the xbox is directX based so on the dev kits (PC based) they can probably run a render at whatever rez they want. (im not saying that the framerate and everything else would be right, but its theoretically possible)(either that or they just did this mockup in maya or max with the character model and lighting effects that will be used ingame) Thats why some of the new zelda shots look REALLY high rez but the wii cant put out a high enough signal to match some of the shots released by nintendo
- zacmccormick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@korimickster
He meant the image itself isn't in a progressive or interlaced format. What you are talking about is an image that just happens to have pixels arranged in a way that looks like it was taken from an interlaced device. Completely different thing but nice try, the photoshop thing is just a post process filter, has nothing to do with the format. I know you already know this but you tried to make him look like an ass and you failed.
And the halo screen definitely looks better at low res. - seansshack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2looks faked allright. demo screen as res is too high!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like his armor has been eaten by termites!
- Supertrout, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Joygasm
- Fl00rMatt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3naw, its that rustic beat to ***** look. kinda like spending $100 for a pair of ripped, grass stained, ball squeezing jeans.
- Peeps, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Quake 3 didn't do actual curves either, they were bezier curve definitions tesselated at load time. It was a fun way to compress data and achieve a nice curved surface look. They simply spent more polygons on the level - obviously not on the character models.
- SSCrow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I personally think that Halo 3 is going to blow Gears apart.
The E3 trailer looks amazing, that is all in game. Bungie still has an entire year to make this the final epic chapter.
I think the image is amazing. The only little error that I see are the Hands have some awkward shading. But this is most likely their Alpha build.
Btw, If you read the Update on Bungie.net They state that this image is taken from In game. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Why do we still have to put up with non-curved surfaces??
Id overcame this in Quake 3 but apart from that game we still get these ***** looking octagonal pipes with sneaky textures to make them look curved!
If something as primitive as Q3 on a Celeron 400 with TnT2 can do curves, why can't a dual processor beast with dual 7950GX2 cards!!! - funkychikensays, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1tha graphics arent done
