"The story about 12 year old co-founder is a big oversell…I know because I broke the story on funding two days ago. The CEO Karl Mehta and Arjun’s dad is the real guy behind it…arjun just came up with part of the idea for it, and is not really involved with the business per se. Arjun’s mention on the site is a gimmick which will be rectified soon…the release doesn’t mention him and for good reason."
Doesn't appear the kid is involved with either the business nor software part of this software business. I don't see any evidence he is involved beyond his father taking his idea, running with it, and using his son as a mascot. - djSyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -0/+42Correction: his *parents* just got $6.5M. Minors aren't allowed to enter into contracts in the United States.
- Pingspike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+36Meh, gimmick for sure. Its all his dad's thing. The kids just the marketing angle. shallow.
- edge10, on 10/10/2007, -5/+40Apparently the kid is just a marketing gimmick:
http://venturebeat.com/2007/09/19/playspan-run-12- ... - allaboutdatiki, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2612? Twelve? My 13 year old is such a slacker.
- SniperXPX, on 10/10/2007, -6/+23Noob.
- edge10, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14Frickin digg cutting off the url
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9you regret not getting that Chinese orphan now, don't you?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11he means sexually - DUGG!
- MCam, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I don't like parents who use their children to get rich/richer.
- breakspirit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I have noticed this submitter has posted lots of totally ***** and/or extremely lame articles.
- gamegenie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7here's the part that was cut off: playspan-run-12-year-old-ceo-gets-65m-in-venture-capital
past that with the rest and get the article about this lame gimmick - mr_bako2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Definately a gimmick... noooooo doubt about that. Although, if anyone wants to send 6.5m my way to attract attention, go right ahead
- UberFuzzy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4someone should have told that to Sigil games while they attempted to make Vanguard
- mtrip, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4So you're going to steal 2 million from your own son?
- Kurisuku, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5You'd better jump his dad, the kid is a publicity pawn.
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4which is why any logical company would enter in the deal with his parents or a third-party who can be held responsible. I'm pretty sure no one would cry if they lost their $5 for a t-shirt, but if someone looses $6.5mil heads will roll.
- miggz06, on 10/10/2007, -6/+106.5 million!! WTF is a kid gonna do with that much money? Buy the world's biggest jolly jumper? Wait a sec...
- BionicPimp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I'm probably wrong, but I think that minors can enter contracts...it's just that the contracts cannot be enforced. eg. if you enter into a contract with a minor, and the minor holds up his end of the bargain, you can't just screw him over and expect the courts to let you get away with it. If it is the other way around, I think the courts will let a minor get away with screwing over the other guy. The only reason I say this is that when I was 15, I had a tshirt company, and I would do contracts for custom tshirt runs. when I was 19, I took my first business law class, and i was shocked...shocked i say...to learn that I couldn't actually be held accountable for my actions. If i'd only known then what I know now...
ps. IANAL, any lawyers in the house. please join the thread, as I've always wondered about this specific situation - kedohmen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That's how I got out of my Columbia House CD thing back in 97. They called me and said I owed them money for the cd's I got because I didn't order any more after the 1 cent deal thing, I told them that they were SOL cause I was then 17 and when I signed up for the CD club I was only 14 and I didn't have to pay them anything.
I've never heard from them since. - xero69, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Sounds like the same ***** study/data governor Rick Perry tried to pass off as "fact" to get Texans to pass legislation making these shots nearly mandatory. I doubt this would be a problem if parents would simply TALK to their children about condoms and sex, but noooo.....
- KingGorilla, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2he's like their myspace tom
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I totally fell for their marketing scam.
- perry753, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3link dead?
- kingkilr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They can enter into contracts, they just aren't 2 way legally binding.
- HUKI365, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3His dad (who runs the company) will invest it in the company. That's what you do with venture capital.
- emjaymj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think it's rare that a programmer of any language understands anything completely. All the languages I've learned have been on a need-to-know basis.
- Ihavethespeed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2***** you. you piece of worthless ***** go burn.

- h0zae, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2All I wanted was to digg this story, and I was prompted with - "Cool, this story has already been submitted.
Digg the story yourself to make your vote count." - I promise, I did not submit this story. - emjaymj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's not like it's free money. The more money you get from them, the more of your company you have to give up, so it makes sense to only get as much financing as you need. That being said, if they, as shareholders, agree to finance you for 6.5m, and you try to draw an unspent 4m, that would almost definitely be theft. Venture capitalists don't give you the money to keep. It's an investment into the company and they expect it to be spent as such - or at least retained. If you tried to keep this money, they would be very unhappy to say the least.
- Dracusis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1So it's inaccurate yet people are still digging it...
Ooooh look, a digg button... *clicks*
Err, oops. - blech, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1mirror anyone? its already dugg

- jollyholly, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1>> PlaySpan started in Arjun’s garage in Silicon Valley in 2006 and was incorporated with Arjun’s earnings from selling online game items won from quests he fought while attending 5th grade at Challenger School in San Jose.
Sure beats working for a living.. - obiethedog, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1And as for yourself?
I'm sure you have already made several million dollars....right? - nhassan, on 10/10/2007, -11/+6i'd jump the kid.
- murty, on 10/10/2007, -12/+4software programming at 12? man i'm 19 and still haven't fully got my head around html :P
- DarkDx, on 10/10/2007, -9/+1I don't have any kids (I'm just 15), but If in the future my underage son gets money like this I wont be an *****, I will tell him "what do you want to do with the money?" of course he would like to help with the house and family But I'm not leaving him without any penny. If we spend, let's say, 2 out of 6 millions before he turns 18, he can be sure that he's going to get those 4 remaining.
- inghamb87, on 10/10/2007, -16/+4***** this guy must be a total machine. Oh well I'm sure if we gave him a wedgie he wouldn't be so powerful!
