- longhair, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31I won't pay that much money for a hard drive.. I'm hoping in a few months they drop it some.

What really sucks is that if you want to use your own, you have to do a lot of work, unlike the easy plug and play hard drive swapping of the PS3. But hey, at least you can save $100 by doing it yourself:
http://digg.com/gaming_news/TheSpecialist_s_HDDHackr_v0_90_Upgrade_Xbox360_with_cheap_120GB_PC_drive - ghostlywind, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12$180 way to expensive, thats more than a $1 a gig. I would pay $120.
- Philodox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I have a hard time believing MS will drop the price by $80 for two reasons:
1) I've never seen a console go down in price by $80. Doesn't mean it can't happen, it's just completely unprecedented.
2) So long as the 360 is selling faster than the PS3 they have no incentive to drop the price. Right now MS is breaking even/making a small profit on every console. Whereas Sony is taking it hard from a burly black man on every console sold. So long as Microsoft doesn't start losing market to the PS3 they have no reason to reduce the price. Oh, and I'm sure any MS exec worth his parking spot knows they can't compete with the Wii on price. - spielen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I saw ~10 of the 120GB HDs at the Wal-mart in my tiny hometown.... I didn't realize they were in the "spotted in the wild" phase of existence.
- Ace25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7TheSpecialist sent xbox-scene.com the update of HDDHackr many of you were probably waiting for. With the release of an official 120GB drive by Microsoft you can now use this tool to make your own 120GB Xbox360 HDD using a Western Digital Scorpio BEVS-LAT drive (that's a cheap (~80usd for 120GB) SATA 2.5" PC/laptop drive)
So if you have a 20GB currently, with a little reading and a few minutes of work you can stick in a replacement 120GB for about $100 cheaper than the official MS drive.
Oops, someone mentioned it already below me, my bad. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Sorry for the comment abuse. But this is just ***** blogspam.
Real article here at HardOCP, http://www.hardocp.com/news.html?news=MjUzOTYsLCxobmV3cywsLDE= - CanadianGeese, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14I wouldn't expect the price of the HDD to drop anytime soon, but I would expect a 360 console price drop across the board come this holiday season.
I've noticed that the pricing of the 360 is based off the following formula...
Core_Price + HDD_Price = Similar_Sku_Price
So, for example, if the Core is $300 and the 20GB HDD is $100, then the similar sku (Premium) will be $400. The Elite Price = Core Price + 120GB HDD Price.
Here is my guess for the 360 pricepoints come this holiday season:
Elite = $400
Premium = $320
Core = $220
This way, the Elite takes the price point of the Premium, giving you more for the same amount of money, while also dropping the price of the Core under the price of the Wii, all while still following that same pricing formula. - Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4For the hundredth time.
Yes, the hard drive is very overpriced.
But stop comparing the prices to regular old 3.5" bay drives. It is just plain stupid.
Compare them to... oh I don't know, stuff more like what MS uses for their 360 HD's?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2000150380+130971534+4017&name=%24100+-+%24200
Yes, I know that the prices are still a lot cheaper, but you also have to factor in you can just pull the 360's HD out, put another one in. Process done. No drivers, no installing, no screws, nothing.
I wouldn't pretend to say the 360's hard drives aren't overpriced, but if you want to actually compare storage/price, don't be a moron and use the big-sized hard drives. You just look like a fanboy.
Disclaimer: I'm not buying it till it's $1/gig or less. Probably less. I like the 360, but I'm not going to buy something that is stupidly overpriced. - tokyopimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Jesus I saw one two weeks ago at Wal-Mart, thinking they were out already... I should have taken a picture and sent to some dumb blog or something.
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4i've seen the 120GB drive in several stores now... how is this news?
$208 Canadian ... it can stay right where it is for that price. - TDR25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They're already out. I saw a few of them at Best Buy a few days ago.
- sirpwn4g3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How is this JUST NOW making this to digg? The HDD, controller, play n charge, and controller/play n charge bundle has been available for over a week now.
- CompanyMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wonder with the Hardware disc that comes with it if you could somehow burn it and use it in the Xbox 360 so you could just go out and buy a CHEAPER DRIVE. As all this hardware does it makes the Xbox260 config and transfer date to a bigger accepting drive correct
Wouldn't make sense just to go out and have someone burn the install DISC ?
Just a thought - pleve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's available on Sam's Club website for $163.88 (online only)
http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=368436 - iMaciMan1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i already have an elite, they were selling one at a kmart i was at.... http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/iMaciMan/0422071300-00.jpg?t=1177548675
- Ace25, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Are you not realizing this is a laptop drive and not a desktop drive? 2.5" Laptop drives have always been more expensive than 3.5" desktop drives. The biggest 2.5" drive I can find is a 200GB and is 5400RPM.
- themurph2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's one on ebay right now -
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=004&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&viewitem=&item=140110131785&rd=1&rd=1 - StandardsDT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What MS should do or at least eventually do is release a shell casing where you can swap in your own hard drive. They can still make a profit by including a 20 GB hard drive with it. Better yet why hasn't a third party manufacturer thought of doing this?
- MasterBeef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I believe MS said themselves that the accessories would be released a week before the Elite. I've seen the hard drive and black controller at Wal Mart since Friday.
- brivix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1one of the comments on that site says that one guy bought an elite and it didn't come with a transfer cable.. hmm
- Sixcolors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This Digg article is a link to a blog which links to another blog with a series of pictures of the transfer cable and software disc ONLY.
Buried as lame. - hartley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Isn't there anyway to format an sata notebook drive in fatx to use with the 360 instead?
$180 in a retail store for 120gb isn't that overpriced, but you can get a regular 2.5 sata drive SO much cheaper from ebay or newegg. - ShoulderKnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Saw these at Best Buy last week in NYC. They even had black controllers for $50. Waste of money for the HD upgrade. Only necessary if you plan on buy ton's of TV shows or movies on market place.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That little adapter alone is worth getting... I imagine with it, and the software, you'd be able to easily transfer your files to practically any hard drive you can fit into that external case.
- ragunax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I was at a Best Buy in Fairless Hills, PA two days ago and they had all of the black accessories in stock, and the new hard drive. I thought they got the system in, but they said it will be available on Sunday.
- xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Um, ya I saw these like last week at Circuit City no big deal.
- Hydroxyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because he got a new console.
I mean if HDMI is really /that/ important.
Generally new console is a new purchase of the system altogether, so that guy was just stupid in the first place really. - RedZeppelin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At that price they can keep it. I'll stick with my 20GB drive, thanks.
- NeoOfTheSith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EEZZkAAAVVpHxXqpYb.php
- Jinno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I've seen the black controllers and the 120GB at EB yesterday. I was picking up Pokemon Pearl, and I had absolutely no desire to drop $180 on a bigger HDD, nor did I have desire to pay for a controller that wouldn't match my console. oO;
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They're not out yet? My walmart has had them available for about a week now..
- phrstbrn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@powerlogic
A 3.5" drive != 2.5" drive (laptop drive)
The 2.5" drives have smaller platters and are a bit more expensive. Also, you can't find a 500GB 2.5 drive if you tried. The biggest consumer 2.5" drives are 200GBs.
As stated before, the drive is a little more expensive than your typical drive laptop drive. Personally, I don't want to mod my Xbox drive, but if you're up to it, go for it.
Edit: konrad9 beat me to it - underwearman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they wont
- ranex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my local wal-mart is aready selling elites- and the retail store i work for is selling the hard drives and the black controllers
- shimamoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ditto. I have a 360 and I won't care until there's a cheaper option (hacking a WD drive sounds promising though).
- Hoffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was in Gamestop yesterday to switch out my bad copy of Guiter Hero 2. They had a whole stack of the black controllers and play & charge kits. Didn't notice any 120 GB hdd though.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sigh.
I constantly have under 1gig free on the harddrive of my premium, but $180 is just way too much.
And please don't give me that "But the 20gig is $100, this is a bargain" argument, i've heard it a thousand times. Just because a 20gig drive at $100 is a giant ripoff does not mean a 120gig drive at $180 isnt a ripoff as well.
I would just go through the procedure to hack my own 120gig 2.5 sata drive to work with my 360 if I was not worried about the possibility of being banned from Live.
Allowing you to use your own harddrive was one really big thing that Sony did right with the PS3. Even the PS2's 40gig drive was the same price of the 20gig Xbox360 drive, and the PS2 drive came with a game as well. - DatoeDakari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Same here, idk what these guys are talking about. I thought, seeing as how I saw them in the store, they had already been released, I guess not:/
- Amadeus2490, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We'll all be able to use our own hard dirves on the 360 as soon as we find that blasted BIOS screen!
Hook a USB keyboard up to the console and press "DELETE" while it's powering up to enter setup. Then you can like, overclock it and change the hard drive.
/joking. - Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because from what I heard, the drives need to have a special signature on them so the 360 will recognize them, and reverse-engineering this would be a violation of the DMCA.
- hifiDesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw a couple of them in those blister-type packs at Target the other day, looking very lonely at the bottom of a glass case, so it must be a common thing.
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1idiot, laptop hdd=2.5", and a 120gb 2.5" hdd can be bought for LESS than $100. look it up on newegg.
this one is just $80
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136072 - Moltdar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can confirm i say them yesterday at Walmart up here in Quebec, Canada
- Xiledsavior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i work at best buy, the only thing with a street date is the actual console. this is not worth the digg.
- Philodox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Have you not heard of price gouging? How come Microsoft sells a $15 wireless adapter for $100 USD? Because they know people will be stupid enough to buy it.
- Yarnage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Idiot. 3.5" HD != 2.5"
- DJAzzurro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For the last time, this is NOT an early release. The Elite is scheduled for April 29, but all the accessories ARE NOT STREET DATED!!! That's right! If you see the Elite accessories in retailers, it's not because they're sneaking them out there, it is because THEY ARE ALLOWED TO SELL THEM.... JEEZE PEOPLE!
- Charron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@Philodox
Strange, I kinda think Sony is taking it hard from a little white guy, really... -
