- CharlesDarwin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30If he can't keep it up (his server,) he has no right to revoke anyone's geek license.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+34Jesus Christ... I visit digg about 2 times a day and every ***** time I come here, I see at least 3 articles on the front page titled "Best [x] Ever." For the love of God, please ***** stop with the "Amazing!" and the "Best Ever" and the "!!!!"
- A2Ska, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24Hurray for Settlers of Catan!
- cheifchuck0, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25longest. post reply. ever.
- MurderMystery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14What would be a better title name? "Here's a list of stuff. Look at it, and see what it is, and see if its any good."
- isemism, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Ill trade you 3 Sheep for an Ore.
- Calculusaurus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Dugg because all these games kick ass. Board games are the forgotten fun way to hang out with friends. If you haven't tried Carcossone yet, drop $20 for one and get a few friends together.
- Trebormojo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13No Risk, no digg

Only twice a day...pansy....god im a loser - Spo8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8But why not have a list of 10?
...Because my list goes to 11. - petroK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, but both risk and A&A are fairly mainstream...
great games and undoubtedly enjoyed by geeks far and wide, but if you don't have to go to a store with a clever name (Live and let Dice, Hairman of the Board, Rolling Stop) and a clerk with long hair, glasses an an inability to finish more than a sentence unless he is describing the latest (fill in the blank with RPG title) source book... it wouldn't fall into the category for the sake of this article. - BashiBazouk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Best ever? This list is more like modern eurogames 101. A few listed would make an all time list but none are older than a decade.
No Dune? No Cosmic Encounter? No classic Avalon Hill games?
I think your geek membership is in serious question here... - wjglenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Cosmic Encounter
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/15
The rule set is pretty simple, but the rules on the cards for the alien you play as override any conflicting rule in the basic rule set, lending some very interesting twists. One of the aliens is even a cheater, so stealing cards, etc. from the deck is actually encouraged.
Apparently now there's an online version. I'll have to check that out:
http://www.cosmicencounter.com/screens/home.html - sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven. - Styleboost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My favorite board games in no particular order:
Carcassonne (with all expansions)
The Settlers of Catan (with all expansions)
The Settlers of Catan Card game (2 players)
Elfenland
Hoity Toity
Illuminati
Axis & Allies
Skiensspillet (Grenland 4-ever)
Ticket to ride
Alhambra
Lost cities (2 players)
Junta! - scottc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No need to torrent Carcasonne, you can play it online for free here:
http://www.brettspielwelt.de
Lots of other good board games there too. - petroK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm a Catangelist
Anytime anyone comes to town I play Settlers with them. It comes with some hesitation for non-geeks/non-gamers. After the first game, they usually end up buying it in a few weeks so they can play with other friends.
All the other games on the list are great, but few rival Settlers for non-geek appreciation in my experience. - arcele, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree, no Risk, no Axis & Allies...come on those are pretty much the only board game that I'll bust out and play now....along with Monopoly (another no show that I can't be too disappointed about because it's not a geek only game), but Risk is certainly a 'geek' game.
- mointrigue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Where's "Diplomacy" on that list?????
- benplaut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'd consider the best geek games to be:
1) Awk
2) Sed
3) Emacs (tons of mini games!)
4) nmap
5) hping
6) ethereal/wireshark
7) driftnet
But then again, i'm a bit odd.
Seriously, nmap+ethereal+driftnet - Misanthrope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+210 is a lot, and 11 is even more.
- darlok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3can't get to the site...but

enjoy - CircusNinja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4strange, I made the EXACT same comment last week so some lame ass "Best ever football video" and got dug down into oblvion! :)
Guess my people skills are as bad as people say (but I totally agree with you!!) - Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Come on, even normal people play that! =P
- TylerDurden76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No Axis & Allies, no digg. That game almost requires a geek, due to setup time, and game length time. That's the only board game I still play and I love it. (Playing Germany and Japan FTW).
Also, what about Starfleet Battles (I think that's what it was called) that's totally a board game.
And technically shouldn't Pen and Paper games count? - Irfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WTF! primus? oingo boingo? kenny-g?
this list plain sucks - JeremiahLBurns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just to throw my two cents worth into the mix...
Pass the Pigs.

A hint: I've had the most fun playing this game at night and setting a high goal score...something like 500 or 1000. I can only imagine how much more fun this game can be if you add alcohol as a variable. - profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2FTA: "Also, if you found this article interesting please consider submitting it to Digg or Netscape or telling your friends. I’d love to know what they think too."
That seem like such a good idea in hindsight? (and thanks mehs for posting the text, otherwise couldn't see it.)
Good list, though. And I'd also like to submit "Lunch Money" for consideration.
http://www.atlas-games.com/product_tables/AG1100.php - an0nym0us, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what, no warhammer 40k?
- rahmad04, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1-retracted-
- nato64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2call me insane (people have) but i had to digg for all the aswesome references in just the discription. Spinal Tap, BSG... it game me a good laugh.
- toshipaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gulstar Sorceror of Light and Trogdor are my two favorites!
- camturner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The setup time and depth of rules eliminated it from the list. Remember, the definition said that it needed to be accessible to non-geeks to stay social. I'd class Axis and Allies as an excellent game.. but it's more in the nerd category due to the depth of rules.
- YmerejO42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Haven't read the list yet, but it had better include Outdoor Survival by Avalon Hill...
- Beaver6813, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fine then ill take my pass back then! Hmph
- turtlini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would add The Great Dalmuti to the After Party list. It can be hard to stop playing though.
- MikeDawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A Top 11 list is still a blog list:
http://www.bbspot.com/News/2006/08/five-reasons-you-should-not-link-to-blog-lists.html - MrDarkSim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember that one. From experience I can say yes that it does make an excellent drinking game.
- purplfunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Blokus FTW!!!
- tikistyle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I love all these games. A bunch of friends and I meet a coffee shop every Thursday night and play, with a live jazz band in the corner. It's a pretty sweet time.
We've been playing the Wii lately instead. Can you blame us? - dawtcalm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Catan Rocks. But as already said where's the RISK love!
Cranium is also a fun party game.
Axis and Allies is waaay tooo geeky. - Megaphone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fluxx, yes, Catan (especially Cities & Knights), absolutely. But where's Killer Bunnies. (Sorry, Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot)
- DiggsOnlyNeoCon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've got wood for your sheep.
- MillenniumX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not a bad list, but the author fails it for not mentioning the GIPF project, Icehouse, or Shadows Over Camelot.
- fcra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no Lunch Money?
- golgiapparatus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ohhh man, me 'n my friends used to play Munchkin during lunch in high school. That was FUN stuff.
- fatcatfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Polarity?
