- Awwzm, on 10/27/2009, -0/+63Super Mario 3?
- TheMeatball, on 10/28/2009, -0/+40Warcraft 2 was so far ahead of it's prequel it's ridiculous.
- coltrane68, on 10/27/2009, -0/+29Star Wars: Battlefront II was everything the first should have been. The series remains relatively unpopular, but if you want to feel like you are fighting in the Star Wars universe, this is really the only game that gets it right.
- samsmartjr, on 10/28/2009, -7/+33No way Final Fantasy 7 is better than Final Fantasy 6. The only reason why FF7 is so hyped is because it was the first produced for the Playstation, and so was the first of the FF games many people played. FF7 is so large and rambling that by the time I finished one area, I forgot where I came from before and where I needed to go next. And that doesn't even count the long and arduous Materia system. Ugh.
- jeffkarpala, on 10/28/2009, -1/+25Diablo 2!!
- angrytortilla, on 10/28/2009, -0/+16PS2? Come on, it's hardware...
- jackalsclaw, on 10/28/2009, -2/+17Team Fortress 2 was way better then 1
- Dervish108, on 10/28/2009, -0/+14TIE Fighter?
- AngryDeuce, on 10/27/2009, -5/+18No way was Fable 2 better then Fable 1.
- directedition, on 10/28/2009, -0/+13Sim City 2000?
- whiteyx, on 10/28/2009, -2/+15Baldur's Gate 2? They couldn't have used this instead of PS2?
- ripple01, on 10/28/2009, -0/+12Civilization II is still one of the best PC games of all time.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/27/2009, -1/+12Of course the PS2 was better than the original, it had way better games than the original. PS3 has a better kickass:***** game ratio than PS2.
- Schmidtopolis, on 10/28/2009, -0/+11Internet comments and video games... serious business.
- KalZakath, on 10/28/2009, -0/+9I tend to find that who like which game best tends to depend on which was played first; people who play VI first tend to prefer that and vice versa. To be honest, the Final Fantasy (main) series aren't really sequels of each other in anything but name, so they shouldn't be on this list. The sequels to VII and X were not all that great.
- diggerado, on 10/28/2009, -2/+11Dugg for Streetfighter 2. God I loved that game.
- jordanmoore, on 10/28/2009, -1/+9Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- kayfouroh, on 10/28/2009, -3/+11I was going to post the exact same thing.
You are 100% correct. FF6 > FF7. End of story. - Philosomatika, on 10/28/2009, -0/+8System Shock 2?
- plizard, on 10/28/2009, -5/+12wtf this article sucked.
- AdmiralAcbar, on 10/27/2009, -6/+13Really, the PS2 was better than the original playstation? No way! I bet the PS3 is even better than that, then.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/27/2009, -3/+10Most sequels are better than the original.
- TheMeatball, on 10/28/2009, -0/+6He wasn't trying to say the PS1 was actualyl better than the PS2.
He's saying it's incredibly obvious that the PS2 would be better than the PS1. That's the whole point of releasing a new console. - Apokalyps2547, on 10/28/2009, -0/+6Rogue Squadron II?
TimeSplitters 2? - Pyroteq, on 10/28/2009, -1/+7Halo 1 multiplayer is better than the multiplayer in Halo 2 and 3, even with the amount of downloadable content and customisation each of the sequels offer.
- spongya77, on 10/28/2009, -1/+7Of course the sequels are usually better in games. Because, unlike in the movie business they build on the first ones, correct the mistakes, and sell -essentially- the same product. Movies are much messier. Imagine a Terminator 2 movie with the same sorry, but better physics and visual effects...
- cquilliam, on 10/28/2009, -0/+6Not even close
- RTFMA, on 10/28/2009, -0/+5Ocarina of Time: one of the best ever, and a sequel in one of the best known franchises, and it's not on the list.
- vichussmith, on 10/28/2009, -0/+5I would like to point out that you are one person and that I said "most" not "all."
I'd also like to point out that after the FF VII hate, X comes next in line to Final Fantasy games people dislike. - samsmartjr, on 10/28/2009, -0/+5I never said the game was hard. It wasn't. Having to jump from one end of the planet to the other end on a mission that takes you so long to fulfill that you forget why you were there in the first place and can't remember how it connects to the next mission doesn't make it hard. It makes it arduous. And that is a false difficulty. So you aren't a better gamer than anyone else. It just means you have 1,000 extra hours to wade through all the relentless crap in that game. My fault for having a life, I suppose.
Also, I should point out that I learned how to beat Resident Evil 2 without dying once because I didn't have a memory card to save my files. So when I did die, I had to play it all the way from the beginning again. So don't talk to me about not being able to play difficult games. Long and arduous =/= Difficult and challenging. - Mujokan, on 10/28/2009, -1/+6Yeah, that was a bit random for this list...
- kingmanic, on 10/28/2009, -0/+5It's all down to personal tastes.
For me:
VI > XII > IV > X > IX > VII > I > VIII > iii > ii > V
I haven't ever played XI. - GalacticRerun, on 10/28/2009, -1/+6Streets of Rage 2. Oh the memories of playing that for the first time.
- directedition, on 10/28/2009, -0/+4That's not the end of story. You haven't explored all the side quests!
- lynkdead, on 10/28/2009, -0/+4Looking at this list made me think about all the game sequels I've played, and then the fact that the title didn't mention games and made me think the article was going to be about movies made me realize something else: Video game sequels are, overall, better than their predecessors, unlike most movie sequels. Obviously there are exceptions in both camps, but especially when you look at big budget titles (sports games excluded, lolfiftydollarsforarosterupdate) video game sequels tend to improve whereas movies usually simply cash in.
- SketchaMPM, on 10/28/2009, -1/+5I hate to be that guy but this list absolutely sucks.
- directedition, on 10/28/2009, -0/+4Indeed. Warcraft was more like a prototype. Warcraft 2 pretty much set the stage for everything that followed it.
- fanfablebig, on 10/28/2009, -0/+4The first Blood Rayne was pretty kick ass with the dismemberment cheat. and I don't think many people know about the PS2 game Blood Rayne, just the ***** uwe boll film. And I refuse to capitalize his name.
- vichussmith, on 10/28/2009, -1/+5If you read the internet long enough, you learn that everyone hates everything. ***** the internet.
- flickr, on 10/28/2009, -3/+7I think you're confused, each subsequent use of the Halo name has meant a less fun game.
- aleatoric, on 10/28/2009, -0/+4This article is making me rage. I enjoyed RE1 way more than RE2. Both were solid games but RE1 got it right the first time... creepy, cryptic mansion riddled with enigma and zombies and who who knows what else. All of the RE games after that have failed to capture that feeling I had when I played the first. Maybe it's just a "first time" nostalgia I can't get back. Maybe if I played RE2 first, I'd like it better. I don't know. But the gameplay between RE1 and 2 isn't a vast change; it's still pretty much the same formula. So really it comes down to enjoyability. I replayed RE1 a handful of times, whereas I only played through RE2 several times.
- ban1d0, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3And it's still improving.
- MentalBeaver, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3I'll add Devil May Cry 2 to that list ^
- mywhitenoise, on 10/28/2009, -1/+4Actually, yes. 2 can play at that game.
Super Mario Bros. 3, followed by World, followed by 64
Donkey Kong 2
A Link to The Past
Sonic The Hedgehog 2
Mortal Kombat 2
Crash Bandicoot 2
Tekken 2
Twisted Metal 2
Resident Evil 4
Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Warhawk
Metal Gear Solid 4
Rock Band 2
Killzone 2
Uncharted 2 - kingmanic, on 10/28/2009, -2/+5VII wasn't as focused as some of the others. It was sort of rambling and mostly due to bad localization. The mix of cutscene styles and some oddities with unfinished quests made it feel unpolished but it had the wow factor which broke jrpg's into the mainstream American audience. It's notable for that but quality wise it feels unpolished compared to the 2 American predecessors and subsequent games in the series. It resembles 5 in the meandering way the game proceeds. VIII / IX / X / XII all had their own flaws but each were stylistically more cohesive and felt more polished.
- planktonattack, on 10/29/2009, -0/+3"spawned a marketing empire the size of a small empire" is possibly the worst piece of journalism I have ever read.
- fanfablebig, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3OMG you're right. That wasn't on the list. How could the author talk about PC gaming and sequels and not mention Diablo 2.
- MentalBeaver, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3Speedball 2.
- samsmartjr, on 10/29/2009, -0/+3Does that mean that FFX is better than FF7 since it was the first FF on a PS2?
- kingmanic, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3'Or how about the Gambit system of FFXII? Let's have the game play itself! Boy we're having fun now!!!'
thats just personal taste; I thought it was brilliant because it automated the 'hit a 10 times to finish trivial battle'. Boss fights required just as much menu interaction as they did before (little if over levelled; a lot if under levelled). The game itself brought a vastness that some of the games in the series lacked (V, VIII). The world seemed alive and interesting. I only wish the plot was more epic and less "foot note in history".
I agree with the junction system but XII's gambits were interesting and took just as much thought (or FAQS) to use wisely as the materia system. As well The design philosophy of XII mirrored that of FF tactics and Vagrant story. It let you get as powerful as had time to become to at any point and I like games like that which is why I have 99h+ saves in each of those 3 games. -
