- Renton, on 03/28/2009, -1/+74I predict half these digg comments will be:
"I agree with what they said about the other two consoles, but the ones they said about my console of choice are completely wrong."
Followed by some fanboy rant. - tas08, on 03/28/2009, -8/+65I like the part where they criticized consoles.
- supermanly, on 03/28/2009, -5/+44I find some of the arguments against PC rather frustrating:
No Quality Control on Games - PC is a ***** open platform. What were you expecting? And it's not like you can't hear by word of mouth, on forums, or via reviews whether a game is good or not.
Vista being an abomination - I disagree; I use Vista perfectly fine with my games. My computer's not exactly top-of-the-line and my games aren't graphically intense (I mainly play TF2/CS/WC3). I can't vouch for anything upper end/GFW-exclusives etc.
***** screaming into headsets - 9/10 I see people legitimately using the mic for team-oriented objectives. Granted, there are mic-spammers but that's what mutes for:)
Patches - Would you prefer ***** games being released with no remedy to their *****-ness? Updates are linked directly to patches so I'm including them here (Flawed update requires a patch). Especially with online multiplayer games, patches/updates are absolutely necessary to keep the game balanced. Investors generally like games being released on time, and they'd generally push the dev/publisher to get the game on the market asap to get more money (in the short term). Not to mention if devs "do it right the first time," it's gonna take a hell of a lot longer to get to that state. I'll take shorter development times and updates/patches over longer development times and no patches or equal development times resulting in ***** games.
CASE IN POINT: TF2 gets updates/patches a lot, whereas the 360 version needs to go through MSFT, resulting in the gamer paying for XBL, their internet, and the download itself. I've been playing TF2 since December '06. Talk about good multiplayer. It was released 7-8 years after TFC, whereas with a "polished game" where they'd have all the updates/patches worked in, it'd probably not be released until 2010. - ganymede2010, on 03/28/2009, -3/+32N64=perfect!
- inactive, on 03/28/2009, -7/+33The article did a good job of getting to the arguments against each platform. The list in the article is pretty complete but I'll just focus on the consoles.
Wii- underpowered, poor/cartoony visuals, no HD, poor use of waggle, shovelware.
360- all games are FPS, RROD, Xbox Live fees, pricey accessories.
PS3- expensive, lack of exclusive games, Bluray not a big improvement, multiplatform games usually worse on PS3. - burden555, on 03/28/2009, -1/+23The PC reasons were kinda true but Valve seems to be making those downsides look like nothing.
- inactive, on 03/28/2009, -7/+29it is a myth that it takes a fortune to maintain a high end PC. periodic upgrades don't cost an arm and a leg. now buying a new one can be an entirely different story. buy you can buy a 1680x1050 res laptop that can play crysis on high for $1200 - $1500 so you can't really make the argument that cost is prohibitive anymore. re vista I love it and no one forces you to switch from XP if you want to game.
- TruEKuma, on 03/28/2009, -0/+19I enjoy my 360, PS3, and my Wii to be completely honest. The 360 has some of the best community interactions via xbox live along with some great games (both exclusive and multi-platform). The PS3 has some exclusives that I love playing (Killzone 2, MLB The Show, MGS4, etc...). And my Wii is always fun to screw around with when I have people over. They are all great consoles, though I do find the Wii's lack of graphic capability, the PS3's firmware updates, and the 360's red ring of death to be very annoying, good article.
Also, In before fan boy war. - macfan93, on 03/28/2009, -1/+20I really can't believe that they did not mention the xbox live fee. You can not really make the argument that they are giving you something special when windows and ps3 already offer it for free.
- tyrulz, on 03/28/2009, -2/+20blu ray on a hi def tv IS a big improvement
- NeoTechni, on 03/28/2009, -6/+23"Bluray not a big improvement,"
Maybe if you're ***** blind! - inactive, on 03/28/2009, -0/+17$1200-$1500 is a lot of money and it's pretty strange you assume everybody can afford that,
- inactive, on 03/28/2009, -3/+18I like the part where you STFU.
- Jiggernaut82, on 03/28/2009, -1/+16When I searched "snob" that wasn't the first image I found....
- deuceswilde, on 03/28/2009, -0/+14It was saying PC's are expensive compared to consoles, which they are. When your example of "cheap" is a non-upgradeable laptop for roughly four times as much as the current consoles you pretty much prove them right. PC's have more capabilities and evolve faster but there's no way to say that doesn't come at a premium.
- Zap2, on 03/28/2009, -3/+17Well to be fair, seem like the complain about every side of everything
MS buys games
Sony doesn't buy games
Seriously? You can really only blame one or the other - JayD16, on 03/28/2009, -7/+20The "PS3 has no games" and the "multiplat sucks on PS3" arguments are so out of date these days.
It's expensive alright but not so much so to triple blame the PS3 for it.
-It’s still too expensive
-There’s very little difference between 360 and PS3 games
-Bluray not a big improvement
That is basically the same complaint. - chaos7, on 03/28/2009, -3/+15i'll digg it, but the bandwagon vista hate is lame.
- styx31989, on 03/28/2009, -4/+16Why do they hate PC patches?
Sure they could have caught the things before release, but not every company has that time.
Should they just leave it a broken game?
For the PC one, it seamed like he was grasping at straws a little... - ps3beast, on 03/28/2009, -1/+13"Christ, playing Doom on a dialup PC modem was easier than this."
- ZeroVector, on 03/28/2009, -1/+13"Congratulations, you won!"
- Borgcube, on 03/28/2009, -0/+10Except you don't need any of that stuff, except the nunchucks, but extra controllers are nice to have on any console.
It's just the fact that stupid people buy these accessories so, if you're smart enough not to buy them, don't. - cthellis, on 03/28/2009, -0/+10I don't hate patches on either the PC or PS3, so long as it brings improvement. The problem comes when developers RELY on patches, using it as an excuse to "soft launch" a game that's not ready yet, snag the bulk of the money they're going to make on the game, and release fixes somewhere down the line.
The OTHER big ***** annoyance is them doing it retardedly. If a game can quickly and easily self-patch, then it's no sweat. (A resident app like Steam taking care of it in the background is great.) But all too many developers and publishers still prompt people to go to their websites... go to website AFFILIATES... browse through pages to try to figure out which version you need... download a P2P mini-client... STOP IT YOU *****!!!
The PS3 is a large offender with that not because it's hard to find the patches (it's not), but that they're time consuming and annoying when they IN NO WAY HAVE TO BE. The PS3 is automatically a central gateway, so it should be able to manage all of this ***** in the background. When idle, it can auto-download firmware updates, it can auto-download game updates that would auto-apply the next time you ran the game... it can even auto-restart itself, and auto-relaunch whatever you were idling in. All there needs to be is a checkbox for "yes, keep all this ***** up to date and stop bugging me about it all the goddam time, you nards." You'd think this would be a forehead-smacking kind of realization, but Sony seems bound and determined to force you to go through 15 screens when purchasing any content, so... -_- - Evilblobs, on 03/28/2009, -1/+11The only thing bad about PCs is consoles.
every other game is now a console port. A console port full of consolitis, lousy graphics, poorly done controls, mind numbing gameplay, never ending cycle of cliffhanger->sequel...
To build a Pc that will play a console port, as well as the console itself will (720p, medium-high graphics) costs about as much as a console. - Chrysalii, on 03/28/2009, -0/+9good call.
But I find some of the circles in this article funny
bashing MS for buying exclusives then bashing sony for not
Bashing Nintendo for being the developing lifeblood of their consoles then begging for it on the DS
funny stuff. - ElectricNZ, on 03/28/2009, -2/+11You can tell gamesradar was struggling to construct some solid arguments to hate the PC. They were either complete and utter lies or something that nobody actually cares about.
- JakeW, on 03/28/2009, -1/+10Dugg for "...iTouch myself. "
- replaysMike, on 03/28/2009, -3/+12The PS3 expense argument just doesn't make sense to me. Of course it's more expensive - if you were to add in an HD dvd player and built-in wifi to the Xbox 360, it's far more expensive than the PS3!! I mean add it up - $129 for xbox wifi adapter, $199 for HD-DVD, and want a hard drive? Add on another $129! The PS3 has all these things in the base system price! (I have both consoles, Im not a fanboy, dont bury me as such)
- BedPost, on 03/28/2009, -1/+9Wow, way to pick the most expensive way to game *****. Building your own PC is infinitely cheaper and more powerful than buying a laptop. Even still, PC gaming IS more expensive than console gaming - that's the price you pay for better graphics.
- inactive, on 03/28/2009, -2/+10Heh, best argument against the Wii - when someone makes a good game for it, no one buys it. I still don't understand why so many people bitch that there are no good games but then refuse to purchase the good games that do get released, which of course decreases companies' incentives to actually put any effort into their games.
- Junkyardjim, on 03/28/2009, -4/+12dude i think you forgot "pricey accessories" in the wii department... you get a wii, your not only gonna get one controller, your going to more than likely own 4 within a month of buying a wii, and then 4 nunchucks, and 4 racing wheels, and 2 guns, and 4 tennis rackets, and golf clubs, and etc etc etc... holy mackinaw!
- inactive, on 03/28/2009, -7/+15Compared to a couple hundred dollars for a console, you don't think $1200-$1500 is prohibitively expensive? WTF? Until there is a PC with 360-like performance selling for $200-$300, the argument still stands.
- GiantDunk, on 03/28/2009, -0/+7You mean you were the 10,000th visitor to!?
- khaos4k, on 03/28/2009, -3/+10You sound young. Before the internet was huge, games had to be right the first time. It's not that the patch fixes the problem that they are complaining about. It's that developers are putting in less quality control and knowingly releasing broken games and just fixing them later.
- ZeroFive1, on 03/28/2009, -0/+7Is it somehow wrong for a producer to fix a game, make it better, or god forbid, add content?
- inactive, on 03/28/2009, -2/+9Another reminder that the golden years of gaming were the SNES vs. Genesis days and we'll never have it that good again.
- c010rb1indusa, on 03/28/2009, -0/+7As much as I love the N64 and its controller, the controller itself was not particularly practical. D-Pad and L button located and isolated all the way on the left, and the C buttons were to small ans to close together for quick satisfying button mashing. Other than that, it was gaming bliss.
- anthropodeus, on 03/28/2009, -1/+7all games have expensive accessories. if u want 3 more controllers for your ps3 or 360, it'll cost you an additional 180$. and if u got 3 of the ps3's sixaxis controllers before the dualshock 3 came out, feel free to kick yourself in the ass, like i did.
- mabsark, on 03/29/2009, -0/+6Snobs? No, we're just not retarded.
- inactive, on 03/28/2009, -1/+7No More Heroes, Madworld - both excellent hardcore third-party Wii games, and both complete bloodbaths.
- DarkShroud, on 03/28/2009, -1/+7I'd like to point out that PC games are usually cheaper than the PS3/360 version.
As for systems, a higher end Core2quad system can be built for $600 and will last for more than 5 years. Video cards only need to be changed around 3 years. Just have to wait a little 609 months and you can get a high end card one to two versions behind the latest top level card for around $150.00 if you just have to keep up. - Borgcube, on 03/28/2009, -1/+7Safe search?
- ZeroFive1, on 03/28/2009, -2/+7The 360 uses the ATi Xenos:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R500
It is comparable to the 8600gt or HD2600XT, which both cost around $70 and can cost as low as $40 with rebates.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ...
So, we have:
GPU: 40-70
CPU: 60
Motherboard: 50
HDD: 50-70
RAM: 20
Case + PSU: 50
DVD drive: 20
Total, that costs from 290-330 dollars. The graphics card is equivalent to the Xbox's, but the rest of the components are superior in quality. - IcyStorm, on 03/28/2009, -6/+11Cartoony visuals isn't a bad thing.
- smemily, on 03/28/2009, -0/+5You don't actually need any of that nonsense besides the wiimotes and maybe the nunchucks though. most games don't even use the nunchucks, and the giant plastic accessories are pretty unnecessary.
- DarkShroud, on 03/28/2009, -0/+5I dreaded the days of when the consoles would be able to connect online and update. I didn't want the same thing with PC games to happen to console games.
- inactive, on 03/28/2009, -1/+6Mother Board Monitor?
Meat Beat Manifesto?
Married Black Male?
confused. - GroundIsSound, on 03/29/2009, -0/+5this is why im still playing my atari lynx
- SSUK, on 03/28/2009, -3/+7I think it's more a case of:
"MS are being uncompetitive for buying up games, stop it"
"Sony are being uncompetitive for not buying up games, start it"
So basically, when one stops or the other starts it's all good and dandy. Afterall, the consumer benefits from either scenario... Or something. I don't quite know where the writer was coming from, but that's how I saw it anyway. - FrayWing, on 03/28/2009, -1/+5Completely agreed. I spent years playing Counterstrike and RARELY saw someone who didn't use the mic for game-play oriented comments.
The only people who are hating on PC's either don't have a good PC, can't afford one, or just don't know how to use one properly. -
