- andrethegiant, on 10/12/2007, -4/+63Marked as innacurate. The next-gen battle doesn't start until Sony says it does.
/sarcasm - RazorElite, on 10/12/2007, -6/+53At least this article seems educated and not just some dumb fanboy's comments. I actually do quite agree as well, MS probably will come out on top in NA, while Europe COULD be Sony and Japan may be Nintendo. You know how those Japanese like things 'unique' and the Americans like their shooters.
- rastex, on 10/12/2007, -5/+39That's my thinking as well (I'm the writer of the article). It might be close between Sony and MS in Europe, but most likely Sony will have a substantial lead there. If things start going against Sony in Europe then they could be in big trouble. As for Japan, it's totally up in the air. I actually think Sony will be number one there, but overall the console market in Japan will shrink even further. The DS' success won't necessarily translate into console success because they are different markets and demographics. But if the Wii matches the DS' success then ya, Nintendo will reign supreme in all regions.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33Though it would be somewhat correct to say that the next-gen battle doesn't start until at least two of the fighters are in the ring.
- Oakes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32RazorElite: "You know how those Japanese like things 'unique' and the Americans like their shooters."
I assume you mean young American males, not the rest of the untapped population that Nintendo hopes to reach. Granted, the author pointed out that Nintendo was not dealt with here due to the greatly different target audience (very smart move).
I'm not even done reading it, yet I already like it and I'm impressed out how well-organized the article is. Great job, rastex. - faulkner, on 10/12/2007, -12/+36am i the only one who doesn't care about the battle and just looks forward to enjoying my wii?
- BrokenImage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Begun the console wars have.
- Vironex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25Give me one single "fanboyish" quote from that article. It was well written and fair.
I think it's you that is the Sony fanboy, sir. - SqueakyWheel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23The next gen doesn't start until you can walk in the store and buy a ps3. I believe we all underestimate the brand loyalty the playstation has. kinda like intel compared to amd.
- Inverno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18The orignial Xbox was all about the college kids. The 360---not so much. Oblivion, for example, is not a very friendly game for the person who has 1~5 hours a week for gaming. FFXI is an outdated, junky MMO (I retired my character a few months ago, I miss him.) but it's present on the 360 and it 'requires' 25+ hours/week to see any measurable progress.
However, that's not to say there isn't room for the casual gamer on the 360. My wife has been playing the hell out of Bejewled, Hexic, and she takes turns with me on Geomatry Wars. Everyone loves King Kong..ect.
I don't think the Frat Boys will jump on board until Halo 3 hits. - h00ligan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21no way the ps3 cmes out on top in europe. They are having a hard time swallowing the price of the 360, very few are in the position to pay what amounts to $1000 USD for a game system.
- Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21> You know how those Japanese like things 'unique'
It's good that you put "unique" in quotes. The Japanese market isn't any more open-minded than any other market. Actually, probably less.
In North America, pretty much all genres do well to some extent. And they come from all over -- Europe, Japan, North America, and other places. But it's very rare for a non-Japanese game to sell well inside Japan. Furthermore, they seem to have an irrational fear of all first-person games. (Metroid Prime bombed there, for example.) - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17"Aren't the 360s that are out now semi-crippled? Essentially the original Xbox with more horsepower?"
What the hell are you talking about ? You're an idiot . .
"Halo 3 won't make nearly as big a splash as you'd think."
It will be MASSIVE, and no one can deny that, I think you simply don't grasp how popular Halo is.
The rest of your comment was as clueless as the above 2 remarks, so I won't waste my time and precious bandwidth in replying. - ekkalvia, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Good point, Oakes. I think the Wii could turn quite a few heads in the non-gaming NA demographic.
- Alegis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14@hackwrench: next-gen battle started before xbox 360 was released. Production is battle, too. Most significant part IMO.
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Dude. All we've seen of it is a pre-rendered trailer. I like the series, but I wouldn't be *that* enthusiastic if I were you.
- neonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I liked the article, but I do not think you nailed point number 3. Everyone has done everything to bash PS3 and the cell processor complexity is one of the ones they always hammer on. It is not going to take some master programmer to figure out how to write efficient multithreaded applications. While I do agree that the effectiveness of multithreading in gaming can only go so far currently, it can improve the game play a lot. Now I also want to say that USA (Unified Shader Architecture) does not need additional code, but rather just different code. USA is a huge step forward in photo realistic gaming. I do give that to the X360. But I do hope that Sony takes the time to write efficient libraries to manage some of the timing to leash the huge beast that is the Cell Processor. I do also agree that everyone should just stop hyping and trash talking until all consoles are out and the numbers are in.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12It's going to cost $200, max and like the person above me pointed out, it's not being shoved down my throat and is not bloating the price.
Oh, and that's a real convincing argument as to why the 360 sucks, go cry yourself to sleep holding your precious PS2. - iamtheinternet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Interesting article, but dugg mainly because i witnessed this:
http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/1811/360qh6.gif - graizur, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16We are not all rich you pompous ignoramus. You are not elitist but you are "Bourgeois" because you assume every one is as rich as you or something. How lame is that?
Digg me down if you want, I would understand if no one here could relate to me. - PunkRampant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I'm surprised Halo 3 isn't its own number on the list. Maybe because it's "Why the 360 has already won NA" and not "Why the 360 will strangle the ***** out of PS3 in 2007"
- prosthetichead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Yes but i don't have to buy the HD-DVD drive though. wheres on the PS3 i have to have a BluRay drive i have no choice but to pay AU$999
AU$999 is a huge amount of cash to drop on just the console (and I'm in no way a poor person i get payed very well) i would never drop that kind of cash on just the console it self.
Also Xbox360 will have a price drop at Christmas be it from a bundle (mums and dads LOVE the bundles for their kids) or just a price drop. - Inverno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I wonder, what would the 360 need to do to win over the British?
Not trying to flame, honest question. - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Paragraphs - please use them, please..
- miketuck3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It would acually be pretty good for gaming industry if MS won america, Sony Europe and Nintendo Japan
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The article had fair view throughout it, and I didn't see any fanboyish comments.
- graizur, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Seriously, I am interested to see if any one can come out with a logical argument against this predictions validity past just saying "No Prediction Is A Guaranty".
I know that what this guy says doesn't guaranty that the 360 will win the console war in North America. However he doesn't base his predictions on anything untrue. IT makes logical sense and if it turns out to be correct it wont be a surprise.
For Real, SOME ONE please argue against this guy, I just want to see if it is even possible. - neykho, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I'm asking myself the same question. I guess the only way to convince them would be for the 360 to release better, more innovative games. In other words, become the next ps2.
Cause as that guy said, 'Everyone assumes the best titles will be on ps3'.
Better games = more consoles sold. Period. - PunkRampant, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13No, you had it right the first time. I think you meant to say "End of store - that's where the PS3 will be, in the bargain bin."
- Tsujigiri, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9You misinterpreted me. I myself only ever buy one system at a time. I'm a part time grant worker in rl, so I doubt that I fit into the "Bourgeois...pompous ignoramus" category when it comes to spending, although I wouldn't mind if I did, it looks pretty fun. But sadly the truth is that I make barely more money than the people in my social aid programs.
What I said was this - most fan boys and real gaming geeks that I know who are into consoles will buy multiple systems. I thought that I had made my one and only point clear when I said "Won't everyone you know just buy one of each platform anyways? Most gaming geeks I know will buy a platform just so they can formally bitch about it." Once you took the initiative to assume that I was included in that group was where you went off base. I'm just a casual gamer with a PS2 and a 5 year old PC. But thanks for your kind commentary of me, a stranger whom you know nothing about, and for not overreacting and calling me names or anything for sharing my opinion. I knew someone with your grounded outlook would be a more upstanding guy than that. - MonkeyLives, on 10/12/2007, -17/+24The Xbox 360 is:
1) Completely dead in Japan - doing massively worse than the first Xbox there
2) Dying in Europe - Microsoft only shipped 200k new 360s to all of Europe last quarter - that number comes directly from Microsoft's latest quarterly report
3) Doing worse than the first Xbox in North America - the 360 is some 200-300k units behind the first Xbox at the same point in its life.
The 360 has sold just over 2 million units in its first eight months in NA - confirmed NPD sell through data.
Dead in one market, dying in a second, and doing worse than the previous Xbox in the last. And this is before the 360 is facing competition from the Wii and PS3 come November.
The 360 will be luck to make it to 15 million worldwide over its lifetime.
Sony and the PS3 will easily take NA and Europe. Nintendo will most likely go neck and neck with the PS3 in Japan. The 360 will be irrelevant come November. - Oakes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8afrazkhan, nobody is "writing off the Wii." We're simply recognizing what Nintendo itself has said: they are not competing directly with Microsoft and Sony. I personally think the Wii will sell more units, and be more profitable, than the other consoles, but it isn't very useful to say it will "beat" them. That's like saying Microsoft "beat" Apple in the corporate market, even though Apple's not competing in it.
- Spaz007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6[Reported by Diggers as Possibly Inaccurate]
WTF... Its not fact yet and might never be. Stop marking things as inaccurate when its a opinion. - cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Advantage 360 - Because as a company you always want show consumers what your product can do vs. telling consumers what your product will do when it comes out. Not to beat a dead horse but ps2 to ps3 gestation has been to long.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You've played it NerveBand?
- cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That is a valid point. It's very possible it could break out exactly as you said.
- cryonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6most of the people i talk to (who havent heard much abou the ps3) are going to buy one. and those who have heard about it, are pissed but still going to buy one... possible hit i say. im not going to buy one till much later in the game, because im glad i didnt get a 360 yet, because ive been disapointed with its games (yes i have played them) once i see sweet games come out for either, thats when im going to buy them. Wii is already on reserve :)
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"Sony and the PS3 will easily take NA and Europe."
Considering rising gas and real estate prices and low employment, I doubt that many will be willing to drop $500-$600 on a console and $60-$70 per game in NA. The price point between Wii and PS3 is going to be a BIIIIG factor this time around. - stappawho, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@Lynn
Produced != Sold - darkzealot89, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14"In terms of absolute numbers maybe the Wii will come out on top, which I plan to write about, but dealing with the Wii lays outside the scope of this article."
Just a fancy way of saying "Wii will dominate the console market completely, however I can deny that fact by stating that it is 'outside the scope of this article' and not have to worry about it!"
Wii is a next gen system, it is still in the "scope of this article" and has generated far more hype than the Xbox. If you are going to write about next gen systems, you better include them all if you plan on having a real article. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Xbox killed my father and raped my mother!
Save me, Sony! Save me! - dyl0n, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14Speaking as a Brit, Xbox is just not considered cool enough. All my friends have PS2s and are waiting patiently for PS3. Everyone just assumes the best titles will be on PS3. I won't be waiting at the store at midnight - but I'll probably get one. I wouldn't however, even contemplate a 360.
- andybuck, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12im waiting for "10 reasons im fed up of hearing about why sony has lost."
- afrazkhan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10
N.B. I'm a Nintendo fanboy.
Microsoft (as much as I've always hated them) are doing a lot of things right this time round. Their Arcade thingy and Live system look pretty neat. I would even consider buying a 360 if the price was reasonable, for some of the games that I won't see on the Wii.
I have one question though, why are people here writing off the Wii? It's not even mentioned when you guys are considering which console will be dominant. Is it so inconceivable that Wii could contend again 360 and PS3?
You all know about Nintendo's strategy of getting non-gamers on board, but did you know that it's working? The other day my aunt, whome I can say without fear of exaggeration of hyperbole is _the_ most technophobic person I know of, asked me if I have "that brain training thing". My ma' immediately jumped in and excitedly told her that I did. She then wouldn't let off until I let her play it (it took about half an hour to explain how it worked, since she's so unused to technology, but that's another story).
I'm guessing that if my _aunt_ asked me for a video game because of what Nintendo's done to pave the way for the Wii, then Wii will have more users than any other system. Remember that "traditional" gamers are a small proportion of society in the UK (and maybe US too?). - philipz78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was going to say the same thing! The stats seem to be from trustworthy sources, and it IS an OPINION piece. How can an opinion be inaccurate? Only if it's based on lies, but in this case the stats are researched - with sources!
- rastex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well that's kind of the point. MS has done all of these things right which causes certain effects to happen, that plus their first-mover advantage is what has secured their top position in NA.
- nattybohman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I completely agree. It seems you can't have an editorial style article on digg anymore. Some fanboy will always disagree and mark it as inaccurate.
There's got to be a better system for this. - spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I want to buy the console for Dead Rising, but you're spot on, 400 dollars for a poor college student, it's just too unreasonable. While the wii: Around 200 dollars, it'll be an easy decision.
- fozzie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4When Microsoft said that they were going to make Live a part of Vista the fight was won. I personally cannot wait until I can play XBOX players on my PC. There will be a lot more competition in games because there are a lot of people that cannot afford $500 graphics cards every 6 months to play current titles.
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6And Nintendo has more recently called Microsoft it's competitor. It's competing with the PS3 and Xbox360. I'm going to buy a Wii before I buy an Xbox360 or PS3, thus they are competing. To say otherwise is silly.
Your analogy doesn't work, as Xbox 360, Wii and PS3 are all trying to get the most users. None of them are going for a small niche product. -
