Squarely in the 5-6/10 category. I mean it was OK not aweful, but a sequel would look something like the Wild Arms sequels. They're alright, but people aren't lining up to play them.

That footage of Duke lifting weights is part of the in-game engine; the same one Prey uses. Someone could correct me cause I have no clue of what engine it is...there's sooo many to remember that it's hard to pick.

    • coopa, on 04/21/2008, -1/+1I have HG:L and play with a few friends - it's kinda fun but i'm still not seeing much of the substance to it. It's nowhere near 'Blizzard' quality in either gameplay or storyline (ok, it does play similar to the Diablo series). Most of what i know of the game's story and mechanics i've learnt from my friends who play, the game doesn't explain itself very well.

      Still, i live in London and it's awesome running around places i know.
    • grimward, on 04/21/2008, -1/+1Actually, one thing that put me off immensly was the whole thing about the quests being of the MMORPG variant. Yes, you can play it in that setting I know, but still SP quests were bland, until I realized that "uh, IDIOT, there are MORE quests here and than in D2 *slaps self*" So, in the end, Hellgate london is very nice to play and it took the diablo system to exactly the kind of level I wanted it to be :D About the only critique I have with it is that with the patch they pretty much made most of the interesting NPC's in the game into boring "uh" types. (I mean, who in their right mind could NOT want the Covent Station broad's original samples?)

      Edit: clarification about quests: Diablo 2 has quests that are "major" , Hellgate has both "major" quests and these minor MMORPG quests, that's what I failed to realize.

It felt liked they released the alpha test (which i was in). When you release a game, it should be *done*.... or at least PLAYABLE. On the first day my main questline got stuck and I couldn't continue. Since I was only level 6 I decided to remake... i got to level 10 and boom... same thing. I uninstalled it, then cried in the corner.

      All they wanted to do was release it on halloween. They didn't care about the quality of the game when it was released. It absolutely killed the experience for me and I'm not gonna waste my time with it. It shouldn't take 4 months to fix a released game. They bombed Hellgate big time.

I can only hope the sole reason this game is still in development is because 3D Realms decided it needed to let technology progress for a decade before it could begin designing with the latest and greatest in computational advancements in order to afford the awesomeness this game entails. And seriously, the donkey is sick.

The level design really wasn't up to snuff (you always jumped into some random box that stopped you mid-flight and got you pummeled by bullets) and adding that yellow "kill more and have better slomo" was an un-needed change that overcomplicated the (should have been) simple mechanic.

    However I was sad to hear about Startrek Online, I was quite looking forward to that one :(

Choppy gameplay with bad framerate issues, small levels (VERY SMALL), the combat system sucked and really the ONLY reason why we played it (friends and I) is because it was banned and we could :)
        BTW the finishers got VERY boring after the 3rd fight.

(I was in beta, and paid to play it for a few months after) Yes -- Open PVP was sweet, yes player cities are awsume! But come on, shadowbane fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down, then it climbed back up and fell again just for good measure.

    • NWVG, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1I saw and played the demo at E3 2005 when it was running on the beta Xbox 360 units (Basically Mac G5s), and the graphics engine seemed all but done. The weather elements, basic character models, and much of the terrain had been completed too. I really wonder if there have been some delays for money reasons, etc. because when I talked to them in 05 they were aiming for a Holiday 2007 release.
