the author sat on this info for over a year? due to the handheld rumors a week and a half ago [the origami pc], he decided to write up this column and piggyback on the buzz from last week, to promote his book [read the ad in the first paragraph] this is a RUMOR! not confirmed to be true yet... in fact, the only direct quote from a microsoft official is when peter moore went on the record in businessweek to deny rumors of a MS handheld. he speculated on how it would have to be done, but said that they were working on something else; that something else turned out to be origami.

That being said, I really hope they learn from the PSP (and the 360) and hold off on releasing it until they have a solid launch lineup. It doesn't mater if its portable, has the awesomest graphics, and can do 1000 other things. A system plays games. If the games suck, then no one wants the system. Simple logic. Even before you develop a system you should be rounding up developers to make GAMES. In fact you shouldn't even release a new platform unless you have at least 20-30 good games to go with it. Ugh!

- Good games
- MP3/AAC support and something close to iTunes
- Podcasts
- Play games off a memory stick
Now, THAT would be a cool little gadget. Doubtful all the above will be done, but think about the possibilities if anyone out there ever would offer all that.

If M$ comes out with a handheld device that allows me to download Xvid/DivX movies and play it in full res, play my MP3s, listen to podcasts, play games off a memory stick or harddrive, then I'll buy one - simple. - commyostrich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1actually there is a homebrew that allows you to play avi's at full res so quit updating your psp and quit complaining. people always complain that things don't work then a few months later someone made it.
Just like the 2.00 games working on a 1.5 psp. many people gave up and updated to 2.01+ then the MPH Gameloader came out. As for movies there is the PMP mod or the PSPLayerMT that also allows full res video. scummvm loader for some classic pc games too.
And as for the anti-psp crap. The psp now has some really great games out. GTA, Daxter, Syphon Filter, WRC, Exit and a ton more. so quit your dang DS boasting. they are different systems and have different pros and cons. sheesh. soon enough I'll get a DS but I'm poor and can't afford both. I got the PSP and have been happy ever since. o well. let's continue bickering like mad men!!!!

I really bought it just for gaming but found out it could do much more - it plays music, videos, movies, photos and best of all - I can do web-browsing on my psp plopped on my bed at night. Simply awesome. Its got awesome graphics and sound and good games.
Its really a mature gaming device truly reflecting the current tech era. It has its negative points too - long load times, fragile and not easy to put videos on it till you start getting the hang of it, crappy umd format, expensive memory sticks. Sony still has a lot to learn but hey at least I can play GTA on the go.
MS wants to have a go - well then go ahead I say. Lets see what they do ( I don't expect much anyways. However, their policy is embrace, extend and destroy and their exceedingly good at it )
Nintendo DS is an archaic gaming handheld belonging in 1995. Nintendo DS is meant for 8 year girls and you'll see the nintendo fangirls going ga-ga over it. With its crappy blocky look.

It is a very nice system and It does deserve its fair share of credit. It has some great graphics and can play some very great games. I just want to know if you have ever played the DS? Have carried one around and played with it through out the day? It has some really great games that you can just pick up and play plus the Wi-Fi gaming means you can find people online when your in a hotspot or at home with your wireless router. And it is very inovattive and does not belong in 1995.
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Considering that they've not made a Zelda game yet, and the first true Mario game (Mario and Luigi, albeit fun, isn't what you're thinking of) has yet to be released, your statement doesn't hold much weight. Have you looked at the game catalogue for the DS? Compare for me the original titles on the DS to the non-ported games (including GTA and Need for Speed) of the PSP. You'll see that the DS has the better catalogue. When movies made for your handheld out sell the games, you know you've got a problem.

And the stuff about them ripping off the DS touch sreen relates to the fact that it is done before and they are not doing anything new and creative for a game system, not that it was not around before the DS, just it was not widly used until the DS brought it to games.

- ozid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lets saturate the market a little more. Unless it plays DVD's or HDDVDS or Blu Ray (but I doubt being thats a sony product ATM), it will get chumped by the PSP. It already has its feet in the ground, and the UMD format is at least selling decently. Nobody is going to want to buy another format of disc for this. Sony almost made a huge mistake with the UMD as it is.
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i hope that photo is just a photoshopped image. seeing as how this was just confirmed today, i'm sure it is; but, if it's not, then that is going to be the worst portable gaming device EVER. i mean, the layout of the xbox controller is bad enough. now, it looks like we're gonna have a portable gaming device TWICE the length of your hand that also comes with a bad button layout.
