And btw... yes I am ashamed of spending the $$$ on a PSP, but it was before the DRM crap hit.... then Sony pissed me off further by constantly forcing updates that blocked homebrew.

Everyone knows that some of the best comments get buried. I don't know about you but I can't resist the little "expand" button. It's an amusing system on a tech site. It'd be downright creepy on a politics board, though...

Of course it is a shop image... we don't have any visual details yet. That image is the 360 controller, elongated, with a screen in the middle. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"Dean Takahashi of The Mercury News breaks news this morning that Microsoft is working on a portable gaming device that--like the PSP--does video, music, and games too. This news CONFIRMS numerous rumors that such a device was in the works."
How is this misleading? You're a ***** idiot. - timmyboywonder, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3And if you decided to RTFA http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/26/microsoft-working-on-plans-for-portable-gaming-device/
you would see that this is just a rumor. And you will find such quotes as "If Microsoft goes ahead with such a device, it'll have to ask itself whether or not it wants to include it as part of the Xbox family" and "If Microsoft decides to go ahead with a portable games machine (we mused about this possibility a couple of months ago) the next few years will be very interesting indeed for portable gaming" Everything is a Rumor until microsoft confirms it. - jedi55555, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2timmyboywonder thanks to saying that it was a rumor 2 months ago. This is a new article not one that is 2 months old.
- apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this IS a rumor. if you read the article, you can see that he did the research that "uncovered" this over a year ago. his only proof is the xbox reshuffling back in fall right before xbox360 launch [that has nothing more to do with a portable console than it does for the xbox360.] and that microsoft hired 20 transmeta engineers. one of transmeta's specialities involves optimizing chips for low power consumption.
the author sat on this info for over a year? due to the handheld rumors a week and a half ago [the origami pc], he decided to write up this column and piggyback on the buzz from last week, to promote his book [read the ad in the first paragraph] this is a RUMOR! not confirmed to be true yet... in fact, the only direct quote from a microsoft official is when peter moore went on the record in businessweek to deny rumors of a MS handheld. he speculated on how it would have to be done, but said that they were working on something else; that something else turned out to be origami.

anyone have any other obscure hand helds to add to the list?- rockintom99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hah, i remember the game.com. best thing about it was the built in touchscreen solitaire... and batman.
- dustinhoffman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Umm... portable gaming device? Wasn't that a supposed "feature" of Origami? Wait.. Let me guess... It's codenamed Origami 2 "this time we think we got it right".
- koshak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually...no. Something to keep in mind...People THINKING that a device will be used for something does not mean that is the intended use.
The Origiami was never meant to be a TOY. It is for professionals to use, mainly for work. Just becuase some people on digg assumed it was going to be a gaming device does not make it so. - jedi55555, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dustinhoffman, gaming is a feature in my mobile phone but it is not a dedicated gaming machine. There is alot of difference. Gaming was never a huge deal in the Origami project except for the people that hyped it up to be.
- koshak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually...no. Something to keep in mind...People THINKING that a device will be used for something does not mean that is the intended use.
- tempest89, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3What about the UMPC?
Won't it play games?- diskopo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I think that's targeted more towards Business and Productivity apps than gaming.
- EricB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2They might as well jump on the bandwagon, though most Xbox games are shooters, which I would not think will be as interesting on a portable.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yes, but ironically, the best FPS on a handheld by far is Metroid Prime: Hunters, which is for a Nintendo console of all things.
- Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Yes, but ironically, the best FPS on a handheld by far is Metroid Prime: Hunters, which is for a Nintendo console of all things."
Some people may laugh at that but the touch screen has some of the most precice control EVER... better than a joystick and a little step down from a mouse!! yeah its that good!
- L2006, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3One thing I guarantee Microsoft will get right is, they will put a hard drive in it for movies and games.
- afractus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2more competitors the better. i dunno about microsoft making something small but whatever. its worth a try and if its good i'd consider buying it. hard drive is a must!
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1And yet the only way you'll be able to (legally) use a hard drive for movies is if you pay extra. DMCA makes it illegal to rip your DVDs to it. Thanks a bunch, MPAA!
- allarise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1probably right - however i doubt they'll stick a spinning hdd, most likely one of them 4-8gb flash deals.
- Cyhwuhx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4.::: So will they simply copy the PSP and add WMC/Vista features or will they actually make an effort? Then again if they simply come up with a HALO for it, I don't think anyone will actually care.
- DaveyDeadite, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1oh great! another slew of under-whelming, unknown titles that will cost too damn much. I'll stick with my psp and hopefully pick up the ds lite if it comes stateside anytime soon.
- DCstewieG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You'll stick with your PSP for "under-whelming, unknown titles that cost too damn much?" Sounds about right.
- pr0vidence, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6I'll stick with my DS, thanks. The PSP didn't interest me, this does even less.
Keep trying Microsoft, maybe someday if you manage to innovate something, ANYTHING, I'll pay some attention to you.- koshak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I'm sure they are worried about what YOU think about them.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Somewhere, a bunch of otaku deep within Nintendo's headquarters issued a deep, soul-rattling collective bellow at the though of MS attempting to challenge their undisputed handheld supremacy.
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Because losing $4 billion on gaming isn't enough for Microsoft...
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Not to make fun of Microsoft. But this will:
1) Run on an Intel processor
2) Be huge (like a game gear)
3) Run on windows
4) Use play for sure
Let's see how many will come true.- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4You just described the UMPC. Why would they make another one of thoses?
- zeebo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It will actually feature
1) both a custom PPC processor, and an intel processor.
2) will use full-size DVD-Rom disks.
3) have more than 2hours of run time, although likely less in xbox-compatability mode, movie mode, or game mode.
- scuba7183, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1so old it's not even funny. no laughing. none. not one giggle.
- TheBeaver, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Microsoft: jack of all trades, master of none.
- koshak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Their market share would seriously disagree with you.
- n3rrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I would say that "jack of all..." would be better applied towards Sony. The only thing they have going for them now-a-days is their Playstation brand, and even that is at risk.
- compilererror, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1I like the idea of a second analog stick (something I wish my psp had). I also really like how it's an analog STICK, instead of a nub. The screen looks a bit small, but other than that, it shows promise.
That being said, I really hope they learn from the PSP (and the 360) and hold off on releasing it until they have a solid launch lineup. Otherwise, it'll just seem like wasted potential for the first several months, and it'll be harder to get people interested when it's no longer new.- jedi55555, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You do know that the picture is just a mock up that Joystiq has been using for a while now.
- anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1This would be diggable if it were not speculation. Microsoft has not announced a portable system and if memory serves me right, the same article pops up every 6 months or so.
- Spencerocks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Speculation.
Close but, no digar. - imyke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Is it me or does this keep popping up?
do you think we're really going to see this?- sAnDeTri, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think hoping. I remember this conversation when the first xbox came out.
- spyyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I am not sure why console manufactuers over the last 20 years still don't get it. The downfall of any system has to do with GAMES!! It doesn't mater if its portable, has the awesomest graphics, and can do 1000 other things. A system plays games. If the games suck, then no one wants the system. Simple logic. Even before you develop a system you should be rounding up developers to make GAMES. In fact you shouldn't even release a new platform unless you have at least 20-30 good games to go with it. Ugh!
- Cyhwuhx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3.::: The thing is: Microsoft knows this. They would only release the Xbox when they were sure they would get EA's Madden on it. It would be pointless to even try to release it without having access to that game, they reasoned.
- firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Ok, I think Microsoft is turning into a Pepsi; they're basically copying everything everybody else does as Pepsi does with Coca Cola.
Besides, who'd want to carry that around? THe Joystick will get in the way and it looks like something that'll get dirty quick.
Besides, nice photoshop job (I assume...)- Geterix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"Ok, I think Microsoft is turning into a Pepsi; they're basically copying everything everybody else does as Pepsi does with Coca Cola."
Yeah, how dare MS does anything. No other company ever copies anyone in the industry. It just like when Apple invented the MP3 player....... What? You mean they didnt? - cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Apple didn't invent the MP3 player, they just took the idea and made it simple, elegant and better. Microsoft takes ideas and makes them bloated, buggy, and mediocre.
- koshak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7cambrown...Apple didn't make the MP3 player better. They just spent more to market it. And that obviously worked to brainwash people like you into THINKING it was better despite fewer features and a higher price.
- koshak, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0double post
- chriszma666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Your comment of Pepsi copying Coke is so ignorant its hard to read it. You think Coke is the only company that makes Cola drinks?
- captainjy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I seem to remember Coke doing a "NEW" taste back in the 80's, trying to emulate Pepsi. Let's face it, most companies copy someone. I also seem to remember hearing that Creative owns the patent on IPOD wheel concept. Hmm, how original Apple is, too. People don't naturally hate MS, they hate them because other people do all because we are mindless creatures of habit. Form your OWN opinions and don't blindly support the band-wagoners.. How can you claim judgement on something before it even hits the market?
- Geterix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"Ok, I think Microsoft is turning into a Pepsi; they're basically copying everything everybody else does as Pepsi does with Coca Cola."
- ZargonX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hmm... they want to challenge the PSP, the DS, and the iPod all in one device. Sounds like an excellent recipe for a slick machine that will function half-assedly at everything it tries to do.
- molecool, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Mmmmh, M$ has a history to being 2nd to market and mopping up by learning from its competitors. Don't underestimate them - M$ has a huge amount of resources. There are not too many things they have to get right - just take the current PSP and add more functionality:
- Wireless web surfing in a better browser
- Optical keyboard maybe as an accessory (there are several products hitting the market right now)
- DivX/Xivd/WMF/H264/VC9 support (in full res)
- Good games
- MP3/AAC support and something close to iTunes
- Podcasts
- Play games off a memory stick
Now, THAT would be a cool little gadget. Doubtful all the above will be done, but think about the possibilities if anyone out there ever would offer all that.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Here's how they could mop up the floor with the PSP: support the mod/hack community. If they don't fight all the cool functionality that people come up with for their device (like Sony did) and maybe actually encourage such activities they would really have something I'd be interested in. If it is designed with modding/hacking in mind, say with open source, that would be awesome. Not likely, but awesome.
- molecool, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5eXactly!!! The PSP is more tightly controlled than a virgin's ass and I'm sick of having to go through sacrificing a live chicken just so that it loads a game off the memory stick. Even videos cannot be encoded (and played) in full resolution - and we all know there is no technical reason for this. Actually I feel gipped having bought a device that limits my activities and forces me to buy media on a UMD. I know they have to make their money back by me having to shell out big bucks for junky games and such, fine - but don't limit functionality that everyone would expect to be there - greedy gits!
If M$ comes out with a handheld device that allows me to download Xvid/DivX movies and play it in full res, play my MP3s, listen to podcasts, play games off a memory stick or harddrive, then I'll buy one - simple. - commyostrich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1actually there is a homebrew that allows you to play avi's at full res so quit updating your psp and quit complaining. people always complain that things don't work then a few months later someone made it.
Just like the 2.00 games working on a 1.5 psp. many people gave up and updated to 2.01+ then the MPH Gameloader came out. As for movies there is the PMP mod or the PSPLayerMT that also allows full res video. scummvm loader for some classic pc games too.
And as for the anti-psp crap. The psp now has some really great games out. GTA, Daxter, Syphon Filter, WRC, Exit and a ton more. so quit your dang DS boasting. they are different systems and have different pros and cons. sheesh. soon enough I'll get a DS but I'm poor and can't afford both. I got the PSP and have been happy ever since. o well. let's continue bickering like mad men!!!!
- molecool, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5eXactly!!! - techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Greeaat! Now I can go buy yet another overpriced "gaming" system with a horrible assortment of games, that are direct ports of other games, that aren't meant for short gaming sessions. Oh! And I also get to use crippled audio and video features! With no support for Divx or Xvid or H.264 or any other half good video format!
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Long live the DS. In my mind it takes the cake simply because you can close the system and it auto pauses. Perfect for the short gaming sessions.
- Cyhwuhx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3.::: Sony is actually opening up to Memory Stick bootable software in the coming fall (mentioned during the announcement last week). Now that doesn't guarantuee anything (and they would be mad to allow the more morally dubious programs) but still, it's a start.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, and I'm sure when they do they'll make it so only Sony bootable programs work, and by booting one of them, it automatically deletes all the other homebrew software you have, while making it impossible to add it back on.
- fani, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4I already bought a PSP and am very very happy with it. I really bought it just for gaming but found out it could do much more - it plays music, videos, movies, photos and best of all - I can do web-browsing on my psp plopped on my bed at night. Simply awesome. Its got awesome graphics and sound and good games.
Its really a mature gaming device truly reflecting the current tech era. It has its negative points too - long load times, fragile and not easy to put videos on it till you start getting the hang of it, crappy umd format, expensive memory sticks. Sony still has a lot to learn but hey at least I can play GTA on the go.
MS wants to have a go - well then go ahead I say. Lets see what they do ( I don't expect much anyways. However, their policy is embrace, extend and destroy and their exceedingly good at it )
Nintendo DS is an archaic gaming handheld belonging in 1995. Nintendo DS is meant for 8 year girls and you'll see the nintendo fangirls going ga-ga over it. With its crappy blocky look.
The first time I saw this dude with it, I thought he was applying make-up. LOL. I'm not going to buy a DS till they make it appealing. I'm tired of hearing about the same stupid jell-duh or mario games everytime.- nugget, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The only thing I did not like about your post was the flame of the DS. It is a very nice system and It does deserve its fair share of credit. It has some great graphics and can play some very great games. I just want to know if you have ever played the DS? Have carried one around and played with it through out the day? It has some really great games that you can just pick up and play plus the Wi-Fi gaming means you can find people online when your in a hotspot or at home with your wireless router. And it is very inovattive and does not belong in 1995.
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Considering that they've not made a Zelda game yet, and the first true Mario game (Mario and Luigi, albeit fun, isn't what you're thinking of) has yet to be released, your statement doesn't hold much weight. Have you looked at the game catalogue for the DS? Compare for me the original titles on the DS to the non-ported games (including GTA and Need for Speed) of the PSP. You'll see that the DS has the better catalogue. When movies made for your handheld out sell the games, you know you've got a problem.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, I don't think I've heard of anything so wrong in my life. Maybe you should actually PLAY a DS before saying something stupid and ignorant about it. Just because a game doesn't have blood and gore doesn't mean it's not fun. Also, the DS has been my favorite handheld system ever: Coming from a person who's played the PSP, the DS, and all the gameboys ever.
- EmperorSamoth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I do not like the DS either. I would like to get the PSP or this Microsoft handheld.
- nugget, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For them to market this to more than just their fanboys they are going to have to either do something extremly creative and keep the price down, or market it to people who don't already have an iPod and PSP/DS/GBA because if it plays videos and games but you have iPod video and a handheld already why are you going to want to buy another product like that when you could just buy more games and videos? And the stuff about them ripping off the DS touch sreen relates to the fact that it is done before and they are not doing anything new and creative for a game system, not that it was not around before the DS, just it was not widly used until the DS brought it to games.
- calums, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0My god what a bizarre package in that photo... Hopefully that's not what it actually looks like. I thought this was what the origami was going to be, anyway

- cmdrNacho, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I just read about another microsoft portable gaming device.. mp3 player..etc.. its called Origami.. maybe i should post that too
- jedi55555, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Uh, that is not a gaming device. It can play games but that is not what it is meant for. Also, the Origami was just a code name for the project, the devices are not made by microsoft, they just make the software.
- spiderland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wish that article would link to its sources. Here it is:
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/business/technology/14143734.htm- tbind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed. References these days is far too marginal, and should be properly credited.
- thespace, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They're just freaked out because they think Apple is coming out with a tablet/vid device April 1st. I mean why do I need a portable gaming system if Apple can make a super small tablet?
- oneMadRssn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://www.gp2x.com/
dual cpu. linux based. biggest homebrew scene. runs on regular batteries. costs much less than PSP. and the best part is its not made by sony of microsoft.
enough said.- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What he said.
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So long as it doesn't take a week to load a game of Pro Evo, I'll be happy. God damn PSP ripped me right off.
- noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Uh, yes, it's called Origami.
- koshak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Origmai was never meant to be a gaming device! People on this board just ASSUMED that. It is for work use mostly.
Keep in mind that most of what you read in the comment section on digg is filled with inaccuracy. - jedi55555, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1See other comment about Origami not being a gaming device.
- br8k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0A PENIS would be considered more of a PORTABLE gaming device than Origami would be. :)

- PBz13, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1This looks so fake.
On the PSP thing, I fought it for so long (tried the DS with the kiddie games) and finally got the PSP. I am 30 and getting to play Wipeout again (without the mind altering stuff) since college has me stoked. Being 30 and single, I will buy them all if I like'em and I will admit I sure do hate Sony.. but the PSP just looks so good..- jedi55555, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It is a mock up. No wonder mis-information spreads like wildfire on the net.
- tomkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not likely real. if that is their first 'edition' of their idea, it will fail in a miserable mess of corporate goo.
i'm pretty sure microsoft said they were interested in conquering the home-based entertainment market. this portable contradicts them largely. so either microsoft is going to make this handheld, or they are just a sack of liars. they say products are made based on demand, and i really don't see anyone wishing for this hunk of plastic. - koshak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The comments are so hysterical. Already saying it will fail. Based on what? It is not going to fail based on YOUR blind hatred of Microsoft people! You know NOTHING about the device, yet you exclaim it will fail. And you don't realize how stupid that makes you look?
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1me, i claim *****
no actual links to anything official.. just blog after blog.
Booo to false rumors just to get on digg front page. - lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1But will it run Linux?
Oh wait, Microsoft. Probably not. - echosierratwo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1If true, makes sense.
- ozid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lets saturate the market a little more. Unless it plays DVD's or HDDVDS or Blu Ray (but I doubt being thats a sony product ATM), it will get chumped by the PSP. It already has its feet in the ground, and the UMD format is at least selling decently. Nobody is going to want to buy another format of disc for this. Sony almost made a huge mistake with the UMD as it is.
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i hope that photo is just a photoshopped image. seeing as how this was just confirmed today, i'm sure it is; but, if it's not, then that is going to be the worst portable gaming device EVER. i mean, the layout of the xbox controller is bad enough. now, it looks like we're gonna have a portable gaming device TWICE the length of your hand that also comes with a bad button layout.
- dogoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1pretty cool if its legit
i mean playing HALO on a handheld device would kick ass. - KSava, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I CLEARLY rememer that picture being proven fake.
- dbt777, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0NO, that picture is real! It looks e-MAZING!
