- QuantumNighmare, on 11/05/2009, -1/+34Apple's market share was 17.3% last year, this year it's 18%.
RIM's market share was 15.2% last year, this year it's 21%.
So which exciting company is growing at a fast pace and taking over smartphones, and which company is stagnating? - QuantumNighmare, on 11/05/2009, -0/+26I got those numbers from the article presently being dugg. The, uh, one at the top of the page.
- MattBlackCat, on 11/04/2009, -4/+22"The Symbian monoculture is rapidly shrinking"
Is hardly an objective assessment based on the data
"(there does not seem to be much global market potential for the Palm Pre)."
So there is no market for a device that syncs with itunes and is cheaper than an iphone? - rmflagg, on 11/04/2009, -7/+22Let's see what this looks like in one years time. I bet the number of Android phones will be quite remarkable.
- myon87, on 11/04/2009, -3/+13The Palm Pre does not sync with itunes...anymore :P
- czarcasm, on 11/05/2009, -0/+9So,you could only sync the Pre with itunes every other day?
- diggbigwig, on 11/05/2009, -3/+10Xactly! The iphone is all hype, smoke and mirrors. Now that all the fanboys have an iphone, the numbers are leveling off. And the iphone continues to be dominated from a market share standpoint.
- gllopc, on 11/05/2009, -1/+8You had me agreeing with until your last comment.
- slipdisc2, on 11/05/2009, -1/+7Contrary to the advertising we all see, RIM isnt trying to make sparkles. They make honest to goodness smart phones that can be deployed in a corporate environment. And those "corporate drones"? They don't have time for sparkles either. Too busy generating those billions of dollars everyday in economies in this country and around the world.
- pyrophire, on 11/05/2009, -0/+6What about HTC for hardware and Android for software? They seem to be doing a good job and with it being open they seem to have a wide open road ahead of them
- Shadoblak, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5wait a day
- ohreilly, on 11/05/2009, -1/+6"iPhone, RIM taking over smartphone market"
Is that the AppleInsider way of spinning that Symbian lost a whole 0.6% marketshare in a year, RIM gaining a healthy 5.8%, and Apple getting a whopping 0.7%? (I also note they've rounded in the graphs - making the iPhone look slightly better)
I don't think the iPhone is really taking over. Even Android did better. - kbcool, on 11/05/2009, -1/+6While to go before they start taking over the market. Nokia still has more than both of them combined.
Look at the phone market overall and you see the pure scale of it. The fastest growing segment is developing countries and people in those countries want/need sub $100 phones. Apple and RIM just can't compete here. Whereas Symbian can scale down to a $100 phone and still work I'd like to see that Apple do that. RIM manage it to an extent. - hardeep1singh, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4Its the OS that owns the Smartphone market.
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/10656_Com ... - ohplease, on 11/05/2009, -3/+7BlackBerry Enterprise Server has no equivalent in the enterprise market, so you don't know what the ***** you're talking about at all.
- rebrad, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3This is old news. After Friday this will all change.
- Junior612, on 11/05/2009, -2/+5I'm selling my 16 gig iPhone (3G, 3.1.2, jailbroken, carrier unlocked) and my Storm (1) to buy a Droid on Friday. ***** ATT. And too little too late for BBOS.
- Junior612, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3Oh so you've had the Droid for a week already? Damn! Maybe you can give me a hands on review?
Do you really think I give a flying ***** about the quality of the camera on my phone? You must be more shallow than I thought.
Thanks for trying though. - KboT, on 11/05/2009, -1/+4With the large amount of Carriers being added to the iPhone's roster (Canada, for example) and technology advancing as it does, is it hard to see devices like the 3G and 3GS being as easy/cheap to pick up as iPods are now a days? iPhones may someday soon mimic iPods in the sense of how common and easy to come by they are ("Everyone and their Grandmother has one"). RIM is kind of doing this right now, Curves/Pearls are easy and cheap to get and everyone's picking them up.
- slipdisc2, on 11/05/2009, -2/+4Sounds about right. I dont see any major shifts in the next year except android. Symbian and RIM will always be out front. Apple has wowed us all with the iphone but, I dont think it will EVER rule the smart phone market unless it becomes a lot more open system. But technically that's not the market apple is after with the current offering.
That being said, I see the market remaining as it is today (with marginal gains from the big players) at least another 12 months. Android is the one to watch though. - mirunit, on 11/05/2009, -1/+3Symbian really isn't that bad, look at it on the SE Satio and Samsung Omnia HD. Also, now that it is open source, I could see it seriously standing against Android. Blackberry OS and Iphone OS are targeted toward a different, much more American market. NOTE: I have owned several S60 devices, 2 Maemo devices, and a iPhone 3GS.

Let me know how you go after using the Droid for a week or so...
Also interesting RE the Droid's specs is the fact that "more megapixels" doesn't translate to a better phone camera :

(comparison of droid pics vs iphone pics) - gllopc, on 11/05/2009, -2/+3You'll get a lot of diggs simply due to the recent release and popularity of the Droid.
- deadbaby, on 11/05/2009, -3/+4The Pre is the same price as the low end iPhone ($99) If you're referring to service plans you can't make any logical conclusions about possible GSM pricing based on what Sprint is doing in the US. Sprint is in a unique situation due to their massive loss of customers over the last few years. They are only offering good pricing because they have to.
- ohreilly, on 11/05/2009, -1/+2"Also interesting RE the Droid's specs is the fact that "more megapixels" doesn't translate to a better phone camera :"
Quite right. This is where Apple fail in having only a 2MP camera with ***** lens. Nokia on the other hand have not only been upping the megapixels, but putting half-decent lenses (Zeiss) in.
I also note that Nokia's phones have been able to do video for years - something that only came recently to the 3GS thanks to more Apple artificial lockouts. - mrBitch, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1@ ohreilly, RE: " .. Quite right. This is where Apple fail in having only a 2MP camera with ***** lens. "
Looks like that crappy 2MP camera on the iPhone does a better job at capturing pictures than the far "superior by megapixel count" Droid camera :

(comparison of droid pics vs iphone pics) - Junior612, on 11/05/2009, -1/+2Hey thanks for your input and all. But Friday is the 6th and the ETF raise is the 15th.
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/11/04/confirme ... - hardeep1singh, on 11/05/2009, -1/+2Biggest losers are HTC, Motorola and Windows Mobile. All this infographic tells you is 'Market Composition changes within the US market.'
- ehaugan, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Also, have fun paying an extra $30 a month for tethering!!!!
- postalblowfish7, on 11/05/2009, -2/+2yeah, let's see!
- ohplease, on 11/05/2009, -2/+2I doubt the Pre will be syncing with itunes for much longer.
- HotLeper, on 11/05/2009, -5/+4I had no idea. Sounds like it's time for a rim job.
- MacHarborGuy, on 11/05/2009, -3/+2wait two days and it, yet again, won't sync
- ehaugan, on 11/05/2009, -2/+1Have fun with the $350 ETF they just raised from $250!
- maddHavoc, on 11/04/2009, -4/+2Took*
- inactive, on 11/05/2009, -14/+12Well no *****. Of course the "iPhone taking over market" is going to hold true when your source is from APPLE Insider.
I don't doubt that iPhone sales are increasing, but don't you think that Apple Insider is going to be a little biased? (Sorry I had to explain that; its necessary for the ***** on Digg.) - moog, on 11/05/2009, -3/+1The proof is in the fruit?
- llamaba, on 11/05/2009, -5/+1Pie chart or it didn't ha-
oops, never mind. - pissshivers, on 11/05/2009, -6/+2wtf is Symbian?
- DulcetTone, on 11/05/2009, -12/+3RIM is dead in 5 years. They provide sparkless phones for the unpromotible corporate drone.
- protodon, on 11/05/2009, -27/+1That depends on where you got those numbers
