- Topher06, on 07/03/2009, -3/+20um yeah, missed the boat completely on this one.
Put the iPhone screen one inch away from your eye and how much information can you read, maybe a dozen words at the most, a small part of a picture. Hardly good for a camera viewfinder.
And in any case, smaller screens need higher DPI, period. You sit 8 - 12 feet away from a 42" television so the pixels blend in and there is a point where the higher resolution won't make much of a difference. But most people can read very fine detail on printed material and so higher DPI devices for mobile products is the natural evolution and they ain't anywhere there yet. Having to zoom in and scroll endlessly to read a web page on the iPhone is retarded which is why I don't use the "real web" on my iPhone, but having much higher DPI screens means finer detailed text which means smaller font sizes that will allow for more information to be seen on the whole screen. Also, if my iPhone displayed pictures with the finest resolution as an actual photograph I will be much happer rather then seeing starcasing and blur from photos being scaled and streched or shrunk to fit. I hope to see 1000+ DPI screens in the near future. The more the better in my opinion. - zephc, on 07/03/2009, -3/+16ill take take two, semitransparent, overlaid in my field of vision. Also, include a neural interface - I'm tired of having to use my hands to access data.

- piieerrrree, on 07/03/2009, -0/+10It's a bit more than 6 millimeters. /estimation
- rockdawg, on 07/03/2009, -1/+8That would ROCK!
- carbonetc, on 07/03/2009, -0/+7Well, since the ideal interface (short of wetware) for some sort of augmented reality system would be an OLED-ish display embedded in a contact lens, I'd say this is a pretty damn significant innovation.
But you're welcome to keep needlessly mounting big boxy displays everywhere a decade from now if it makes you happy. - heyimcamcook, on 07/03/2009, -1/+7I wish there was a "buried for comments" option.
- charlietuna, on 07/03/2009, -1/+6oh ***** that's all wrong:
~$ perl -MMath::Trig -e '$mm_rad=(0.27/2)*25.4;printf "%f\n", atan(1)*4*($mm_rad**2);'
36.938975 mm^2
Argh - charlietuna, on 07/03/2009, -1/+6perl -MMath::Trig -e '$mm_rad=0.27 / 25.4;printf "%f\n", atan(1)*4 * ($mm_rad^2);'
or
6.283185 mm^2 - JackOpfor, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5This is really great hopefully the consumer market will see HMD with a min res 1280x1024 per eye. We have been stuck with sub 800x600 that cost way to much.
- zip22, on 07/03/2009, -1/+5projectors, viewfinders
- proliance, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4Either its a new spherical, 3D screen or someone confused diameter with diagonal.
- rockdawg, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3pure goodness :)

- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Yeah, remember Virtual I/O? Used to be in Seattle, applied for a job there (didnt get it). Those were reasonably priced (400$?), but never made it beyond 640x480, which, at the time, would have been fine for Quake or Decent2. This was 1995 I think. 14 years later, we have not made much progress.
- jman583, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Just RTFA.
- JackOpfor, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2The prices have actually gone up in the last year. It may have something to do with increased demand from the defense industry.
- moduc, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2I don't know why you get dug down. Maybe because your screen name. But I was thinking the same thing. If it's that small, with that resolution, it means a bit larger one can have much higher resolution, 1080p for example. We can actually take several of these and add up. The alignment is a bit tricky, but doable (many older projectors do that).
The beautiful thing about this is not only the size of the projector, but it's the light output. DIY projectors are plagued by light output amount. I build DIY projectors myself, so I know. With small LCD, it's possible to have lens that captures all lights and have a cool projector (not hot, literally), low power. Currently, DIY projectors only uses about 1/3 to 1/4th of the light output even with reflector and condenser. - sndream, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2Breaking News: Virtual Boy 2 to be launched in 2010.
- theaceoffire, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2Vegeta, what does the scouter say about his power level?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Graphics_Array
The VGA supports both All Points Addressable graphics
modes, and alphanumeric text modes. Standard graphics
modes are:
* 640×480 in 16 colors
* 640×350 in 16 colors
* 320×200 in 16 colors
* 320×200 in 256 colors (Mode 13h)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I wouldn't call 320x200 resolution VGA either, but it apparently qualifies as VGA. - majortom1981, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2This means that they can make say a 32 inch tv with even better resolution
- switchman401, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1Is that the new screen for the iPod pequeño?
- darthom, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Holy Magnifying Glass, Batman! Nicholas Cage's oh-so-80s eye-piece from 'Firebirds' now fits in your oh-so-60s Bat-Belt and our oh-so-50s friend the Incredible Shrinking Man is no longer size challenged.
- starsky51, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1I was actually hoping for a rick roll then. What's wrong with me?
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Its worth some initial investment.
- Culyt, on 07/03/2009, -2/+3Maybe now we will start to see some inexpensive and lite-weight, VR glasses with a decent resolution.
No longer have need a computer monitor, just have the VR glasses do it.
Add some way to get the orientation like the iPhone or Wii and bluetooth for GPS and Internet access, and get augmented reality like in Rainbows End. - gheide, on 07/03/2009, -1/+2The Microsoft ads on Digg are more annoying than the "say something" smiley ads...
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -2/+2lol, what a burry graveyard!
I really hope some VR love can come of this, if they can only make it cheaper. I can see rich people spending 1,000$ for Sims3 or Second Life, which should get the ball rolling for mass production. - richdiggins, on 07/03/2009, -0/+0oh, you mean like this?
http://www.physorg.com/news119797260.html - uldreg, on 07/03/2009, -8/+80.27 inches doesn't say anything to me.
- slashdotordigg, on 07/03/2009, -1/+1You get your free unintended but successful Lasik after watching a Disney film on it....
- davesaunders, on 07/03/2009, -1/+1So does this mean there will be a new iPod Shuffle?
- Yourselves, on 07/03/2009, -2/+2Yeah, but the quicker we develop higher dpi screens, the quicker low-res sprites become history. Even hand-held games are starting to fade away from them.
I'll miss them. =( - sb66, on 07/03/2009, -1/+1The 90's are long gone and I am STILL WAITING for decent Virtual Reality gear...these screens are a step in the right direction.
- jurassiqpark, on 07/03/2009, -1/+1IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAAND!
- DaNuKaSAN, on 07/03/2009, -1/+1Imagine...pimp rings that flash graphics and ***** across screens on each finger...
- aforsberg, on 07/03/2009, -3/+3Diameter?
- NegativeDigg, on 07/06/2009, -0/+0^^^ exactly my thoughts, I hate having to use a 15" LCD with fresnel lenses. It's way to expensive right now to buy a decent 1080p projector. The biggest problem with projectors too is the life of the bulb because 2000-3000 hrs isn't enough.
- waytofuck, on 07/04/2009, -0/+0Yes that is the question... wtf...
- Spaztiq, on 07/03/2009, -1/+1Just curious what technology like this could do to Hi-Def televisions in the future? The DPI that could be obtained with such tiny pixels would be stunning. Of course, one would need a suitable camera to record in such an insane resolution...
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -2/+2under 9000
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -1/+1So this is big screen for a Smurf? Really, what good is this? Try packing all those tiny pixels on a 50+" display (along with a content delivery system to take advantage of the higher resolution) then I'll be impressed.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -2/+1According to this site, there is.
http://tinyurl.com/mljpf8 - NegativeDigg, on 07/03/2009, -3/+2Future of super small projectors! I know it's only 480p but it's still something....
- umanomano, on 07/03/2009, -2/+1wee
- rockdawg, on 07/03/2009, -2/+1BoOyah!
lol - Arachnivore, on 07/03/2009, -2/+1There was a point while I was reading the point you put forth, when I realized that you missed the point.
- shadowspawn, on 07/03/2009, -3/+2But can it run crysis?
