- HotLeper, on 10/31/2009, -2/+70I hate that Verizon logo that sticks out like a sore thumb.
- USAFdude, on 10/31/2009, -9/+73I hope it lives up to the hype, but why do people feel it necessary to bash the iPhone in order to prop up this phone? Say what u want about apple and it's iPhone, but do you remember what phone's where like before the iPhone? Hate it or Love the iPhone was a game changer and paved the road for any successor.
- philomatic, on 10/31/2009, -12/+56Actually, the article says, "Is it better than the iPhone? No."
- razrielle, on 10/31/2009, -2/+39Its because Motorola isn't using their own OS
- EtherGnat, on 10/31/2009, -2/+38I'm excited about the Droid and will be buying one on launch day, and have been a frequent iPhone critic, but comments like yours drive me nuts.
The Droid is "better" for whom? For what purpose? There is no universal "best". You have to consider who the phone is for and how it will be used. There are a lot of things the iPhone is really good at making it a great phone for many people. There are a lot of things the Droid is really good at, making it the best phone for many people (including me).
Declarations like this just fan fanboy flame wars though and serve no purpose. - PFS1, on 10/31/2009, -1/+37The keys are like right next to each other.
- Telexen, on 10/31/2009, -5/+31I'll be picking mine up early friday...can't wait.
- Nerfdude, on 10/31/2009, -6/+29typo.
- macfan93, on 10/31/2009, -2/+25I'll be getting the droid the day it releases.
I am very excited to see if Verizon will finally pair a decent phone that isn't locked down with their amazing service. - clippclop, on 10/31/2009, -10/+31What about RIMs market share. Why compare only to iPhone.
It's not like the iPhone is the be all, end all of phones. - idiggitall, on 10/31/2009, -1/+22The video camera is pretty awesome
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1DiOeK8vLU - SolidSnak, on 11/01/2009, -2/+22So... has no one mentioned the 256MB app storage limit yet? It may have 16GB of storage through the SD card but it only has something like 256MB of on board storage and google won't let you install apps on something other than the non removable storage for obvious reasons. I was getting pretty excited for this phone until I read that. I read it here http://androidandme.com/2009/10/news/google-fails- ...
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 10/31/2009, -3/+22Fair points, but, judging from the screenshots, Droid's UI design looks perfectly modern to me.
I strongly suspect that you don't remember what cell phones were in 1999.
Look here: http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/10/23/motorola ... - spworm, on 10/31/2009, -10/+29before the iphone:
-phones could be used to make calls
-send text messages
-had a battery life of up to two weeks. - Nerfdude, on 10/31/2009, -4/+18Enjoy. I've been using a G1 since last November; Android is a godlike operating system. It's taken over T-Mobile, it won't take long to do the same to Verizon, and then Sprint pretty soon, and eventually it will fight the ultimate battle on the ATT front.
Perhaps, in time, people will get over the touchscreen-only fad and remember how great real keyboards are. - mmittimm, on 10/31/2009, -0/+12http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/predicti ...
- zer0mass, on 11/01/2009, -2/+14An often overlooked point. I'm a die hard Android fan, but RIM is the business smart phone which the iPhone rarely claims to be. Android may be able to dethrone RIM but it hasn't yet and neither has the iPhone.
- jv2k, on 11/01/2009, -1/+12 Nonworking display models are always an awful indication for how the buttons are.
- dagamer34, on 11/01/2009, -1/+11People in NYC have plenty of reasons to dump their iPhone. AT&T's service just plain sucks. And that's the Achille's heel of the iPhone platform; the one thing they can't control is cell phone service.
I'm anxious to see if Verizon's network really is up to snuff. I mean, their 3G footprint is larger, but I'll rarely travel to any of those places. I might take it out on the open road to see whether 3G stays connected when on a road trip. That'll be interesting to experience.
By the way, does anyone know if there are tethering plans available? - Leonffs, on 11/20/2009, -9/+19What people don't seem to get is that it's about BRANDING and content (APPS). Look at the PSP and the DS. The PSP is 20 times a better machine than the DS, but the Nintendo portable brand and the games triumphed.
The droid could be technically a beast compared to the iPhone, but that's not going to change the legions of iZombies from buying the iphone in droves. - DCstewieG, on 11/01/2009, -0/+10I think the Motorola one is worse. You look at the iPhone or the Pre and they're nice and clean on the front, sticking the logos on the back.
- MonoDede, on 10/31/2009, -3/+13Not everyone uses iTunes. I hate that piece of ***** software. It might have gotten better, but it sucked massive balls when I last used it and I don't plan on downloading it again.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 10/31/2009, -2/+12This phone is hardly "clunky." 5MP camera with flash, slide out tactile keyboard, 16GB expandable memory, and all in a package nearly the same size as the iPhone which has none of those things.
That's not my definition of "clunky." It might not have all the rounded edges of the iPhone, but that hardly qualifies as poor design.
I doubt this will be as easily usurped as you seem to think, though I do look forward to competing Android products. I think the Droid has set the bar pretty high for the competition. - theparaiba, on 11/01/2009, -1/+10No, it won't sell well. The average consumer doesn't care whether it's an open platform or not. They only care about "sexyness". You know it's true.
- FOR3MAN, on 11/01/2009, -1/+10I own an iPhone, rather than be a fanboy, I see it as this. Competition benefits US the consumers. This is a good thing. There is plenty of room in the market.
- lukas88, on 10/31/2009, -0/+9Thought I would do a google image search for a cell phone from 1999. Yep, I can definitely see how you could get this UI confused with android.
http://www.ppiimages.com/pics/NOKIA-5190-B.JPG - UselessTrivia, on 11/01/2009, -1/+10The pre is a nice phone. The small size is useful for some people, though I think when it comes to smartphones almost everyone wants a bigger screen. The iphone-sized screen seems to be the sweet spot right now. Any bigger and the phone would be too big. Any smaller and the screen isn't very enjoyable to use.
- Antialias, on 11/01/2009, -0/+9If you could save apps to the sd card it would be easy to get them onto a computer to copy and or crack to pirate to other phones. Not that it really stops anybody but it's one of those things companies do to appease their developer base.
- Logan395, on 10/31/2009, -4/+12they've been saying this ***** about every new touch screen that's come out over the last year or so. everyone's throwing out the term "iphone killer" like candy, but we've yet to see anyone actually deliver.
- Switch07, on 11/01/2009, -1/+9...and thats about all they did.
- mightycbu, on 11/01/2009, -3/+11i think it's main competitor is Windows mobile. i hope Android will eliminate WinMo, so we'll have a nice line-up to choose from with some great competition among them:
-BlackBerry
-iPhone
-Android - Tyrghast, on 11/01/2009, -1/+9out of the box off on a low battery charge and the first time it's been turned on since the factory, that's an almost blindingly fast startup time.
- DCstewieG, on 11/01/2009, -2/+10I like my Pre too. People seem to have written it off already which is too bad. It doesn't have a good number of apps yet but the form factor and OS are really nice.
- ibdav, on 11/01/2009, -0/+8Nothing is a sure-fire hit.
- lukas88, on 10/31/2009, -1/+9I have not used motorola's take on android, but I have used google's version extensively and I can't imagine the interface is as bad as you say it is (not that I am questioning your expertise in examining screenshots). Android has a simple yet very effective UI natively, and it is hard to imagine them making it unusable. Some people will like the iPhone UI better, but it is a matter of preference. Both are quite functional and a major leap ahead of phones 10 years ago, contrary to your claim.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 10/31/2009, -1/+9Even better:
http://cnettv.cnet.com/motorola-droid-verizon-wire ...
Saying this interface looks the least bit dated is just silly. It might not be quite as slick as the iPhone's, but it's absolutely competitive. - Topher06, on 10/31/2009, -44/+52Its all in the design. I mean, Droid is going nowhere if companies keep skinning android with gawd aweful interfaces. One of the reasons why a company like Motorola is losing out to Apple is that their phones implement UI similar to phones from 10 years ago.
Features are important, but the UI accesses those features, and having some crappy amateur lackluster UI to access those features is going to leave a bad taste in many peoples mouths.
I have a phone that could play music, I choose not to use it because it uses some junky Java based music player that looks circa Windows 3.1, I would rather carry around an extra iPod Touch in addition to my phone just to listen to music.
Lets face it, there is going to be a ton on phones out there that are going to do all largely the same thing. Access the web, play games or music, have a slew of utility apps, oh, and make phones calls and text messages. The phones that are going to win customers over are the ones that are going to stand above the rest with impressive hardware and software design, and judging from the screenshots for the Motorola Droid, they failed (again) on both accounts.
HTC gets it and I am seeing this company quickly overtake the "traditional" phone companies in the post-iPhone era, but Nokia and Motorola couldn't design a good UI to save their lives, which is why I predict they will either leave the phone market or die in it regardless if it runs something like Droid on them. - DavidTrom, on 10/31/2009, -2/+9Sounds like this will be out just around the time that iPhone exclusive contract with AT&T expires,
Interesting.... - lexbaby, on 11/01/2009, -0/+7You could, but it would probably take some Linux knowledge and a number of steps to do so. Mainstream users probably wouldn't bother.
- anthropodeus, on 11/01/2009, -1/+8if a fisher price OS can do multitasking and GPS for free, what does that make the iPhone?
- jv2k, on 11/01/2009, -3/+10Iphone fans can complain about Android's UI when apple let's you change your backgrounds and run programs in the backgrounds.
- krisrm, on 11/01/2009, -0/+7Buried, and I wish I could do it again. Why are you equating "design" with a good user interface? Having a good UI means that using the underlying features (the media player, the camera, the phone) of your device is straightforward and simple. Design refers to the look and feel of the device and it's user interface. They're completely different things; why do people always treat them as one-and-the-same? A beautifully *designed* interface does not make up for: A: missing features, and B: an over-complicated or inefficient user interface. Also, if you're prepared to shell out $3000 over two years for a phone based on how pretty the media player is, I have a watch to sell you...
- UselessTrivia, on 11/01/2009, -0/+6That doesn't end until 2010 and it's probably going to be renewed unless a major competitor starts chipping away at iphone marketshare in the next 6 months.
Droid will probably be a pretty good phone, but it won't be an iphone killer. To do that it needs to become an object of desire and a status symbol. Just being better isn't enough. - kook321, on 10/31/2009, -2/+8I feel the same way. But and wait until you see the Verizon plan, they charge for everything
- Cyberdactyl, on 10/31/2009, -12/+18I guess I'll get buried, but I looked at the iPhone, BB's and Droid's promised performance and picked the Palm Pre'
The smart phone war keeps shifting around these large phones, the size of a 3/8" stack of index cards, and to me, about as attractive.
If people want to carry around these monsters, I guess it's their choice. The Pre offers close, and in some cases, (multi-tasking anyone) more than these phones, not to mention the aesthetic feel of the 'card' GUI in a comfortably hand sized two week old soap bar.. . .
The icing was the low data plan and minutes, the lowest of the smartphones.
- Black6x, on 11/01/2009, -2/+8Apple's biggest stronghold is in large cities, like NYC. High population, and good coverage by AT&T however, if you live in those huge 3G gaps that you see on their map, you're not going to rush to the iPhone. Verizon have a larger coverage, and their base is going to be built by the people in the gaps. If you travel and need 3G in some weird places like Maine, upstate NY, etc. If you never leave NYC, like some of my friends, there is no reason to dump the iPhone.
http://www.cellularmaps.com/3g_compare.shtml
Check the map, see the gaps. That's where Verizon is trying to grab people. - zer0mass, on 11/01/2009, -1/+6iTunes is useless when a large part of your music collection is Flac and ogg files.
- anthropodeus, on 11/01/2009, -5/+10somebody call a WAAAAAAAAAMBULANCE
does it really matter if people are saying "iPhone sucks"? it changes nothing, regardless of whether it's true or not. let the sales be the decider. - Spuy767, on 11/01/2009, -0/+5I always liked how Vz would take a phone that was out of the box capable of everything and then shove their ***** OS on it and make the phone worthless unless you bought features a la carte.
