- TexasShiv, on 12/03/2008, -0/+30FTA: The skill of the inspector is critical, says Bruce Harley, technical director at the nonprofit efficient-energy consultancy Conservation Services Group. For infrared technology to be effective and useful, he said, the inspector has to have expertise in using the equipment and interpreting the data.
AKA: Pay me a premium to tell you where I see blue. - bowlagoat, on 12/03/2008, -0/+28exactly what one would expect an infrared camera to see....
- amheidt, on 12/03/2008, -2/+14Well that was boring.

- ofenza, on 12/03/2008, -0/+7An arrow points to a spot on a wall above a window in this kitchen.
- palehorse864, on 12/03/2008, -0/+7Why does Gordon Freeman's cousin have an infrared camera?
- PeteBeast, on 12/01/2008, -1/+6Pretty neat... If you were a ghostbuster.
- Valinoti, on 12/03/2008, -0/+5For your convenience: 12 page mediocre slide show about the utilization of advanced infrared imaging technology along with MS Paint to show how some house is losing heat.
- macslut, on 12/03/2008, -1/+611 pages and not a single infrared picture of somebody farting.
Seriously, hand over your technology to someone else. - Ghoztt, on 12/03/2008, -0/+5Okay.... now how much does a camera like that cost? Over 9000 dollars?
- radu79, on 12/03/2008, -0/+4Too bad that those things cost the price of heating your home for like 6 years..
- jjamminjon, on 12/03/2008, -0/+4Whoa, there sure is a lot of heat escaping from someones lap in that computer chair.
- nikhil1986, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3Oh NO!!! Boston.com starting slideshows? :(:(
It really is the death of simplicity - bonius, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3Using it for winterizing your home, I did the same with new house installation with the walls and vent and window area's..
- jasonh1234, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3Obviously didn't read the article.
But from the street... detecting Marijuana Grow-Ops. - scout29c, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3Interesting article, however, they should have had more shots of the view through the camera. Like duh - what’s the story about, anyway.
- spaceman84, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2Worthwhile if you run a growhouse.
- elislider, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2ok hold on for a sec. how the ***** is this frontpage material?
- valkyries, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2Fluke makes a camera like this, and it has this cool feature were it will take live video and overlay IR video just over the hot spots.
- brandar, on 12/03/2008, -1/+39000+ dollars... or one dead Predator! (assuming you can interface with the helmet)
- radu79, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2Yes, and you will have to hire that guy a few times after each improvement in the insulation (think of it like of a debugger).
- nutvoot, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2What happen to one-page gallery from boston.com?
- TheKappa, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2This article doesn't answer what I've always wondered- can an infrared camera register the warmth of my farts?
- haikuFU, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Right, an LWIR sensor, like I noted above.
- themastersb, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Pedobear must always be on your mind...
- canreacchio, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Whats it with all these multipaged top diggs... like seriously, how hard is it to have multiple paragraphs on one page? i believe the code is simply ... oh wait that looks complicated... i think we better create a new page.
- Medicamusic, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1my actual snakes....
- jkerrigan, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1What does an infrared camera see? Into the head? Into the heart? Does it see into me? Clearly? Or darkly?
- inactive, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1damm boring.
- radu79, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Those things are NIR (near infrared).
To sens the heat, you need a far IR sensor, which are expensive. - cnycompguy, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1The camera featured in the article is the "affordable model" which is 12,000 Euros, or just over $15,000 USD.
- 13373h4X0r, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Most. Exploited. Narc. Evar.
Pro tip: Quit your job, move far away from your insane roommates, and do something about your drug-induced schizophrenia... But keep the stealth suit! =) Or is it: %^) Or: #;-P One never knows with that stealth suit!!! - TheKappa, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1"It's... one of our little toys."
- Chjoma10, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1anyone else see the illusion of a clown-like face on that thumbnail pic, caused by the guy's chin shadow?
- siszam, on 12/03/2008, -1/+2You can hire someone to do an energy audit for far less than the cost of heating for six years. You don't have to buy your own camera.
- pbuschma, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1boston.com sucks.
- inactive, on 12/03/2008, -0/+11. Fun
2. Improving your insulation? - se7en11, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1You gotta love the internet. Now I don't have to research or try to record my ass with a camera because someone else has already done it.
- haikuFU, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Why are they so expensive? Can't you get a regular video camera and replace the CCD with a LWIR CCD?
Surely a LWIR sensor does not cost several thousand. Cadillac is putting them in some of their cars, and the dealer cost on replacement cams is under $1k for the whole unit. - scout29c, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1If you live near a wooded area, point the camera toward the woods − especially at night − and see all manner of beasties - like rats - come out.
Also, since sexual arousal in humans causes blood to move to [your imagination goes here], you would be able to know who is turned on and who is not.
Oh, and the scene in Predator where we see the scorpion is way wrong. It’s a cold blooded animal, and even more so, it was dead. - bradleyland, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1One of my customers is a contractor who has a FLIR camera. The camera doesn't see "air", so you don't actually see the fart, but it does register the warm spot on your pants where the warm fart gas passes through. It's pretty easy to spot, because the crack of your ass normally shows up colder than the rest of your ass because your skin isn't in contact with your pants.
The reason you can't see farts on IR cameras is because the camera picks up emissive IR energy. The "hotter" something is, the more IR energy it gives off. The more dense an object, the greater the difference in emissive energy for a given temperature change. I hope that made sense. I'm no expert on IR, but that's how it was explained to me.
Normally I'm entertained by farts, but when the IR camera is brought it to the equation, it suddenly becomes gross. - 13373h4X0r, on 12/03/2008, -1/+1I think it would be hilarious if the editors added a subtle "666", or hexagram, or an upside-down crucifix, or a faint impression of a human skeleton, in a corner of the infra-red images, maybe partially cut off by the view shown on the screen of that camera -- just to fire up the public imagination...
Another funny possibility is of an image of something innocuous, like the heat loss around the door, but, upon closer inspection -- maybe so subtle that one only notices it clearly and unambiguously and unquestionably when it it pointed out -- that one can see the infra-red outlines of people having kinky sex in the next room. (I am reminded of that newspaper photo of a women in her bedroom, taken innocently enough for a human interest story, but which showed a pair of handcuffs fastened to a bed post! LOL!) - Ghoztt, on 12/03/2008, -1/+1But I hear it's smelly inside those helmets....
- keiths, on 12/03/2008, -1/+1I use one of these at work - http://www.mikroninfrared.com/Catalog.aspx?id=1074 ...
It costs about 15k - McMaster88, on 12/03/2008, -3/+3I think you can save more money by not buying a thermal infrared camera.
Also this is retarded.
buried. - Medicamusic, on 12/03/2008, -2/+2I thought of my snake.
- homelinux, on 12/03/2008, -2/+1I work for FLIR. That it's not the most affordable model. Our prices start at $3K ... for building applications you may need to go with a $5K model, though. And yes, this technology is pretty impressive.
