- us3rsearch, on 07/04/2009, -29/+342dugg for not naming iPod number one
- kyle212, on 07/04/2009, -12/+190I'm glad this beat the iPod, as Sony set the idea and apple simply improved it.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -11/+93Good. The original walkman was a huge game-changer for music fans in the 80's.
Off topic: My brother has a new sony mp3 walkman and the sound quality is amazing, makes my iPod classic with Sennheiser phones sound ***** embarrassing. - inactive, on 07/04/2009, -5/+72Why would they? Walkman started the whole trend.
- falser, on 07/04/2009, -4/+60I would have said the Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem which was the basis of all digital audio.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyquist%E2%80%93Shann ... - kezekiel, on 07/04/2009, -4/+60This was the device that let you take your music with you. That was a huge revolution at the time, as we were anchored to turntables and car stereos. If you weren't around to remember what that was like, it would probably be easy to dismiss but for us at the time... pure magic.
- RadiatedAnt, on 07/04/2009, -6/+51Oh no I hope the hipsters don't start packing tape players like its the cool thing to do now :(
sigh... - earthforce1, on 07/03/2009, -22/+62Boy, apple must be miffed!
- megaton, on 07/04/2009, -4/+37Dugg for being the nerdiest comment thus far.
- MasterGrief, on 07/04/2009, -3/+28Well, you have to hand it to Walkman for getting the idea of an extremely portable personal music player out there and widespread.
It would have happened eventually, but it was Walkman that seems to have really started it. - christoast, on 07/04/2009, -7/+32Are you kidding me? First of all, Apple did not invent the mp3 player (a German company did that and now they're rich as *****), they didn't invent mp3s, they didn't invent anything except maybe if you want to include "innovation," the scroll wheel. They just made an mp3 player that wasn't *****, that' all. 123bucklemyshoe, you don't know anything.
- TrevorBelmont, on 07/04/2009, -0/+24Shoulder mounted boom box FTW.
- EntropyFan, on 07/04/2009, -2/+25dugg for not naming something from the last 10 years.
Way too often with these lists (looking back 50-100 years), everyone seems to forget anything but the newest, latest stuff. - originaldna, on 07/04/2009, -8/+31Without the Sony Walkman there would be no iPod,zune or anyone of those portable music players.
it's not the numbers people, it the catalyst that started it all. - megaton, on 07/04/2009, -4/+27@123bucklemyshoe: You're either the brightest, most brilliant person on the face of this planet, or you're a 12 year old.
I'm going with the latter, since you couldn't seem to get your own nickname right. (PROTIP: You're only supposed to count to 2.) - digitalArtform, on 07/04/2009, -0/+19And before the Sony Walkman was the Sony transistor radio in your pocket
- theuniversal, on 07/04/2009, -1/+19The fact that the format has changed from tape to CD to MP3 etc. is secondary. The big step was in making music portable. I love my iPod(s), but it's only fair to admit that the iPod and all other portable music players stand on the shoulders of Sony's walkman. The walkman made music portable and started a revolution.
- MattBD, on 07/04/2009, -2/+19It's funny that you're extremely interested in science and programming, because apparently you don't know ***** about either.
- zuiquan, on 07/04/2009, -1/+18@jeriqo, are you kidding me? You've obviously never listened to two different players through the same headphones to make a comparison. Either that or you're missing big bands out of your detectable frequencies due to excessive noise/some childhood illness where you lost all hearing.
- megaton, on 07/04/2009, -2/+17Did your mom drop you?
- raptorlightning, on 07/04/2009, -7/+22Clearly the Compact Disc was inferior.
- megaton, on 07/04/2009, -2/+16Seeing as the Walkman invented the personal, portable music player, I'd say it deserves being picked as the most innovative in the last 50 years. The iPod is just iterative...
- doctordbx, on 07/04/2009, -3/+17Extremely interested in science and programming.... and trolling.
- bdbr, on 07/04/2009, -1/+15MP3 came in second.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -2/+16The iPod EQ is a ***** joke.
- christoast, on 07/04/2009, -4/+17LOL, what exactly is it that's wrong with you?
I know what the iPod is, what it does and whats in it. The iPod is an mp3 player.
Apple didn't invent the MP3 player. I can tell you didn't even know that, therefore - you have no idea what you're talking about. Oh, and most people on this site know a lot about computers & technology. - inactive, on 07/04/2009, -1/+14Drag and drop. Even works on linux out of the box apparently (main selling point for me).
- nonnald, on 07/04/2009, -2/+14looks like someone is stuck on shuffle
- BalancingAct, on 07/04/2009, -3/+15"I'm glad this beat the iPod, as Sony set the idea and apple simply improved it."
Sony didn't invent the Walkman. Andreas Pavel did. Here is the patent
http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PT ...
Sony refused to acknowledge him as the true inventor of the Walkman until they got successfully sued
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/16/world/americas/1 ... - megaton, on 07/04/2009, -1/+13Agreed.
Now, a classic Walkman + iPod mod would be pretty gnarly... - bdbr, on 07/04/2009, -5/+16I'm sure the billions of dollars they make selling iPods will placate their disappointment.
- medfreak, on 07/04/2009, -1/+12I deleted it. Some ***** put the Billy Mays meme comment from my PC on my digg account. Suffice to say, I hate memes.
- RadiatedAnt, on 07/04/2009, -1/+11screw that just get a sansa clip if your going for SQ its the best portable in terms of quality and it even plays oggs/flac to boot!
- christoast, on 07/04/2009, -1/+11@megaton
I laughed @ only supposed to count to 2. Look at his other comments, its pure hilarity. - 0260, on 07/04/2009, -3/+13I thought it was Archos, Cowon, iriver, Creative, Rio... those guys innovated
- RyFo18, on 07/04/2009, -1/+11You know he was listening to old Michael Jackson tapes.
- NeoTechni, on 07/04/2009, -1/+11"Unlike Sony, Apple knows how to continue innovating"
By copying everyone else - enozten, on 07/04/2009, -1/+11that's portable flash memory, not an ipod. ipod does not and has never had a monopoly on portable memory.
- Repeater2000, on 07/04/2009, -8/+17Actually Creative showed Apple how to steal a proper mp3 player design.
and then eventually pour it down the masses' throats. - Konrad9, on 07/04/2009, -2/+11Annnnnd the walkman is DIRECTLY responsible for the invention of the portable media player.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -1/+10Stop saying "game changer"! its no better than "paradigm shift" and makes you sound like a powerpoint pinhead who has 3 meetings a day and does no actual work.
- Spacejack, on 07/04/2009, -0/+8You would have made fun of someone for continuing to use a device that works? It's not like we can reclaim the iron or something, y'know.
- kreatre2007, on 07/04/2009, -4/+12Why would Apple be miffed? The Walkman started the idea of portable music. Apple is very happy about that. Sony totally screwed up the concept and totally ignored the changing needs and habits of the consumer.
- doctordbx, on 07/04/2009, -3/+11The walkman really was a gamechanger.
- o3man, on 07/04/2009, -0/+7The walkman was good because you could run while listening to my music. Just tuning in to my tunes on the radio was not as good because loud mouth DJs spoil the mood. Then came the CD that skips when you run, finally came the MP3 player and I can run again.
- 1hrSleep, on 07/04/2009, -1/+8This is why iPod is so popular. People are ignorant to the better quality... Everything. Headphones/Earphones (Only recently have IEMs absolutely flourished), the DAP, file encoding.
I love my Walkman + SA6 headphones (And a FIIO/iBasso amp) - P5ycHo, on 07/04/2009, -5/+12The iPod is a walkman.
The walkman was the first of it's kind. - NeoTechni, on 07/04/2009, -0/+7use the reply button
- bob_the_alien, on 07/04/2009, -2/+9good
- onimusha115, on 07/04/2009, -0/+7Yeah I'm sure thats why it was named #1, not because it was the best personal music player, but because it started the trend. The ipod is great, but may have not come into being yet if it wasn't started with cassettes years ago.
