USB Mini Fridge keeps the dorks cool
engadget.com — We know you've been waiting for it. Now finally, Brando brings you the $33 USB Mini Fridge. Sure, it takes 5 minutes to bring the fridge down to 8.5 degrees centigrade (47 degrees fahrenheit) and it holds just one can. But hey, it's a 5V USB-powered refrigerator dambit and that's worth it at any price.

Either way, I want one...and a usb microwave for my cambells noodle soup if I'm raiding or something and can't get up. - witooo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+70Where can i get the freezer for my ice cube?

I'm confused. You never would have heard about this without Engadget. So, is that what you would prefer? - streak, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3The original link is http://usb.brando.com.hk/prod_detail.php?prod_id=00286, for those of us who tire of Engadget's mindless regurgitation of all things real and imaginary.

Dude, you just blew my mind. Get on that right now.
You get it into production and I'll buy three. - wingnut21, on 10/11/2007, -9/+4Dear Diggers,
I would hold off buying this USB fridge. Rumor has it that a superior tech is just around the corner. It has more power, allowing larger fridges to be created. This new tech is called "AC Power" and is many times more powerful than a 5v USB connection.
Seriously, some of you would buy my ***** if it had a USB cable coming out from it. - jasonliman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0why not use it to cool down CPU

Digg's guidelines for submission state linking directly to the source content. It's good advice: People don't like blog/passthrough spam, in all honesty. - bsolidgold, on 10/11/2007, -15/+2Dambit, I spelt 'damnit' wrong again!
- jbzd, on 10/11/2007, -13/+2I got a much bigger mini fridge (think dorm size) for only getting 1 million clicks on Google AdWords (only cost me ~$300K). What a steal this is! No USB, but it can plugged into a cigarette lighter car port.
- SteelChicken, on 10/11/2007, -7/+42overloading a PC's USB port for the win.
- subxero37, on 10/11/2007, -11/+6USB ports deliver +5vdc at 500mA max, IIRC, so... 5 * .5 = 2.5 watts. 2.5 watts is sufficient to do a lot of stuff.

- detlev409, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6Took me forever to figure out what a dambit was.
- mythandros, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2I'm going to guess that the hot exhaust air is blown out the back of this mini-fridge...which would mean that hot air was blowing directly at the case behind it.
- Otto, on 10/11/2007, -8/+5$33 for a USB powered one-can fridge? Yuck. USB = 5V = not enough power to do very much.
Go to any office supply store. You'll find a little fridge that will hold a six pack and will plug into a wall or cigarette lighter adapter, and it'll work about 15x better than this thing.
And if you still want to plug it into a PC, get one of these. It'll pull 12v off your PSU and work much better than USB connections will: http://www.frozencpu.com/cig-01.html- OrangeTide, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5It's not the voltage it's the amps (or volts times amps for you watt lovers). of course USB doesn't have much of either. I'm not sure what's wrong with a small wall transformer, especially those nice ones that don't cover up an extra socket.
- Otto, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Right, the USB spec only goes up to 500 milliamps, however many boards can do up to 1 amp on the USB cable, if necessary.
Firewire, BTW, is spec'd at 12V, 1 amp. And it's an always there sort of power connection, unlike USB which has to do actual communication with the PC to request the higher power output (for backwards compatibility reasons). - Astaro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5@Otto
A firewire devce can ask for any however much volatge it wants from the host device, up to 40 volts, but most host devicees only go up to 12.
- mikesty, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2Yuck! Coke Zero!
This is a bit more practical than the guy who made a device that cooks meat using, oh, at least twenty USB plugs.- scabbers, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2Coke causes cancer.
- subxero37, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2It was thirty.

- dieandere, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1Cute, but the one at ThinkGeek (albeit not a USB fridge) is better.... http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/gear/6ad2/
- thcobbs, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2Keeping Dorks cool....
Hrrrmmm... didn't know whales could fit on a desk.
http://fusionanomaly.net/whales.html - trollick, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2I understand one can stick all kinds of things, including ones dick, into USB hole, but why not use regular ac outlet?
- aforsberg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+44"Plug and play"
why would windows notice an accessory with only power contacts? there's no signal being sent!
New Hardware found! Cheapass fridge!
Searching for drivers......- informality, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4they should include software for fridge temperature control... then the USB connection would be good for something other than novelty
- Otto, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2Because USB starts out giving only a pitiful amount of current (100 mA, I think). The peripheral device actually has to establish communication and request a higher power output (up to 500 mA) for the host device to actually put out that much power. This is for backward compatibility with USB 1.1 and such, which did not have that sort of power output.
- DuhStupid, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3Another lame endgadet article.....
I'm not suprised. BURIED BITCHES - Aliarse, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3How about just not being a lazy barsteward and go to the normal fridge in your kitchen?
- gebx, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2It's perfect for offices.. can't leave pop in kitchen fridge cause all co-workers steal!!
- jennamalia, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9does the light go out when the fridge door is closed?
- jacekpoplawski, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8What's the point in plugging something to your USB port when you can't plug something similiar to your standard power socket...?
- brianez21, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Duh, to drain your laptop batteries!
- ruddy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7im actually waiting for the firewire fridge. it gets your beer cooler quicker

- scabbers, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1How about Digg bans engadget and all its sockpuppets?
- steffinb, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7OK, this is lame.
Waste of $33 and a working USB port. - CarzorStelatis, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Please tell me there's a UK distributor...
- spiderdude3, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Another in a long line of useless products that you can hook into your USB port.
- zeppo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2truly stupid when you get a personal fridge for around $80
- airship, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Appliances that plug into the wall are prohibited at my work (no personal fridge for me), and if you put a can of soda in the community fridge it disappears. A cold one from the machine costs a buck, and they have an extremely limited selection. I'd love to be able to bring in a six-pack of my favorite pop and cool one can at a time. I only drink one can at a time, anyway. I could pay for this in three months.
- haggie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5its called prison. you should have thought of the work conditions before you touched that little boy.
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Ice works too.
- monospaced, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Don't be a bitch. Beat the bastard's ass when he takes your soda from the community fridge again.
- Nerfdude, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2wait, you only make 11 dollars per month?
- mustacheo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0No sweat prisoner. Its mighty surprising they allow you a USB port over ther
- andrewpmk, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Why does everybody on Digg like useless USB gadgets? USB doesn't provide enough power for most things - who wants a fridge that stores 1 can of beer? Buried as lame.
- BleedingCello, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I happen to want to keep my next beer cool. Not just one beer, just my next beer......
You buried for being so shortsighted. Look at the big picture.
- BleedingCello, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I happen to want to keep my next beer cool. Not just one beer, just my next beer......
- IllBeBack, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2I'm Gumby, Dambit!
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Uh...why? For the price of two of those, you can get a semiconductor fridge that will hold a couple six packs and lunch. I've got one under my desk.
- rebelyell2k5, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1this.
is.
BEAST. - Smurfoncrack, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1my friends and I are working on overclocking a processor and putting it in a fridge to cool off.
I really don't know if it will work.- Radionesiac, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2It will. Invariably. Find the most expensive CPU you can and go to town.
- airencracken, on 10/11/2007, -1/+147 degrees? I likes my soda at 33-35 degrees.
- daneeeh, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Got 1337 diggs, who gives me the cookie ? =)
