- capheine, on 11/10/2009, -4/+37Of all the weapons in the vast Soviet arsenal, nothing was more profitable than Avtomat Kalashnikova model of 1947. More commonly known as the AK-47, or Kalashnikov. It's the world's most popular assault rifle. A weapon all fighters love. An elegantly simple 9 pound amalgamation of forged steel and plywood. It doesn't break, jam, or overheat. It'll shoot whether it's covered in mud or filled with sand. It's so easy, even a child can use it; and they do. The Soviets put the gun on a coin. Mozambique put it on their flag. Since the end of the Cold War, the Kalashnikov has become the Russian people's greatest export. After that comes vodka, caviar, and suicidal novelists. One thing is for sure, no one was lining up to buy their cars.
- awgg919, on 11/10/2009, -1/+27AK-47?
- scruffybr, on 11/10/2009, -1/+18Remington Model 870 Pump-Action Shotgun, I love this gun
- fattestfoot, on 11/10/2009, -1/+169mm punch? Uh, ok...
- Aeroboy, on 11/10/2009, -4/+19If you'll note, the title of the article is "Top 5 Most Popular Guns -- and Why". Not "Top 5 Guns -- and Why". Please pay more attention in the future.
- inactive, on 11/10/2009, -1/+16I'm not agreeing with the idea that it's the best assault rifle ever, but it's certainly a favorite. It's the only firearm on a national flag, it's a ***** icon.
- McPiggy, on 11/10/2009, -1/+16This should be called the most popular guns IN AMERICA. The AK-47 (and its spinoffs) is the world's most popular firearm.
- inactive, on 11/10/2009, -6/+20Oh, in America. That explains the lack of the world's favorite assault rifle.
- anklebiter, on 11/10/2009, -1/+14Dugg for using the correct definition of "assault rifle".
- useraccess, on 11/10/2009, -1/+14More reliable than an M-16.
- BookaShade, on 11/10/2009, -1/+13And you think canada is competing?
hahaha! - borez, on 11/10/2009, -0/+11Shoot them.
- freshgrease, on 11/10/2009, -0/+11Kind of a crappy article/comparison. I own an 870 express, a Winchester Model 94 lever action, a crappy WASR AK47, and a Taurus PT1911. My only regret is moving away from a good gun range. Mine are not exactly the elite of their type, but even the budget minded guns are fun to shoot and reliable.
I get tired of people who assume that everyone who owns a gun is a potential criminal, and those who judge a man's intentions based on the firearm he posesses. The whole AR-15 = specific design killing machine argument is *****. AR-15s are civilian sporting arms, not M16/M4s used for automatic-fire war fare. Before the semi automatic "assault rifle", there were the lever action Winchester/Marlins that could hold 6+ 30-30 or several more "pistol" rounds. These firearms were seen as "assault rifles" back in the early 1900's, but now we see them strictly as hunting/sporting rifles.
The use of "assualt rifle" is nothing more than political ***** used by people who dream blindly, criminals, and careerist pigs using the blind dreamer's hope to win them political power. Have some ***** common sense. - boogerthecat, on 11/10/2009, -11/+21The AK-47 is the worlds MOST NUMEROUS assault rifle for the simple reason that the Soviets and the Chinese made a billion of them and would sell or give them away to every amoral ***** on the planet.
There are dozens of much better rifles. The only reason you would give a soldier an AK was because he is a substandard soldier and he and the rifle are expendable. - Genady, on 11/10/2009, -0/+10John Moses Browning, you are a genius without peer.
- BabyWookie, on 11/10/2009, -0/+9You should put your quotations in quotes.
- buddymander, on 11/10/2009, -0/+8Unless a gun has selective fire it is not a assault rifle
- ThanatosST, on 11/11/2009, -0/+8Very very few people -need- a gun on a daily basis. However, there are a vast number of people who need a gun once or twice a year. Those people don't know ahead of time when they'll need it, they won't be able to go get one once they do, so the only logical idea is to have one on you at all times just in case. That way the once or twice that you do need it, you have it and don't end up raped/murdered in an alleyway because you couldn't defend yourself.
Also, thank god the bill of rights isn't based on what one person needs in the mind of another, otherwise we'd all be *****. - perryjon1, on 11/10/2009, -1/+9Nice Nick Cage quote.
- Chamrox, on 11/10/2009, -0/+7If there was a #6, it should be the Remington 700 bolt action rifle. (pick your caliber)
- MtheoryX, on 11/10/2009, -1/+8Because criminals don't have the courtesy to wait until after-business hours to mug you?
- charlietuna, on 11/10/2009, -0/+7Ruger 10/22 is crazy popular
Mini-14
AR-10 (like the M-16, but in 7.62 mm)
Russian Saiga / or better yet the AK-74 - qvantamon, on 11/10/2009, -1/+8Alright you Primitive Screwheads, listen up! You see this? This... is my boomstick! The twelve-gauge double-barreled Remington. S-Mart's top of the line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Retails for about a hundred and nine, ninety five. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. You got that?

Granted, the AK in the above video was still working while the wood grips were burning. - inactive, on 11/10/2009, -0/+6Not enough people know of that Quentin Tarantino movie.
- gl77, on 11/10/2009, -0/+6Mossberg 500 pump action 12 gauge.

- aron1185, on 11/10/2009, -0/+6Thank you, Nicolas Cage.
Lord of War aside, AK's, and most other firearms all overheat at some point. All depends on the rate of fire. - chiefbandit2200, on 11/10/2009, -1/+7Nice Lord of War quote.
- BookaShade, on 11/10/2009, -0/+6FN isn't that great...
Kind of hard to control. Powerful though. - drunkCatholic, on 11/10/2009, -0/+5I'm surprised that the Mosin Nagant 91/30 didn't make the list. You can buy one of those with the spare change you find in your couch cushions.
- BookaShade, on 11/10/2009, -0/+5I know right. he had like minus 3 diggs when I read his comment. what the *****.
- jsuther, on 11/10/2009, -0/+5No, 7.62x51 and up is what most agree would qualify as a battle rifle. It just a label though.
- Lonandubh, on 11/10/2009, -3/+8@mrhahn530: Actually? The AK is pretty accurate when fired semi-automatically.
- drunkCatholic, on 11/10/2009, -0/+5you and me both. out of my entire collection, this would be the last gun I would get rid of.
- D3L3T3D, on 11/11/2009, -0/+5You should use ear protection when shooting ANY gun (yes, even the 'wimpy' .22). The supersonic crack of the bullet breaking the sound barrier is enough to cause temporary hearing damage, which could easily turn into permanent hearing damage over time. Then there's the actual percussion of the powder charge. A .44 magnum round is up around 140-160dB, guns are loud and earplugs are cheap.
- BabyWookie, on 11/10/2009, -2/+7A current military production AK such as the Russian AK-103 is still a great weapon. It's light, more accurate than the vast majority of soldiers (2-3 MOA), has plenty of penetration and stopping power and is rugged and reliable as hell. It can also be outfitted with all kinds of state-of-the-art optics, rails and accessory if needed. I would go as far saying that if I had to go into battle right now, I would pick it over anything other weapon in its class out there.
Also, most AK's out there are not Soviet or Chinese exports, but are locally manufactured, licensed and unlicensed copies. The AK and its action design have also been copied in numerous other rifles, such as the Israeli Galil, South African R4 and Finnish Valment. State-of-the-art weapons such as the G36 and Sig 556 also feature major elements of its originally design.
"There are dozens of much better rifles. The only reason you would give a soldier an AK was because he is a substandard soldier and he and the rifle are expendable."
This must be why American GI's were more than happy to pick up the AKs which they found on the battlefield in Nam and why when the CIA offered to supply the Mujahadin with M16A2's in the 1980's, they said: "Uh... that's awfully nice of you, but can you get us some AKs instead?" God, you are ***** ignorant! - DocSquidly, on 11/10/2009, -0/+5@scruffybr - The 870 is a great gun BUT... A shotgun, in general, is far from the idea anti-zombie weapon.
- The ammo is bulky and heavy, limiting the number of round that you can carry
- Range is limited and contrary to popular belief, you still have to aim at close to mid-ranges.
- Unable to attach a suppressor and will attract more of the mobile deceased
On the plus side, having a shot gun may provide you with a psychological boost so at least you'll feel confident before you're devoured. - BabyWookie, on 11/10/2009, -0/+5@jsuther:
I guess a lot of people get confused about the caliber thing, with the 7.62x39 mm Soviet and 7.62x51 mm NATO both being 7.62 mm caliber . - Playr159, on 11/10/2009, -2/+7@Aeroboy wouldn't the worlds most numerous assault rifle be considered the most popular? stfu.
- charlietuna, on 11/10/2009, -0/+5Oh crap, how could I miss the 30 caliber M-1 (later the M-14) !
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1_Garand - Jektal, on 11/10/2009, -0/+4I'd think a 12-gauge shotgun and a 9mm pistol, just for the abundance of ammo.
Personally, I went for an M1911 for my Zombie bag, though. Bigger bullets are good when your aim blows (in the zombie apocalypse I'll be the guy accidentally shooting them all in the neck) - qwerter, on 11/10/2009, -0/+4seriously. less than one page per item? buried.
- hascat, on 11/10/2009, -1/+5"better" is relative. the AK is a great gun because it's easy to manufacture, maintain, and operate.
- Ishiguro, on 11/10/2009, -0/+4which one are you referring to? 7.62x39, 7.62x54R, 7.62x51, or 7.62x25
- Wakkyweed, on 11/10/2009, -0/+4Okay, here's a question for you. If a world-wide disaster was going to happen, like an asteroid strike or nuclear war, what would be the two best guns to bring with you in order to survive in the world after? For the sake of easy portability one would be a long gun and the other a hand gun. Keep in mind such factors as hunting, personal defense, easy ammunition availability, and reliability.
