- KIERANMULLEN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1skype was in there a few times wasnt it? Skypes prices are pretty good, but the quality is so so
However skypes network is closed, and their application gives the user no control over how much bandwidth/cpu is taken from your machine to route calls to other users. I dont mind sharing, but I should be able to control how much I want to share. - BESTenemy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 I've been using http://www.belkin.com/skype/howitworks/ for a few months (Wi-Fi skype only phone). The first gen wi-fiphones look and feel like original iPods, if they were released on the same day as today's models (compared to conventional cell phones). There's a saying that coders should never be allowed to make their own GUI's. To that I'd add that computer manufacturers shouldn't be allowed to make cell phones either. Most of the ones available today are ugly, heavy, non-intuitive for people that aren't deeply familiar with the service.
I was a heavy Skype user before, so the handset became a good investment.
If your town is full of coffee houses, like mine, you can ditch the regular phone service all together and use Wi-Fi to talk, but if you are concerned about the comfort level of a device, I suggest waiting a few years. Wi-Fi phones are too young and still need further development, before they can compete with cellular alternatives. - Peepsalot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anyone found a wireless Voip handset that has drivers for linux?
I tried to set up a Linksys CIT200 Skype phone on my linux box a while ago, but had no luck. - Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The amount of skype stuff is shocking. We're going from one closed system to another.
- mudgod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are there any non skype cell phone look alike phones available? I was looking into getting one that also could send IM's via pseudo text message (use the same interface). The skype offerings I saw didn't offer this (Belkin/Linksys)
- ambanmba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They missed out on mentioning Asterisk which you can combine with a diskless setup like a Linksys NSLU2. It's a full-featured PABX for your home.
See http://www.ambor.com/public/home_pabx/home_pabx.html - neuroticus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did anyone notice a handheld which can be used as a VoIP, regular wired, AND cell phone? Combine that with a foldable e-paper display for PDA, and that is my dream phone.
