WOOT !
- PYREX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+01 word
- amjustice, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Comeon, lets get this to the front page, the people want to know!
- zulusafari, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I just talked with a rep at Tivo and she said it will be out late Sept. No info on pricing yet.
- uidzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can order it right off the site. Click the buy now option and it tells you the rpice and lets you order it.
TIVO has moved to a cell phone price model. Instead of doing it the way they used to, where you'd pay $200-400 for a new box then pay monthly. You pay $50-$150 for a new box and then sign a 1-3 yr contract (price per month gets cheaper the longer contract you sign) - uidzero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1scratch that.
- uidzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can order it right off the site. Click the buy now option and it tells you the rpice and lets you order it.
- zulusafari, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6She also confirmed that, from her documentation, it will not work with Satellite service!!!!!!!!
- mraty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Not surprising. Directv already dropped tivo in favor of the NDS (also owned by Murdoch) DVRs.
But that's probably not entirely accurate. It won't be built-in to a satellite receiver for sure. But, if you have a regular satellite receiver the tive should be able to plug into it the same way that it works with standalone cable boxes (receivers). - SoBayJake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5From what we've seen before, there will be NO capability to control satellite boxes (no serial control, no IR blasters). It will record NTSC, ATSC, and digital cable (with Cable Card).
Granted, this could change, so who really knows? - mraty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3No IR or serial?
That's practically useless for anything other than a cable card... - SoBayJake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It has an ATSC tuner, as well, so if you are in an area with OTA HD, you will be in luck.
The S3 can record from any 2 of its 6 built-in tuners. The idea of re-encoding HD output from a satellite box just won't work....at least, without being quite expensive.
- mraty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Not surprising. Directv already dropped tivo in favor of the NDS (also owned by Murdoch) DVRs.
- Bierboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Someone else somewhere (don't remember where) said they talked to TiVo CR and was told October, so I wouldn't believe anything they say at this point.
- lithuin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"Someone else somewhere (don't remember where)"
That's my favorite source, especially in terms of reliability.
No offense Bierboy. I had to.
- lithuin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"Someone else somewhere (don't remember where)"
- amjustice, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3It has been known for awhile that the Series 3 will not work with satellite and only with cable. Don't blame this one on Tivo though blame it on the satellite companies not wanting to play nice with Tivo. Oh well who needs Satellite anyways!
- Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I need satellite, I hated Time warner's service.. and im paying a whole lot less for satellite service than I did for Time warner.
Direct TV's DVR is fine, and they've had HDDVR for quite some time now. - xshaisu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Oh well who needs Satellite anyways!"
I do, because TW is the worst cable company ever. - TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@Jwoey
Yeah and the DirecTV DVR *IS* a Tivo. They're currently based on Tivo 6.1 with the HMO features ripped out. They have their own DVR coming out at some point "in the future." I just ordered the HDR10-250 which was *supposed* to be installed today. The installation guy needs a kick in the face for not showing up. - mraty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@Jwoey
"Direct TV's DVR is fine"
Yes, but it doesn't run linux and is not hackable.
"and they've had HDDVR for quite some time now"
The only HD DVR they have is the HD Tivo (HR10-250). Although they're reportedly working on an in-house (NDS) HD DVR. - mraty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@TheBarge
Their HD DVR is a Tivo. Their SD DVRs are not Tivo's anymore.
They quit making the Directivos a while back, and as far as I know, you can't buy them anywhere other than ebay (I was looking recently). - Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ahh, I didn't realize that their HD DVRs were TiVo. I only have an SD DVR and know that they used to be TiVo, but aren't anymore. In any case, the HD DVR option has been there with Direct TV for awhile.
- chrisirmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The DirecTV/TiVo HD DVRs (HR10-250) do not support MPEG4, which is where everything is eventually heading. All of the new HD local channels are in MPEG4, so you can't DVR those stations off the satellite until DirecTV releases their own MPEG4 DVR nationally (limited release in LA right now). The TiVo HD DVR for satellite is a dead or at least dying relic.
The Series3 has never been expected to work with satellite, and that's the only reason I'm sticking with TW right now. - TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Jwoey
Ahh well it appears we're both in the wrong :) I bought my DTV SD receiver about 6 months or so ago and it was a Tivo based unit. I'll have to see how the DTV-based DVR compares to the Tivo one. I've had Tivos since 1999 and I love 'em. Can't imagine switching to anything else. The current TimeWarner cables boxes suuuucck.
@chrisirmo
AHa! That would be why they said I couldn't get the locals with the Tivo unit. I can get an OTA antenna and record via that in HD though. - dethl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@mraty
"Although they're reportedly working on an in-house (NDS) HD DVR."
They do, its called the HR20 and is a DirecTV branded MPEG-4 HD-DVR and is currently availiable in limited numbers (only in LA right now).
- Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I need satellite, I hated Time warner's service.. and im paying a whole lot less for satellite service than I did for Time warner.
- dannywsu, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Dead link?
- dannywsu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Nope.. just slow. Works now!
- fb1273, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Satellite is the only service to offer the NFL Sunday Ticket!!!! I say that the only reason you need satellite!!!!!!!!
- radioactivesmrf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Our local cable company is a total ripoff that I would never use. The only give out pricing on 3 months of service but after that won't say what it is. Anyone else see something wrong with that? Direct TV is up front, honest, and much more affordable than cable is in my area.
- SoBayJake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What cable company? Is the a local office you can go in to? Or do you mean they won't tell you online what the prices are?
I would think the city would force them to show what their "real" rates are. If not, ask what the franchising authority is, and give them a call. - Jadinlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yup, this is a marketing tactic that is really being abused but no one is doing anything about it. Just look at internet service advertisements. Everything is advertised based on the introductory rate. Not even the fine print reveals what the true monthly cost is. Why isn't something being done about this deceptive style of promotion. It really annoys me.
- SoBayJake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What cable company? Is the a local office you can go in to? Or do you mean they won't tell you online what the prices are?
- chowyunskinny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Is it going to have component inputs or HDMI inputs? If so, I can't see why you couldn't hook up one of those inputs to either of those outputs on the satellite receiver.
- mingistech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3it will have neither.
cable in..... HDMI and Component out.
(i've seen pics of the back) :)
- mingistech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3it will have neither.
- MarkZahn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My biggest question would be, can you dual-tune from a Cable Card and an ATSC antenna? Our local FOX affiliate is holding their HD signal for ransom from Time Warner Green Bay.
- chrisirmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The talk back during CES was that it would have six tuners (2 CableCard, 2 ATSC, 2 NTSC), and you could tune any two of those simultaneously.
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Too bad it ain't multi-room....
I'll stick with my Verizon Fios TV Multi-Room DVR with HDTV.- StarDal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow, where did you get "too bad it won't be multi-room" from? Stand Alone TiVo's are currently MR and I haven't seen anything yet to suggest that they would remove that functionality in later models. Verizon wasn't the inventor of DVR MultiRoom. Then again, neither was TiVo, I don't think.
Please provide refs to back up that statement. That will sure help the rest of us in deciding to buy one. - gtrider, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0ooh where are you that you have FiOS! I been drooling over that for quite awhile..
They offer it south of me and apparently north of me. - aristobrat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1With the exception of the DirecTV labotomized units, what TiVo made in the last 2 years hasn't had Multi-Room viewing and the ability to copy shows from TiVo to PC? Can your FiOS DVR do that yet?

- evansls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Prediction: The new series 3 HD tivo will NOT cost $100 or $200. It will probably cost $300 to $400 and will carry its new 1, 2 and 3 year plans that will cost between 16.95 to 19.95 a month to feed. It will probably be 250GB in size. Sure these are probably obvious guesses, but I thought I would share them.
If the series 3 HD tivo could cost $150 to $200 to purchase then it would be a steal!- flippedcracker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1early rumors put it at $800. :eek3:
- GoodShipBebop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been a huge Tivo fan from the very beginning but the way they've handled the Series 3 and HD in general has been awful. They've given the cable companies an entire year to get caught up and have left the general tivo hardware stagnant. They've also let their CS quality levels slip (I had to have two boxes traded in because of it) and they've been releasing flakey software updates that cause severe performance issues. Don't believe me? Check Tivo's help forums - the most recent "KidZone" update has Tivos all over the country lagging out, crawling to a halt and just generally sucking. The general Tivo hardware hasn't been significantly changed since the series 2 was introduced and now many cable companies offer boxes with better built in features (dual or tri-tuners, full HDTV support out of the box without extra charges for Cablecards, 200 - 300 hour standard capacity, 40-80hour HD capacity.) I like all the extra features my Tivo gives me and love Tivo desktop but I really don't know if I can justify purchasing a series 3.
- Jadinlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So THAT is why my Tivo is laggy!!!! I honestly had no idea.
- drewmangroup, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Will it decode QAM. I get my locals over QAM and love paying the basic cable fee. TO go to CableCard its way to much because I have to upgrade to digital then to HD and the CC costs as much as the box does for some reason. If I could record my locals with QAM and not have to have an anteanna, that would be great.
- bluebunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The word is that it will, but will Tivo have guide data for the QAM channels is the question.
- esoteric0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yeah, i'll be sure to get one of these. $16.95 or whatever it is monthly fee with no option to buy a lifetime sub? forget that crap. i'll stick to my myth box. it controls my satellite just fine.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is pretty pricey. I do prefer the option of lifetime subscriptions but understand TiVo needs to make some revenue. Sigh.
- chowyunskinny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Found this for those that are interested in pics:
http://www.hdbeat.com/2006/08/22/series-3-tivo-in-the-wild/ - imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well... your title there is a little mis-leading. There's absolutely no "Tivo Series 3 Information.." at that site. Just a link to sign up for a mailing list. :(
Tivo ROCKS btw. :) - phenolholic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2tivo, the mythbox setup with a monthly fee. why not just install a dedicated mythbox setup with a cool looking HTPC case, and stop making corperate america richer, especially if their OS is a free one (yes, tivo's OS is linux)
- thechise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2For such a revolutionary product, Tivo has the worst business sense I have ever seen. As crappy as they may be, Cable company DVR's have been doing multiple programs and HD for years now.
And now they are on the cusp of releasing the Series 3. Why is it not coming out in August or early September at the latest. Helloooo new Fall television series you morons. Get the product out before, not during or after Lost, new CSI's, etc.
I will definitely buy one because they have me by the balls because of their interface. But I almost want them to go under as a company because they have made so many stupid decisions.- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What stupid decisions would those be?
- TheKillDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dropping their one fee lifetime subscription model and changing it to a monthly subscription. I've passed on a new box and know numerous people who have done the same thing. Why bother buying a Tivo when you can just rent it from your satt or cable provider for the same price and if it breaks you get a new one (free), and if it becomes outdated you get a new one (free).
- imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd like to see the ability to upgrade or move your service to a new device! I have 3 1st gen Sony Tivo boxes with Lifetime, and there's no way I'm gonna pay the monthly service fee for a new box.
- TheKillDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I couldn't agree more. I have a first generation Tivo box with a lifetime script and want to upgrade but refuse to because of their policy change. I can't see paying them a monthly charge ever! People ask me how I like my Tivo and I love it but I tell them just to go with their cable provider for a DVR.
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well looks interesting but only 250 gig's that's not enough space for HD.
unless your only interested in saving about 30 hours or less of programing.
I have 400 gigs just for standard NTSC.- PYREX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i give it a week before it's hacked and people have 750GB stuffed in there.
- krytenx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The unit they showed at CES had an external SATA port so you could add more storage.
- Sartori, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Shame Tivo decided not to sell their product in my country any more. Ah well, guess I'll roll my own (or do without!) :(
- absmith1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For the love of all that is holy, I sincerly hope that TiVo can pull this one off. I was captive to DirecTV and it's evicerated version of the TiVo service for too long. When I moved, I took the plunge to switch to cable (Comcast) and deal with SD until the Series 3 comes out.
At home I have 3 idle DirecTiVos (including an HD one) in addition to the two new active stand-alone boxes reminding me every day how much of an optimtimistic TiVo "fanboy" (thought I'd beat somebody to calling me one) I am. - neonlovechicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love my current Tivo... and the specs of the Series 3 look awesome. BUT I'd never buy it (because they no longer offer lifetime subscriptions)... there is no way I'm paying $15-20 a month (for the tivo service) in addition to a cable subscription.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's not really info. It's just a page that says "enter your email to get info when it becomes available."
- Frozo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree that losing the lifetime subscription blows, but Im ready to upgrade and its been about 3 years since I bought my old TiVo anyway. I dont know about you guys, but Im not one to use the same unit for a lifetime. The way I figure, it costs me about the same if I upgrade every few years (lifetime subscription or 3 year plan).
- vguard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who needs Tivo? It's full of homogenized corporate crap....Soma for the sheeple
Nice Country, freetards!- Frozo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And scouring the internet on subjects that have no interest to you, only to post unproductive and negative comments is so laudable. I wish you the best in finding fulfillment.
